Coal
Coal is an ancient city, originally it was a small village at the base of the mountain whose name has been lost to time. The city did not become truly famous until Eöl Coamenel chose it as the site from which he would rule his Kingdom. Eöl had traveled around the entire continent in his first one hundred years, but the beauty of mountain rising out of the forest always stayed in his mind. When he united the elven lands under the Kingdom of Galadriel he chose the mountain that had stuck in his mind as the site for his capital, which he named Coal, a shortening of his own name. Using his powerful magic, Eöl created the Wellspring at the top of the mountain that flows even to this day. He then ordered the construction of his castle on the sight of the spring, and it could be seen for miles all around.
The castle was built in such a way that the flow of water could be controlled via a system of dams and openings under the castle, allowing for the defense of the citadel and irrigation of the lands below, as needed. Eöl also ordered he construction of the Temple of Light, later renamed the Temple of Light and Eöl in his honor. It was built at the base of the mountain so as to be closer to the Light.
Over the next millennium Coal developed into the hub of Galadriel. Just a few miles from the coast, a harbor was built shortly after the city was founded. Now it is the busiest port in all of Galadriel, exporting cash crops, potions, and elven wine by the boat load, as well as bringing in raw minerals for crafting. The Temple of Light and Eöl has expanded from little more than a monastery to the greatest cathedral to the Light in all the Empire. It is one of the most common sites for elves on pilgrimages to visit, and is currently run by Fëanáro Anárion. The city is truly a bastion of culture with a great library and amphitheater built into the mountain side.
The population of the city has steadily been increasing since its founding, ignoring minor drops or rises in population. While the city is not strictly divided into quarters based on class, a rough picture has occurred. The wealthy live in the houses closest to the top of the mountain, though mainly the aristocracy of the city, there are also several plantation, shipping, and fishing business owners who live near the top. The middle class, people such as captains, expert craftsmen, and priests, live at the center of the mountain. At the base live the lower classes, including farmers, blacksmith assistants, or dock workers. These quarters are not necessarily a division of the classes, as there are no formal districts, but simply the reality of living higher up the mountain being more expensive.
At the base of the mountain, in addition to the Temple of Light and Eöl is the Market of Coal. The Market of Coal is a bustling hub of activity, built along the road between the mountain and the port. This is where farmers sell their crops, craftsmen sell their crafts, and several other business deals occur. While some business owners prefer to have trade deals arranged in their mountainside villas, there is also a large building in the market that provides space for business to occur.
The city does not have a large wall, but the steep mountainside combined with the threat of water being redirected towards an invading army, prevent invasion. This threat is further mitigated by the fact that an invading army would either need to face the Coamenel Navy or march through forests that they do not know while being harassed by elves who have lived in the forest their entire lives. If the enemy can get to the city and have overcome the mountainside and redirected water, then they must breach the mountain top citadel to reach the castle.
The castle itself was built in the time of Eöl, making it one of the oldest structures in the city. The architecture of the castle focuses on being open to nature. Upon entering through the citadel, one would find themselves in an open air courtyard filled with trees and flowers, like a small forest on the top of the mountain. After that are the doors to the throne room, fifteen feet tall and half a foot thick, they are intimidating, yet beautiful. They are solid white with gold elven scripts dancing across them. Inside the throne room is a hall, stretching about 100 feet with elven tapestries on either side. Then there is a wide flight of steps up to the Throne of the Forest, a throne made out of a living tree, with the Wellspring flowing behind it.
