Didn't the communists IRL denounce imperialism and capitalist warmongering? And didn't they want to create an international communist movement that would transcend political boundaries?

In their rhetoric? Sure. In reality? Not really.

Considering the Cold War was a world-wide war of influence between the USSR and the USA, and just about every war that happened during that time was between two (or more) client states, I'd describe the USSR as heavily imperialist.

The USSR was a major world power and it would have been impossible to make it if they were pacifist; they came to power through a revolution. Most communist parties in-game are also pro-military/jingo, but there's a lot of anti-military ones and a few pacifist ones.

well, you could argue that being in a neighbourhood with a fascist regime that caused the death of 20 millions of your citizens and a reactionary Superpower that would have nuked the USSR if it was possible, where very good reasons to weaken your military and leaving the countries of the world alone in the influence of these nations.
But in the case of USSR vs. USA you can't blame the USA on evrything since the USSR wanted to crush capitalism as much as the USA wanted to crush communism.

But one thing is still relevant, and that is that Stalinist communism isn't the way communism would have neccesarily turned out to. Stalin was a reactionary and unfortunately influenced China and north korea to the worse (Cuban represion of it's citizens got worse with escalation and cold state of war with the huge threat that was the USA).

So, I think in a game like Victoria 2 it's defenitely plausible to play with communist governments that are not your typical Stalinist nightmares. Althought the capitalist answer to the proletarian revolution might nearly allways be escalation and thus strenghening reactionary forces on both sides, so a peacefull comunist country in a capitalist world would be something very hard to achieve.
