Dev Diary #178 - A Vision in Gold

Crown-wearing kings and regalia-bearing queens,

As you read these very words, you might - by claim of blood or right of conquest - be happily nesting in a Crusader Kings III throne. Perhaps you’re just about to become king, just about to plop one of our lovingly rendered crowns on your most worthy head. Congratulations! That’s one heck of a moment to celebrate.

Enter: the Coronation Activity. This first, and very likely most iconic, sacral moment of kingship is the centerpiece of our laser-focused new event pack. Our fans have long yearned to see this ceremony realized in digital cathedrals and in virtual flesh. I, humble Brother Jason of the design scriptorium, am here to give you a sense of the kingly activity to come.

[Spoilers, I guess?]

Vision

With this event pack, we tried something a little different from the formula employed in Wandering Nobles, Wards & Wardens and Friends & Foes: where these prior event packs scattered little tasty flavor treats throughout the game, Coronations is instead one single, discrete bundle of highly visible and mechanically impactful content. You will not have to search it out. This DLC presents itself to you, in fanfare and anticipation, the moment… you die. Or, well, the moment you graduate to kingship. Either one is good.

So, yes, this DLC is focused squarely on the beginning of a new reign, on your initial years as a sovereign. They’re often dramatic years, aren’t they? With factions, claimants, new friends, councillors and rivals, new goals to set, and new boundaries to gaze upon. Your ruler’s Coronation won’t take place in isolation from these fresh horrors and newfound delights, no: our intent is that the Activity helps them situate themselves in their new position. It should highlight your new foes and help you identify the sources of your new character’s strength. By holding a Coronation, you might hope to - without the strain of war - address the teething problems of new rule that we all know well (factions, claimants, etc). This might end, however, in your coronation being a venue for your humiliation and, even, deposition. Don’t fear, though. Such a debacle would require a few significant political miscalculations on your part.

image_02.png

[These vassals don’t seem to like me very much]

Conversely, if your succession is smooth as butter on warm toast, then Coronations become a fine exercise in patting yourself on the back. A beloved, highly capable ruler has every right to pull through with fresh modifiers, currencies and incentives in hand!

A soon-to-come developer diary will dig deeper into the mechanics of the Coronation Activity and the Oaths on offer. What I present to you now is a top-level overview.

The Coronation Activity

Coronations are a new Activity type available to Kings and Emperors. They are accompanied by a new Realm Law, which states whether your ruler is Crowned or Uncrowned. While Uncrowned, you suffer Opinion and Legitimacy maluses; the only way to become Crowned is to host a Coronation. Both the Activity and the new laws are DLC-only content, and will not affect players who don’t own this event pack.

image_03.png

[Soon, soon you will be crowned and these modifiers will be history…]

You may only host a Coronation when first becoming a King or Emperor: thus, a Coronation host must either be a new heir succeeding to the throne, or a ruler who has just increased their title tier. The majority of CK sovereigns will only ever hold one Coronation, but this DLC strongly incentivizes everyone king-tier and above to host a Coronation.

The Coronation Activity brings together courtiers, vassals and neighboring rulers to witness the creation of a new sovereign, to socialize, and to politic frenetically in the shadows. Equipped with an array of Intents for hosts and attending characters, and with a wide range of events, Coronation is a relatively reliable source of Legitimacy, Opinion and Prestige (for the host), but can be employed towards many other ends as well.

image_04.png

[Why thank you, pointy hat man]

Mechanically, the Coronation Activity focuses on replayability, on reactivity to your current situation, and on agency for both the attendees and host. Through time and across space, coronation ceremonies tended to hit many of the same beats, to use many of the same ideas and phrases, but the context of their words were ever-changing, and we designed with that mutability in mind. These moments were never merely ceremonial. They were always also political.

image_05.png

[Plenty of opportunities for the new sovereign to get to know their vassals]

Our guiding principle for Coronation flavor was to create content that feels truly regal, truly historic, worthy of Charlemagne, Chinggis, and mighty Baldwin of the great and righteous Latin Empire (is it Splintered Crusade o’clock?). Indeed, because Coronations can only be held by king and emperor-tier rulers… if someone’s disrespecting a host at their own Coronation, that someone is going to have a damn good reason, and is very likely going to pay dearly for their poor manners.

The main regional flavor focuses of this DLC are Christian and Western European. Therein are found the most widely-recognized symbols of medieval coronation, and furthermore - the rites of coronation across Christendom, though varied in order and form, were honestly quite surprising to me in their relative uniformity. That’s not to say there aren't triggered events and flavor for different faiths and government types! These are just a little harder to spot than our orbus cruciger activity icon.

Magnificence

As I mentioned, Coronations can either be an absolute cakewalk or a rough ride, based on the competence of your ruler, the wealth at your disposal, and the opinion of your attendees. Magnificence, the measure of a Coronation’s success, is the main metric we use to determine how troubled and unflattering your Coronation is becoming - or how majestic and glorious! It’s drawn from the Coronation’s setup, from the actions of the host, and the maneuvering of the most significant friendly and hostile attendees.

All I’ll say right now is… you probably don’t want to skimp on the Activity Options, unless you really have to.

image_06.png

[Keep things feeling magnificent and you won’t be disappointed]

Host & Guest Interplay

A King is made by the assent of the church, of his nobles, and I guess the common people. Coronations aim to highlight all these relationships, and give both host and guest the means to explore them. To aid in this, we have added a widget to the Coronation Activity interface to help you track the most powerful Supporters (characters who like you, the Host) and Detractors (jerks) at your Coronation. These groupings don’t mean anything beyond the Activity, but have a significant impact on its outcomes.

image_07.png

[Major Supporters and Detractors are shown on the right. These are the attendees best able to affect a Coronation’s successfulness]

Attendees may use their Intents to support the new sovereign, to undermine the Coronation, or - most often - to push forward their own interests. Hosts, meanwhile, use Intents mainly to focus on one group of attendees over another, and manage the members of that group.

Imperial Anointment

The Coronation Activity can be held as a regular old Coronation, or a more special type: Anointment.

Only available to emperor-tier rulers of appropriate faiths, Anointment is a grander ceremony that features your Head of Faith as crowning officiant. It must be held at a Holy Site, and has some additional requirements which weed out sinners and illegitimate sovereigns. Anointment offers additional bonuses, particularly where Legitimacy and the Opinion of others are concerned.

image_08.png

[Behold: the Pope oiling you up]

Oaths

Though, as I’ve said earlier, the body of this DLC is firmly rooted in the early reign, its arms reach out across your ruler’s years on the throne. During Coronations, you will be called upon to select an Oath, a timed Decision that is in essence an objective for your rule. Sometimes, the transition from one PC to another can dull a player’s sense of purpose and stagger the momentum of their game. Committing your new ruler to an Oath sets you on a new path, and may serve to get things rolling again!

More info to come on Oaths soon.

Bye, For Now!

I bid you farewell, friends, kings, queens, and gamers. Until next I may write of crowns and royal heads and downwards, placing-type motions of the hands.

If you have any thoughts or ideas about Coronations in CK3, do sound off in the comments!

3. Why not just a hot-generated list populated from former rulers' regnal names?
  • It could work just like the current "ancestor button" in the Name Change popup.
  • The player could choose from any former ruler's regnal name or they could enter a text string to choose their own.
  • Would that be bad/difficult/unworkable?
Yeah I thought that the regnal name system would be the same as when you name your child. Is it really impossible to just put a text box to write your reign name? Does the way the game is coded prevent that from working?

This is cool. Some questions.

1.) will Islamic realms have the flavour all about the Bayʿah? Oaths as you mentioned seem fitting here.

2.) how different will Indian rulers be from Europeans? As both are feudal in game, even with auh coming up. I really hope that there will be some unique stuff here that fits South Asia.

Some thoughts:
1. I hope we will see some unique content for non-Christian rulers too. Perhaps this ceremony could be called an enthronement.
For example, Islamic rulers had to ascend the throne and get hommage by their vassals as soon as possible, otherwise their brothers might do something...
Nomads had interesting Raising of the Khan ceremony too.
And ofc Asian rulers must get some special ceremonies after All Under Heaven release.

2. It would be great to see some special Anointment for HRE. True Kaiser must be crowned by the Pope in Rome.

What are the penalties for Uncrowned 2 and 3, and what are the requirements for changing to them? Are they stronger or milder than Uncrowned 1, because it doesn't look too harsh for a temporary penalty.

Can factions/hooks/councils/Heads of Faith affect these laws or will players just immediately rush Uncrowned 3 and then never worry about that law, or getting coronated, ever again?

Not gonna lie, this first Dev Diary was very underwhelming and looking at the dev answers in the comments didn't help either.

I understand that this is a smaller DLC that is coming before a larger one, but it feels so disconnected. It's another western european-centric dlc, that only really fit France and England and, maybe, Germany. And hey, I love playing in those regions! But when you have such an interesting mechanic not being connected to the rest of the map (Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, etc...).

I hope I'm wrong and the next DDs clear all my doubts out, but rn CK3 (despite all my love for the game, and respect for the development team) is turning out to be a game that can't really deliver all that it promised. Long hiatuses without any communication, ignored community suggestions, mechanics that aren't connected between DLCs, regions blatantly ignored, mechanics that were half baked and abandoned, older DLCs that have been left to rot since their launch...

Lots of people in the community have been talking of a sort of Custodian Team and while I understand that this may be a complex thing to implement, I feel that it would help maintaining the game alive and connected and more complex.

And again, I deeply love this game, and respected the team. I'm excited for the new releases and for new content you all are producing, but it would be nice if the community was listened more times.

We looked into regnal names, but it was hard to make it feel natural. Making a good list that felt like it made sense was... difficult, when I prototyped it.

I don't recall if we added something like this for oaths or not. I don't think so.

Yes sir. Go and ruin it, be the drunk awkward neighbor you always wanted to be.

Cool idea, but it was a huge undertaking to make it work with how the Coronation has been set up.

Not entirely decided yet.

No plans as of right now.
Wouldn´t it be natural if you could choose a regnal name from a list of names of previous kings of the same title?

This entire chapter of DLCs is focused around the Eastern edge of the map, having a single event pack DLC that's more western European-focused isn't the end of the world.

I remember in TV tropes Mahabharat (2013) kings are coronated and performed Abhisheka ritual. I don't know how real Medieval Indians were coronated though. But perhaps some of them may want to be more epic?

Edit: I find this page.

Will the uncrowned French kings have the title of Dauphin?

Will there be official coronation sites such as Canterbury for English kings and Reims for French kings? If you don't coronate there then you will miss out on certain bonuses.

It would be cool if anointment had a specific flavour for the Holy Roman Emperor as he was the only true emperor recognized by the church. Or if it could only be granted by the pope if he liked you enough

Some minor things, but there's no major changes for first-time crowners, as far as I recall.

We will talk about them next week. But they are only available as a part of a Coronation.

There could also be an option to have vassals renew their oaths after X amount of years. Instead of being an activity, it could be a button similar to the hold court button and done on a one to one basis as vassals start to arrive to visit you.

Is there any mechanism for crowning an heir during a ruler’s lifetime? England crowned Henry the Young King during Henry II’s reign and almost all of the early Capetians crowned their heirs during their lifetime, leading to two who were crowned but predeceased their fathers. Other countries in medieval Europe also played around with the idea.
We considered adding it as an alternative, or to crown a co-monarch, but chose not to go for it as it would take a significant amount of time to add. A lot of events would have to be changed around, and the way the activity is set up.

Can a coronation ceremony be held outside of your realm's borders? For example some Emperors of HRE would go to Rome to be crowned which is owned by Papal State.
Anointments can be held in the Head of Faith's realm in certain circumstances, like for the HRE.
Will there be flavor for certain countries that have a special relationship with coronation or anointment? I'm thinking in particular of France, where the King is anointed in Reims (which does not seem possible in game, since he is not Emperor), and the Holy Roman Empire, which combines the coronation for King of the Romans and the anointment in Rome for the Emperor.
There will be some bonuses for holding it in areas that have had coronations before (see Aachen, Reims, Milan, etc.). But nothing besides that, as far as I recall.

Do Catholic Hegemons have to be Anointed, or is it just emperors?
I mean, with the release of Coronations we won't have hegemons yet, but it would be for both emperors and hegemons.

Why didn't you used Royal Court 3d room for coronation? Did you forgot that dlc?
No, it's because it simply ruined the flow of the activity, and you don't necessarily hold the activity in your capital in your court. E.g. maybe you are holding it in Reims as a French King. Making two separate solutions for every ceremony event in case you are in your capital or not would take a significant amount of time, and only doing it for one event would be weird when a new screen would suddenly pop up all of a sudden.

One more question.

If I am crowned King of Poland and conquer Pomerania and create the title of Kingdom of Pomerania do I get to/have to go through Coronation activity again?
No. You will have to hold a new Coronation if you lose your kingdom titles, and you can hold an anointment after holding a coronation and then proceeding to get an empire title.

Will the uncrowned French kings have the title of Dauphin?

Will there be official coronation sites such as Canterbury for English kings and Reims for French kings? If you don't coronate there then you will miss out on certain bonuses.
We did not change any titles for the DLC. The whole Dauphin/Dauphinate doesn't really happen until quite late in our timeline (over 150 years after our latest start date), but we did look at alternatives for adding the King of the Romans for the HRE, but chose not to do it as we did not find any great solutions for adding it.

You can own or not own a physical crown in the game. You show a crown on the head even if you dont own a crown. This problem is exacerbated in the DLC. It is literally a coronation and you dont need a crown and you show a crown on the head already. This is so sloppy not immersive.

There would actually be a reason to start a war if someone else had your crown. Or commision a new crown with less successful coronation. The gameplay option were huge and you totally missed it.

Maybe to make things less intrusive code-wise, they could be included as trait-like icons or even modifiers.

Alas, maybe next time...
Managing succession is also an important part of gameplay though.
