a live Prix base? woot! exciting!

Yeah... unfortunately, it will be exciting in slow motion. Our Troop Transports are just now returning to Earth from dropping off some Engineers on Remagen to help them assemble a PDC base. The Troop Transports need to get back to Sol, refuel, link up with the Drop Ships, load up some troops, and then get out here to 82 Eridani. That will take a while.

Exciting! The Marines see action!

Just had a pretty nasty crash.. so nasty, in fact, that it crashed Paint as well (???). Seems to be working OK now, though.

Wow, amazing.

While waiting for the Wreckers and ground troops to arrive, I've been working on a possible design for the Star-II => Star-III conversion. The intention is to down-grade the Destroyers to Destroyer-Escorts, whose job will be to protect the fleet against Fighters and FACs, currently a window of vulnerability in our fleet's defenses.

It involves some pretty extensive changes. Hauling out the jump drive completely, replacing the size-4 tubes with size-6, totally replacing the sensors and fire controls with anti-FTR and anti-FAC equipment, greatly enlarging the magazines...

Here is my first cut at it:

Star III class Destroyer Escort 8,000 tons 825 Crew 2079.8 BP TCS 160 TH 440 EM 450
5500 km/s Armour 4-35 Shields 15-250 Sensors 1/1/0/0 Damage Control Rating 6 PPV 30
Annual Failure Rate: 85% IFR: 1.2% Maint Capacity 975 MSP Max Repair 294 MSP Est Time: 2.3 Years

Magneto-plasma Drive E8.4 (10) Power 88 Fuel Use 84% Signature 44 Armour 0 Exp 10%
Fuel Capacity 360,000 Litres Range 96.4 billion km (202 days at full power)
Delta R250/17.5 Shields (6) Total Fuel Cost 105 Litres per day

CIWS-200 (1x6) Range 1000 km TS: 20000 km/s ROF 5 Base 50% To Hit
Size 6 Missile Launcher (4) Missile Size 6 Rate of Fire 45
Size 1 Missile Launcher (6) Missile Size 1 Rate of Fire 10
Missile PD Fire Control 2046 FC14-R1 (70%) (2) Range 14.8m km Resolution 1
Missile anti-FTR Fire Control 2049 FC55-R4 (50%) (2) Range 55.4m km Resolution 4
Size 6e 2043 ASM (32) Speed: 30,700 km/s End: 23.3m Range: 42.9m km WH: 9 Size: 6 TH: 204 / 122 / 61
Size 1e 2043 AMM (62) Speed: 48,200 km/s End: 3.5m Range: 10.3m km WH: 1 Size: 1 TH: 305 / 183 / 91

Active anti-FTR Search Sensor 2049 MR43-R4 (50%) (1) GPS 784 Range 43.1m km Resolution 4

ECCM-2 (2) Missile to hit chances are vs targets moving at 3000 km/s, 5000 km/s and 10,000 km/s

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

Lots of changes. Armor thickness quadrupled, from one to four. Speed increased by 1500 kps. Fuel capacity doubled, and magazine storage nearly doubled. A high-res search sensor that can paint 200-ton Fighters and FACs all the way out to the maximum engagement range of our missiles. Fire controls to match that, and two FCs instead of one for engaging multiple small-craft. ECCM for both of them. CIWS. Improved shields.

Comments?

I'm thinking of dumping the ECCM and just using over-sized FCs instead.

what ship am I in command again? I meant to remember it being the cor caroli, but now I am unsure

The ESN Cor Caroli is a Star-II class Destroyer (soon to be converted to a Star-III class Destroyer Escort). You are commanding an Attitude-II class Light Cruiser, the ESN Totally Pissed Off.

A second enemy "Population"... probably a ground unit or installation... has been detected in the 82 Eridani system by our survey scouts. This one is on the fourth moon of the sixth planet.

I am very curious on what this might be.. an actual living Prix "outpost" is something very interesting.

Perhaps we can take them prisoner and interrogate them!... the game allows that with living opponents, but perhaps not with robots. How would you coerce one? Withhold his oil-can?

Tell 'em paradoxes. That will show them!

The Geo-survey of the 82 Eridani system is about 80% complete. No ruins located yet. No really spectacular mineral finds except for that exceptional Sorium Gas Giant. Lots of minor finds, though... at least some minor minerals have been found on planets I, II, III, V, VI, VIII, IX and seven moons. This system could certainly support a group of colonies on its three Mars-like planets... especially after our Geology team gives the place a good working over. Pity about the lack of Archeological sites, though.

A THIRD Prix "Population" has been found in the 82 Eridani system... they're all OVER the place! This one is on the second moon of the eleventh planet.

Nearly one thousand of the Xeno-Archeological sites on El Dorado have been exploited... only seven hundred and eighty-five remain.

I haven't gotten far enough in my game to mess around with ECM/ECCM so this may be a dumb question: how likely are fighters/FAC to have ECM? If our intended targets don't have ECM, we don't need ECCM right?

There is a "Small Ship ECM" tech branch. On the other hand, all ECM does is reduce your Fire control lock-on range... so it's probably cheaper in tonnage to just install over-sized Fire Controls rather than ECCM. I think I'll make that change to the design.

Salvage operations have started in the 82 Eridani system... and have already struck pay-dirt. Dismantling the first Qara wreck (of three) has given us 3120 tech points towards Tokamak Fusion Reactors, and has also yielded two Magnetic Confinement Fusion Reactors and one Magnetic Confinement Fusion Drive, for disassembly on Earth.

Unless of course there is a shortage of Uridium, which always seems to happen in my games.

I assume the savings will be returned to me in the form of increased hazard pay. :D

With Moria in full operation, I think it will be a few decades before I start running short of anything.
