The Meeting at the Reichswehr Headquarters – Part 1

GermanGenerals_sm.jpg

On September 8th 1948 Theodor Heuss along with the finest of Germany’s military strategists and generals met at the Reichswehr Headquarters in Berlin. The deadline Heuss had set for the preparation of the Reichswehr for war was about to pass and the Chancellor now looked to decide whether or not to proceed with war. Over the past year a new Panzer model had replaced the Panzer II (which had been standard issue since the war in Asia ended) called the E-50 Standardpanzer, the entire infantry had been outfitted with the latest rifles and other small arms whilst the entire Luftwaffe was brought up to the level of ‘Improved Turbojet’. Currently in production were a series of super-heavy armored units known as the Panzer VIII Maus, these would accompany new infantry divisions and were designed to act as an immovable barrier to be used in defensive situations. But with the Blitzkrieg Doctrine close to their hearts for the earlier stages of any potential war these new units would not be necessary.

Erich von Manstein, Chief of Staff in the Reichswehr and head of the Combined Berlin Pact Military Wing, followed on from Albert Speer’s presentation on the recent improvements of the Reichswehr (and future expansions) by offering a view of the overall military power of the Berlin Pact.

untitled394.jpg

On land Germany and the Pact as a whole was at its strongest, the Heer employed around 2.5 million men including the world’s second largest (but most powerful) armored force not to mention the large mobile contingent of mechanized and motorized corps and the elite Fallschirmjäger and Gebirgsjäger divisions. The Chinese basic infantry was actually of the same standard, in terms of equipment, as Germany but lacked the training and experience of their veteran counterparts. On the South American Continent Argentina seemed to have more than enough to defend itself from invasion but the strategically vital Venezuela (whose economic miracle had seen industrial output almost double since joining the Pact) was under a severe threat of invasion and may require Germany to send reinforcements across the Atlantic. Most nations in Europe retained a modest army and half of the armed forces of every Balkan country was deployed to the German-Soviet border to bolster the German garrison forces already there, the exception to this was Bulgaria whose greater independence form the Berlin pact meant that they kept their army within Bulgaria itself. In Western Europe both France and Italy fielded strong land armies but the Pact saw little purpose for them beyond the protection of Europe from invasion, these nation’s real military uses lay elsewhere.

kuomintang-5.jpg

The leadership of Chiang Kaishek’s army is a major issue with many ex-warlords employed by the Kuomintang and no real military academy established within China. In the past year Alexander von Falkenhausen has been sent back to China after tens years back in Europe. The difficulties of working with Chiang, and the importance of the 3 million Chinese soldiers to the Berlin Pact, mean that the Chinese army is currently not under Pact control and will act at its own whim, it can only be hoped that this powerful force will be used effectively.

untitled395.jpg

Between 1940 and 1946 the Luftwaffe had grown very little due to the focus on expanding the land and latter naval forces of the Reich, at its lowest ebb near the start of 1946 the RAF fielded an air force twice the size of the Luftwaffe. Since then the German air force has gone through astronomical growth in both the quality and quantity of its units and is now arguably the most powerful air force on earth. The next most powerful Pact air force is that of France, although smaller than the Chinese and Argentine fleets it is considerably more modern and is currently half-way through the process of upgrading to ‘Improved Turbojet’ standard. Both the Chinese and Argentines have large Turbojet air fleet which will greatly strain any enemy attempting to face the Pact by forcing them to send more air units to distant theatres of war.

untitled396.jpg

The much publicized expansion of the Kriegsmarine has now made it a potent force yet no nations of the Berlin Pact have followed the German example. Ever since regaining independence Italy had been reconstructing its navy, yet she lacked the funds to build capital ships and had been limited to constructing large destroyer groups (and more recently light cruisers) with the supreme power of the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean the Italian Fleet has little hope of survival but it would manage to tie the British Mediterranean Fleet down for many months, distracting it from the more potent threat of the Kriegsmarine. Venezuela’s fleet is mostly a new construction, population growth has not followed her industrial boom and so the world’s largest oil exporter has begun to consume some of her own as Venezuela now fields the second most powerful fleet in the Caribbean after the US fleet based out of Colon. Finally the second most powerful Pact fleet, and the only other than German with Capital Ships, The Argentine Navy has also recently expanded with the construction of some new destroyer squadrons but the focus of the fleet remains on the two Battleships.

The two Rivadavia Class battleships were first launched just prior to the Great War and were then rebuilt during the mid-1920s, they may be old but their powerful guns give the Pact undisputed naval supremacy over the nations of Latin America.

As Manstein stepped away Heuss readied himself for the next two presentations which would detail the expected strength of both NAPTO and the Soviet Union. Although not in an official alliance ever since the NAPTO embargo against the Berlin Pact began both Churchill and Truman had been looking to gain the support of Lavrenti Beria and earlier in 1948 the US, UK and Soviet Union had signed the Tripartite Pact of Mutual Friendship where they agreed to share information of ‘mutual importance’ and assist each other economically. Fearing encirclement by an ever strengthening opponent Heuss knew that this would be his one and only chance to secure the German Empire once and for all, if he didn’t go to war now then Germany would have to give up so much, to allow Communism to survive, to bow before a new master across the Ocean.

Sorry for mixin up tenses and stuff whilst writing, hopefully it is still readable.

I'll try to do it better for the next part of the meeting :)

Woah, a huge army!!!
The greatest armies the world has ever seen shall soon bleed each other empty!
How fast has China built those divisions!!!
What's their IC?

Berlin should take control over all Pact forces!

Whoa boy! If you can get those guys to the mainland USA, they will be screwd, ripped apart and destroyed completely. I'm just curious if USA has built anything really useful..

@ Enewald: the Chinese built up that beast from nothing in just 4 years with only 116 effective IC , one of the few of my puppets who dont produce bellow thie potential as I give them so much free resources.

(just think about what the USA did in that time with more than three times as much IC and over the past year almost 4 times as much)

@ ImTheSheep: according to my spies (which even with 10 really under guess strength) they have plenty to oppose me with. But thats something you'll find out tommorow ;)

I will tell you this though, in the past year the Americans built 10 tank divs, 30-40 infantry divs a bunch of planes and even then they were focused on thier navy

400 IC goes a long way ....

The Meeting at the Reichswehr Headquarters – Part 2

Hans Oster, head of the Abwehr, would lead the presentation the military strengths of three main opponents of the Reich: Great Britain, The United States and The Soviet Union. Although any war would aim to eventually defeat all of them it would be vital that the Pact kept out of a war with them all at the same time.

untitled397.jpg

Out of the three nations Britain was in some ways the strongest and in other ways the weakest. Spy reports estimates around 1.4 million infantrymen in the British army but with just 10 armored divisions they lacked the numbers to use their armored forces independently of the main army as Germany so often did. The RAF was also relatively powerful with a large force of fighters and interceptors but a lack of offensive air power. The Royal Navy too fell short of that owned by other Great Powers yet German intelligence could admit that these numbers are far from exact. Within the space of a couple of days 21 Capital Ships were sighted near Sicily whilst a further 8 were seen in the North Sea, with just 25 listed in all and only two of Britain’s dozens of main fleets seen it is assumed that the Royal Navy is considerably more powerful than these reports would have the Reichswehr believe.

centurion-main-battle-tank-2.jpg

Although lacking the numbers of other major powers the British make up for it in technological prowess that matches that of the Reichswehr. The Centurion Tank (pictured above) matches the Standardpanzer in conventional terms but also has the added bonus of being able to carry up to a dozen infantrymen atop itself. These infantrymen give the tank protection from any enemy troops equipped with anti-tank weaponry and act as an effective counter to ambushes, the Empire have used them extensively to quell the most serious revolts over the passed few years and they have recently been upgraded further with a larger gun emplacement and stronger armor. The RAF is also the only air force on earth able to match the Luftwaffe for quality making it arguably the most dangerous foe in the skies. However, surprisingly the Royal Navy has not followed the army and air force in this technological leap forward. The sheer cost of building new Capital Ships has meant that very few modern models have been constructed since the end of the war (perhaps a handful of Carriers) and the majority of the Navy’s Capital ships were built during the 1930s and even 1920s.

British-commonwealth.gif

Another thing worth noting concerning the British Empire is the Commonwealth. The nations of South Africa, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Nepal, Bhutan, Iraq, Oman and Yemen make up the British Commonwealth which is an institution of the British Empire and the armed forces of these nations are geared towards the protection of the Empire, if these troops are considered a part of the British arsenal (alongside the militaries of the British puppet states of Spain and the Congo) then they hold the largest land army on earth with upwards of 4 million men.

untitled398.jpg

The US armed forces are quite frankly, terrifying. 2.2 million infantrymen, an armored force twice the size of Germany’s and with the same level of technology, an air force of slightly greater numbers (although only at Turbojet level as Improved Turbojets are still being developed), a fleet of modern Capital Ships 2-3 times the number of Germany’s and enough smaller ships to match the entire Berlin Pact Navy alone. It is also known that these estimates (for the air force at least) must be inaccurate as the US had slightly more aircraft during the short lived Bombay Pact that these reports claim and no major scrapages have been undertaken.

m26.jpg

In terms of technology despite lagging behind in air force strength the Americans can match both Britain and Germany on land with the M-26 amongst others leading the line of the largest and most powerful tank army on the planet.

usarmyparade.jpg

Whilst the US does field the mightiest armed forces the planet has ever witnessed the one major problem that faces the American army is a lacking of the capable Generals of the caliber of those in Britain and Germany. If the US experiences of WWII are anything to go by the current leaders of the US army seem unsure of how exactly to use this outstanding military strength, hoping to avoid getting involved in another bloodbath like Japan the US army has been positioned very defensively. The US enclaves in Asia have been lightly defended with barely over 100,000 men on mainland Asia whilst huge forces stand in the defense of the US mainland and Japan. This defensive doctrine may give Germany the window of opportunity she needs to strike hard and fast against NAPTO in an attempt to even the odds.

untitled399.jpg

When Lavrenti Beria took over the Soviet Union in 1942 the nations armed forces were all but non-existent: the entire Red Air force had been destroyed by the German and Japanese, the Baltic fleet had been sunk by the Germans and the Far Eastern fleet by the Japanese and the Red Army consisted of barely 100,000 dissatisfied soldiers such was the utter defeat of the Soviet Union by Germany and Japan. But in just 6 years Beria has marshaled a military recovery unlike any other, in spite of limited amounts of manpower (due to the loss of European Russia) the Red Army now numbers over 2.2 million with a large armored force to boot. In order to focus his expansions Beria avoided the reconstruction of the Red Air force but research has continued as the first Turbojet prototypes recently became operable. Yet perhaps the most remarkable military expansion was the rebuilding of the Red Navy, with the nation now focused on the Far East it was felt that a Navy could counter any potential NAPTO attack whilst also allowing the Red Army to focus on less fronts in the event of war with the Berlin Pact. In recent times relations with NAPTO have warmed and Soviet naval expansions have halted with more focus on the expansion and improvement of the Red Army.

With the comparison of armies now over Heuss was left with the decision whether or not to go to war. Combined the Berlin Pact held around 7.5 million military personnel (2.5 million of which were German) yet NAPTO could field well over 8 million and if combined with the Soviets Germany could potentially face considerably over 10 million enemy belligerents. Yet the trump card was surely in German hands in the form of 4 Fission bombs, even without an effective method of delivery they surely tipped the balance acting like an insurance policy should all go wrong. Heuss commission an elite team of Generals to develop a strategy to win this war, they would have one month.

Unholy shit! That US army surely is damn scary. And look at that navy. 30 carriers? If you are able to get through of those I'll be surprised.. I wish you luck! :D

Just bomb all the airfields where the most planes are with nukes, eliminating their air forces maybe totally, then a bit surprise attack there and there. :p
A huge landing to UK... just take 50 divisions from China and use them as the first canon fodder wave...

Hmmm, did you release former communist countries like France?

As the defender of freedom and democracy, think you should!

@ Enewald: I couldn't really bomb their airfields as the US airforce seems to be everywhere, I saw them over Helsinki, Seoul, Nanjing, Madrid, London and Rome after about a day of war

as for nuking I wont use any straight away but will firing them at willingly at any dirty commies and might destroy a US city or two if things ever start to slow down. ;)

I initially wanted to leave the Chinese millions to the Chinese millions but I think there is no AI file for them as the Chinese millions just sat there for a few days looking menacing before I had to takeover the Chinese millions myself, which is a real pain as there are millions of them.

@ Beledriel:

This was a map of Europe just after i finished off the last European Fascists. Only changes since then are: Macedonia to Bulgaria and Karelia to Finland. Also Spain and Britain are no longer my allies :(

so France is independant but punished pretty heavily having lost its whole Empire, a huge slice of Metroplitan France AND I dont give them any resources so their factories function at a really low level.

Then maybe you should give them some resources so they can be of more use............

Nuking USA is useless at least in vanilla. If you nuke them enough, their dissent will go +50 +60, I cant remember the level but anyway somewhere there they will have event which makes them either communist or SOC.
Oh, found the event, hooray!

Operation Unthinkable – Plan for a German First Strike Against NAPTO

Over early September a crack team of German Generals lead by von Manstein, Guderian and von Blomberg, the same team who had planned the German Blitzkriegs of WWII, devised a plan for a first strike against the NAPTO alliance that would give Germany the advantage in the inevitable war. Although not released at the time a quote used by Genera Heinz Guderian would later become famous for its extensive use in German propaganda ‘’If we remain perpetually on the attack, never allowing the enemy a moments respite then we cannot fail’’ in keeping with the Blitzkrieg Doctrine the Germans planned to strike hard and strike fast against NAPTO in Europe, hopefully defeating the alliance totally on the Continent within 1-2 months. In Asia however things would be very different as the Asian members of the Berlin Pact lacked the equipment for a Blitzkrieg attack so the tactic was quite simple: secure the entire eastern seaboard of Asia and hold on until the Reichswehr arrives.

untitled401.jpg

In China Chiang Kaishek was tasked with defeating an army a little over 100,000 men strong defending the American Chinese Territory (ACT) with his 2 million man army, having refused to allow the Berlin Pact authority to take control of the Chinese army this would be one of the few fronts out of the hands of the German Generals in Berlin. In Korea the combined armies of the People’s Republic of Korea and the Empire of Manchuria, numbering 350,000 men, were tasked with overrunning the 200,000 man army of American backed South Korea. Whilst on the outset this tasked seemed extremely easy it must be noted that NAPTO will enjoy utter aerial supremacy over Korea which could (if used effectively) slow the Berlin Pact advance long enough to get aid to the South Koreans.

untitled402.jpg

In South East Asia the aim is to hold a defensive line roughly along the current Burmese eastern border with a few minor alterations to ease the burden of defending the area. The army of Siam shall be used for offensive operations, being tasked with capturing the American Indochinese Enclave (AIE) and the invasion o the Malay Peninsula with the ultimate aim of securing Singapore.

untitled403.jpg

Out in the barren western reaches of China the armies of Sinkiang and the Chinese Islamic Republic were tasked with the simple mission of doing nothing. An offensive here by either side would benefit no one and only distract much needed men form more important fronts.

untitled404.jpg

Back in Europe the Reichswehr had prepared itself for its the first traditional Blitzkrieg for 6 years. With a narrow numerical advantage it was a top priority for the Germans to encircle and destroy as much of the Spanish army as possible. Using an entirely German army with the exception of 20,000 Basques the Reichswehr hoped to make encirclements around Oviedo, Tarragona and Madrid within the first week or two of the war thus crippling the Spanish army. Crossing the Pyrenees at Huesca would be the entire Gebirgsjäger, slightly farther south an army of mechanised and motorised infantry would move forward to seize Barcelona before halting east of Tarragona. It would be from the Basque homeland around Bilbao that the real push would be launched: Panzerarmies would breakthrough at Sargasso and move southward towards Valencia (encircling Tarragona as they go), to the west more Panzerarmies would race to La Coruna and trap a large Spanish force in the mountains along the Bay of Biscay, the main thrust would go straight to wards Madrid before splitting up just before reaching the city to completely encircle it and leave the last vestiges of Spanish resistance in the South open for attack. On this front the Luftwaffe would contribute a very large force with a ‘lop-sided’ force favouring offensive aircraft to provided ground support.

untitled405.jpg

The most important part of the entirety of Operation Unthinkable was the success of the invasion of Great Britain. Here 2/3 of the Luftwaffe’s fighters and interceptors were readied in their bases in Northern France and Flanders and one million Germans were prepared to follow the example of William the Bastard and Cross over from Normandy. Yet the first stage of the invasion would be the most important as 12 divisions of Fallschirmjäger looked to secure Dover, and safe passage for the huge invasion force. With the Kriegsmarine lying in wait there was little hope of the British being able to defeat the German fleet as it ferried the army over from Normandy so the fate of the British Isles would be decided by the success or failure of the Fallschirmjäger at Dover.

Since the war is coming over to my homeland things re going to get a little bit more detailed (there is going to a battle of Jedburgh). What I want to know is whether I will need lots and lots of maps of the UK?

I hope the britons in Dover shall be surprised since they can't be enough clever to think anything suspicious about the huge german navy they constantly see.
