Victoria 3 - Dev Diary #55 - Achievements

16_9.jpg

Hello and welcome to yet another Victoria 3 development diary. Today we’re going to be talking about Achievements, and since I think absolutely everyone reading this already knows what an Achievement is, I’m not going to do the usual what-is-this-feature preface. But before I get to listing all the achievements that Victoria 3 will be releasing with, we do have something to announce in regards to achievements which will differ in Victoria 3 compared to earlier Paradox Grand Strategy Games, namely that Ironman and an unmodified checksum will no longer be required to unlock achievements.

That is to say, no matter what mods you have installed and whether you’re playing ironman or not, all of these achievements will be unlockable. There are a few game rules that disallow achievements, but since you could simply mod away that requirement if you wanted, not even this is a particularly hard rule. The reason for this change is simply that after quite a bit of discussion among the designers, we’ve decided that for Victoria 3 we want to emphasize access to achievements for everyone, even if that may end ‘devaluing’ the achievements in the eyes of some players.

Now then, with that out of the way and without further ado, I will get to listing, in no particular order, the 50 achievements that will be available in the release version of Victoria 3!

If you're okay with people modding/console commanding their way to an achievement in a matter of minutes, why not just abolish them entirely and let players set their own challenges?

Edit: 19 more dislikes until 69, I truly believe we can make it happen

Amazing achievements right here! Can't wait to get my hands on the game and get them all!
I have one single question, are you able to procure achievements in multiplayer now?

I hate the change to the achievement system. I am sure this is screaming into the void but doing this makes achievements worthless.

Maybe you could do a 2 track achievement system. One that tells you when you complete an achievement in your session no matter mods and one that only works in ironman.

Please do not do this change.

These are great achievements, I think they provide a great list of objectives for players to try and accomplish! I also support removing the Iron Man/modded requirement, too many times I've wanted to a do an achievement but haven't been willing to play vanilla for it.

Fortunately, having achievements does nothing to prevent you from setting your own challenges.

100% support the checksum decision. The only person that achievements matter to is the person that achieved them. If you want to cheapen your own achieves with god mode then more power to you. No one else's achieves matter.

While some achievement hunters (aka masochists) might dislike this change I think for the vast majority of the playerbase this is a great change. So many times I've missed achievements because I'm playing it with several mods and never bother rerunning it on ironman.

Also, for people rueing the 'dilution' of achievements, well, steam achievements can be unlocked with external programs anyways, so technically every achievement is moot. Which is kinda the point, they're worth depends on the eye of the beholder.
I disagree with this. Clearly very few people unlock achievements with external programs. You wouldn't have so many HOI4 or EU4 achievements with 0.1 or 0.2% of player unlocking otherwise.

So, my biggest cross-games pet peeve is gone with achievement changes (although would be VERY cool if you shared words with other teams and retroactively introduced it in other games), but I have another question now:

Will we be able to achieve console without additional hustle like we did before Imperator or it's the same here?

Will there be an easy option to turn achievements eligibility on and off in the new game menu? Id hate to get an achievement randomly while messing around with the game, be it console commands, mods or in other unintended ways.

Ironman and an unmodified checksum will no longer be required to unlock achievements.

Does this mean, that finally... finally you guys will stop putting access to the ingame console behind a launch option command line, that forces us to either play the entire game in permanent debug mode, or restart the game everytime I want to use the console, or use a freaking mod to access a basic game feature?

Please tell me you did this because of that! Ever since Imperator and CK3 did this to prevent pre-game cheating for easy achievements it's been a pain in the rear end. Please, tell me this means that Victoria 3 won't have the same unreasonable restrictions for the console.

I know no one agrees with me because I already got massively downvoted for stating this before but I liked that you could only get achievements in ironman mode and I don't really see why it was changed. I know it could sometimes get annoying with rng etc. but overall it added to the challenge of needing to get it right. Let the red x -ing commence.
