The Crusade seems to be going okay. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Welsh crusaders fare.
The Crusade won't probably last much longer as the Catholics already have 70% war score.

One funny fact: Maelcwn has somehow gathered the most amount of points in the Crusade, meaning that if there wasn't a Queen of Jerusalem already, the Welsh would have got the Holy Land.

So a firm, experienced hand is the choice - with the probably knowledge it won't be too long before they can exercise a new choice.
This system of inheritance is really giving us old rulers. I think it is starting to be high time to change to Primogeniture.

Recap of the Dinefwr Dynasty Thus Far

King Hywel “the Just” Dinefwr (reigned 1122-1182):
  • Hywel created the Kingdom of Brythoniaid, becoming the first Dinefwr King ever.
  • He also conquered many Irish provinces and created the duchies of Leinster and Meath.
  • He participated in the Second Crusade for Jerusalem, ensuring himself a place in the Heavens, even though he is known for his homosexual habits.
  • Hywel died of a severe case of stress at the age of 65. He ruled as the duke of Deheubarth for 60 years and as the King of Brythoniaid for three decades.
  • He made the Welsh realm use the succession law system called Tanistry.

King Conamail “the Gentle” Dinefwr (reigned 1182-1231):
  • Conamail was the first “elected” King of Brythoniaid. Though if we are precise, his grandfather Hywel was the only one allowed to vote.
  • Before his coronation as the King, Conamail reigned as the Petty King of Connachta. His succession to the throne of Brythoniaid brought the Irish duchy under Welsh rule.
  • Conamail hunted for a magical beast called White Stag for years. He was never able to catch it.
  • Start of the Conamail’s reign was complicated by an evil spirit that lived inside him. A priest was able to expel the demon but before his passing, Conamail contracted Great Pox and also become lunatic.
  • Conamail created the Kingdom of Iwerddon, the Kingdom of Irish, by conquering many provinces of the little isle.
  • Before his death he also conquered the Kingdom of Alban, the Kingdom of Scots, with his claim.
  • Conamail passed away because of his illnesses at the age of 65.

King Casnar “the Monster” Dinefwr (reigned 1231-1250):
  • Casnar was a mere count in Iwerddon before he was elected as the sovereign of the Kingdoms of Brythoniaid and Iwerddon. The Kingdom of Alban went to his grandnephew, who made it a republic.
  • Casnar was excommunicated before he became a King. During his reign as the supreme ruler, he was able to persuade the Pope to lift his ban.
  • Casnar made the republic of Alban pay tribute to him, basically bringing his relative’s realm under his control.
  • Casnar also conquered the last de jure province of Brythoniaid from the Anglo-Saxons, before giving up the ghost at the age of 76.
King Gwrgeneu Dinefwr (reigned 1250-1253):
  • Gwrgeneu was an unlanded courtier before he was chosen to be the next King. He was elected due to the vassals wanting a weak ruler.
  • Gwrgeneu went into hiding in the fear of being assassinated.
  • He died three years into his reign from a severe case of flu in his hiding place. He did not live to see his 39th birthday.

King Maelcwn “the Bold” Dinefwr (reign started 1253):
  • Maelcwn was the duke of Connacht before being elected as the new King.
  • He started his reign by raising every possible warrior of the realm and leading them to the Holy Land to participate in the Fourth Crusade for Jerusalem.

Rest of the Dinefwr Family

The most important descendants of late King Hywel of Brythoniaid (unlanded and childless characters are not shown):

There is also one Dinefwr ruler who isn’t a descendant of Hywel. Ingjerd is the great-granddaughter of Hywel’s sister Annest. Due to marriages inside the Dinefwr dynasty, Ingjerd is a cousin of Maelcwn.

The World circa 1255

Albion and Iwerddon:

The Celtic parts of these two isles have experienced rather big changes in the past hundred years. Most of them have happened thanks to the Welsh dynasty of Dinefwr. The late King Conamail of Brythoniaid conquered both the lands of Irish and Scots during his reign. The Kingdom of Irish, called Iwerddon, remained as a part of the Welsh realm after Conamail’s passing, but the Kingdom of Scots, called Alban, became an independent republic under a Dinefwr sovereign. To this day, the Celtic Kingdoms have not been united under a single banner.

The Kingdom of England hasn’t changed as much. The Anglo-Saxons still control the same areas as 100 years ago, with the only exception being the province of Perfeddwlad. Probably the only noteworthy happening in the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom is the succession. The Kingdom isn’t ruled by the dynasty of Hwicce anymore. The former duke of Essex was installed to the throne by a rebellion in the year of 1250. He was a member of the house Marshal. He passed away from cancer three years ago and now the Kingdom has a new Marshal King. With the new ruler came a new succession crisis with the of Hwicce demanding the throne back.

Northern Europe:

The Northern parts of the Christian world are the most boring area. The only thing worthy of note in the Scandinavian region is the Scottish expansion into Norge. The Scottish rulers of the Kingdom of Jerusalem have controlled half of the Norwegian lands for decades now.

In the eastern side of the Baltic Sea the Finnish population remains heretic without any intentions of praising any Christian religion. The Estonian and Lithuanian lands have come under the Catholic influence and most of the Baltics have forgotten their Romuva past, with the exception of one stubborn Lettigallian ruler.

Western Europe:

The Kingdom of Aquitaine has remained independent all these years and now thanks to some lucky inheritance, the large realm of Castille has come under the rule of the Aquitanian house de Poitou. The Kingdom of France has also taken her own share of the Iberian peninsula by conquering the southern parts of it. The Reconquista has been fulfilled, though not by the Hispanics but by the French!

The two French Kingdoms do not control everything in Western Europe. The Welsh still hold to the two provinces in the Western Iberia. The Breton duchy has remained independent all these years, even though it has lost couple of holdings to the French. The Kingdom of Navarre has not been inherited by the Aquitanians, but it is pretty much under their control. The Kingdom of Barcelona is also an independent realm. The Catalan Kingdom is a power to reckon with.

Central and Southern Europe:

Expectedly the Holy Roman Empire is still the most powerful realm of Europe. Its sphere of influence reaches from the German lands of north to the Italian regions of south. Many Italians have added German ways and traditions into their lives, making the Italian cultures slowly become more and more rare. The Hanseatic League is a new player in the German politics with its ever growing trade around the North and Baltic Seas.

To east from the German realm lies the Kingdoms of Poland and Hungary. The Polish Kingdom has been under the firm rule of the house Piast since the 10th century. It has been able to remain independent even with several possible enemies surrounding it. The Hungarians have not been as defensive as the Poles. They have expanded eastwards a whole lot more.

The Byzantine Empire has seen better days. The Greeks have lost several times to the Turks of the East, slowly losing their control of the Anatolian region. With the Byzantine influence decreasing in the Mediterranean, the Most Serene Republic of Venice and Pisa have both expanded their trade posts to every corner of the vast Sea.

One odd development has taken place in the island of Sicily. It is currently under the control of the Swiss Company. Indeed, a mercenary band. The Swiss mercenaries conquered the city of Napoli some decades ago and from there they expanded their influence to Sicily. It remains to be seen if such an open elective realm can hold onto its many new areas.

Eastern Europe:

Eastern Europe is… one big mess. The Hungarian lust for more land has brought them back to the Ural mountains! The only thing stopping them from going even further east is the Mongol Empire. Currently the eastern vassals of Hungary are revolting. The King of Magyars has already been changed several times by rebellions and it seems like it will be once again.

Some other thing worthy of mentioning: The Mongol Empire holds some land in the area of Novgorod. The Christian Holy Order, Teutonic Order, is a vassal of the Mongol Empire by holding one of the provinces of Novgorod. Also, the Holy Roman Empire has spread its influence to the northern parts of Eastern Europe. Do not ask how. The last interesting development in this area is the Byzantine control of Eastern Russian land. As I said, Eastern Europe is just a mess.

Africa:

The borders of Africa aren’t that pretty neither. The Republic of Pisa still holds a large chunk of land in the coastal area, but the Fatimid Caliphate has once again risen and is now the most powerful power in the continent. The Caliphate has spread Shia Muslim to the Berber lands killing most of the heresies that once prospered in the region, with the only exception being the Sultanate of Zalelsan, which still practises its Zikri ways.

Some of the dry deserts of inner Africa are currently under the control of the Catalonian King. The Catholic realms of France and Iberia once conquered vast amounts of land in the continent of Africa. Nowadays the only reminder of this Christian rule is Barcelona’s last holdings.

Middle East is split between three major powers: the Fatimite Caliphate, the Seljuk Sultanate… and the Seljuk Sultanate? Indeed, the parts of the region that are not in the Fatimite control are under the rule of the Seljuk dynasty. The family holds two Sultanates and one of them is simply called the Sultanate of Persia to avoid confusion. Both of the Seljuk nations are Sunni Muslim, making them bitter rivals of the Fatimite Shia Caliph.

Very nice recap.

Very nice recap.
Thank you! I tried to make it as simple and short as possible but it still came out little long.

A well-detailed view of how things stand currently. Dynasty trees in tanistry become a tangled mess, cheers for pointing out how everyone is related.
I really like to check how the relatives of my character are doing from time to time, so I enjoy doing these recaps.
The process of making this family tree was quite a hassle though. For example, I had forgotten to put two characters in the final picture and thus had to edit them in. :D

Chapter 24: Two Nights Before Christmas
Chapter 24: Two Nights Before Christmas
1255-1262

Maelcwn has arrived in the Holy Land with his army twelve thousand men strong. The Catholics have already beaten most of the enemy Mohammedans in the area, and the rightful Christian land is free to be taken back.

Before the Welsh warriors are able to capture even a single stronghold, the Pope declares the Crusade to be won. The last and the most important battle took place tens of miles south from the location of Maelcwn’s army. Even though Maelcwn wasn’t able to take part in any battle, he is still considered a Crusader.

JOkMl0qEpGqYwlOdy7mSL2sZJzi6KcHDbos4lQcHrs_HcjxJC4gzBHUwwAs1fxVSH8AJKCCpaic3rTwTixIOxieK0UY3aZmKcg5DFnYkgk5jtIzwofpbLO53vm0qfhzVtqg4PI0Z

Maelcwn decides to visit the city of Jerusalem, the holy place where Christ was crucified, now that he has a great opportunity to do so. After spending couple of days praying there, he gets back to leading his army. They have a long journey ahead. A journey that will later be remembered as the Trail of Devastation.

Maelcwn orders his fleet to pick the army up in the Byzantine capital of Constantinople. The trip to Constantinople is supposed to be an easy and quick travel. What Maelcwn doesn’t foresee is the devastating diseases that soon take over the areas between Holy Land and the Byzantine Empire. As the Welsh warriors footslog forward, they pass by many dying villages and towns. Diseases like Smallpox and Measles have taken many lives, and eventually they hit the Welsh army too. Many warriors die on the way to Constantinople, and the rest that survive are all sickly and hungry. By the time Maelcwn and his group of soldiers arrive in Constantinople, the army of 12000 men has shrunk to 7000 men. Before his army gets aboard the fleet that has been waiting for them, Maelcwn donates 100 gold coins to the local Church. Later the Pope and the Dominican Order, which Maelcwn was part of, hears of the Welsh journey and Maelcwn’s generosity. They give him the respected religious title of a Commissus. And later Pope even sends Maelcwn a finger bone of a Saint.

The sea trip back to Dyfed isn’t an easy one either. Maelcwn, and many of his men, become sick and eventually contract scurvy. Once home, the Court Physician tells Maelcwn to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Eventually the illness goes away.

But like seeing many diseases on his way to home isn’t enough, Maelcwn’s realm comes under the wrath of Measles. Even the capital Dyfed! To appease God and hopefully make the disease disappear, Maelcwn takes the vow of celibacy and donates three hundred little pieces of gold to the holy order of Knights Hospitaller.

OBKd6qjX6mtfxK0s0oTyUC-c6iUlHLtCxGABD5JIBVqDmmrdRyeuvH_kPczf8s91iEuF0aOBgveqD_qda_7hc8AIlSfSJ0RohHUDTRXY33jdoGIZSVnbnPvOWJ7Ql4caiGMdxVHM

But it seems like these acts of piety are not enough. First Maelcwn’s daughter becomes sick. Then his second daughter too. After that his wife and eventually even he himself becomes ill! One of Maelcwn’s courtiers tells him about this one heretic healer that is willing to help Maelcwn and his family. Being the zealot he is, Maelcwn refuses to even meet the pagan.

While trying to survive measles in the protection of his own castle, Maelcwn receives news from Iberia. The local population in a Welsh ruled province has rose in a revolt. Even though he is ill, Maelcwn gathers an army of 4000 men and leads it to the rebellious province, where the King’s warriors destroy the joke of an uprising. The leader of the rebellion is crushed to death as a punishment.

Back home, Maelcwn decides to pray for couple of days. In seclusion. The praying was really worth it as two days later Maelcwn says that he has found a new connection with the Lord. Maelcwn is even more happy the day after his seclusion ended as his only grandson, Cyndyddan, asks for his permission to join Knights of Calatrava. He gets Maelcwn’s blessing right away. Maelcwn even gives his grandson 100 gold coins to bring to the Order, as a gift.

In March of 1258, something unbelievable happens. Something that has not been seen since the reign of Conamail! The three Celtic Kingdoms are once again united under a single banner! Maelcwn has inherited the Most Serene Republic of Alban from his late relative Mihangel! The inheritance laws of the Republic have been changed by a rebellion some years ago. The new system makes the eldest person of the ruling dynasty the heir to the throne. And so it happens to be that Maelcwn is the oldest member of his grand house!

3004LEv86JezOF1v1fvdQVDuY4EvAYPDvYH59-T-CXV7qpanmVz2jkJWPvbC6xKR8pS0em43aPm16uD7WjraO4GS6hehymt5Gxxkc450cQz27dgfjZ_nm8Q9fX6GWw6e0qW5SXAk

Sadly the new Kingdom brings war with it. The King of Norge has declared a war against Mihangel for one Scottish province. And as Mihangel is no longer alive, the Norwegian King has to face Maelcwn. The enemy army is besieging castles in Northern Scotland. To defend his new domains, Maelcwn gathers an army of over 5500 men and marches with them to Alban.

The enemy invaders are beat time and time again by Maelcwn’s men and in December 1258, the King of Norge agrees to a white peace. Maelcwn is just happy that he can get back home to recover from his illness.

In the following year Maelcwn gets a mission from the Dominican Order. The members have decided that a new church should be build in the Welsh realm. Maelcwn obviously agrees and orders a new temple to be constructed in the Welsh province of Gwynedd.

While the new church is being built, Maelcwn addresses one big problem: the disapproval of his vassals. All the nobles of the vast Welsh Kingdom say that Maelcwn controls too many counties and duchies directly. To please his subjects, Maelcwn gives most of his extra titles away. He makes his 15-years-old son Asa the duke of Connachta and one of his new Scottish vassals the duke Strathclyde.

The following year, 1260, is a really good year. No war of any kind disturbs the peace of Brythoniaid and its sovereign is able stay home and rest. Before the end of the year, Maelcwn is no longer sick. He has got rid of measles. He is so grateful for surviving the disease that he once again donates 300 pieces of gold. This time to Knights Templars. Also, little before Christmas of 1260, the temple is ready. As a thanks, Maelcwn is promoted to the highest rank of the Dominican Order, Conversus. With this most important title, Maelcwn finally realises that he should get rid of his aggressive nature. It is something that is not expected from a Conversus.

_6_syDgm8Z6f0_W8K7Xq_FnXBxZyjzfuGU-zpV5WY7zGB2S3KQaUpeQFg0EN-OgfYG6i-IK5azFk8s_WQeRWE53SeCp5bYNRvrJAJ4bppctfQO_SpMVOgGHK4IVLSjtIEHB4CrIl

In May 1261 Maelcwn’s youngest child, Elidyr, reaches adulthood. Maelcwn wants to give his second son a land to rule too, as his brother is the duke of Connachta. Eventually Maelcwn decides to give the county of Zamora to Elidyr. This is a quite interesting move as the two Welsh controlled provinces in Iberia have thus far always been under the King’s direct control.

VG794iLu88KIWMW7NqmiWcj0ZovEBkrgYDU3KMIKZkMuQKJBiMo0q1tSEzKqrsHwfmFNRKSBHFF4cl0TMAlThESEsDvUmjkLVmi-F6W38KrofVdvwXOdWQ1DWexu_TK0k-4ms1R-

In February 1262 Maelcwn decides to go for a pilgrimage. He is already 70 and doesn’t have much time left on Earth. After some thinking he decides to visit the city of Rome, the home of the Holy Father. Before he leaves for the trip, he donates another 100 gold coins to charity.

The trip starts well, but half way to Rome, Maelcwn ends up in an accident. The inn he is sleeping in sets aflame! He wakes up to the heat and smell of smoke. Not wanting to just run away like a coward, he helps others fight the fire! They are successful in putting the flames down, and even though Maelcwn gets couple of little burns, it was worth it as he will be remembered for his bravery.

Eventually Maelcwn arrives at Rome, the Eternal City. He is really fascinated by the greatness of the city and he will never regret going there. Sadly, all fun comes to an end, and soon Maelcwn is already departing for home.

Maelcwn gets home well before Christmas. He decides to take it easy for the rest of the year. Sadly Maelcwn doesn’t live to see the next year. On 23th December 1262, just two nights before Christmas, he passes away in his sleep at the age of 71. He will be remembered for his zealous nature and for reigning over all the three Celtic Kingdoms. Unfortunately the great realm is once again split due to different inheritance laws…

I've been super busy (once again) due to having many exams this week. I'm (once again) sorry for the wait. Hope you enjoy the chapter! :D

Sounds like he got the pilgrimage done just in time.

As for exams, don't worry about it. Far more important that the AAR. I hope they go/have gone well.

Yeah, quite excellent timing. For once it looks like our character passed away without leaving something undone.

And thank you. I still got my English exam coming up, but what could be a better way to study for it than write an AAR? :D

The three Celtic Kingdoms are once again united under a single banner! Maelcwn has inherited the Most Serene Republic of Alban from his late relative Mihangel!

Weeell, England just spoiled its toilet.

Fortunately for them, Christmas came two days early and split Scotland back up again. Otherwise it would have been the endgame for unifying the islands.

And boy, Aquitaine is huge. Are they doing that well in France as well or are they going to become an Iberian focused power?

Aquitaine was doing well in the 1260s (the decade the last chapter ended in).
I decided to go in-game to get a screenshot of the Aquitanian greatness, and this is what I was greeted with:

nyxhCMD.jpg

The year is 1272 (technically not spoilers as I do not mention Aquitaine at all in the next chapter :D) and the Aquitaine has split into (rather rebel-full) Aragon and Aquitaine. Both are still ruled by the Poitou family, but seeing that amount of revolts, I wonder how long.

Maelcwn is an example to the Welsh on how to safeguard one's soul.

It's a pity that Alban has split off once more. But the dynasty is still in pretty good condition.
Maelcwn ended up being the most religious person of the Dinefwr family thus far. The Welsh will surely look back to his reign as a pious one.

Alban is a really tricky Kingdom as it has totally different inheritance laws than the rest. And because our characters are usually rather old when they rise to power (thanks to Tanistry), they never live long enough to merge the succession laws of the three titles. :(

Chapter 25: Word of an Epidemic
Chapter 25: Word of an Epidemic
1262-1272

The nobles of the Kingdom of Brythoniaid have elected a new ruler, King Enfidaig. He is the cousin of last King Maelcwn and the son of late King Casnar. His late wife was Duchess Åse Dinefwr, his cousin once removed. Sadly she has departed this life because of cancer. Now their only child, 2-years-old Ragna, is the Duchess of Meath. Meanwhile Enfidaig has already got a new wife, a young and pretty Scottish lady named Beathoc.

Being only 23 years old, Enfidaig is expected to reign for decades. In addition to being youthful, he is also known for being charitable, gregarious and content with his life. It remains to be seen if he will be such a nice person in his older days. Reigning as the King is known to not be an easy and relaxing task. Furthermore, he has a strong claim on the Kingdom of Alban. Many of the Welsh nobility have voted for Enfidaig because they want to see all the three Celtic Kingdoms united once and for all.

clG_8RggCuMHXduEwTca2x2w2_SUC7hDv9kECKxJG7JycsPW4mqSDafRfvfDe55G_QpA7whHBtGMJrHVrg0WdY9lEr3sAkyyoiSqrYPkRkc1Jz5N-T5qgsF-it3NlXVFlV2olvTG

Enfidaig’s reign starts with the usual coronation. His coronation ceremony is rather small and modest. After the ritual of crowning, Enfidaig quickly settles down in the castle of Dinefwr. The first letter he receives as a King is from his spymaster, Gwrgant Dinefwr. His relative warns him of huge outbreaks of smallpox. Large parts of the continent of Europe have been taken over by this gruesome disease, and it has just arrived in the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom. The extent of this epidemic makes the winter of 1263 later be remembered as the Winter of Smallpox. Luckily the plague dies away before ever reaching Brythoniaid.

dlcNz-JVRCgo_J4LK4E3ELBBqajWCL99p15TZBSDFqvNIQK4d1XlsW3B0V3uj2NlGHlVMbievyFVFGX8ZQe6WRlkMnQp6SkOxAyXzVaCJb-yQ7jGzLGsJSGw0pWH_F8FwhcAp8iv

Couple of interesting news arrive from foreign lands in the summer of 1265. Firstly, the Kingdom of Hungary with its vast land areas has become a vassal of the ever-growing Mongol Empire. The Mongolian state now borders the Holy Roman Empire! Secondly, the King of Alban, a relative of Enfidaig, has been overthrown by a rebellion. A Scottish Dunkeld now holds the title of King of Scots! Outrageous! Enfidaig promises to do something about this once a good opportunity comes.

The following year it’s finally time for Enfidaig to face some difficulties. Over 5000 Irish rebels have risen to a revolt in the province of Ulster and they demand one thing: independence. Enfidaig gathers 7000 able men to form an army. He puts three of his best generals in control of it and gives them only one mission: Kill the rebellion. Enfidaig doesn’t lead the army himself as he is quite… well an extremely bad military leader.

While the Welsh army is still marching to Ulster, Enfidaig’s Steward tells him about rumours he has heard. Many residents of Dyfed are talking about this mysterious artifact that back in the days belonged to Hywel Dinefwr, the grandfather of Enfidaig and the man who unified Wales. Peasantry say that the artifact protects its holder from any disease possible. Enfidaig doesn’t really believe that such an artifact could exist, but he still allows his Steward to search for it.

Back to the rebellion. It is crushed in short order as soon as the Welsh army arrives in Ulster. A quick battle takes place, but the ill-equipped Irish rebels quickly give up and run away. Anyone that is caught, is slayed. It seems like the populace of Ulster did not learn from the last time they rebelled twenty years backwards. This time the leader of the peasant rebellion is burnt at a stake in the city centre of Ulster. To make the show even more memorable, many other rebels are also burnt the same night. The mess is left for the residents of the town to clean up.

coWxTH_FoVdlK88OBV2tvVLc_8e4NQWYaPm6T0-7VIRS4AbjIC5iJtEIhMJrooijjrvAVcMoA0PFF7Xo69ROj9dP1MqJ7GZYga-GYw0bXvbAF8YWkxDakt4wGOWjcL9fGrZAucfv

Thanks to his peaceful nature, Enfidaig gets a nickname amongst the peasantry of his realm. Everyone has started to call him “The Holy”. He is really proud of his nickname, often using it in formal documents and such. Enfidaig’s personality has not got any worse during the years, unlike many had expected. No, instead he is said to be even more kind than when he was crowned the King.

Many are wondering why Enfidaig hasn’t already invaded the Kingdom of Scotland. He simply tells that it is not wise to attack Scotland yet as it’s still in the middle of a civil war. Indeed, the Scots have been fighting each other for years nonstop. It is rather comical how only the Welsh are able to rule a vast realm without often experiencing huge rebellions.

In summer 1272, initially a small fire in the city of Dyfed quickly gets out of hands. It seems like nothing could stop it and it rampages through the city for several days. Eventually it reaches the soup kitchen of the local hospital complex! When the fire is finally put down, it has already made some huge damage, including a total destruction of the soup kitchen. Luckily the peasants have such a great man like Enfidaig as their ruler. He spends a huge amount of his personal wealth to ensure that the soup kitchen is reconstructed and that the poor are fed while it’s being build.

Not long after the fire of Dyfed, news reach the Kingly court. A plague unheard-of has done some pretty bad harm in the East. It is feared that it might spread westwards, but Enfidaig isn’t worried. Same was said about the Mongols, and the Welsh have yet to meet even one Mongolian person. Still, most skeptical of people hope that the artifact of Hywel is soon found: just to make sure.

Mmm, that news is not good.

"The Lucky" might be a more appropriate title for Enfidaig. ;)

Let's hope that his luck holds and that the reaper doesn't pay special attention to Wales!
We can only hope that the plague doesn't reach the Welsh realm. I'm afraid that not even the grand hospital of Dyfed or artifact of Hywel could help against this evil disease!

Chapter 26: Flagellants
Chapter 26: Flagellants
1272-1278

Rumours of the evil plague in east don’t bother Enfidaig. He continues with his ordinary life like always, quietly reigning from his castle, making sure the Welsh realm is doing well. After the soup kitchen of the hospital of Dyfed is rebuilt, Enfidaig starts expanding the infirmary even more, just to ensure the wellbeing of the Welsh capital.

The year 1273 passes by without anything worthy of note happening. On the first day of the following January, Enfidaig’s court receives new rumours of the much talked-about epidemic. It has, in less than two years, stretched from the unknown lands of east all the way to the glorious capital of the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople. It seems like this pestilence is really something to be worried about…

In March 1274, the ludicrous Dunkeld King of Scotland proposes a royal marriage between the dynasties of Dunkeld and Dinefwr. The Welsh court has a good laugh at the Scot’s suggestion before sending a negative response. Only if the Dunkelds knew that once the petty civil war of Scotland is over, the Welsh are going to invade their weak realm.

Enfidaig could use some more laughable news. Sadly the next letter he receives is a new report of the epidemic now dubbed as “the Great Plague” or “the Great Mortality”. The nicknames tell everything about the plague. By January 1275, it has reached even further to west. Rumours tell that even some Catalan cities have been taken over by its wrath. It is told that anyone the Great Mortality touches, it brutally kills. No matter how healthy the person, no matter how well-fed, no matter sex or age of the person, they will die if they contract the disease. The Welsh court is praying for the epidemic to not reach their realm. Enfidaig on the other hand is sure that the Channel between Albion and continent will keep the wicked plague out of his lands.

In June 1275 the Great Plague is told to have taken over the Welsh ruled province of Coruña in Iberia. This is the first time more accurate depiction of the disease arrives in Enfidaig’s hands. What witnesses say, the Great Plague comes in a form of tumours in people’s armpits and groins. These tumours can be anything between the size of an apple and an egg. After the initial arrival of the tumours, the disease takes a new shape. Tens if not hundreds spots, small and large, take over the body, before finally letting the diseased pass away and meet their maker.

Enfidaig’s worst nightmare comes true when in February 1276 the Great Mortality arrives in the capital of England, the county of Middlesex. Enfigaid sends all of his vassals a warning of the plague and he consults his Court Physician how to best avoid the illness. The doctor comes up with several ideas.

In July 1276, tens of innocent Anglo-Saxons flee the plague to the lands of Brythoniaid. After a little while, it is sadly noticed that many of these refugees have already contracted the evil illness. The much feared has happened. The Pale Rider has brought the plague to Welsh lands. Enfidaig’s starts doing exactly as his Court Physician tells him. He starts carrying a pouch full of sweet-scented herbs to anywhere he goes. It is believed that the gruesome disease spreads via air, more specific via miasma, and that different kinds of smells keep it away. Another trick Enfidaig’s doctor proposes is a rearrangement of Enfidaig’s life in the castle. Nobody shall be let in castle to make sure the disease doesn’t get in. Also, Enfidaig shall relocate his sleeping room to a chamber with at least two fireplaces. The smoke of the fire is also believed to keep the miasma away.

Something seems odd though… Even after half a year since the Great Plague arrives in Brythoniaid, it has done little bad in the county of Dyfed. Rest of the Albion and even Iwerddon have come under the wrath of the epidemic, but not Dyfed. Enfidaig believes this is due to the grand hospital complex of the capital, which makes sure the ill are secluded from the healthy. Most of the commoners believe this is a sign from God. Enfidaig is a heavenly man.

Notwithstanding Dyfed’s situation, the court of Enfidaig remains in seclusion. The castle starts to run out of food and thus the meals are heavily regulated. One day Enfidaig finds his kinswoman, lunatic lady called Gwenllian, in the food storage. She has eaten food worth of many meals! Despite that Enfidaig lets her stay in the castle. He is too kind to let his relative be banished. What if she died? That would be his fault.

In February 1277, Seven months after the initial arrival of the Great Plague, Dyfed finally starts to be loaded down by the number of sickly and deceased. Albion and Iwerddon have come under the total control of the Great Mortality. It is a sad year for the Welsh, one that will be remembered until the Day of Judgment.

The Welsh court continues with its rather wearisome life. The court cooks decide to start preparing food from the rats of the castle’s basement, which is surprisingly disliked by many. A courtier named Ffelis dislikes the taste of rats so much that she decides to secretly eat a rather large proportion of the remaining well-liked food. Unfortunately to her, her gluttony is found out. As Ffelis isn’t a member of Dinefwr family, Enfidaig doesn’t see himself as responsible for her. Due to this he simply banishes her from the castle.

Enfidaig and his caring wife Queen Beathoc become so bored with the life in seclusion that they decide to spend one night together in the charming light of the two fires. Couple of weeks later Beathoc tells her spouse that she’s with a child. Beathoc’s first child will be born at the worst possible time.

The hunger of two people Beathoc now possesses doesn’t help with the food shortage at all. In addition to it, courtiers are found time and time again secretly eating the small food storages of the castle. Enfidaig has become so hungry that he simply can’t withstand such behaviour. He banishes everyone that eats more than they are allowed, even his relative Gwenllian, who didn’t learn from her first time.

In September 1277, Beathoc gives birth to a child in the darkness of the night. The child is a girl and she is named Madrun. Poor little girl, she won’t be eating much or well during her years as infant. The food shortage has become an outright lack of eatable! Enfidaig has even considered cannibalism a couple of times, but he has quickly tried to forget such ideas. He’d rather pass away than commit something so terrible.

In the following November a Scottish courtier starts having symptoms of some disease. It isn’t certain if it is the Great Mortality, but she is banished nevertheless. Any kind of disease inside the castle would be catastrophic! Enfidaig can’t wait for the Great Plague to go away. Or maybe it won’t go away... Maybe it is a disaster send by God to punish all the unholy. But Enfidaig even has a nickname “the Holy”! Mayhap it holds no real value?

Enfidaig starts raving more and more as the weeks go by. He starts questioning even what is real. As January 1278 rolls around, Enfidaig isn’t even able to leave his bed, he’s in so poor condition. As the loud noises of flogging of the Flagellants echo to the resting chamber of Enfidaig, the Welsh King passes away in his sleep on 11th January 1278. Enfidaig was able to keep the Great Plague away from himself, but not the problems of hunger.

If this new king wasn't under the quarantine, then Wales might be about to go through a year of five kings...

Death is the ultimate leveller.

It is very sad to see him go. He did everything right, but in the end... there is an end.
