Prologue: An Empire Falls

The Illithites' story begins a very long time ago. There one was a time when the Illithite Grand Empire stretched its nefarious tendrils across the entire Galaxy, its mighty fleet backed by Shroud-weavers bearing enormous psionic potential. System after system fell to their rule as enemy empires were crushed before them. But it was the Illithi's practice of biologically assimilating their conquered foes that led to their downfall - they had evolved from parasites, and their young needed a sentient host in order to develop past a tadpole stage. Horrified by this abominable practice, enemy nations set aside their differences and banded together against the Illithite fleets. In a series of decisive battles, the Illithites were driven back to their home system. There they made a final stand, in the shadow of an enormous Star Fortress so mighty that the combined forces of the enemy fleets could not hope to defeat it in direct battle. But the Illithites' treacherous foes found another way to destroy their hated enemy.

By setting off massive Hyperwaves in three different places just outside Illithite space at precisely the right distance from the Illithites' home star, the allied forces were able to detonate the sun itself, setting off a supernova. The Illithites' homeworld, Snamon, was flung into the depths of space, and all who lived upon it perished as they were first scorched by radiation from the supernova and then frozen solid as Snamon drifted further and further away from its star.

Millions of years passed as Snamon tumbled through the void, its surface covered in the frozen remnants of its atmosphere. No light shone upon the blasted planet for eons, aside from the faintest glimmer of distant stars. Eventually the planet's journey through the Galaxy came to a stop as Snamon was captured in the orbit of a black hole, doomed to slowly spiral inwards over billions of years until finally being devoured into the singularity at its core. Yet it was this very black hole which proved to be the Illithites' salvation.

Tidal forces from the singularity's immense gravitational pull re-heated Snamon's core, and geothermal vents spewed toxic gasses to the surface. Snamon's frozen atmosphere sublimated back into existence. Uncounted eons passed once more as the planet's atmosphere grew thicker and thicker. Finally, life sprang once more into this primordial soup. Millions more years passed as it evolved into complex (and often crab-like) forms. Finally, Snamon's fledgling life grasped for a semblance of intelligence with the rise of the Gizakyi, mantis-like creatures of significant strength but little sentience to speak of. Still, the Gizakyi's limited curiosity was enough to seal their fate, as eventually they discovered a sealed Illithite vault, the lone surviving artifact after millions of years of weathering. The Gizakyi managed to open the vault, and were infected with Illithite tadpoles.

The first Illithite hatchlings found themselves alone and confused. The psionic network their distant ancestors had created was long gone, though its faintest remnants echoed through the void as a scar on the Shroud, and awakened in them a longing for their higher purpose: to restore the Illithite to their dominant place in the Galaxy. Two thousand and two hundred of our years later, the first Illithite interstellar vessels had been built, and were ready to begin their renewed exploration of the Galaxy.

001Intro.png

The Illithite is roughly humanoid, tall but thin; they stand perhaps eight feet tall, but rarely weigh more than two hundred pounds. The top of their skull is thick and hardened, like a shell; below it are four eyes, a pair of breathing tubes, and a number of short but strong tentacles surrounding a beaked mouth. Their coloration varies from reds to blues to purples, with individuals of high status showing particularly vibrant hues. Their coloration can change throughout their long lives, if the need arises.

When they first reached interstellar flight, slightly more than two thousands years after they first returned, the Illithite society had devolved a great deal from its former glory. Many individuals were somewhat psionically gifted, and could sense the scar upon the very psyche of the Shroud their ancestors had left hundreds of millions of years beforehand. As they lacked the deeper understanding of the Universe that their precursors had, they began to worship this connection as a god. The black hole in their sky - with its majestic accretion disk halo - would be the centerpiece of this faith. They named it Shak-Cor - The Becoming God.

This faith is the very core of the entire Illithite society. Their leader, an absolute and unquestioned god-emperor, is a powerful psion (though at this time the Illithite did not yet understand this, they naturally gravitated towards psionically powerful beings in leadership roles from the start) and worshiped as Shak-Cor itself. The heir-apparent is known as Cor, the Becoming.

In the name of their dark god, the Illithite seek to conquer the Galaxy.

For now, they rely upon the labor of the Gizakyi. These beast-like creatures are only barely intelligent enough to serve as proper hosts to the Illithites. They greatly resemble our world's mantis shrimps, with massive eyes to see in the dim light cast by Shak-Cor's accretion disk, but they are huge, reaching up to a ton in weight. The Illithite are eager to find more worthy hosts - and more capable servants.

003-Planet.png

Snamon is a lonely world, cold and dark. It orbits a black hole in the southern quadrant of the Galaxy, and is dimly lit only by the light given off by the black hole's accretion disk.

Snamon is often bathed in radiation, and the tidal forces of the black hole Shak-Cor have generated intense geothermal activity in its belly. An entire ecosystem has sprung up around these sources of energy.

This ecosystem is by no means rich, however. Snamon is mostly lifeless, and thoroughly bleak. Yet somehow, life finds a way.

004-Snamon.png

Prime Minister Jeltesh the Brute is the squid-woman responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the humble world. The colorful Gizakyi have to be carefully managed if they are to complete the tasks that the Illithites require successfully and efficiently. Her savage epithet, a relic of a bygone age when Illithites clans following different interpretations of the Divine Guidance and pledging loyalty to different emperors savagely fought one another beneath dark sulfurous clouds. Now it is mostly ironic - Jeltesh is most brutal when she effectively manages the planet's sprawling bureaucracy.

She is the second most powerful squid-person in the Empire of Shak-Cor - second only to the great god-emperor, the corporeal manifestation of Shak-Cor itself - J'klang the Striker.

002-Striker.png

Years before he came to power, the young Cor had visited an orbital observatory with a powerful telescope used to study exoplanets - the worlds orbiting the neighboring stars. The scientists in charge of the observatory managed to use the black hole's gravitational lensing to greatly increase the range of their telescopes, allowing clear observations of the neighboring star's planets. The astronomers were stunned to discover a massive planet in the star's habitable zone which seemed to have liquid water on its surface. The young J'klang even claimed to have spotted some sort of structures on the planet's surface.

At that moment, J'klang declared that under his rule, interstellar flight would be achieved and earned his epithet - the Striker. Now, four years into his rule, his pledge was about to come true.

007-Neighbor.png

005-Nearby.png

This wasn't J'klang's only scientific initiative. His realm's top three scientists were each put in charge of one Research Ministry and given a different mandate.

Nithkur the Marauder, so named for his tentative grasp of the intricate Illithite social norms, was put in charge of the Ministry of Physics. His first order of business was to upgrade the Ministry's particle accelerators to account for new quantum experiments which were proposed following the discovery of the Hyperlanes. The hope was that this would lead to opportunities that Nithkur could not even imagine yet.

Geldeia the Fiend, named for his gruesome biological experiments, was put in charge of the Ministry of Society. His pet project was the complete mapping of both the Illithite and Gizakyi genomes - a tall order, as the two species evolved entirely separately from completely different abiogenesis events. Still, completion of this project would bring the Illithites one step closer towards fixing the Gizakyi's many flaws.

Narnool the Gruesome, named for his DIY prosthetic arm, was put in charge of the Engineering department. His arm wasn't very attractive, but it worked well - exactly the sort of engineering the Illithites valued, outside of their temples. He set about rebuilding his research facility, bringing it up to his very exacting specifications, which he claimed would greatly speed up subsequent work. The long-lived Illithites always tend to view the bigger picture.

Will the Illithites ever learn the secrets of their origin? Will they reclaim their place in the galaxy? Or will they be defeated and destroyed by their enemies? Find out next time!

On the one hand, they're the protagonists. On the other hand, their rule would be a terrible thing for all others.

So kind of an interesting point - given the lore, when I generated features for Gulli's Planet Modifiers, I decided to go with an "old" galaxy. The lore behind these guys implies galactic empires could have risen and fell many times over while they were in transit to their new home, so it makes sense for there to be a lot of ruins. And, DANG - there really are LOTS of ruins. This will be an interesting and fast paced game.

Well I for one love ancient Galaxies filled with the ruins and wrecks of those who came before. The storytelling possibilities are limitless.

Lovely! Looking forward to following this. :) Same premise with necroids like my AAR, but a totally different approach. :)

Chapter 1: The Kraken Stirs
Chapter 1: The Kraken Stirs

When Shak-Cor J'klang the Striker ascended to the Black Throne, the Illithite empire was still relatively young. Its foundation myth, though not precisely true, is nontheless quite dramatic and deserves retelling here.

Six hundred years before then, The First Shak-Cor[1] had united the disparate clans of the Illithites under one banner after a gruesome ceremony where he defeated each of two dozen challengers it ritual combat. His vanquished foes were the proud leaders of each of the Illithite's grandest tribes, and one by one the mighty leaders fell limp in his tentacled grasp. When his last foe fell, The First Shak-Cor's priests removed the bodies, and returned a short time later dragging an enormous cauldron before them. Each challenger, as well as The First Shak-Cor himself, had produced one parasitic young.[2] The priests produced the extracted brains of the vanquished rivals and ceremoniously inserted them into the cauldron, which was filled with an acidic substance. As the brains dissolved into the viscous fluid that was foaming in the cauldron, the parasites were all tossed in at once. The tadpole-like creatures revealed distinctly non-tadpole-like teeth as they fought and devoured each other, until only one remained - The First Shak-Cor's young, of course.

The story claims that six months later, the tadpole had grown into a massive brain-like growth, with a ferocious beak hidden beneath grasping tentacles that erupt from its stem. Whether this is the true origin of the Elders' Brain, the Illithite's grand palace does contain, in a water-filled chamber deep below the ground, a grotesque living brain of massive proportions. The Illithites claim that upon their death, their Emperors are fed to this brain, which is as old as the Empire itself; and that by communing with this brain, their current Shak-Cor can commune with Emperors past, and access their wisdom. One riddle even the Elder Brain couldn't solve, of course, was the origin of the Illithite themselves. For this reason, the Empire of Shak-Cor always had its eye upon those distant stars.

Whether this tale is indeed true or not, the Illithite had certainly progressed quickly under the rule of their mighty Emperors, and within six hundred years had gone from warring tribes to the brink of interstellar travel. This was to be J'klang's first grand project as Emperor, and The Striker was eager to prove himself.

001-Explore.png

In the year 2,200 by the Illithite's reckoning, the survey ship Frightful, helmed by Suishor the Hateful[3] made the first interstellar jump in the Illithite's new history, heading for the Delta Eridani system. It was here that a young J'klang thought he had spotted artificial constructions on the surface of a massive planet; but what Suishor would discover would shake Snamon to the core.

As the Frightful entered the system, it was buffeted by debris of clearly artificial origin. Whatever this once was, it had been thoroughly destroyed. Still, it confirmed what J'klang had suspected: there was life elsewhere in the Galaxy.

003-Scanning-Debris.png

The world itself, while enormous, was ill-suited for the Illithite physique. It was home to dense jungles and dangerous wildlife, things that were extremely alien to the Illithite on their blasted, frozen, dark world. Still, discussions in the Emperor's inner circle began to propose colonization efforts, making use of Gizakyi colonists who could be exposed to the harsh conditions. These plans would soon be put on hold for an even more promising opportunity.

Before the end of that first year, a second Imperial Survey Vessel was built and sent off to the Galactic south, to the star system Alkurah. This ship was helmed by Suitesh the Freak, and dubbed The Lookout. Suitesh and Suishor soon developed a bit of a rivalry as each relayed more exciting news back to the homeworld.

Suishor made the first great discovery while Suitesh was in interstellar transit, dulling the excitement surrounding his arrival in the Alkurah system. The source of all of the space junk was soon discovered - on the third world in the Delta Eridani system, a massive research complex of exceedingly complex design was discovered. The planet was inhabited untold eons ago, and some dark whisper echoing across the Shroud had somehow embedded in the Illithites the certainty that knowledge of their origin would require them to delve into the most distant past. The Inner Council unanimously agreed that the Delta Eridani system must be brought under Imperial control immediately. Jeltesh the Brute immediately instituted a number of policies under Imperial authority to facilitate this expansion.

Yet even as the Illithite construction ships made their way to the Delta Eridani system to claim it for the Empire, exciting news came from Alkurah that spurred development in that direction instead. On a cold, wet planet - one where the Illithites would find themselves much more comfortable than on any world in the Eridani system - a civilized race was discovered, a people calling themselves the Gatod.

Civilized is perhaps a generous term for these creatures - they have only recently adopted iron tools, and seem to be developing far more slowly than the Illithites did - but they are certainly higher life form than the primitive and brutish Gizakyi. Immediately, the orders were given. Gizakyi regiments would be drafted and trained for the invasion, and Alkurah would be the next system to be claimed.

While Suishor was ordered to continue her survey of distant systems and leave a detailed excavation of the precursor ruins (which were estimated to potentially take years or decades to fully complete) to account for any immediate threats, Suitesh was granted leave to study the exotic plant life on the Gatod's planet, to prepare for the imminent invasion.

Seeking to encourage the developing rivalry and exploit to for increased productivity in scientific development, the Emperor decreed that scientists would be granted land and political power over future conquests and colonies in proportion to the level of their contribution to Illithite society. The Illithite political system below the Imperial level was, in many ways, quite feudal, and so land and political power were exactly what an Illithite seeking to join the ranks of the aristocracy would desire. This worked beautifully, and encouraged scientists and researchers to redouble their efforts.

This included Suishor, who soon after this decree announced that she had recovered artifacts from an ancient empire, called the Irassian Concordant. This ancient empire succumbed to some sort of disease, and were exceedingly ancient - far older than renewed life on Snamon, noted the Inner Council, and therefore potentially related to the Illithite's origins.

012-Discovery.png

013-Irassian.png

More and more evidence was mounting that spaceborne alien civilizations were not uncommon, and the Empire needed to settle on first contact protocols. A science ship two hyperlane jumps away couldn't expect an answer about how to interact with alien contacts for multiple days, so decisions needed to be made in advance.

Some in the Inner Council argued for forceful and aggressive contact with any alien civilization, but others - including the Emperor itself - argued that this would be foolish. An empire on the scale of those who left behind the ruins that Suishor was now discovering would swat the Illithites aside like a bug. Caution would need to be maintained.

Meanwhile, the Empire's pair of Imperial Survey Vessels would continue exploring further and further away from home. A third ship would be added as soon as possible, and eventually a fourth would survey the worlds closer in that the first wave of ships missed.

Also around this time, the Emperor's heir - Cor Jelash - first rose to prominence as he took his place as next in line. He would attend all future Inner Council meetings, though he wouldn't take a prominent role at those meetings for some time.

[1] The First Shak-Cor's name has been lost to history - intentionally, as the Illithite believe that none alive today are worthy of even holding his name in their minds

[2] Both male and female Illithites can produce parasitic young, in addition to a more standard method of reproduction (which they are particularly slow at, taking decades to raise a single child, and very rarely choose to do).

[3] Can you guess why she was chosen to lead an expedition very far away from home?

Chapter 2: An Age of Discovery
Chapter 2: An Age of Discovery

The top Imperial prerogative for the coming year was set by the Inner Council as the second year of J'klang's rule came to an end. With more and more habitable worlds being discovered, the order was given to survey as many of them as possible, as quickly as possible. The Shak-Cor was determined to stretch his influence as far as possible as quickly as possible, just in case there were any still-living aliens left in the Galaxy. Detailed inspection of the ruins which had already come under Illithite rule would have to wait.

Suishor the Hateful would soon discover another ancient ruined world in the same system as the Irassian artifacts were found. Though it was impossible to tell whether this fortress was built by the same ancient race without a more detailed excavation, its presence served as a warning to the Inner Council: these ancients possessed all this power - and yet, they are dust. The Illithites must not suffer that same fate.

Inspired by the discovery, the crews of the Frightful and the Lookout redoubled their efforts.

Early in the third year of J'klang's reign, the First Neutralizer Legion - led by a grizzled warrior named Ygzid the Ruthless - made planetfall on the primitives' world of Gatod. Ygzid lived up to his name, and unleashed armed and deadly Gizakyi on the nearly defenseless armies of the Gatod. Their pikes and chariots fell in droves to the Illithite offense, and the planet was conquered within a few short days of fighting.

The Gatod did not take well to their new lot - they did not seem to fully comprehend the power of the civilization which had just conquered them, and even the simplest industrial tasks were utterly alien to them. Still, they showed more promise then the Gizakyi, and Geldeia the Fiend of the Ministry of Society assured the Inner Council that once pacified they would make for effective hosts for Illithite reproduction.

A few cycles later, as the Frightful made its way further to the Galactic West and surveyed the Hermes station, first contact was finally made with an interstellar being. A few weeks into the Frightful's survey of the system, a pack of strange interstellar vessels appeared out of hyperspace.

Hermes was of particular interest, as it possessed at least two potentially habitable worlds. As such, determining the identity and intent of these strange creatures became the Empire's top priority. Luckily, the Ministry of Society had been preparing for just this sort of eventuality. The elite Illithites they trained for this task would come to be known as Envoys, but this term undersells their role. These were highly trained xenobiologists, psychologists, linguists, and diplomats. Each one led a team of two dozen or so experts in a tightly knit task force designed to accurately and efficiently communicate the Emperor's will to any xeno species.

D'amon the Draconian was one such envoy, and his team was assigned to the task of identifying these creatures, which were identified as the Beta Menace.

010.png

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Engineering commissioned a third science ship - The Patroller - and sent it to the Galactic North, towards the last unexplored area surrounding the Illithite home system. Once more, news of a science ship's arrival in a new system were overshadowed by a major discovery made by the previous science ship. This time, Suitesh the Freak had made the astounding discovery - a planet very different from Snamon, one overflowing with life - all of which gave off its own light. And on the planet, scans showed signs of strange eggs...

Undeterred by the hostile environment, the Inner Council decreed that additional resources would be spent on the implementation of colonization efforts. After all, it would be disposable Gizakyi and Gatod who would shoulder the burden of taming these planets, not valuable Illithites. The Council noted that more colonists might be required from the start than expected, to handle the hostile conditions.

012-Bio-Lum-Eggs.png

013-Col2203-May.png

As 2203 drew to a close, D'amon's research had yet to pay off. Strangely, no communications could be sensed from the ships, which showed up on the science vessel's sensors as warm blobs.

Back on Snamon, the Ministry of Society was having better luck with their own research. They completed their genome mapping projects, and were even able to map the Gatod's genome as well. Geldeia then set about implementing incremental improvements across the board using these new techniques, improving his department's efficiency.

As Suishor continued onwards past the Hermes system, she arrived at the first new black hole that the Empire had discovered - a place they dubbed Intix. A massive and heavily armed station, apparently still inhabited, floated in the black hole's orbit; but no other ships could be sensed anywhere nearby. It appeared that this station was some sort of independent entity; the Ministry of Society's second envoy team, led by Jelamon the Heartless, was sent to make contact.

New orders were issued to The Frightful - the black hole system was surrounded by a web of hyperlanes, and Suishor was to explore the web's perimeter. If all went well, the Empire would claim all the systems it contained.

Meanwhile, strange news arrived from the planet Gatod. Some of the natives had simply.... disappeared.

This empire was defeated once. But the Galaxy is still its property by right.

Let us watch these beings rise.

Besides, evil empires are more interesting than good ones, anyway.

I have quite a bit more played, but I haven't had the narrative writing spirit lately. I've been itching to play this empire though so I won't be too long.
Lovely! :D

Chapter 3: Hints of the Past
Chapter 3: Hints of the Past

Far to the Galactic East, the scientist known as Suitesh the Freak made yet another astounding discovery. It was only the end of the third year since the Illithites had mastered the hyperlanes, and now yet another planet bearing signs of Irassian activity had been discovered by Illithite ships. It seemed that this part of the Galaxy had been positively crawling with them in eons past, and that they suddenly and catastrophically disappeared across their range - no mean feat, for an interstellar civilization. The wisest of the Illithite scholars (and the Elder Brain itself, or so it was rumored) had begun to seriously discuss the possibility that these Irassians were somehow linked to the precursors of the modern Illithites, who had certainly not evolved as a natural part of the Snamonian ecosystem. Still, a serious study of these ruins would take years - time which the Empire of Shak-Cor simply could not spare. The reaches of space must be mapped, so that the Empire can claim those territories which would be necessary to unravel the secrets of the Illithite's origin. Suitesh was ordered onwards, for now; but so it was that the Empire began to stretch to the East.

001-Dec2203.png

Early the next year, D'amon the Draconian's team announced a breakthrough with their research into the Beta Menace. The Tiyanki, as they would come to be known, were gigantic space-borne creatures who had an apparently natural affinity for the Hyperlanes and travelled from gas giant to gas giant, feeding on their upper atmospheres. D'amon's report concluded that these creatures could not possibly have evolved naturally, and presented a report regarding the strange affinity between the ideal Illithite aesthetic, and the appearance of the Tiyanki. D'amon proposed that these creatures were originally created by an advanced Illithite precursor race as weapons of war, and had evolved into a more sedentary state after the disappearance of the Illithites.

002-Tiyanki.png

Trouble brewed on the planet Gatod, where the subdued populace adopted a stance of resigned pacifism in the face of Illithite propaganda. At first, the Illithites resented this failure of their propaganda team, but soon realized that, overall, this actually made the native Yldar easier to manage.

003.png

Meanwhile, in the Galactic West, Suishor the Hateful made another major discovery - rare and exotic compounds produced on a molten world by the toughest of extremophiles, in quantities significant enough to put to industrial use.

It is worth noting a few things about Illithite society at this time in order to understand why this relatively minor discovery had such a large impact on Illithite society. The Illithite Emperor was always born for the job, created from a tadpole birthed by the Elder Brain itself. But all other positions operated on strict merit, and even the coveted head positions of the Research Ministries were always up for grabs. Further, the entire Illithite society worked to serve the Emperor - there were no private industries. This meant everything in Illithite society was interconnected. Even though there were no industries that could use these exotic gasses, and in fact no known way to safely extract them, there were certain researchers whose private side projects showed the potential for these sorts of molecules. Hoping to secure the Emperor's favor for their research, they collaborated with Suishor - who was eager for her own discovery to be hailed for its importance - to lobby the Council of the Emperor and convince those who had the Shak-Cor's sensory organs of the importance of this discovery to the Empire's security. And so it was that the Empire began to stretch to the West.

005.png

In late 2204 as the other science ships headed further and further away from the Empire, the meticulous scientist Nithnool the Ravager was sent out aboard the Repugnance to explore some of the systems closer to home and identify potential future opportunities.

008-Aug2204.png

009.png

As Nithkur's Ministry of Physics completed their instrument calibration to account for the discovery of new quantum phenomena, Nithkur ordered these newly developed theories to be applied to the Empire's power generator grid. Success in this area, he hoped, would allow all reactors to operate at greatly increased efficiency.

Narnool the Gruesome's Ministry of Engineering, meanwhile, completed a similar laboratory revamp, allowing the fabrication of smaller and smaller nanomechanical parts at laboratories across the Empire's worlds. Next, Narnool turned his attention towards space, tackling more advanced designs for spaceborne mining facilities.

011.png

013.png

In a worrying display of intelligence, spacefaring beings inhabiting a large, seemingly advanced station in orbit of the black hole Intix would begin to beam signals at Imperial ships, even across the Hyperlanes. Jelamon the Heartless was placed in change of establishing real communication, but their team ran into setback after setback while studying this 'Gamma Menace'. Several key assumptions about the nature of intelligent communication had to be set aside, and when visual transmissions were first decoded and displayed, Jelamon was stunned to discover that these were hideous, insect-like beings - reminiscent of the lowly Gizakyi yet apparently far more intelligent.

007.png

010.png

020.png

Although they didn't appear to be expansionist, laying no claim to any space beyond their station itself - not even the space around Intix - the Council was determined to quickly expand in that direction and fortify their border, and so a construction ship was soon sent to Alpha Cephei, site of the Precursor fortress.

Eager to make use of any other opportunities they could, the Emperor soon commissioned another scientific vessel, the Eradicator, helmed by Suitrel the Ravening. Once more, they would be sent to explore the nearer space that earlier ships had skipped over.

System after system was falling into the Empire's grasp, and soon Illithites would be called upon to leave their relatively comfortable lives and head to frontier worlds to settle, alone, with few Xeno servants. The Emperor would embark on a campaign of nationalistic vigor, hoping to stoke the populace into action.

This is a really interesting premise and I'm looking forward to seeing how things evolve!
The primitives drew a very short stick in their galactic placement but they won't be concerned with their condition for long.
I wonder if any of the other spacefaring empires have memories of the Illithites even after so many eons.

An interesting start. The galaxy belongs to those that once owned it, the only question is, are they remembered by those they once fought?

Ah yes, that's totally not scary at all. Those xenos are definitely not up to something...

The Illithites seem to be very vain.

They attempt to connect everything they encounter to their past glory.
