CK3 Dev Diary #66 - A Fresh Coat of Paint
Greetings!

The sun is out, and we’ve all been enjoying pristine Azure skies during the Swedish midsummer celebrations. Or, well, a few of us have! Some members of the team got to enjoy a massive downpour of rain (which is customary, to be fair), and others even got to experience a refreshing storm of hail. Speaking of Azure, we’re releasing another small patch today which addresses a handful of issues (most notably some stability concerns):
  • Fixed unpause issues in multiplayer if choosing to continue in single player after network out of sync on 1.4.2
  • Fixed crash on save and progressive dynasty and title coat of arms disappearing
  • Fixed UI lists refresh, allowing to access characters for some interactions when they should not be available (i.e.: you could grant vassal to your liege characters from other realms)
  • Fixed crash happening after starting a fort assault during a crusade on a long playthrough save on 1.4.2

Beginning next week a majority of the team will be going on summer vacation, which means that it’ll be mostly deserted for the next five weeks. In practice this means that the next few Dev Diaries won’t be as meaty as the ones that came before. You can think of them more as teasers than proper Dev Diaries. When we’re back we’ll of course resume having more substantial ones!

With that being said, we don’t want to leave you empty handed. Summer vacation doesn’t start until next week after all. Some of you might have noticed in the previous Dev Diary that we had a small square at the top of the window when creating a hybrid or a divergent culture, showing a colour. This is of course a preview of the colour your new culture will have when it’s created. Clicking it allows you to change and set the colour of your culture exactly as you want it!

But we didn’t stop there! We added this new and wonderful tool in a couple of other places as well. As when creating a culture, we've added it for creating a new faith too.

You'll also be able to change the colour when customizing a title. No longer will you have to settle on the colour the game picks for you when creating a custom kingdom or empire! Especially when that colour turns out to be neon pink... You can edit the colour for any title you hold or is held by your vassals, similar to how you are allowed to edit the name & adjective for titles in your realm. Yes, this means that you can make your vassal lands sport a cavalcade of colour if you so desire!

That's it for today, I'm afraid. While this might be a fairly small addition in the grand scheme of things, we do think it’s a nice and flavourful tool that lets you customize your experience more than before!

Neon Pink.... you read my mind. I'm currently playing Pagan and it's neon pink. That does not make any sense. Once this is out, I'll make it white or yellow.

Will this be a free feature, or is it a part of Royal Court?
Free! We tend to add these type of QoL features as a part of a patch.
Though you cannot create cultures without Royal Court, so picking a colour for cultures is obviously not gonna be a thing without the DLC.

When diverging or hybridizing cultures, would the AI choose a colour similar to the mother culture(s)'s, maybe even a mix or median of the two if a hybrid?

Are we ever going to get custom titles like Emperor of the Mercian Empire becoming Archduke of The Mercian Archduchy? It was teased last game but… yeah. Oh and societies I liked societies.

The AI doesn't really pick a colour per se. It'll just use the default chosen on culture creation. The default colour, however, tends to be somewhat similar to the original culture, though there is a random factor involved.

I am glad that we're getting this colour picker, minor as it is in terms of news.

That's a shame. If I'm culture head it'd be nice to be able to adjust the culture colour on the fly, rather than being stuck with the basic one, and the same goes for adjusting just the colour of your faith without reforming or forming a new one. Sometimes you just want to contrast with the neighbours so you can see easily what's converted and what isn't.
Again, that's a good suggestion! Not sure of any technical limitations, but perhaps something for us to look at, even if I can't promise anything.
Being able to enter RGB values is *more* valuable to me than picking from a grid like that, as I've not got good colour vision, but I know the RGB values for the colours I want to use, and can so pick them more accurately with the numbers rather than the square.

At least in principle all entering the values would have to do would be to force the picker to the right point.

Now, as a thought... If I enter a really dark value for my culture/title/religion colour, will the system be clever enough to put the relevant labels over it in *white* instead of black?

Say I enter #202020 as the colour (either directly or through messing with the sliders) - with black text this might be practically invisible. With white text though, it'd show up fine.

And whilst you're reworking things, is there any way that you could make it so adding new religious symbols is possible without breaking checksum?

And does that also mean some kind colour mixing going on for hybrids? Or it'll do the same technique of defaulting to something similar to either of the parent cultures' colours, and not so to speak a "mix/intermedier" of them?

I hope this system is eventually added to coat of arms customisation - I can't say I'm a fan of the current randomisation selection.

Not for me. 50 shades of pink here I c ome.

And I can finally customize the duchies of a new kingdom in similar colours. I made once a Kingdom out of Bavarian and Hungarian regions and wished to colourize the duchies to the kingdoms colour.

Just waiting for the lunatic HRE emperor to change the colors of all titles in the realm to a full rainbow of colors to really mess with my map. ;)
