EU4's message settings are pretty good. But there are still several things that I wish had message settings, but which don't have them (which is why I don't dare ever play at max speed).
There are some other suggestion threads suggesting adding more message settings, but most of them are old and inactive and are about individual messages. This intent of this suggestion is to list all the message settings that we would like to have added to the game.
Ideas for what events should have message settings (feel free to suggest more and I'll add them to the list):
  • An alert appears (preferably a separate setting for each alert. This doesn't necessarily require a popup; an option to auto-pause would be enough)
  • We get a diplomatic request (a separate setting for each request. Most importantly, call to arms. There is currently an option to display this as an alert or a popup, but no option to auto-pause)
  • A unit finishes recruitment
  • A new age starts (there is currently a popup, but no option to auto-pause)
  • A cooldown expires, for example, the cooldowns to:
    • send a diplomat to a specific country
    • change national focus
    • build spy network in a country that caught our spy
    • call diet (there should also be an alert for not having an active diet mission)
  • A warning against us expires
  • Our warning against another country expires
  • A spy network becomes large enough to do an espionage action (a separate message setting for each action)
  • Rebel-related messages (e.g. rebels spawned, rebels entered country, rebels captured province) when they happen to an ally
  • Start of every month (lots of things happen at the start of the month, and it might not be possible to have message settings for all of them, so it would be convenient to auto-pause every month)
  • An institution has become present in a province
  • Enemy army has emerged from FoW
  • Enemy army has started moving

I would also suggest:
- enemy army has emerged from FoW
- enemy army has started moving
I agree this would be useful, but some people might want these messages for some enemy armies, but not others. So maybe there could be an option to show the message only for enemy armies that are e.g. close to your own armies or land. Or maybe an option to mark an enemy army as special interest an show messages only for it.

Possibly, but it might be getting a bit too complicated and goes beyond of triggering a message on certain conditions.
