I am deeply interested in this. I'm going to assume that this will take a place in a time line where the point of divergence is before the game itself, or that the game starts later than normal. What holdings will the young(ish) Prince possess? I'm going to assume that it's Bonaparte the second, not the third - and that he won't die so young. Did the Louisiana purchase go off as planned? I see no reason that Napolean I would hold onto it if he could use it to cripple the British... But if he's already done that, than there's no need. Gah! So many questions! But as long as Napolean IV is a contender, this is set to be a very enthralling story indeed.

Most events will go historical, including Waterloo. Napoleon IV would be very differnt in this affair compared to Napoleon IV of our timeline.

The Son of the Emperor
Prince Imperial
An Alternative History Affair

Prologue: I

His Majesty, Napoléon I of the French Empire.

Throughout the centuries of humanity, the birth of children grants great improbability of passing on one’s legacy. An existence of endless, immeasurable possibilities and magnificent expectations arise. What kind of person will this new life grow up to become? A child typically has high expectations from his parents, grandparents and other relatives, but what if the birth of the child is heralded throughout the nation? The weight of the world and the fate of the nation would rest in the hands of a young babe.

On March 20th, 1811 a tremendous event would occur; with the birth of a legitimate male heir for Emperor Napoléon I. The birth of the young babe caused tremendous celebration throughout the French Empire. A roaring salute of numerous cannons positioned throughout the capital of Paris thundered in the birth of Napoléon François Joseph Charles Bonaparte.

A painting of the Prince Imperial, sleeping in a darkened forest with the sunlight breaking through. This is a picture that clearly describes the uncertainty of the possible reign of the young babe.

Following the tradition of the heirs of the Emperor’s of the Holy Roman Empire; which Napoléon had dismantled,, his declared his sin “His Majesty the King of Rome”. Along with the courtesy title, the babe was bestowed with the title of Prince Imperial. The christening of the young babe, now king of Rome, was a tremendous state ceremony at the Cathedral of Notre Dame.

Though the titles of the King of Rome and Prince Imperial were not all the young majesty had to look forward to. His young mother, the nineteen year old Empress Marie-Louise, former Archduchess of Austria and daughter of Emperor Franz I of Austria brought upon the possibilities of a future within one of Europe’s oldest monarchies. The marriage of Napoléon and Marie-Louise was to strengthen the relationship between two of Europe’s greatest nations, and provided immense legitimatization and validation to Napoléon. Former Empress Joséphine may have been beautiful, and Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna of the House of Romanov may have been a dream, but Empress Marie-Louise and the Prince Imperial were a reality.

A painting of Empress Marie-Louise and the Prince Imperial, His Majesty the King of Rome and his crown.

The Son of the Emperor
Prince Imperial
An Alternative History Affair

Prologue: II

The Prince Imperial, His Majesty the King of Rome, around the age of one.

The Prince Imperial’s first years in Paris were that of spectacular magnificence and importance. His father was beginning to prepare for the invasion of Russia in 1812; which would to prove to be the beginning of the end for the Empire born through revolution. The imperial trappings at the household of his parents was splendorous, and is noted as “the Prince Imperial’s favorite toys are flags, trumpets, drums, a great horse that is often in repair due to heavy usage, wooden blocks with military unit markings and wood carved soldiers.”

His mother adored the child, while his father loved and taught his child about the affairs of the Empire. Servants and advisors would often catch the Emperor studying important matters of state with the Prince Imperial in the room, by his father’s side, or sleeping on the furniture against his father’s legs. When receiving dignitaries it was often noted that the guests would have to bow before both Emperor Napoléon I and the Prince Imperial.

A painting of the Emperor and the Prince Imperial in the Imperial Household's study.

At the age of two and a half, with his sweet lips hardly capable of repeating words that were being said to him, the education began. His tutors drilled in the language of the nation, French with great vigor. It is rumored that by the age of three, possibly four, his vocabulary matched that of a nine year old rather than a toddler. It had been determined by Napoléon I that the Prince Imperial would be prepared for his great place in history that awaited him.

However; the realities of the world would begin to seep into the dreams and hopes and quickly turn them into a frantic dash for safety. The Allied Armies had defeated his father’s last attempt to save France outside of Paris on March 29th, 1814, shortly after the Prince Imperial’s third birthday. His father now faced a simple yet disdainful choice. The throne of France could remain in the hands of a Bonaparte, as long as it was content with the borders of pre-revolutionary France.

A painting of the Emperor and the Prince Imperial in the Imperial Household's library shortly before the defeat of Napoléon's army outside of Paris on March 29th, 1814.

Thanks for the comments so far.

Quick poll question:

Shall the throne of France remain in a Bonaparte now or shall a Bourbon return?

A Bonaparte remaining on the throne seems unlikely. I say let the Bourbons take the crown - the Prince Imperial can restore the throne to the Imperial dynasty when he comes of age.

Nice prologue, is it just me or does the 'Prince' Imperial look more like a "Princess" Imperial in those pics?

I actually had the exact thoughts when first looking at the paintings. But the paintings are just that, paintings and aren't always an accurate description. I'll share more paintings as we progress.

Things change. Hell, pink used to be the default color for boys.

Interesting concept on the AAR, BTW. That last pic with the Prince Imperial on the globe (I assume that's a globe) is adorable. The cutest little imperial warmonger ever. :D

"Papa, I want to conquer this place here."

"R-Russia? I think that's not a good idea, son..."

It is quite a cute picture. I wonder when this was drawn, because if it was 1812, I'm sure your quotations would apply!
