Nice naval battle. A shame that the money didn't worked with the japanese.

All British wars must start with a defeat.

...despite bad prospects in Europe the two (Marine) divisions mentioned were off to Asia. Along with them:
3 Squadrons of Tactical bombers,
2 squadron of Escorts (those wonderful Havilland Mosquitoes) and
4 Squadrons of Interceptors
are sent along (Mandalay got level 10 air base and radar). Godspeed and Hals und Beinbruch!
those appear to be decent reinforcements. however, will they be enough? :)

excellent! ! !

"Hals und Beinbruch!" ? ? ?

We'll see what they can do. They are state of the art, but I need more boots on the ground too. I am a bit pleased that my long term plan for a big air base in the Mandalay jungle did pay off. Or, Japan might take it and then I am less pleased.

"Hals und Beinbruch" was aimed at Adenauer, and his German boys. It means "Break neck and leg(s)", similar phrase to "Break a leg".

nice green line...
Good update..

That line is plainly not so ok from a British Perspective. Certainly as it seems as it got a Thin Red Line at the other end of the field.

Welcome! :) The battle was really epic and actually it felt ok to loose that much as USA has lost (up through May, I am a bit ahead) a handful of carriers too (Enterprise is among those lost, the rest was crap). My point is that US still got 14 carriers and IJN got 4 or 5 left, as UK. So I think it will be a “Japan First” decision. If not for else, it would be challenging to see the USSR get a bit stronger too.

That I didn’t get Japan into the allied camp with my 9% success was of course a drawback as my idea was to make money and friends. I really was surprised that they considered accepting my offer. Anyway, it makes a good game fighting them too.

hopefully the jungle wont kill ya! :p

Actually I barely got a screening force in the jungle, and no elite troops. I have seen Japanese mountain troops in their line so there are more than bugs and jungle that might kill me. :)

Woot! So the evil Japanese imperialists launched an all-out war on you? The suckers! The US naval figures you mentioned make it seem like a really bad decision from the Japanese. :D 20 carriers vs 5, that's not what I would consider smart.

Oh and as for the European front... nice move of you to free a democratic Germany! :) Now you only need to get De Gaulle into power in France, have him join you and Adenauer in the "European Coal, Steel and Anticommunism Community" and we'll have a new Europe ten years ahead of time. Unless the Reds overrun you and spoil the game.

BTW are there still Wehrmacht troops in the fight in the Balcans? Are their surrender events for GER in case FRG or GDR are set free?

And is there a chance that uncle Joe Stalin will counter your Adenauer move by setting the GDR free and having them raise troops of their own? That wouldn't be so cool. (Although I think their leaders suck.)

Also, what happens if you and 'your' Germans push the Soviets out of eastern Germany? Does the liberated land go to Britain, or the Bundesrepublik?

That was a false move of the Emperor, in more than one sense of the word. I still can't get over that they had the choice to join the allies but didn't. Instead 180 degrees the opposite, making a successful Pearl Harbour type attack on the Royal Navy. Ok Japan, so far, so good... so what!

Actually I haven’t checked the France Government out. But as they were not totally defeated in the colonies they lived on through German occupation. With the royal creation of Germany, France and BeNeLux got back their old possessions (Luxemburg were already created, but that does not matter). The reds, the reds… They don’t make any fast progress but they do advance. UK were outside Warsaw when we clashed with the, now we are outside Berlin. Then again, researching two Land Doctrines did stop the advance of the USSR in most places.

In theory perhaps. They got most of Eastern Germany, with the notable exception of Berlin. Perhaps I could enter game as USSR and just check if they can do it. They might benefit from it, but I don’t know.

It goes to Germany as I have ceded all provinces at the front to Germany. I could of course do an amphibious assault somewhere in order to make a UK-beachhead.

Thanks a lot. The war correspondence is listening if you want a report from some special theatre (part of).

Summer 1942: A build up before the Storm?

Not much happens during the summer. Early summer USSR declares war on Japan. that is a good thing, but I can’t see that they will commence any major operations against each other at the moment. USSR drives away the defence from Prague from time to time, but they are never able to take the city before new defenders pour into the kettle. The fighting there is kind of attritional, but we can take it as long as the rest of the theatre is stable.

Some minor skirmishes with the IJN ends with at sunk Transport flotilla (empty) for the RN and some damages made mostly on capital ships. The carriers are never out of harbour together during these months, some are always on repair.

The IJN loses during a months time, end of June to end of July these ships in combat against the RN:

IJN Yamashiro(BB)
IJN Nagato(BB)
IJN Haguro(CA)
IJN Izumo(CA)
IJN Furutaka(CA)
IJN Nachi(CA)
1 Sensuikantai(SS)
19 Yuso Sentai(TP)

The odds are clearly against Japan. They have 3 Carriers left against RN’s 5, among the IJN ships are the formidable Zuikaku. The Japanese carriers are grouped together and have frequently clashed with the RN. Almost all the losses taken by the IJN have been ships grouped together with the carriers. The USN is down to 12 Carriers, but they don't seem all that distressed by that fact.

Venezuela joined the allies, which is a good thing as we monopolise the oil market even more by that. Not that it hurts the USSR, but the Japanese should be in trouble when it comes to oil as even the Netherlands has kept their colonies in Asia.

USA decided to declare war upon Communist China during the summer. It will not affect the war at all. Perhaps Communist China will get closer to the USSR, especially as both of USSR’s enemies Japan and the allies are at war with named Communist China

The Summer Operation 1942: Viper’s Tail
Midnight the 7 July 1942 elements of the 8th Indian Army assaulted Thom Buri in Siam with support of the RN. The province was almost not defended, most of the troops seen earlier had been sent against Gen. Slim’s Corps in the Mandalay. The assaulting force consisted of King’s Own Royal Border Regiment (KORB) & King’s Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB) forming the KO Division. The rest of the Corps was the Tamil Marine division’s I & II, an answer from the South of the empires crown to the more mountain aligned elite Ghurkha units.

These divisions had now Bangkok and the peninsula in the south on a fork. They swiftly advanced into the jungle and cut of the Siamese and Japanese units on the Peninsula.

When contact was made with the enemy the units defending North of Singapore attacked the Japanese together with the units who had advanced through the jungle.

The Final Assault was made by 3 Marine Divisions and one Army Division

Surrounded in the jungle without supply the Japanese could only stand their ground against one assault, the second assault were a success and the Japanese Corps HQ were promptly shipped of to an unknown destination.

A new update will follow soon, perhaps with more action. Beware!

Good job in Malaya.

no doubt, Japan is in trouble.

those officers will enjoy better food than what the jungle offers...

Nothing New on the Mandalay Front: Retreat... Again

At the large Mandalay base, late October, huts burning all around

Lt. General Tedder, the local Air Commander, took a final tour through the large air base, his home in Mandalay for some months now. The base had been in excellent condition when he arrived, actually it even had had a rudimentary radar station for his Hawker Typhoons to use too. The based had been built before the war, if a conflict would arise in the area. The enemy had been presumed to be Japan. Everything correct. Still he was about to leave the base and follow the retreat out into the wilderness. He saw the last squadron of the 400 Bristol Buckingham taking off for Calcutta. The Mosquitos would follow them there. Of course, where else.

2WWtedder.jpg

Arthur Tedder at a briefing in Hong Kong some days later

His command over 1000 airplanes was finally over. He himself would be stationed in Singapore or Hong Kong, far from the front; and away from the smell of usefulness, coming from being grouped with front line infantry. The last thing he saw when he left the base was the squadron of Bristol Buckinghams, bombing their own Runway.

The situation late October

A week later: a usual pun amongst the troops in the Mountainous jungle North of the abandoned Mandalay base:

– What ya think bout our chance’ to escape out of this bloody mess alive?
– General’ Slim I would say.

The general of the front, William Slim had heard it before. Actually it was partly honouring that the boys still could joke about their situation. He knew that by the Coast two divisions had unloaded and at least one were seeking their way through the jungle up to the position he had taken on a ridge. It was mountain-trained units that would arrive, Ghurkhas.

General William Slim, about to take of for Mandalay, still confident

From what he had heard from the Japanese they had captured, he and his boys were severely outnumbered. About 30 divisions were under Japanese command in the jungle or its surroundings, he could not stand a chance against them in the long run, especially as his air cover were operating from afar. He spitted towards the sun as he went into the mess tent for a tonic, another one that is. On the BBC he heard that the Philippines had been annexed by Japan earlier the week, "give me two".

Things looking back - time to face the music. Nice scene at the beginning, quite evocative image planes bombing their own runway.

Wow - I love it - usually playing as the U.K. is kind of a cakewalk, but getting into a war with the soviets has turned that completely around hasn't it - a major naval and amphibious war in the far east, and a major land war in Europe - I wish I could do so well.
