CK2 Dev Diary #12: The Maim event

Hello all, it’s time for another DD about ZombieInvasion <Secret DLC*>! Today we’ll take a look at what we’ve done to the Maimed trait. Well, we’ve removed it! People without <Secret DLC> can still be Maimed, of course, but the lucky owners of <Secret DLC> will instead receive more specific injuries, such as: One-handed, One-legged, One-Eyed, Disfigured, or Mangled (this represents severe trauma to the torso, mostly). As well as allowing more specific wounds and flavor, this has allowed us to remove the Health penalty from most of these traits (Mangled still has one though). Instead, when you receive a maiming-type injury you will also receive the Severely Injured trait, which has some health and stat penalties, but will be lost after some time has passed. Afterall, while losing a hand is certainly not an enjoyable process, you do eventually heal up and can be perfectly healthy besides the missing appendage. Also, if anyone is feeling creative, please suggest interesting effects for these new traits - we do of course have some penalties on them, but I worry they are a little dull, so fire away and I may shamelessly steal your ideas.

Since both One-eyed and Disfigured affect the faces of characters, we have added a lot of new portrait props to reflect this. Here is a small sample of what you might see ingame:

We have also added several events relating to life with missing body parts:

the loss of a hand is a severe blow to a famous warrior

That’s all for now, next week I am not certain which DD we will show, either I will talk about some extra Pagan features we’ve added, or Doomdark will give you some of his thoughts about CK2. It will be a surprize!

*= DLC contains no zombies

One-Handed event chain: if you are male and have an older male rival who you duel, there is a chance to lose your hand and have the older male rival reveal that he is actually your father a la Star Wars.

Wait a sec, i saw these "maimed" traits somewhere, hmmm. Ohh yes, Elder Kings Mod

Coincidence, right ? .........

Wait... you can be maimed at different body parts? That's very innovative by Elder Kings... wait... no it's not very innovative. It's just logical.

That moment when you realize that your immortal king is inevitably going to get every possible type of maiming and eventually become incapable, leading to an unending regency.

Related note, immortal incapable ruler + regency counsel needs to be a new EUIV government type in the converter. :3

Well for one-handed, just attach something.
  • I think a cool "Hook: +2 Martial" due to some event from having a resourceful Marshal (15+ learning?).
  • Hook + Pegleg -> Allows this character to raid coasts from boats.
  • attached mirror +1 intrigue (look around corners)
  • writing tool +1 learning
strong+viking+disfigured -> allows new combat tactic "monstrous intimidating charge"

If you lose your right hand the Catholic church should have an opinion penalty towards you since you became left handed and as we all know the church frowns upon lefties.

I like the Republic Pirate look. Can we gain a Nickname as "Pirate" or "Privateer"?
Own Countrymen "Privateer" +3 Diplo
All others on map "Pirate" -3 Diplo

Overcome injury as a life focus with various paths and events based on the injury. For instance allow a broken martial character to retrain as a spymaster or steward.

For female characters who are either maimed or have the leper trait, you code in some event chains that depict them becoming depressed (since few men will want to marry a maimed woman unless it was for money and power) and or perhaps becoming even more obsessed with beauty (for those with the attractive trait). The possible exception are those who have military traits since another set of event chains can have them undergo training to compensate for their disability. Also as part of the event chain, you can have them travel around training random characters in the ways of war.

I really like the idea of the events related to characters learning to compensate for their injuries. It could let you make the penalties for each maimed trait more severe, with the events tied to compensating reducing the penalties (but not eliminate them entirely). Particularly skilled rulers might find ways to turn their disadvantage into a benefit, at least in other fields. So someone who loses an eye might take a big combat, intrigue, and learning penalty immediately, but through events can partially recover all of those before learning to specialize in either intrigue or learning afterwards for a small bonus over their original stat. Missing a leg costs combat skill and martial, but a fighter can turn to stewardship and learning instead in the events that follow.

For added interest, the events might even let you re-educate yourself! So losing a hand might actually result in a warrior putting down their sword entirely and becoming a theologian.

If they add an inspector gadget reference event line for characters with 3+ appendages missing I will be really amused.

I think it'd be cool if having the customization DLC let you throw on Eye patches and masks (mutually exclusive, naturally) for no reason. I would also request the ability to take the mask off to see that ugly mug but I'm guessing there isn't any ugly under the masks.
