I would like to start the AAR thread with an introduction and lead in. Is there any problem with starting a new thread?
I suppose another would be OK. Just don't want to encourage lots of threads for the same thing.

I will become a monster. WC might be too optimistic. I forgot that I have such low manpower.

Americans can only build cavalry once they eliminate the whiteman penalty. After swapping maps, placing merchants in European CoTs eliminates the whiteman.

EDIT - for some reason I thought the American pagans couldnt build cavalry :confused:

As the caption of the picture states, they are from an "enthusiastic" army, which I guess would mean from an "Enthusiasm for the army"-event, which can generate cavalry even for American Pagans.

Alright...Im a total newb when it comes to isolated pagans...but how did you get those (5000?) cavalry before the whiteman penalty was elimated? as in the sixth pic?

Ok, well I guess that must be the only way?

Sorry, just curious.... :)

It's one of those hidden colonies of horses. Been cut off for millenia, sealed in their valley until discovered by someone in a hurry who rides one away.Soon all the nobles want one and there is much enthusiasm for "cavalry".

[anchor=Introduction]Introduction[/anchor]

The Chimú people of the northern Andean area of South America lived in a kingdom known as Chimor. In the EU2 game, the nation is known as Chimú. The people and the country are hereafter referred to as Chimu because some fonts do not support the spelling of Chimú, Chimú is impossible to type on some keyboards, and because the use of Chimor would be confusing when comparing to the game.

In real life, the Chimu accounted for two-thirds of the people of the Andes. Most of the valley people near the Chimu's capital of Chan Chan in the Moche valley of Peru joined peacefully. At the center of the Chimu's 1000 kilometers of coastline, the people of Sican were conquered. Led by Tupac Inca Yupanqui, the Inca conquest of the Chimu began around 1470 and was nearly complete in 1493 when Tupac Inca Yupanqui died. The Chimu were the largest remaining rival to the Inca until Tupac Inca Yupanqui succeeded in his conquests. There were still remaining artifacts and stories of the Chimu people when the Spanish arrived about 50 years later.

Of course, in the game of EU2, history is often rewritten. This is the story of a proud Chimu nation that easily conquers the Andes and by craftiness and treachery is able to take fighters of the new world to the old world. Although perhaps few in numbers, Chimu soldiers march toward a destiny of greatness. How great shall that destiny be? Only time can tell as this tale of rewritten history unfolds.

[anchor=Let_the_game_begin]Let the Game Begin[/anchor]

Chimu begins with seven provinces in the northern Andes of South America valued at a total of 19d base tax. Chimu has one gold mine creating 0.20% gold inflation for the nation each year. Chimu's initial monthly income is 10.4d per month, 7.3d of that coming from gold.

Domestic policy (DP) sliders are reasonable compared to most nations' starting positions, except that ten clicks toward Centralization are required. For more settlers, ten clicks toward Free Trade are also required; Chimu will not be participating in much trade. Chimu currently receives 1.0 settler per year. Chimu must maintain a maximum Land and a nearly minimum Quality combination for more manpower. With a Quality of one, one click of Quality is required in one direction or the other. Minimum Innovativeness allows settlers and keeps stability costs low when combined with maximum Serfdom. Maximum Offensive gives the needed shock for a low-tech nation and compensates for the morale lost with maximum Serfdom. Maximum Aristocracy is needed for more diplomats and greater success in diplomatic actions; inexpensive cavalry is also a must for a low-tech nation.

Chimu has land tech zero, naval tech zero, trade tech one, and infrastructure one. Trade and naval techs are reachable by investments of about 5400d. New trade and infrastructure techs are far from reach at about 32000d.

Chimu begins with knowledge of the Andes and little else. Knowledge of the uncolonized province of Bogota may be essential in discovering Spanish settlers as soon as possible. Spain generally colonizes Cartagena to the north by the middle of the 16th century.

Most provinces of the Andes are initially unfortified. Minimal fortresses exist in Cajamarca, the game's capital of Chimu, and Cuzco, the capital of Inca Empire. Chimu begins with 70d for building infantry at 4d for each 1000 men. Chimu is initially incapable of using cavalry in its armies except by special event.

Centralization is the first priority. An all out effort is made to raise land tech as fast as possible. Investment in land tech is to be maximized even until land tech two is reached with a tech penalty of over 40000d. The thinking is that by 1550 a good balance toward land tech three would result in a few tech progressions when all tech penalties are removed. However, by that time investment split among all techs would nearly be maximized such that the removal of even a little tech penalty would result in the gaining of all techs. That would not be good since penalties would be paid in all techs without multiple tech progressions at all. Besides, land tech is the one thing that is really needed.

Next, an army of 14K infantry is completed before Chimu receives the first diplomat on July 1, 1419. Chimu immediately DoWs Inca Empire. An additional 3K infantry will soon be added.

Infantry rush through the unfortified Incan provinces nullifying troop-building efforts in the enemy provinces. Inca Empire's only hope is 4K infantry built in Cuzco. Chimu's men block Inca Empire's retreat to the north. Chimu wins battle after battle as Inca Empire's men are forced to the southernmost province. Inca Empire's troops are not allowed to recover morale. However, Inca Empire's remaining 1000 men win a battle in the southernmost province. Inca Empire builds an additional 3K men as they win a second battle. Outnumbered and surrounded, Inca Empire ultimately looses its last men. A siege in Cuzco progresses and is complete.

[anchor=Inca_Empire_Is_Annexed]Inca Empire Is Annexed[/anchor]

Synchronized looting of Inca Empire allows money for promotion of tax collectors in Chimu's seven provinces. Five merchants are placed in the CoT of Cuzco at a cost of 1d each. Over 663d is then saved for tax collectors in Inca Empire's 13 provinces. At that time, research on land tech one is complete at about 5500d. Land tech two is very far away at about 56000d; increasing the tech penalty for no contact is not of an immediate concern. On June 1, 1429 Inca Empire is annexed.

Gold inflation remains at about 0.20% to 0.21% per year. Monthly income is about 57d. Chimu is behind only China and Aztec Empire in terms of monthly income. Census tax is about 67d without stability modification. Census tax will increase with Centralization.

Many decades of peace follow the annexation of Inca Empire. Natives are wiped away; and Pastaza is colonized requiring only 13 colonization attempts. Colonization success rates go up by 13%. Bogota is not colonized for fear of an immediate war with Spain if Chimu's first contact with the old world is a Spanish colony in Cartagena. In 1456, Chimu's CoT in Cuzco disappears for lack of competition.

After five DP clicks toward Centralization, a third petition for redress in 1459 brings Centralization to eight. Two new valuable mineral events increase annual gold production by 20d. A reformation of the army helps with the primary tech research.

There are no other really good or bad events in these years and many more decades. There is just the usual, some rebellions, corruption events (which is no problem with all the unspent census tax and gifts), artisans are executed, merchants are unhappy, some new lands are claimed, some manpower and base tax is otherwise gained, good government policies outweigh poor government policies. Stability is average overall, where it would otherwise be good if not for the petitions for redress (which are good things). No investment is made toward stability, the cost of which is just over 200d. Two good monarchs contribute 12d per month toward stability; one monarch contributes only 8d per month toward stability.

In 1479, maximum Centralization is reached contributing to a census tax of 85d without stability modification. All DP effort is next to be focused on Free Trade policies.

In 1482, there is an unprovoked rebellion in Taqari. The rebels are allowed to march through Titicaca on the way to Cuzco where they are defeated. In 1486, Inca Empire springs up in Titicaca. Tech costs are reduced slightly as a result. The unfortified capital of the new enemy nation is quickly captured. Taqari is restored to Chimu control. By 1489, research into land tech two and naval tech one near completion. By 1496, land tech and naval tech research is complete. Inca Empire is annexed at a cost of three badboy. Assuming discovery of the world in about 60 years, there is plenty of time to reduce badboy. Badboy now stands at 8.5.

[anchor=Exploration_Begins]Exploration Begins[/anchor]

In December of 1502, an enthusiasm for the army event brings Chimu the joy of adding 5000 cavalry-like warriors to its army. Practiced riders ride specially bred llamas on chariot-like devices. The prized llamas and riders are preserved as much as possible by allowing them to stay in the plains of Lima. The centralized location allows quick access to pick up a new conquistador wherever he may show up. And only one year later, at the end of 1503, a conquistador answers the king's call for greater exploration of the world. Because of the early conquistador, it is realized that the tech advance of land tech two came at a great penalty of over 40000d.

Cavalry in Lima run to meet the conquistador in Cuzco. Some cheap infantry are built to aid in fighting natives. On horseback throughout all his travels, the conquistador makes a direct path along the Amazon toward Portuguese Brazil. Not Spain, but Portugal is more likely to exchange maps. Suffering attrition at most times, infantry is used to fight natives where the cavalry fail. Infantry will also be used to explore many colonized provinces in Brazil to help map exchange likelihood as much as possible. In 1505, Portugal is discovered. The conquistador discovers gold in Guyana before turning back toward Brazil. Two state gifts to Portugal at a cost of 212d each are required to bring relations to +200. Portugal grants military access, but refuses to exchange discoveries. A military alliance is likely required for map exchange. Unfortunately, Portugal is in an alliance but is not the alliance leader. However, very fortunately, Portugal's alliance leader is Spain.

The conquistador then runs to discover Spain in the Argentinean portion of South America. The Conquistador discovers the inland provinces since it is reasonable to assume Portugal will first colonize the coastal provinces, which may then be explored by any army. The infantry armies are used for the explorations. They retreat from the natives in those Portuguese provinces. The natives attack and remove some of Portugal's colonies. Chimu sets up its first colony other than Pastaza in Marajo. Marajo is a likely candidate for troop collection that may come along the Amazon enroute to the old world. Collecting troops in Portugal's ToT territory is a bad idea since they may be attacked at any time once the ToT rules are in effect.

In 1506, the Treaty of Tordesillas causes Portugal's troops to attack infantry in the Brazilian area. Portugal wins all battles and prevents infantry from following the conquistador. In 1507, Spain is discovered. Two state gifts to Spain at a cost of 395d each, bring relations to +200. Chimu joins Spain's alliance and joins a war against six European nations. Baden, Bayern, Hessen, Roma, Wurzburg, and Wurttemberg are discovered. Tech penalties are eased due to less no contact penalty and less whiteman penalty; but no tech is near being discovered. Spain grants military access as well. Nobles ally with foreign power and relations with Portugal drop before map exchange could be successful.

Chimu sets up colonies in Recife and Pernambuc, which have some of the highest base, tax and are closest to the old world. They may be useful provinces for building troops; they are also likely waypoints for soldiers and ships headed to the old world. Another colony is established in Uruguay. Uruguay has a base tax of six, has grain, and borders Spain to help ensure an alliance for the coming years.

The conquistador discovers a path connecting the Andes to Argentina, proven in past games to be useful in times of war with Spain or Portugal. The conquistador also discovers coastal provinces around the horn of South America, useful for colonizing the way to a sea-faring passage between the Andean lands and the world at large. Portugal does not explore the sea route around the horn the way Spain does. It is still assumed that Portugal will be the one to exchange maps and not Spain. Two personal gifts at 89d are required to return relations with Portugal to +200.

[anchor=Map_Exchange]Map Exchange[/anchor]

In 1509, an excellent minister is received. The minister works on improving chances for map sharing between Spain and Portugal. The minister has discovered the Spanish and Portuguese have come in search of certain peoples for opening up extensive trade and sharing of information. The minister trains diplomats to act in customs more resembling Chinese behaviors. In so doing, map explorations may more easily be gained.

Portugal is not fooled by the act. Portugal knows 588 provinces not discovered by Chimu; Chimu knows 46 provinces not discovered by Portugal. Spain knows 586 provinces not discovered by Chimu; Chimu knows 58 provinces not discovered by Spain. Spain gladly exchanges maps. Five merchants sent to European CoTs are all that is required to eliminate the whiteman penalty. Cavalry for the conquistador and warships for exploration of sea-zones outside port are built. Only one province need be colonized to provide a link to the outside world. Valparaiso has a nice base tax of six as well.

The excellent minister assists in obtaining military access from Maya. Maya has useful ports and land access for exploring the land around Aztec Empire and eventually launching an attack against the Aztecs. A scandal at the court happens and lowers Spain's relations to Chimu. Spain has discovered Chimu's trickery.

Chimu ends the war with Wurzburg by a white peace. There is no point risking the treasury to a war that is of no interest. Another scandal at the court lowers Spain's relations further. The conquistador discovers the remaining Amazon provinces for better troop movement along the Amazon. The conquistador discovers a path to Mayan territory. Next, the northern provinces of South America are discovered. Colonies are set up in Bogota and Cartagena for improved troop deployment. Six warships meet up with the conquistador to help discover Tobago and Trinidad and then Cape Verde. A warship is lost at sea during the discovery of Cape Verde. With the colonization of Cape Verde a low attrition sea-route to the old world is made possible. The conquistador discovers the final non-island province of South America. He now goes by galleys to explore North America.

In all, the fleet now contains 13 warships and 32 galleys. The first cavalry transport is made through the Amazon area. One thousand men leave every 15 days from Pastaza to arrive in Marajo some months later. The first delivery of 8K cavalry is made to Iberia in anticipation of war with Spain. Most of the required cavalry for war are built in coming years. In 1515, Monterey is discovered and the conquistador dies soon thereafter. About half of the 62K cavalry accumulated thus far have already been transported to Iberia. Galleys are used between Cartagena and Recife; warships are used from Recife to Algarve.

[anchor=War_with_Spain_1]War with Spain[/anchor]

Chimu has soon transported over 58K men to Iberia. Military access with Spain is cancelled. Chimu leaves the alliance with Spain. A letter of introduction at 45d is sent to Spain in order to tip relations just above +100; a DoW on Spain without CB will only cost two badboy instead of four. Spain is now at war with France. On October 21, 1517, Chimu declares war on Spain. Ships have just left the Iberian area. Synchronized looting of Spain is in the works. The loot is mostly spent on colonists since all troop buildup is already accomplished. Investment is made into stability to reduce revolt risk.

Spain has only a few thousand men in Castilla and is otherwise absent from its core provinces. Multiple sieges are easily set up. It seems impossible to clear Spain's low defense force from Castilla for many months. The plains province of Leon is quick to fall into Chimu control. A few thousand of Spain's cavalry and other troops arrive to remove Chimu's siege force from Cantabria. Spain besieges Leon. The largest battle of the war comes as over 18K of Chimu's cavalry attack Spain's 11K men in Leon. Spain routes the Chimu attack. Chimu's 18K men are cut down to half. Still, Spain's men are eventually eliminated from Iberia. Reinforcement troops coming from South America make a couple of attacks on The Canary Islands. Neither attack is successful. The Canary Islands is desired as spoils of war in order to preserve the low attrition link to the old world.

Spain's largest force of men unloads to Chimu's Brazilian colonies. Spain's men suffer attrition in the tropical lands. The provinces are easily retaken when Spain's men move away. Galleys meet up with Spain's ships to nearly annihilate the enemy fleets. Spain's men are stranded.

By 1520, Spain's capital is about to fall. New maps reveal some provinces coastal to the Gulf of Mexico. Also provinces of West Africa are discovered; that will not be of much use for some time. Toledo falls soon after Castilla. Galleys transport 15K cavalry to Argentina to wrest Copetonas from Spain's few thousand soldiers there. Unfortunately a native attack in Copetonas must be put down resulting in the death of the low aggressive natives.

[anchor=Peace_with_Spain_1]Peace with Spain[/anchor]

On April 21, 1521, Spain accepts a 53% peace demand while losing at a 78% war score. Chimu takes Andalusia, Toledo, and a level six colony in Copetonas plus 50d. With the acquisition of Andalusia, gold inflation is reduced from 0.20% per year to 0.17% per year. The gold in Toledo likely contributes very little to gold inflation. For nations with plenty of gold, gold inflation goes up by very little compared to the benefit of the gold income. The minimum gold inflation is either 0.00% or 0.10%; so if a country gets any gold inflation at all, they may as well get as much gold as possible. Chimu's income is now second only to China. China receives 102.12d per month; and Chimu receives 86.28d per month.

The realization is that manpower is now the limiting factor at a worldwide success with Chimu. With the best of DP sliders, Chimu has only 13K buildable troops per year. That is only 1K above the minimum. With the conquest of Aztec Empire and some colonies, Chimu might hope to double that amount of buildable troops. Still that is only about one-third of what is needed for a WC.

Great start. As Duke said, nice interpretation of the enthusiasm for the army event. The thing with the the "Chinese" minister was also well-found.

Taking it to Spain already was a bold but valuable move. This is great so far. Continued good luck.

The WC has begun! Great job in Iberia BTW.

Good exploitation. Rather cheeky playing around with spain like that.

Woo-hoo! I just found this. Great to see another WC attempt by one who makes it look so easy! :D I've already learned one or two tips from reading this that may help me in a current game as Benin (not a WC for sure, I hasten to add!) Anyway, good luck - I'm reading.

Is it preferable to knock out the more dangerous Europeans, or conquer the other natives? Probably a combination of both, I would think. But then I have never conquered the world as an Indian country, or even tried, so I don't know.

Yeah, I don't know what I'm doing either. It was a must to take the shipyard in Andalusia. That gets me rooted in Europe. So I probably want to avoid expansion into Africa. Too many fronts in the badboy wars would be disasterous. I can conquer as many of the American nations as is highly profitable. I can conquer the rest of the Americans about the time the badboy wars begin.

You should go for colonising all of America! :D
Of course I have to colonize all of America. I need every little 0.25 of manpower I can get. I also need every colony built by another nation that is less than 5000 population. Unfortunately, the majors do not seem to be doing very well at colonizing in this game.
