Hello everyone!

Today is Tuesday and that means it’s time for another fascinating Developer Diary. My name is Divine and I’ve been part of the Crusader Kings team since last autumn as a scripter and now I’m going to tell you about some of the events that we’ve been working on for the soon-to-be-released expansion, Horse Lords!

If you control a part of the Silk Road you can now build trade posts to make sure to get some of the riches that is traveling along the route. However, there might be more people who want a share of the wealth, so you’ll probably have to guard your treasure chests. There’s also a possibility to gain the help of a trade governor who might attract more traders and riches to your land... or his mishaps might prove to be more of a headache for you to cope with.

As mentioned in a previous dev diary, rulers on the Steppe can send out their sons and brothers to take up arms and become mercenaries. The life of a mercenary, though, is a harsh one and a lot of things can happen when you’re out adventuring in a foreign court; so we’ve added some events about various things that can occur for the captain of such a created mercenary band.

For instance, the Mercenary Captain, being on the field fighting for a living, has a chance to improve his military education trait to one of the stronger ones. These mercenaries also get a few events to interact with their employer or the ruler of the province they are hanging out in. One of these events is for instance eloping with a person of the employer’s court. It can be a daughter, son or a skilled courtier.

Since the Mercenary Captain is earning his keep from being hired he also gets some choices on what to spend it on. For example, improving his Band of Mercenaries or spend it all on women and vice.

A ruler of the Steppe was not much of a ruler unless his clan had a thriving herd of livestock to support them. Thus, it is only natural that we needed to have some events about horses! If you’re living on the Steppes as a nomad, you can now adopt a favorite war horse. There are some events associated with having a horse and what you do together with it - both ordinary and unusual happenings.

So that’s a little sneak peek of the things that can happen on the wide Steppes and everything I had to say for today. I hope you are all hyped for the upcoming expansion that is now just a week away!

Oh! And I might actually have heard legends about certain altaic families behaving in odd ways lately… with hideous faces and beast-like behavior.

Of course you say that now, but what about when the old lady gets your goat, the kids are butting heads, and you're in a BAA-AA-AAD mood?

To be fair about that fantasy, I always got the impression the loading screens are just meant to be the artwork made in the era, commissioned stuff... And Artists aren't exactly known for being 100% accurate and truthful.

But this looks more like Romanticism and not medieval art... ;)

"As I walked into the herd, one very special horse stood out. Yes, I knew that this was the chosen one. His majesty was astounding. I walked towards him, saddled up and whispered in his ear :
"You shall be named ... Glitterhoof".

I forgot to ask earlier, but what defines "most skilled"? Is it along the lines of the level needed to unlock extra options in events (usually 10), or is it higher? Also, is there a minimum skill floor, so if there is only a single unmarried woman at the court the merc captain is hired to, and she is unskilled, the event won't fire or he won't take her?

Also, if I'm in the middle of a war, and the event fires, will the mercs abandon me? Even if they are in the middle of a battle? And if they do leave, do I get some sort of refund at least? I'm imagining hiring some mercs, and a week later, they vanish with my daughter and my money, never having fought. And while that leads in to a great story, will that sort of thing at least hurt their prestige or make the AI less likely to hire them? If a merc captain has proven that he can't be trusted, who would risk hiring him?

I'd just like to say that the mercenary captain can only get married a limited amount of time (How many is it, like 1 wife and three concubines?), so just make sure that the merc captain you're hiring is fulled out on marriage before you hire him.

Also, I'd like an option to name my horse Buttstallion... Need I say more?

Aren't merc captains blocked from getting married? I thought that it was said that the character taken from your court would become the merc captain's lover.

So you're saying that tribal subjugation is still in the game? Why? It doesn't work at all it makes sure that every kingdom that can be founded is founded almost as soon as the game starts. Sometime even empires.

Tribal subjugation was designed for the 867 start and works quite well at accomplishing what it's meant to do for that start. Where it breaks down completely and results in utterly absurd results is the 769 start which never should have been done anyway.

Indeed , it doesnt need to be 100% acurrate thats why its called art because an artist should use his own imagination and give his own touch to the creation hes making unless of course he wants to obtain a 100% accurate fresque but then again i dont think this is the case here. Its more about a subiective opinion "I think it looks cooler if i depict things this way".

Made after the fact then by the Persian Jews of Italy, of course. In honor of their mighty Empire.
Fun fact: the oldest extant New Persian text was written by a Jewish livestock merchant in Turfan.

Damn, this dlc looks so good I may have to buy it before it comes on sale.
For a cheapskate skinflint like myself this is painful.

Anytime a DLC for EU IV or CK 2 comes out, I always say to myself that I will wait for a sale.

Then I always end up buying them at full price one minute after they come out.

At least it's inspired fantasy and looks cool. That event artwork just looks plain wrong. Why is the "Horse Lord" inside a castle? Why does the Chinese guy dress like a Manchu? Nothing makes sense. I think I would prefer the European version tbh.
That event is actually happening to a feudal character I think.

Yeah, all independent Nomad Clans are Empire-tier and have those horses around their COA. And historically Qocho was a refined Kingdom.
