While I wholeheartedly support the first plank of the Kenzington - Beckendorf Bill, I cannot support the second point. Europe has been colonizing Africa for decades now, what is so different about Italian ambitions from those of the English, French, Dutch, Belgian, Spanish, Portuguese or Germans before them? This nation has never condemned their similar conquests in the past and should not start now. Ethiopia has no effect on national or world security.

As for the German occupation of the Rhineland I find this little reason for concern. We cannot expect Germany to remain prostrate before France and Britain forever. The re-occupation of their national territory, which, I should remind you endured years of French occupation, is clearly a matter of national pride for them. Attempting to punish the Germans would only increase their belligerence and anti - American sentiments, a clear path to another world calamity.

Finally, I would like to thank all of you who supported the Rudolf - Danner bill. Although we were not victorious, we gave the opposition a good run for their money and managed to influence the final bill in a positive manner.

Thomas Rudolf [R-OH]

((Couple of quick questions: how can we build tanks without any gun, armor, or reliability techs? Are they just engines with a frame or did you start them after the techs were researched? Also, how are you going to do the presidential elections, are you just going to let the game handle them or will we get input?))

Well, you make a point that Italy should be punished harder, Germany can be emargoed for 4 months as the bill said 4-6 months.

However on that comission of yours, those 2 nationalists/fascits would said no to any help as they would support Germany and Italy and the reds would say no to anything that could possibly treathen the soviet union, so i dont believe such a comission would work, though its a very good idea.

-Senator William Fitzgerald Kenzington

As a reply to those words I would like to say,as a left-wing senator, that the re-occupation of the Rheinland doest threaten the Soviet Union much. However I don't fuuly accept the action of the Reich.Millions of men,French,German,British and importantly AMERICAN,died to take the Rheinland and now the Germans take it back like this. Please it is not acceptable

Senator John Sarigis

I vote to join the Comintern. The Soviet Union offers us plenty of ways to expand strategically. The actions of the stupid Fuhrer in Berlin is indeed worrisome, but let the French and British deal with it. As for Italy: The Allies can easily overrun that weak neo-Empire.

I recommend we influence policy of our neighbors towards our eventual viewpoint too.

Signed,
Sen. Mary Phillipps
California

((Remember, you can't influence other nations until we join a faction.))

Foreign policy polls:

Isolationist 2
Comintern 1
Axis 0
Allies 0

Also, we need to formally vote on what I'm calling the Italian Embargo Act. Just vote Aye or Nay.

Aye

Aye.

Senator Sinclaire still supports Isolationism. We can't stay isolationist forever, but now is not the time to pick sides yet.

Thomas Rudolf [R-OH]

I can only applaud my dear colleague from the state of Ohio, he has basically voiced my entire opinion on this whole matter. While I think it is a sad happening for the people of Abyssinia to be integrated into the Italian Kingdom I also believe this has happened many times before with other natives. The very soil we stand on used to belong to native tribes! If we are to condemn the Italians for this matter, why not condemn the British and French for the same matter? Every large European nation still has colonial holdings. It would be hypocritical to only judge Italy about it.

As for the re-occupation of the Rhineland, I believe we all saw this coming a long time ago. The treaty of Versailles was never a fair treaty, no matter what happened in the Great War. The Germans should have the right to reclaim some of their industrial heartland, the Great War has been over for years now.

Therefore I say nay to the Italian Embargo Act and once more state that I believe our nation should remain in her isolationist position for the upcoming years.

Sincerely,

Republican Senator Nathan B. Mount of the State of New York

I cast my vote for the United States to remain Isolationist in these unsure times. We need not commit ourselves to a war that has no impact on our nation.

As for the Italian Embargo act, I wholeheartedly say nay. It would be completely unfair and hypocritical to solely punish the Italians for behavior that most European powers participate in. Furthermore, I fail to see how this nation would maintain credibility for punishing the Italians for their African holdings whereas we, ourselves, maintain strong influence Liberia.

-Sen. John Baker

My fellow Senators I think it is in our nations best interest to remain isolationist and to stay out of world affairs, these United States gained nothing from the first european war.

Also I say NAY to the Italian act much for the same reasons the good Senator Baker has put forth.

-Sen. Cornelius Fredrickson of Virginia

You make an excellent point, Senator.

Polls are:

Isolation 6
Comintern 1
Axis 0
Allies 0

Italian Embargo Act:
Aye: 3
Nay: 3

((I'm a bit surprised at how much support this bill is getting!))

I blieve you are very unfair for comparing Ethiopia with Liberia, We have not used gas against the Liberians, we have not invaded Liberia, but Italy isnt the only nation that has behaved bad i Africa, though the only nation to use gas accoridng to my knowledge

-Senator William Fitzgerald Kenzington

I vote for an Isolationist stance with regards to the events in Europe, this continues to be their problem not ours. I hope the French and British can resolve this issue however. I also vote nay in the embargo.

-Senator Clark Gable

I vote Yes on the embargo act against the Kingdom of Italy.

- Sen. Mary Phillipps

The Europeans are known for the fascination with colonization! We are not embargoing France, Britain, The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain or Portugal either are we now? Thus I vote Nay on the Italian Embargo Act! Once again: let them play in their desserts, we have more urgent matters at hand.

- Sen. John Linton

((PS: you obviously should say Aye, Sakura! It sounds much more ... piratelike!))

I will concede to you in part. We did not take Liberia by force, but rather colonization. The forced influence exerted by the Italians in the name of Imperialism is quite similar to ours in Liberia, I hope you will agree. While not achieved through the same means, the end result is the same.

Now if I may turn your attention to other Imperialistic ventures we have participated in, I would point you to the Philippine-American war, in which tens of thousands of Philippine nationalists were brutally destroyed at the hands of the American army. And while gas was not deployed, or even conceived to my knowledge, American troops committed horrific atrocities.

No powerful nation's hands are clean of these revolting actions, including the great United States, and thus I feel diplomatic action against Italy for maintaining the status quo would be both uncalled for and hypocritical. I am disgusted by the actions of all involved in these terrible events, but an embargo against Italy is not the answer.

I didn't mean that we aren't innocent, i know what we did on the philippines and i'm ashmed of that, i know that we act Imperialistic (acted) over Liberia but i merely wanted to point out the ways Italy acted over Ethiopian, you can't really compare Liberia to Ethiopia, more right would be Philippines to Ethiopia and there still is difference

Also wouldn't it be better if we tried to repay and repent what we did in the past in our days now, no one of us here can hardly be accused of invading the Philippines. We live with the legacy of our fathers but we now have the power to change that, but we shouldn't do so by Military means.

A Letter to Congress Regarding the US Navy;

Salutations, Men and Women of our Senate and House of Representatives. It is my duty as Chief of Naval Operations for the United States Military to brief you on the overall situation of our great country's fleets, and of the plans we have if we go to war.

Currently our navy is divided into five main battlegroups - four based around a core of battleships and one based around a core of aircraft carriers. Each consists of three capital ships and various escorts suiting their roles. We have an additional two reserve groups, consisting of our more outdated battleships as well as some number of cruisers and destroyers. The reserve groups will be there to reinforce any depleted battlegroups in the event of war, and will gladly combat the enemy in the event of war. Our goal is currently to establish dominance in the field of naval aviation - we are currently behind the Royal Navy in numbers of carriers, and so I aim to strengthen the US Navy to a count of 6 fleet carriers by 1938 or 1939 at the latest, with two escort carriers designed to lead and protect submarine hunters or offer air cover to our vulnerable battleship groups as necessary.

Rest assured that the Navy has prioritized funding of naval aviation, but we are disappointed that Congress has vehemently dictated what areas of carrier research we must indulge in. While I am not one to question our great government, I would hope you could leave the decision making regarding budget expenditure to the Chief of Naval Operations once the current budget bill regarding Carrier Operations has run its course. We believe there are areas where we could more efficiently spend our money on, such as the advancement of the designs of the carriers themselves.

Sincerely,
Admiral William H. Standley
United States Navy
Chief of Naval Operations

I understand your point, to which I did concede. And while the atrocities committed by our nation in the Philippines and those committed by Italy in Ethiopia are different, I believe this to be a semantic difference. I also agree that we have the power to change the horrible actions of countries around the world through our influence, but I do not believe now is the correct time.

Diplomatic action against Italy now would be seen as a diplomatic attack. A declaration of sides, if you will. Perhaps if Europe wasn't so unstable I would be more inclined to side with those who wish for diplomatic action against Italy, and furthermore against all other atrocities committed in the name of imperialism, but with the world in its current state, such a stance could push the world closer to another catastrophe, something which we must avoid.

Italian Embargo Act:

Aye 4
Nay 5.

We're running away with Isolationism again, since we've had exactly one non-Isolationist vote. It's

Isolationist 7
Comintern 1.

Voting deadline shall be Friday, 10 PM CST (-6 GMT).

Also, if we want to authorize some new (minor) construction or change some techs, and Admiral Standley suggests, that can be introduced as a budget amendment, although once again we'd have to have two Senators agreeing before I'd allow official voting.
