Those two guys also are workaholics but also normal alcoholics.
It seems that they drink something in every chapter.
Must have been a good cleaner!
And the chair must have been very ugly.
One simply starts not breaking chairs because one could do it...
All good observations, Enewald. I hope I've made it clear that Sam has a bit of a problem with the drink. While I enjoy using the tried and true trappings of the noir novel in terms of habits, I have purposely caused Sam to drink heavily as part of his character. In part it may play into his problematic thinking process.
As for Otto, I'll admit he is acting unreasonably, but that too is somewhat as designed. I actually found it difficult writing from the perspective of one that doesn't consider free will. More on that below.
So Sam is going to work with Jasper for now. Seems like a odd couple, but they might both have some advantages from working together. Or did Sam put something in the glass to stop Jasper from following him…
A stronger and more powerful German henchman, I think that is bad news for Sam, but it shall be interesting to see what happens next.
Sam didn't drug him, but that's not a bad idea. I may use it later.
I like the partnership. Hopefully I am building two different men, both after the same thing but going at it in different ways. Again, more on that below.
Otto will definitely be trouble for Sam. That, I can assure you.
HULK SMASH... Well, what can I say, another smashing chapter sir!
And that is why.
Terrible pun, by the way.
A stinker.
Otto gets to be the ultimate heavy...if I want.
Actually, Otto here reminds me a bit of a certain Jasen Exeter...
Anyway, I really liked the description of the influence the (supposed) vampire has over Otto. Glamour (in its original meaning) seems an apt description.
So far, the relationship between Jasper and Sam seems rather onesided. Jasper seems mostly there for Sam to bounce ideas off, or to bring up hypotheses that Sam can shoot down. I wonder if there will be more reciprocity in the future (and no, I'm not counting the fact that Jasper is drinking Sam's Scotch).
And yes,
Enewald's right, Sam seems pretty much an alcoholic, with the other 1938 characters not very far behind.
Could be a rude surprise if a vampire ever tried to bite him - Sebastion might not be able to remain on his feet after that.
Nice catch on Exeter, Stuyvesant. I will readily admit that CatKnight's take on that character has colored my thoughts on how to write this one. I hope to have him a more reasoning type of person eventually, but he too will learn his way there. At first, I need to leave him somewhat brainless and ordered.
I'm pleased the hypnotism trance works. I do have an idea that vampires are able to control whom they choose, perhaps included with some blood mixing. I could describe it in the text, but I like leaving it open for interpretation. Suffice to say Otto is definitely in someone's power which I've understood can be called "glamouring" in certain vampire books. Interesting that you choose the word as well (unless you've read them.
)
As for the drink, as I said above, Sam is definitely an alcoholic. I make no bones about it. Having tread that ground with Sonny, it is familiar ground.
Not sure if a vamp will get that taste if they drink it, but if liquor does effect a vampire (which surely it must, right?) then yes, it would be a rude awakening.
You make a very good point regarding Jasper and Sam. While I do have more for Jasper to do in the future, thus far he has been more of a "foil" rather than an active participant. I must admit that in some of my planning for this episode, I actually forgot about Jasper for a small section at the start.
o I've had to weave him back in, much to my shame and embarrassment. With all that said, he plays an important role simply being Sam's foil and causing the hero to react. I'll work on fleshing him out more.
Poor Otto...next we'll see if he can push the right button when the bell rings...I hear the pellets are quite nice...
TheExecuter
Indeed...he is now controlled and under someone's power. I can't say who for the moment, but that just gives everyone a chance to guess.
To all - I was a little surprised there wasn't a little something mentioned in regards to the rather large name drop I provided. Nothing?
Working on the next bit and it involves the very same person Sam is on his way to see. I've had a devil of a time deciding on exactly who that is, but hopefully it'll work. The occupation was a given, but the actual person I've left open to do some research. It'll take a day or so to work it out so look towards the weekend for another update (it would take a miracle to get it up by Friday.)
Thanks for the comments.
