Victoria 3 - Dev Diary #55 - Achievements

16_9.jpg

Hello and welcome to yet another Victoria 3 development diary. Today we’re going to be talking about Achievements, and since I think absolutely everyone reading this already knows what an Achievement is, I’m not going to do the usual what-is-this-feature preface. But before I get to listing all the achievements that Victoria 3 will be releasing with, we do have something to announce in regards to achievements which will differ in Victoria 3 compared to earlier Paradox Grand Strategy Games, namely that Ironman and an unmodified checksum will no longer be required to unlock achievements.

That is to say, no matter what mods you have installed and whether you’re playing ironman or not, all of these achievements will be unlockable. There are a few game rules that disallow achievements, but since you could simply mod away that requirement if you wanted, not even this is a particularly hard rule. The reason for this change is simply that after quite a bit of discussion among the designers, we’ve decided that for Victoria 3 we want to emphasize access to achievements for everyone, even if that may end ‘devaluing’ the achievements in the eyes of some players.

Now then, with that out of the way and without further ado, I will get to listing, in no particular order, the 50 achievements that will be available in the release version of Victoria 3!

i'm very glad for the achievements change since locking behind ironman was very questionable since people could already cheat achievements in ironman mode so it was pointless.

and i'm very thankful that vic3 achievements won't be as unhinged like eu4 achievements

seriously tho who is the sadistic psychopath that designed those RNG-heavy achievements and expect us to do it in ironman mode?
Wait for a couple of expansions and they'll add that stuff in

Either some of this achievements are really hard to get, or the game is really easy.

I mean, subjugate Great Britain as the Sikh Empire? That would be something extremely hard to achieve in Vic2.

It does work for the part of the player base that does like playing ironman and does like working for the achievements. Why can't the journal entries be encouragement? For that matter, why not just make more easy achievements? I'm fine with that. It would be better than getting rid of the altogether which is what this decision is akin to.
But ironman is still there. You can still do it. And honestly, *theatrical whisper* I don't think ironman is actually that much more work. Once I learn the game, I rarely feel the need to reload. And you can always have backup saves anyway. Lack of access to QoL mods is far more punishing.

And I agree, more easy achievos would be nice. And they could add some ironman-specific ones. Like, "Iron Chancellor" if you're playing Germany.

But achievements are more valuable than journal entries, right? They come with cool artwork and a platform where you can see the progress of others.
and I'm all for more people benefitting from them

I think it will depend on how easy it to "westernize" and how easy it is to take over India. Without it GB should become much weaker. The difficulty of that one will probably fluctuate with different updates

Some people care, some others don't, why change things and make it an issue for people who do care when the previous and new system don't really affect people who don't?
there are plenty of people who would be happy to go for achievements if they didn't require ironman because they don't like ironman. this allows those people to get achievements and aim for them without using a mode they don't like. you are still free to play on ironman and go for achievements - no one is hurt by this

By the way, there is an achievement for subjugating the USA as the Indians. Aren’t the Indians decentralized nations? I thought only centralized nations would be playable at release.

I think the point a lot of people who are pro this move are missing from a lot of people who are against, is that "a platform where you can see the progress of others" as a result of achievements is sort of moot if a lot of that progress could just have been made with no effort. Again, some people would say to that "well you could always use cheatengine anyway" but I believe tools like that are too much effort for a lot of the people who would potentially use console commands to do it if they were allowed to.

I’m torn on the allowing modded achievements. On one hand, I quite like the Ironman requirement because it feels more like an achievement, but then I might actually bother using mods which should be fun!

As someone who never plays ironman, because I simply don't care about achievements, this decision is baffling to me.

Although I don't care about achievements, I do respect people who play for them, who come up with innovative strategies to get them, who take the time and effort to unlock them. For me that's the whole point, bragging rights, a sense of accomplishing something that most players won't, compare yourself to thousands of others and know you're in the top 0.01% who made it. Again, I don't care, but it's something cool for people who do.

Now you've just removed that joy without adding anything for me. I still won't care about achievements and won't sink hundreds of hours to unlock a single one. But for hardcore players who simply like to extra challenge, their achievements will be compared to mine: a save scum, cheater and modder of the worst ilk. It's not fair.

With the looser rules for gaining achievements, will achievements be available in multiplayer? I personally play mostly small multiplayer games and would love to gain achievements with my friends!

Not that I expect the devs are likely to change their position given most people seem to like this change, but I just wanna explain why I, and I suspect at least a few other people, dislike making achievements not require Ironman.

For me, it doesn't have anything to do with "devaluing" the achievements. Okay I'll admit it's satisfying to unlock an achievement that very few other people have unlocked, but that's not what annoys me about non-Ironman achievements.

What annoys me in games where there are no restrictions on unlocking achievements, is how easy it is to accidentally rapidly unlock tons of achievements. This is especially problematic in games where mods and cheats are easily available, because as much as I enjoy playing with unbalanced cheaty mods every now and then, I don't want to unlock 90% of the game's achievements in the process.

If there were a way to re-lock achievements (never gonna happen because Valve), or if you had the ability to disable getting achievements for certain saves, I would be happy. Alternatively I wouldn't mind a purely in-game list of Ironman only achievements. That way you could have Ironman only achievements without spamming the Steam list with multiple copies of each achievement.

but I believe tools like that are too much effort for a lot of the people who would potentially use console commands to do it if they were allowed to.
when IR released we could use console commands in the starting lobby. You could get the world conquest achievement with pretty much one command. Only 0.4% of players have it.
Yes, some will cheat. There'll probably be a mod day one that gives you all achievements. We'll see how many will end up using it.
I still think the benefits outweighs the negatives/
