Victoria 3 - Dev Diary #55 - Achievements

16_9.jpg

Hello and welcome to yet another Victoria 3 development diary. Today we’re going to be talking about Achievements, and since I think absolutely everyone reading this already knows what an Achievement is, I’m not going to do the usual what-is-this-feature preface. But before I get to listing all the achievements that Victoria 3 will be releasing with, we do have something to announce in regards to achievements which will differ in Victoria 3 compared to earlier Paradox Grand Strategy Games, namely that Ironman and an unmodified checksum will no longer be required to unlock achievements.

That is to say, no matter what mods you have installed and whether you’re playing ironman or not, all of these achievements will be unlockable. There are a few game rules that disallow achievements, but since you could simply mod away that requirement if you wanted, not even this is a particularly hard rule. The reason for this change is simply that after quite a bit of discussion among the designers, we’ve decided that for Victoria 3 we want to emphasize access to achievements for everyone, even if that may end ‘devaluing’ the achievements in the eyes of some players.

Now then, with that out of the way and without further ado, I will get to listing, in no particular order, the 50 achievements that will be available in the release version of Victoria 3!

I know no one agrees with me because I already got massively downvoted for stating this before but I liked that you could only get achievements in ironman mode and I don't really see why it was changed. I know it could sometimes get annoying with rng etc. but overall it added to the challenge of needing to get it right. Let the red x -ing commence.
i will still probably play in ironman mode just out of sheer conditioning at this point. Theres nothing stopping u from doing runs in ironman and challenging yourself.

I agree with you!

Also to the people saying "just make your own challenges" why don't you? It bet it would be "challenging" to play without console commands or mods that make the game easier.

Well. I'm not a fan of this, but I sincerely hope you've added a game rule that is simply "disables achievements". I don't want to have achievements unlocked by accident when I'm messing around with the console or playing mods.

Depending on how this actually works out, this could be either a decent decision or one of the worst.

For people wondering, "why change what works":
  1. It doesn't work. Only about 20-30% of players even try ironman, judging by the easiest achievements. For the vast majority of players, they might not event exist.
  2. The new players, who are just climbing the learning curve, would benefit a lot from the little encouragement in the form of achievements . And they are the least likely to use ironman (unless they are masochists).
  3. Some people also can't play without mods. I'm talking accessibility and translations. Why should they miss out on it? (and yes, translations also change the checksum now )

The thing is.... why do you care what other people do with achievements? They are basically worthless aside from behind a way of directing your play.

The presence of achievements (iron-man or not) doesn't preclude people from setting their own goals.

I never get them as I never play iron-man and usually use ui mods, now I might care about them more than 0%.
Most of your UI mods shouldn't disable achievements in any paradox game.

If you're okay with people modding/console commanding their way to an achievement in a matter of minutes, why not just abolish them entirely and let players set their own challenges?
Almost every game out there with steam achievements allows you to "just play" and gain achievements, without any "no reloading" modes, why Paradox should be different?

Glad to hear the ironman requirement is gone.
If anything devaluates achievements it's Steam achievement unlocker tools, not people playing CK3 with Community Flavour Pack

Are you so sure? I remember walking through walls in Skyrim was pretty easy
The Bethesda games are the exception, not the rule.

That's why I said almost all.

It also raises a point; Victoria 3 is unlikely to get a console port in the way CK3 did if they go ahead with this unless that console port strips out the console commands.

Microsoft and Sony policy for years has been "No cheats without disabling achievements" It's actually what killed the era of button press cheats.

Probably doesn't matter to you or I, but it should be said.

It does work for the part of the player base that does like playing ironman and does like working for the achievements. Why can't the journal entries be encouragement? For that matter, why not just make more easy achievements? I'm fine with that. It would be better than getting rid of the altogether which is what this decision is akin to.
