I know that feeling of having to research techs ahead of time! But I'm happy rather than annoyed because that means that I'm being ahead of everyone else in the techs that matter!

Also, I know the feeling of slogging through boring years! Nothing like a US game to feel that...

I think I found out what happened with those divisons. After I loaded the save to start this part I found that I had a several naval vessels in the redeployment pool, probably because I didn't pull them out of port before switching all those provinces to Nat. Spain. Originally I didn't pay too much attention to it and just dumped them into one of my other fleets.

Checking now though, I discovered that two TPs were among the various ships there. I guess that means that for some reason when they redeployed, the divisons they were carrying simply vanished. :(

I don't want to have to go back and sit through that whole boring year again, so I guess I'll just live with it, unless there is something I can do to spawn new divisions...Actually I might just look into that, it gives me an idea for something in the next update.

Sorry this took a while, but sitting through so long without anything happening get boring. This part covers a year and a half, but at least it is a far more interesting year and a half than before. Comments in brackets are OOC.

An Empire Like No Other

Part Four:

It was January 2nd before I finally was able to get out of bed, all thanks to Il Duce. It doesn’t matter though, it was fun…or at least what I can remember was fun. We managed to find our great leaders latest prophecies a few days later, but it would be impolite to mention where we had found them.

ita19hn5.jpg

It seems to be suggesting that we become friendly with Adolf Hitler, the leader of Germany, and that also he will get fatter somehow…

Following this, we order our diplomats to improve relations, which they do, allowing us to be guaranteed an alliance with the northern fascists whenever we want one. However, our great leader decides against an alliance at the moment for some reason.

In early February, our Head of Intelligence is almost executed as a result of four failed attempts in a row to plant a spy in the UK. Luckily for him, his agents pull off a massive success at the last minute and he is saved. There are no longer any foreign agents operating in our great country!

ita20jh3.jpg

Il Duce celebrate in the usual way…I’m sure you can guess it by now, so I won’t bother saying it. Anyway, the next couple of months pass by boringly, but then, at the beginning of April…

ita21nx3.jpg

Hitler marches his troops into Austria and declares ‘Anschluss’. Austria is now part of the 3rd Reich and we have Germany on our border. I guess it’s a good thing we’re friends then! Later that month our first D’Oro-Class DDs are finished. They are nowhere near as mighty as our BBs, but they provide more than adequate escort for them.

May, June, July and August all pass without anything remotely interesting happening. September looked boring at first as well, but then on the 30th Germany successfully demanded the Sudetenland from the Czechs, leaving their country even thinner and stupider looking than it was before.

ita22rh6.jpg

Germany is getting fatter!

Nothing happens in October, but in November a fourth and final Interceptor squadron is complete. Once our researchers have developed a better type of Infantry we will begin a massive armament project to help us deal with the coming turbulent times. And so, just a few days before Christmas huge recruitment and training program gets underway.

ita23fy0.jpg

So as 1938 draws to a close, we see the situation in Europe becoming ever tenser as Germany swallows up more and more land. Il Duce made sure to tell us to take full advantage of any situation before he dashed off to his annual party. Good advice, seeing as we’ll be running the country for the next few days while he sleeps.

January is pretty boring, the only fun coming from repeatedly hunting down and eliminating enemy spies. Nothing much happens in February. However, in March…

(Okay, for some reason I forgot to save the pic. Basically the Czechs get annexed)

Germany swallows up another country, this time creating a puppet state along with it. It makes one wonder how much longer the Allies will tolerate this.

Later that month our first 1939 style divisions are completed. If only our industry had the capacity to upgrade our whole army…A few days later Lithuania cedes Memel to Germany. Silly Lithuanians, cutting off their own access to the sea like that. Inspired by these events, Il Duce sends an ultimatum to Albania to surrender or else. King Zog refuses, so we punish him by declaring war. In the midst of all this Poland signs up to the Allies, in an attempt to stop Germany pushing against them.

Albania foolishly has no military, so just a few days after the declaration of war…

ita24hm8.jpg

The Allies pay little attention to this, as they are far more concerned about Germany.

The only interesting thing to happen in April is Germany influencing us to make our army more ‘Standing’, whatever that means. May has nothing interesting whatsoever happen, and the same goes for June. July was looking boring too, but then suddenly, having spent the last year and a half attempting, we finally steal another blueprint from the UK. This one is for…Semi-Motorised Cavalry Division…****!

(I hate it when that happens, especially after spending so much money trying to steal techs. It could be worse though; in the Japan game I’m running simultaneously with this my spies in the US keep stealing tech off of the US Land Doctrine tree, which I will never use.)

On August 24th the Germans and Soviets make some kind of deal. Il Duce is naturally furious, seeing one of his greatest allies siding with the communists of all people. However, Adolf takes him to one side and whispers something to him. When he came back, our great leader was appeased. I wonder what the Germans promised him?

Just a few days later, this happens…

Look! *points up* I’ve slightly changed the format of my tech list to make it easier on your eyes. Only thing to comment on is my overestimation of Italy’s ability to upgrade and build what I wanted at the same time. At this point I expected to be upgrading my old divisions (I still have some 1918 ones knocking around), but as it stands all my spare IC is going into CG (to get rid of dissent after Albania) and supplies. Hopefully once my war starts that will change.

That Mussolini... Always drunkenly scrawling out odd future predictions...

I know what Hitler told Musse! "Musse in a few years from now I will declare war on ze Soviets and invade them in a plan called, well I haven't figured out what to call it yet, but it has somthing to do with me kicking in a door!" :p

Sybot, that semi-motorized cavalry is a key step towards motorized infantry. Thats a very good tech to steal. Don't be so hasty to not get motorized, even if it takes time to get. Great AAR by the way. Keep up the drunken pictures up as well. They are so funny.

Loving the AAR, Sybot! Funny and good. I hope this one fares better than Italy AARs so often seem to...

Sorry this took so long:
Exam Results Week + Japan game running concurrently + other writing commitments = takes a long time to get round to writing this

This section is where things finally get interesting, although nothing really ahistorical happens. Nonetheless, it’s better than months of sleeping with nothing to do. Comment in brackets…you get the idea by now.

An Empire Like No Other

Part Five:

Europe is descending into war and all our great leader can think about is having a party? It doesn’t matter, as it means we get to look at some more of his glorious premonitions.

ita26gm3.jpg

From what we can make out, it seems that our time is almost at hand. Excellent! Soon the Allies will be crushed!

As September begins, our agents report massive bombardments along the Maginot Line as German and Allied forces duke it out. The biggest question is how the German’s planned to break through such a heavily defended position. We can also see large fleets of Allied ships on the move the Mediterranean. I guess they’re heading to the North Sea to fight. It will make our job easier at least.

ita28ac0.jpg

By September 24th, Warsaw has fallen and the any hope the Poles had of surviving this war are gone.

ita29em5.jpg

In a surprise move the following day, Soviet troops march into Poland and secure the eastern regions of the country. I guess this was part of the agreement signed last month, as much as I dislike the idea of cooperating with communists. A few days later the Germans hand over the regions that they took that were claimed by the Soviets.

On October 1st an incident happens involving the Norwegians, prompting Hitler to begin plans for invasion. I guess he thinks that the Western Allies will be too tough, what with the massive defences on the French border and stuff. Meanwhile we spot German bombers attacking Allied shipping in the Mediterranean. It’s a bit odd, as they don’t have an airbase in range. Maybe they’ve developed super-long-range bombers! (yes, I know the AI has unlimited range)

On October 3rd our latest Littorio-Class ships are finished, the RM Roma and RM Impero. Fitting names, even if a new Roman Empire isn’t exactly what Il Duce has in mind. As the war in Europe drags on, we decide to check out our strategy for Ethiopia.

ita30zl8.jpg

We appear to have nowhere near the troop numbers needed to hold the region, so it is decided that all forces will be withdrawn and added to the main offensive in Egypt, where they will be able to be far more useful. Very strangely, in early November Japanese ships are spotted off the coast of Sicily. What the hell are they doing here?!

ita31aa9.jpg

On November 15th war breaks out between Finland and the Soviet Union as the latter continue to expand their sphere of influence. On the 18th we manage to steal Early Marine Division from the British. This could be useful later.

Absolutely nothing interesting happens for the rest of the year, which is odd considering there are two major wars going on. Il Duce once again spent the night partying. Luckily I was on hand to record his wishes. HE spent most of the time dancing, saying the army should stand up and boogie on down with him. I took that to mean he wanted the army to be more standing than drafted, and we made the necessary adjustments.

The rest of January was pretty boring. The Soviets made two gains in Finland and the Germans made no gains whatsoever. I fail to see how attacking the Allies will help when even Germany is struggling against them. February was looking to be pretty much the same until…

ita32oq7.jpg

The Finns give in to Soviet demands after just over three months of fighting. However comparing this with the German invasion of Poland which was over in less than a month, we can see how ineffectual the Soviets seem to be taking on such a minor power. This bodes well for the future.

ita33tq7.jpg

On March 27th Hitler finally makes good his promise from the Altmark Incident and declares war on Denmark and Norway. This shouldn’t take long, even though they have joined the Allies. Denmark takes just 5 days to surrender. Is that a new record? Germany seems to be holding back as nothing happens in April, but we manage to start May off with a bang by knocking out Alan Turing’s Advanced Computer prototype in the UK, setting back his research a lot.

Shortly after this, Germany begins the invasion of Norway, landing a force at Bergen. Took them long enough. Then, almost straight that…

ita34re0.jpg

Germany declares war on the Low Countries. Of course! Why go through the Maginot Line, when you can just go around. What a genius Hitler is. By May 14th most of the Low Countries are occupied and Luxembourg has been annexed.

ita35gs0.jpg

A few days later the Dutch capitulate and the Belgians follow suit a few days after that. Now Germany begins its push into France, who was completely unprepared for such a bold move.

On May 19th the Soviet expand further and absorb Lithuania. Norway is annexed in the 21st. Things are definitely becoming exciting now. In China the Nationalists annex the Communists despite the Commies still holding some of their key territory. Still, we’re not complaining. On June 2nd we steal Improved Oil Refining from the British.

On June 10th German forces march into Paris. Il Duce sent a letter of congratulations to Hitler for achieving in just over a month of offensives what his predecessors failed to do in four years. On the 12th the Soviets declare war on Estonia, but before anything can happen the Estonians hand over their territory and surrender, leaving Latvia alone against the Bear. On the 20th the Maginot Line is outflanked. Troops can now start pouring in from southern Germany. It looks like France won’t last much longer.

Just 5 days later, with German troops storming unopposed through the French countryside, they capitulate and Germany sets up a puppet government. Il Duce immediately contacts Hitler. With our northern border secure thanks to the fall of France, war can begin.

The reason why I don’t have pictures of the fall of France is that I didn’t want to go over the 10-pic per post limit, as I couldn’t be bothered to split it up. But I’m sure everyone has seen it in their games before so it doesn’t matter that its missing.

Next time, the war begins and we’ll see how effective my strategies are on land, air and sea. Of course, when you have 24 divisions stacked on the Egyptian border, strategy isn’t really necessary. Did I forget to mention that?

So the War begins!

Very interesting, Sybot. This particular Duce is quite prescient.

Update time again, thanks for replying all! The first part of the war is completed. There are ups and downs and…well I’ll just let you see.

An Empire Like No Other

Part Six:

The latest set of premonitions drafted by our great leader in his latest drunken stup...enlightenment carry a celebratory message, but also a slightly ominous one.

ita37xj0.jpg

Could he be suggesting that one of our own would be killed while we rout the enemy? I’d better be careful.

However, we can worry about that later, as at the moment the most important thing is to sort out the strategy for the war.

ita38pg1.jpg

The first phase of the war in Africa will involve forcing our way to El Alamein, thus cutting off several British divisions thanks to the impassable desert. After that we should have the numbers to easily overrun Eygpt.

ita39xc9.jpg

The first battles have mixed fortunes. The arrival of an extra division in Gibraltar messes up our chances of taking it; so more divisions are being shipped from the homeland to assist. Meanwhile, our main army succeeds in its push forwards. In a nice twist, we somehow get official rights to claim some of the provinces of Vichy France. Meanwhile the UK guarantees the independence of Greece. A worthless gesture, seeing as we’ll soon have the Mediterranean closed off.

The following day the USSR gets Bessabaria with from Romania. How can the Germans stand being friendly with those dogs?! The day after that there is a shocking development as Field Marshall Balbo is killed. How, I’m not sure as he was in North Africa commanding our troops, and not flying in a plane like the official reports stated. It’s all a bit suspicious. We have to do an emergency reordering of the command structure as a result.

The day after that our fleet wins its first naval battle, sinking a lone Destroyer flotilla with the audacity to sail our waters. The day after that (this is getting tedious) we advance on and defeat the defenders of Sidi Barrani. On July 2nd we sign the Tripartite Act with Germany and Japan. Later that same day, we lose Forte Maddalena to the British. Go on…dig yourselves deeper.

On the 4th Latvia is annexed by the Soviets and we begin our attack on Mersa Matruh. With fire support from our battleships the attack is a complete success. On the 6th a new attack on Gibraltar fails despite the arrival of three new divisions. Another set is on its way for the third attempt.

ita40kq3.jpg

The situation in Africa by July 9th is doing very well. Our offensive seems unstoppable and we are coming close to cutting off at least 12 British divisions. The offensive continues with an attack on Fuka

ita41qz7.jpg

On the 11th we have our first major naval encounter as the Secondary Fleet bumps into the British Mediterranean Fleet off the coast of Spain. In the end our ships are unable to close to firing range and so we withdraw with minimal damage. On the 12th we reach Fuka and find El Alamein woefully underdefended. Six divisions are sent on ahead to secure the province while the others rest and recuperate ready to finish off the encircled forces.

Suddenly, British troops land on Sardinia. We believe that is where the Fleets was heading that we ran into earlier. Luckily, three new divisions are on standby to retake it once the Secondary Fleet gets back to Taranto. It bumps into the British once more and once more is unable to close and attack.

On the 19th we arrive in El Alamein and now 16 divisions are trapped. We begin the process of rounding them up. As the month ends, Sardinia remains in enemy hands for the time being and we transfer the Primary Fleet to lend fire support to the next attempt on Gibraltar

ita42es5.jpg

The situation in Africa as August begins. Annoyingly the British are still getting supplies despite the fact that the desert to the south is impassable. Even more annoyingly, New Zealand has just loaded up Gibraltar with about seven divisions, making its capture impossible. We give up on trying to take it and withdraw our Mountaineers, leaving six divisions to guard Malaga. Until Nationalist Spain joins our alliance or the war in Africa ends, Gibraltar will be impossible to take.

The foolish British are thrown off of Sardinia on the 5th. They were insane to attempt such an attack without adequate support and as a result 10000 men have been taken prisoner. Not much happens until the 14th when we take Siwa. Although our troops are thrown out of the province by a massive counterattack, the encirclement is complete and the fate of the nine divisions that failed to escape it is assured.

ita43nr7.jpg

The fall of Nibeiwa. Shortly after that is done and thousands of British troops surrender, we eliminate a lone division in the region of Al Jaghbub that had got ahead of the main force. Now our next goal will be to focus our forces on taking Egypt before British reinforcements from Ethiopia arrive.

On the 18th the Allies have the audacity to land at Zuara, near Tripoli. How they managed to sneak past both our subs and fleets that were raiding convoys near Malta we’ll never know. Troops are scrambled from Sardinia and the enemy is eliminated quickly.

On August 22nd a massive assault on Alexandria with full support from the Primary Fleet begins. The battle lasts through the day and night, but our troops emerge victorious and the city will soon be ours. The following day British troops retake Siwa after they cannot advance to Nibeiwa. It doesn’t matter, as they’re still trapped and will soon be destroyed.

ita44ym0.jpg

The army enters the reaches the Nile easily on the 24th. Now the push for Suez can begin. As our troops enter the city, the small British fleet docked in the harbour attempts to flee, only to be vaporized by our waiting Battleships. On the 28th our bombers spot the main British fleet heading our way. Eager for a rematch, Il Duce orders the Primary Fleet to intercept. If we can close the distance this time our superior Battleship numbers should win this battle.

(Edit- little bit removed since I realised I was confused about IC in Addis Abba)

We engage the British fleet but almost immediately the cowards withdraw. The Secondary Fleet is in the vicinity so they are ordered to assist in the pursuit. However, they retreat the moment we engage again. As they are now heading into Port Malta we give up the chase and withdraw to fix the minor damage received in the first battle.

ita45hw3.jpg

The situation on September 3rd

Our next goal is to cross the Nile and take Suez. Enemy forces may be a hassle, but if the troops in Tobruk are an indication, we have a plan.

ita46eb3.jpg

A roster of ships eliminated by our almighty navy. Although we have yet to sink anything larger than a Heavy Cruiser, this war has only just begun and we have yet to lose a single flotilla. The Allies on the other hand…its just lucky for them that they have so many ships to make up for such appalling losses.

Once we take Suez the path to the Indian Ocean and all the treasures that lie therein will be open. Then we can truly begin to fulfil our aspirations!

A couple of notes on the war so far: I expected to be faster than I was in reaching Alexandria, but the fact that the Brits could get supplied through the impassable provinces surprised me. The navy also annoyed me as I could never seem to close with their Carriers, and if I did then they instantly withdrew. Of course, that’s a smart move on the part of the AI, but it's still frustrating. I’m also noticing a build up of troops by my allies on the Germany/Yugoslavia border. This is bad for me, as I only have a token force in North Italy and Albania. Hopefully they won’t attack before I get Suez.

Finally, it’s been a very slow update for techs, which I guess can be put down to them being high-level and so slow to complete.

Tough luck with Gibraltar! Hopefully you can take the Suez soon.

And I'm not sure if the game takes impassability into account when figuring out who's in supply...

He's right, supplies can always run through provinces irregardless of whether troops can. I think HSR took advantage of that by making Jeju (The korean island province) have a non-connection through to the home islands, so that asia was in supply.

And bad luck with Gibraltar, once the Commonwealth nations stack up on a province it becomes untakeable :( i guess you could always raid every single convoy they have and wait 2 months for their org to deplete.

Sorry this took so long, for some reason I didn’t feel enthusiastic about playing HOI2 recently. Then I read hobotnicajoe’s Hungary AAR to get me fired up again, so I guess you can thank him for this.

Also, sorry about the missing in pictures in this one. I write and record pictures as I play, so if I make a mistake and miss out or lose a picture, there’s no going back to get it (mainly because I can’t be bothered to replay everything to just get a screenshot)

An Empire Like No Other

Part Seven:

We managed to capture a large quantity of wine when we entered Alexandria. I think you can guess what happened to it. Sifting through the aftermath we found what appeared to be plans for the next phase of the African war.

ita47ph7.jpg

It looks like our great leader has decided that we will wait at Sue’s Canal until we can launch a sneak attack from behind. So it’s decided. Now back to the war.

Almost as soon as we step into the war room, good news comes in of a major convoy destruction in the Ligurian Sea. This is looking good already. Shortly afterwards we begin the major plan to secure Suez. While operations begin, there is a shocking development in the Middle East. A coup overthrows the Iraqi government and pushes them out of the Allies. As a result the UK attacks Syria, making them our Allies. This can only result in a boost for us!

ita48ms2.jpg

On September 6th our troops launch an all-out invasion of Palestine. The cities of Tel Aviv and Gaza fall easily and our troops begin filing ashore. On the 8th we launch a massive offensive to cross the Nile at As Suwayz. The lone band of militia guarding the crossing is easily pushed aside. Now we should have a foothold on the far side of the river.

On the 11th the Allies launch a massive attack on Fayum, but our forces are able to hold it thanks to superior numbers and air support. The attack was clearly a huge mistake as it has left large the British troops disorganized. We are able to push into the Nile Delta region with a mere three divisions as a result.

On the 12th we complete the last of the factories planned for the foreseeable future. The industry that had been building them is switched to work on transports and mountain infantry. On the 14th we easily push the British out of el-Arish and at the same time bring up an extra three divisions to assist in the new theatre.

Pic 49 (whoops I forgot to save this one, I added an extra bit to the next picture to make up for it)

The situation on September 18th.

With our forces across the Nile and an overwhelming presence in Palestine, the fall of Sue’s Canal in now inevitable. On the 21st the Syrians help complete an encirclement of British forces in the Golan Heights. We assist them and destroy the pocket. On the 22nd new offensives are launched to take Sue’s itself and also Eliat, in order to cut the remaining British territory in the region in half. There is also unfortunate news as the British take the last of our Ethiopian territory. This means reinforcements will soon appear in Eygpt.

Eliat falls, but Sue’s manages to hold for the time being. On the 25th a renewed assault is made on Sue’s, and with support from an amphibious landing the attack is a complete success. Unfortunately, the arrival of an enemy armoured division is enough to throw off the attack.

(Okay, for some reason my three land based divisions broke off the attack early, which made my defeat assured. Why is that? I thought only mil-controlled forces were likely to do that)

Cairo is taken on the 26th, further tightening the noose in north Egypt. An almost immediately we push to take Port Said.

ita50gu9.jpg

Our assault is an obvious success and so we abandon As Suwayz in favour of the west bank of the canal.

ita51xl2.jpg

The situation when September ends.

It appears that we will be able to eliminate at least seven enemy divisions when we trap them in Zaqazig. On October 2nd the Syrians manage to eliminate that division that can be seen in Bayir. Good for them, they’ve been very useful in this campaign so far. Our forces arrive in Port Said on the 3rd only to come under immediate and devastating attack from both the other side of Sues Canal and Zaqazig. We launch attacks into Zaqazig, but it isn’t enough and we lose and retreat.

Zaqaazig also manages to hold out as the sudden arrival of a British fleet forces our shore bombardment group to withdraw. On the 6th we encounter a small British fleet, destroying a Light Cruiser for the loss of a Destroyer flotilla. On October 10th we lose Port Said. However an immediate counterattack is enough to push them out again and once more complete the encirclement.

Pic 52 (sorry, I’m not paying attention. I accidentally lost this one too)

On the 14th Sharm el-Sheikh and Port Said are taken almost simultaneously, thus finally surrounding Sue’s. Although we are quickly forced out of Port Said, the attack on Sue’s goes ahead with overwhelming force and succeeds. Late on the 16th, the canal is ours! Maybe now we can find out who Sue is…

Now with our primary goal complete, it is merely a case of eliminating the remaining forces in north Egypt and then pushing south to liberate Ethiopia. And on the 17th, that goal is accomplished.

ita53wg3.jpg

That province is finally secured, but meanwhile the Canadians sneak in and take Haifa. Sigh. Luckily the Syrians gave us control of several of their divisions. These will be used to remove the irritation. Sardinia was taken again. Sigh. We’ll have to assign a defensive force there at some point.

Alas, the Syrians are useless and fail utterly, while the Allies once again prove the stupidity as they lose another ten thousand men on Sardinia. Hmm, I could of sworn those were Canadians earlier, but they seem to have magically lost their accents and become British. I wonder where their accents disappeared to, eh?

ita54ka8.jpg

The final outcome. With northern Egypt secure we can devote more troops to the coming invasion of Yugoslavia and to other future plans.
