Welcome to my newest project which asks 3 questions:
What if Stresemann wasn't ill and died in 1929? - What if Wilhelm Marx won the elections of 1925 against Hindenburg? - What if Hitler was not spared by the justice?
The young Weimar Republic had the worst start a new democracy could have. Crippled by the Versailles Treaty, the leftist brother fight and rightist coup attempts, the republic got no time to rest during its first years. As the hated French took over the Ruhr in 1923, the government Cuno paid the worker's loan to support a passive resistance. This caused a hyperinflation, with many German people losing their savings within weeks. In this precarious situation, Gustav Stresemann was appointed as new Chancellor by Friedrich Ebert. He had to act quickly as the Weimar Republic seemed to collapse as Communists and National Socialists both rallied the people to revolt, given promises by the army of support. In November 1923 Hitler tried to imitate Mussolini's march to Rome but barely was stopped by von Seekt's just as revolting communists in Saxony. He ended the expensive Ruhrkampf and stabilised the currency. The Weimar Republic finally could recover and the later so-called golden twenties began. Wages grew and cultural life flourished. It was the time of rapid scientific and technical advance. In 1925 Wilhelm Marx won the presidential election in a close vote against militarist Paul von Hindenburg. Together with the French foreign minister Aristide Briand, Stresemann managed to break through Germany's political isolation and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He recognized that a European collaboration is essential for peace and prosperity.
All achieved seemed to be in danger as the New York Stock Exchange crashed in Oktober 1929. After the cabinet of Heinrich Brüning broke apart about the question how to solve the crisis Marx appointed Stresemann as chancellor again. Stresemann knew that he only can alleviate the crisis if the countries abroad will cooperate. To prevent an unstable parliament he tried to avoid new elections as long as possible. In the regular 1932 elections, the democratic parties lost many seats but kept a quite narrow majority. With state interventions, Stresemann managed to bridge the worst effects on the German economy. At the same time, he negotiated with Briand about the aftermath of the Versailles Treaty and achieved that France cleared the Rhineland much earlier than planned. This has given him respect within Germany and abroad and further plans for the initiation of a European League are already in the drawer. But as long as strengthened nationalists and communists are poisoning the public opinion many people only will see the disadvantages in this. The enemies of the republic are just waiting for the mood to tip. Every step is to take more than carefully. Can Germany be saved by Stresemann once again or will the Extremists crow over the republic?

Germany, March 1933. Now the world economic crisis is almost 4 years ago, mass unemployment and a great depression endanger the German Republic. One decade after the year of crises (1923) Stresemann has to assert himself against the extremists once more. But this time the Republic is not alone. The prospering common policy of Stresemann and Aristide Briand until 1932 resulted in a cordial relationship which offers new options in german-french history. The extremists, however, are still fighting against the policy of appeasement. Hitler, who was expelled by a new law of Marx in 1926, agitates from Austria and is funding Goering and his NSDAP, which is getting more and more threatening. On the other side, Thaelmann and his KPD are still just waiting for the moment to start their fight but they are still too weak to take the first step. Can democracy prevail?
