For nine hundred years, the Roman Reich of the Hohenzollerns has endured. Through barbarian invasions, deadly plagues, ambitious generals, corrupt politicians, vile heretics, and godless equalists, the Empire of the Romans and its ideals have survived and thrived.

It is the year of our Lord 1936. The last century had been one of momentous change, both good and bad. The Industrial Revolution swept the world, bringing new technologies and lifestyles with it. The Reich led the way in industrialization, forging a global capitalist economy which brought millions out of poverty and obscurity.

The forces of nationalism shaped the geopolitical landscape, bringing down older empires and bringing new empires to prominence. In 1868, following the Expedition of the Thousand which brought down the Tran Dynasty of Vietnam, the three (formerly four) Chinese dynasties lining the Pacific Ocean officially united under Ming leadership into the Chinese Empire, which with its new industrial strength and manpower came to challenge the Reich's global hegemony.

There was a dark side to the winds of modernity coming with industrialization. New weapons of war, far deadlier than any previous weapons, were invented and put to use. Industrial warfare ravaged the entire world in the Weltkrieg from 1914 to 1918, destroying empires that had lasted for centuries and bringing the Reich to its knees. In the aftermath of the war, dangerous ideologies took root in the defeated and exhausted nations.

The red tide of equalism took root in the remains of the old Tsardom of Russia, which became the Commune of Socialist Soviet Republics, or Soviet Commune, and soon planted roots down in North Eimerica. The Roman-aligned Kingdom of Kanata, the Fox Empire, and the Reich's ancient enemy, the Triple Alliance, all fell victim to the scourge in the chaos of the year 1926.

The other ideology sweeping the world was fascism. Starting in the Mongol Tsardom of Yavdi, which after the war was invaded and conquered by the Soviet Commune, fascism spread out into South Asia and South Eimerica, where dictators such as Inca Roca Yupanqui, Wolde Tzaddick, Reza Khan, Mohandas Gandhi rose to power, promising the masses a return to glory.

20161003193305_1.jpg

These two ideological factions desire nothing more than conquest and expansion, to force their ideals upon the rest of the world, to take the Reich's hegemony for themselves.

The Chinese Empire, which had survived the war largely intact, has restored some semblance of its prewar global influence. Its Tianxia Alliance now promoted an alternative to the Reich's meritocratic status quo, the Soviet Commune's equalism, and the Indian Raj's fascism in the form of liberal parliamentary democracy. With the Reich still reeling from the effects of the Great Depression, the Chinese Empire under the nationalist Chancellor Wang Jingwei is poised to achieve its ambitions to dominate all of Asia and the Pacific.

Not even the Reich was spared the horrors of the post-war era. It had been immobilized by a general strike in 1926 that allowed equalism and fascism to branch out and again in 1929 when its stock markets crashed, causing the worldwide Great Depression. The war claimed the lives of no less than two Kaisers of the Romans, bringing a child to the imperial throne. That child, Kaiser Otto I, is now of age, but he inherits a broken empire. The prosperity his predecessors, Sigismund II, Franz Joseph I, and Karl I, enjoyed is gone. Massive unemployment has put millions of citizens out of work. But that is not the only problem that Otto faces in his reign.

During his regency, an ambitious politician and general named Markos Angelos rose to power, becoming the "Regent for the Regent" while Regents Chancellor Paul von Hindenburg and Field Marshal Erich Ludendorff commanded the imperial legions in the war. He soon started imposing his own will over the empire, passing legislation that ran contrary to the Reich's meritocratic spirit. The Augustinian Code, the Reich's legal code which protected each citizen's rights regardless of gender, race, religion (except for Christian heresies) or social standing, came under attack for the first time in its five-hundred-year existence. While he was quickly forced from power upon Hindenburg's and Ludendorff's return to Berlin in 1921, the Great Depression and Chancellor Hindenburg's death in 1934 returned him to power and expanded his influence significantly. In 1936, Angelos now commands the loyalty of millions of citizens who are convinced that the meritocratic system has failed them.

The Hohenzollern dynasty had risen to power in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, in one generation going from the margraves of a small village to the most powerful family in all of central Europe, in another to the indisputed rulers of all of Europe and western Christendom, and in another to the unchallenged rulers of all of a united Christendom. They survived the thirteenth-century invasions of the Triple Alliance and the Mongol Empire and emerged stronger than ever. Within another two centuries they had established colonies throughout Africa, South Eimerica, and Southeast Asia, and by the 18th century they had ended the barbarian threats at their source. In the 19th century, the two main branches of the Hohenzollern dynasty--the liberal democratic Maximists and the meritocratic Siegfriedist-Nikephorans--went to war with each other, with the latter emerging triumphant and ensuring the survival of the meritocratic system. As the Reich leaves the golden days of the Imperial Century and heads forth into an uncertain future, the Hohenzollerns are faced with their greatest challenge yet. With a new global war on the horizon, they shall decide the fate of the world over the next ten years...or die trying.

Equalism, Fascism, Democracy, or Meritocracy.

Soviet Commune, Indian Raj, Chinese Empire, or Roman Reich.

Who shall emerge victorious from the chaos of Götterdämmerung?

Hello, and welcome to "The Hohenzollern Empire 4," the fourth stage of my Hohenzollern Roman Empire megacampaign, which was begun in CKII and played through EUIV and Victoria II. This will be the final stage of the traditional megacampaign, but I hope to take the story further into the future with Victoria II's New World Order mod and possibly Stellaris, though I do not currently own Stellaris.

In the CKII portion of the story, the (custom) Hohenzollern dynasty, aided by their allies and (somewhat) loyal vassals the Habsburgs and the real Hohenzollerns (designated in this AAR as Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen) conquered, crusaded, and inherited their way to claim the imperial thrones of the Greeks and Germans, but battled for centuries against the barbarian hordes from the east and west for the very survival of Christianity and the new Roman Empire.

In the EUIV segment, the barbarian hordes have been defeated for good, and the Reich progressed into first the Age of Exploration and the Renaissance and then into the Enlightenment. Colonies have been established all across the world, and the barbarians have been defeated and crushed in their own homelands.

In the Victoria II installment, the Reich quickly caught on to the winds of industrialization blowing out of Vietnam and led the world into the industrial revolution, ushering an era of (mostly) peace known as the Imperial Century. Much of Africa and South Eimerica were brought under Berlin's control, expanding the empire to a size no previous empire ever reached. However, this era was not without its problems. The barbarian empires continued to collapse, inviting dangerous ideologies to take root in their lands. The various Chinese dynasties united together under one banner which rapidly became a force to be reckoned with.

The Weltkrieg and its horrendous slaughter ended the Imperial Century for good along with countless other kingdoms and empires. As old ideas faded away, new ones took their places. Fascism and equalism grew in popularity, sweeping away ancient regimes in North Eimerica, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia and replacing them with horrifying totalitarian dictatorships. Even the Hohenzollerns have ran into their own set of problems, obstacles that they must overcome to ensure their empire's continued existence.

Will the equalists depose the Hohenzollern monarchy and bring godless equalist freedom to the oppressed proletariat? Will Gandhi and his Axis minions develop weapons of terrifying power and bring their enemies to their knees? Will China succeed in restoring the Sinocentric world order and bring "balance" to All Under Heaven? Will the People's Alliance of Red Altepetls try to restore the glory of the Acatl monarchy it overthrew and seek vengeance against its enemies in Cusco, Michigan, Tejas, and Berlin? Or will the Hohenzollerns overcome their problems and save the world from the terrors of the far left and right? The next ten years will determine the fate of the world for decades, if not centuries, to come.

I will attempt to limit my own expansion (no declaring war on anybody without an appropriate event or decision), and console commands/save reloading/save editing will be used for balance, better immersion, AI advantages, glitches, crashes, and other emergency situations. In test runs of HOI3 and gameplay for this AAR I have found that crashes are more frequent than in other Paradox games, forcing me to reload from an autosave frequently. I apologize for any inconveniences in narrative this may cause.

I will also attempt to disable all attempts by the AI to manually declare war; they can declare war when the relevant event or decision fires for them. As such, this AAR will likely be highly railroaded for the sake of plot. However, to my knowledge it is impossible to completely prevent the AI from manually declaring war, so there may be some restarts when the AI does so at the wrong time.

I should also point out that this is my first game of HOI3 ever, so some advice would be helpful. I plan to use my inexperience to balance out the insane advantages the Reich starts with.

I hope you'll enjoy the next stage of our journey.

Saints Wilhelmina and Gunhilda, grant us victory in battle.

I feel like Gandhi is looking into my soul in the picture. It's the look of someone ready to rain down nuclear death upon his enemies. :p

I'm intrigued to see what faction the Reich swings towards. Or maybe it'll just fight them all, if that is even possible.

I think he's trying to tell you to run away while you still can, because his words are backed with nuclear weapons.:p

In test runs all three factions attempted to influence the Reich, with a net drift towards sometimes the Allies and sometimes the Tianxia. However, I do not plan to align with any of them. I initially planned to fight all three factions simultaneously just to see how overpowered the Reich is, but I decided on something else which will be revealed in a later update.

Ah, the stage is being built... not quite set for now, but we're getting there. This'll be good. I look froward to the breakdown of what's changed upon conversion.

May Saints Wilhelmina and Gunhilda protect us in battle...

So, after HOI3, did you say you planned on exporting to Victoria 2: NWO, and from there Stellaris? Or did you only plan on exporting to the former?

EDIT: And who will the Reich side with in the war? None of the factions seem to fit their ideology, so how will that go?

I intend to convert to NWO and stop in 2066, but because I don't own Stellaris right now I can only continue until 2092. If I buy Stellaris at some point in the future I will definitely "convert" over. I even have a few plots planned out already!

The Reich will not side with anybody except its own allies. I like to think of the unaligned neutrals as their own faction, although ideologically weaker and more susceptible to defections to other factions. However I want to keep most of the details secret until the war actually breaks out.

Edit: it appears I haven't taken any screenshots of the world yet, so I will have to do that before I begin writing the next update. In addition, the AI keeps changing all of its ministers (including heads of state and government) randomly for some reason, so I might have to dig around to get the correct cabinets. Don't expect any screenshots of non-Reich cabinets once we get past the setup unless I can get the problem fixed.

Well this is interesting.

Time to fire up the purging engines?

Sadly there are no heretics to purge...yet.;)

Hey, as long as there is purging going on, the Mandromenoi don't care who is getting purged.

Heretics, Infidels, Prisoners of War, Political Enemies, Allies who have outlived their usefulness, Random Civilians off the street.

As long as the blood flows, it matters not whose blood it is....

Worry not, there will be plenty of purging once World War II begins...I might even consider purging the Mandromenoi dynatoi for being heretics.:p

View attachment 216873
The other ideology sweeping the world was fascism. Starting in the Mongol Tsardom of Yavdi, which after the war was invaded and conquered by the Soviet Commune, fascism spread out into South Asia and South Eimerica, where dictators such as Inca Roca Yupanqui, Wolde Tzaddick, Reza Khan, Mohandas Gandhi rose to power, promising the masses a return to glory.
View attachment 216874 View attachment 216875
These two ideological factions desire nothing more than conquest and expansion, to force their ideals upon the rest of the world, to take the Reich's hegemony for themselves.
View attachment 216796

The Chinese Empire, which had survived the war largely intact, has restored some semblance of its prewar global influence. Its Tianxia Alliance now promoted an alternative to the Reich's meritocratic status quo, the Soviet Commune's equalism, and the Indian Raj's fascism in the form of liberal parliamentary democracy. With the Reich still reeling from the effects of the Great Depression, the Chinese Empire under the nationalist Chancellor Wang Jingwei is poised to achieve its ambitions to dominate all of Asia and the Pacific.
View attachment 216846 View attachment 216847 View attachment 216849

Marvelous beginning!Well,Götterdämmerung looks quite impressive.
P.S.:Ecumenical Patriarchate is ruling party of Reich?
P.P.S.:Indian Raj is in so position, that it could do with Pakhstana the same as with real Ethiopia did Italy, with Zunbilistan - casual Anschluss, and later - partition of Ghaznavids with Soviets(+Soviets have winter war with China for better borders). And after all this madness Soviets did another stupid thing - and everybody lose their minds in new Weltkrieg.
P.P.P.S.:I understand,that all wasn`t as I described.

It really is too bad you couldn't go to HOI4 as it has a much lower learning curve, and also you could have actually been in a faction, or formed one later, rather than being stuck to only three.

Ooh, I like the idea of the Romans starting out neutral, like the USA. I think the Ghaznavids are going to be Poland, partitioned between India and the Soviets.
The original plan was to have the Reich lead the Axis, but when I came up with the idea for Gandhi-Hitler I decided to make the Reich the Allied leader. And then when I realized that the Allies would instantly win the game due to the Reich fulfilling most of the victory conditions I made the Reich neutral.
Wonder what China will do.....
Let me give you a hint: "Banzai" is the Japanese pronunciation of "Wansui.";)
Certainly excited to see how this goes down.
How the Reich effortlessly crushes every single nation in the world simultaneously, or how many nerfs I gave the Reich to stop that from happening?:p

For some reason the converter made the ruling party the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and I can't find any way to change it. I'll include an in-universe explanation in the next update.

All I can say is that the Indian Raj won't stay put for long.:D But as Finland actually exists and China is so large, I wouldn't count on a Soviet-China Winter War. In addition, since the Soviets and China are both faction leaders, due to game mechanics a war between them can only end in one of them surrendering.

I know. HOI4 looks great so far, but I don't have the money to buy it yet. I did mention that I would try to use HOI3's steep learning curve and my inexperience to nerf the Reich. It would have been nice to have my own faction, though I don't know what to call it besides "Central Powers," which doesn't really fit the nature of the alliance bloc at this point.

Fair enough...perhaps the Old Order?

Sounds too reactionary. I was think something along the lines of "Holy Alliance" or "Imperial Alliance," but those still don't sound appropriate.

From last Victoria2 update upper house,I counted, that if converting could happen to HOI4,fascist party would have 47%,equalist - 4%,reactionary(ruling,as I can guess) - 4%,and democratic faction(that is united front of revolutionary, corporatist, conservative and socialist factions) - about 45% of parliament. As in HOI3 we have not 4 and not 7 but 10 ideologies,I can't guess what actually upper house would be like in this AAR.Are such divided parties like liberal, fascist and communist partitioned here,or 3 from 10 political parties just have 0 seats in parliament, while the other stats are the same as in Vic2?
P.S.:It's interesting to know how are called parties in exile empires.Well, the divergence between locals and foreign exiles might create the weirdest combinations.
