Hello all.

Sadly we can't yet talk about the big feature of Common Sense, Subject Interaction.. As we are completely redoing the interface for it, so it has to wait until next week.

Instead, we'll talk about a major change to the Holy Roman Empire, and give you the new achievements for 1.12.

Imperial Authority and Reforms

Imperial Authority has had a significant rework in 1.12. The old system tended to advance or retreat authority in big lurches and was very open to exploits. It also did not take into account how well the Empire was doing overall, and there was little benefit for the Emperor to maintain a large number of member states.

This has been changed in 1.12, as many of the events that gave Imperial Authority have been replaced with ticking values. The monthly change to Imperial Authority is now displayed in the interface, and will depend on factors such as:
- Whether there is peace in the Empire
- Total number of member states
- The amount of HRE territory held by outside powers
- The amount of HRE territory held by heretics & heathens
- The number of electors and free cities

An Emperor who is doing a good job will see their Imperial Authority naturally grow without having to resort to methods such as annexing states when authority is at 0 only to release them again later, while an Emperor that allows outside powers and heretics to dominate the Empire will find themselves unable to pass reforms entirely.

As part of this change, we've also revised the old 'Imperial Integrity' modifier for having more than 25 princes. We felt this modifier was both too strong and too arbitrary, so it has been removed. Instead, the HRE reforms were buffed to provide more of an incentive for members to vote for reform.

Regarding the new achievements, I am glad there will be one for Bohemia, finally, just that it does not make any sense - ... Would you please make that new Bohemian achievement with some historical flavour instead? For example, "Jan Hus was right" = force protestant religion upon HRE ...

Since there will be some changes touching my home Bohemia in next patch or DLC, I gave it some more thought about what could be in the game and how to make it more appealing choice for players. In this period, the country history was largely determined by the legacy of Jan Hus, Catholic reformer, who preceded Martin Luther by 100 years, and was burnt as heretic in 1415. The game already contains some historical events related to Hussite movement, allowing the player to place a historical domestic Hussite dynasty "z Podebrad" on Bohemian throne, and making some religious decisions later. That is the base we can build on. At the game beginning in 1444, the country still recovers from long religious turmoil of Hussite revolution from 1419 to 1434 and later, resulting in devastating civil war during which the Hussite warriors defeated 5 crusades (no mean feat!) that pope and emperor sent against them. In the end, the crusaders flew the battlefield the moment they heard the coming Hussites to sing their holy chorales ...

Here are some thoughts for adding Bohemia some historical flavour and making it more attractive country to play by adding series of religious missions (similar to Byzantine missions for recovering Roman Empire):

  • Bohemia should start the game with 90-100 military tradition and 50% discount on mercenaries. History? After 15 years of religious wars, Bohemian warriors were widely considered the most experienced in Central Europe in this period, with high morale, feared and sought after as mercenaries in all surrounding countries.
  • If the player accepts the dynasty "z Podebrad" in the event "Return of the Hussites", he is later offered a series of diplomatic missions sent to any European court. If the diplomatic relationships reach 90% with a major power, the desire for religious reform of Catholic faith increases by 10%, for regional power by 5% and for minors by 1%. History? After ascending to Bohemian throne, the Hussite king "Jiri z Podebrad" ended in international isolation towards other (still Catholic) powers and sent out diplomatic missions in an attempt to break it.
  • If these missions are successful, Bohemia gets a chance to accelerate the appearance of Protestant reformation. If reformation starts before the year 1500, Bohemia is guaranteed the first Center of Reformation to appear in Bohemia.
  • (common mission for any country) The player owning any CoR then gets a mission to acquire (diplomatically or militarily) the provinces where remaining CoRs appear. If the player succeeds and owns all CoRs of his faith, he becomes "Unifier of (Protestant or Reformed) Faith" and gets achievement accordingly. The Protestant or Reformed role of "Unifier of the Faith" would get similar bonuses as Papal Controller for Catholic Faith. Since CoRs are usually spread all over Europe, this is not an easy task to achieve. The player either has to conquer most of Europe, or go selectively after certain provinces that are remote and difficult to hold when isolated.
  • If Bohemia achieves locking Protestant faith as the official religion of HRE, the player gets an achievement "Jan Hus was right". As you know, this usually involves a wide scale pan-European war similar to historical "30 Years War". Alternatively, this achievement could also entail converting all Catholic provinces in the world to Protestant faith.

I also posted this suggestion in separate thread.

So, what do you think? Would these changes make Bohemia more appealing country to play?

Big Blue Blob - As France, hold 100 european core provinces before 1500.
With the new starting mil tech that France will have, this would be easy as pie.

Any change on Unlawful territory? IMO some nations should accept it based on military might and relations with emperor. It's silly to have that button knowing they will not accept...

What would be most realistic is a dubble path: an easier one that leads to a decentralized Empire with bonuses and one that leads to the Emperor taking over but that would generate more conflict and less bonusses. (For example, the princes could stop supporting the Emperor with troops (manpower) when his power becomes to great.)

Jesus that sounds like a really good idea.

Komenoi Empire - Make Trebizond into an Empire.
Lucky Lucca - As Lucca, own Lucknow!
A Fine Goosestep - Form Prussia and get 125% Discipline.
Meissner Porcelain
- As Saxony own all chinaware provinces.
All Your Trade are Belong to Us! - Have highest tradepower in Genoa, Venice, & English Channel, while gaining 300 income per month.

Now you've given me a reason to steamroll with Prussia once again. :)

I'm not sure where you get that idea. He's not talking about cheese, he's talking about literal cheat engines to fool Steam into thinking you have the achievement. And I just don't see the evidence behind widespread use of such cheat engines.

Exactly, even though it's super easy there is no widespread abuse of it.

So why do people think suddenly if it's available outside of ironman it would be widespread? Or in multiplayer ironman.

In the context of many of the achievements under 1% doesn't give us a very clear thing. Something like seeing full percentage would be significantly better if you've got a link for that. The difference between Ryukyu and some of the other ones are huge for example.

Re: Civ - Maybe they changed it but I've played a lot of games and not gotten any achievements.

Either way my point is made, if they have it enabled then look how the entire value of achievements hasn't broken down, if they haven't then look at the dead multiplayer of Civ V (at least in terms of getting consistent games with pubs).

So, what do you think? Would these changes make Bohemia more appealing country to play?
Personally, I think Bohemia is an awkward position. Not so powerful that the "majors only" players will want to play them, yet still so powerful that the normal "2-3 HRE minor" type player will not be interested.

Still, we could always do with more nations getting more interesting flavor.

Please hire a native English speaker to do localization, the game is full of barely comprehensible stuff like this.
This is a joke by purpose, it is supposed to incomprehensible if you do not get the reference. ;)

It could bring the game's quality down for some, though.

EU3's in jokes were really ridiculous and horrible, and they didn't have to be there really.
