HOBYO:

Also known as the Ajuuraan sultanate, this was a combination state of sorts, and dominated their weaker neighbor to the south, Mogadishu. The Ajuuraan tribe ruled from the Ogaden, and exacted tribute from the coastal cities, who made an absolute killing off of trade.
The Ajuuraan were on-again off-again allies of Adal, although this was more from national and religious solidarity than a mutual interest in defeating Ethiopia. Hobyo's interests lay to the south, specifically in expanding their influence into the Zenj, especially Brava, who endured their machinations and attacks well into the 16th century.

ADAL:

Following the rise of Ahmad Gran, the capital of Adal moved to Harer, where Ahmad struck west into Ethiopia, occupying much of Amhara until a joint Portugese/Ethiopian army defeated and killed the Imam in battle, and shattered the power of Adal. Following this defeat, the sultanate broke up, with the north coast accepting Ottoman protection, and the south Omani suzerainty. In the end, it would be the Oromo who would destroy the last remains of Harer.

edit: Ogaden was the capital of Hobyo, not a colony of Adal ;), also Adal didn't own Dawaro in 1419, it was a vassal of Ethiopia.

It does need some kind of event giving the north coast to the Ottomans after the defeat by Portugal, then getting vassalized by the Omanis.

Hobyo also fell into the Omani sphere of influence, though I'm not sure if I should represent this by inheritance or vassalization...

We need some sort of Oromo revolter, and a nice invasion by the Oromo (or Galla) taking quite a bit of a chunk out of everyone, especially Kefa and Harer.

Well my first comment and probably only one for a bit, is that I'm not so sure about having an Oromo nation. I mean its true that they did migrate in the region and take things over...but when it first comes into existence, their nation is about as worthy of inclusion as the native nations of North America. And perhaps I'm wrong, as its been a bit since I looked into this...but did they really form a large independent nation? It always seemed to me that they kind of just took over what was in their way...so like a culture change?

Should the taxvalues in this area be increased? IIRC there are mostly just 1, and that is to low to support a somewhat playable state, especially if we divide it between Adal and Hobyo. Perhaps the more important of the provinces should be raised to atleast 3, and the rest to 2?

While Somalia produces some valuable crops, it's pretty marginal agricultural land. The more important areas like around Zeila and Mogadishu should maybe be 3 or 4, but the rest 2 or 1.

Shouldn't Adal be able to see the land on the other side of the Red Sea? I also vote for giving them Ahmed Gurey as historic leader from c. 1529-42. As for Hobyo/Obbia, was that what it was called in 1419 or would Ajuuraan be a better name?

The Sultanate of Hobyo is the proper name, especially as the Ajuuraan don't rule the sultanate for the entire game

I agree with Adal having knowledge of the other side of the red sea.

Campaigns of Ahmed Gurey

From 1529-42 Adal's Sultan Ahmed Gurey led his troops on a series of campaigns backed by advanced Ottoman technology that nearly resulted in the complete conquest of Ethiopia by the Muslims. To simulate, I propose giving Adal the following leader:

historicalleader = {
id = { type = 6 id = 47501 }
category = monarch
name = "Ahmed Gurey"
startdate = {
year=1529
}
deathdate = {
year=1543
}
rank = 0
movement = 4
fire = 4
shock = 5
siege = 0
}

And the following event:
event = {
id = 155000
trigger = {
exists = TUR }
random = no
country = CYR
name = "Ottoman Assistance"
desc = "Sultan Ahmed Gurey launches his campaigns against the Ethiopians with the backing of the powerful Ottoman Empire. The Turks contributed firearms and a contigent of Turkish troops for the Somali forces, giving them a considerable edge on their Ethiopian foes."
style = 1

date = { day = 1 month = january year = 1529 }
offset = 360
deathdate = { day = 1 month = january year = 1540 }

action_a ={ #Make Friends with the Turk#
name = "Make Friends With the Turk."
command = { type = land value = 750 }
command = { type = ART which = -1 value = 20 }
command = { type = relation which = TUR value = 100 }
command = { type = relation which = ETH value = -300 }
command = { type = casusbelli which = ETH value = 120 }}}

The relation hits and the CB should be valid for any future Ethiopian states as well.

Harerge (1519) grain -> wool

Currently this province is grain. I suggest it be changed to wool.
The reference is an agroclimatic zone chart that would indicate this province is dominated by pastoralists.http://www.fas.usda.gov/pecad2/highlights/2002/10/ethiopia/baseline/Eth_Agroeco_Zones.htm

Issas(754) fish -> salt

Geographically, if we define the Danakil Depression as being in this province then salt would be a major export. There was a salt caravan route involved with it.

Not saying that its necessarily the case with these two, but there is much of a danger involved with changing to what modern day sources say that aren't necessarily talking about the period.

EVENTHIST155001;In 1415 Ethiopian Emperor Yeshaq had finally destroyed the sultanate of Ifat, that with the help of the Afar Muslims had raised in rebellion against his father. The Walashma sultan Saad ad-Din II of Ifat was pursued and cornered at the important trading port of Saylac. Yeshaq conquered the city and killed the sultan, but his family crossed the sea and took refuge in Yemen. The sons of Saad, returned a few years later, taking the name of sultans of Adal, since Ifat was now under Christian hands. Sabr, Mansur and Jamal were soon killed in fights against Ethiopia or between Muslims. It was then up to the young Shihab Badlay to avenge his father. Since Saylac had been sacked several times, he moved the capital to Dakkar, near Hargeisa. He then conquered the province of Bale, and twice invaded Ethiopia in three years trying to conquer the Muslim state of Dawaro, gaining the nickname of Arwe (the beast). However, at the battle of Gomit, in 1445, he was defeated by emperor Zara Yaqob, killed and dismembered.;;;;;;;;;;

I have revised the list of rulers for Adal. Very complicated. I had three different lists, all with gaps or unknown dates, plus the previous one that had dormant monarchs (must be the big sleep without events). I have also standardized the naming, so no ibn Whatever is used as that is just the father's name, not the rulers name.

Particularly difficult periods are 1518-1557 and 1583-1703. If you happen to know about this issue, please share.

And ummm...you are missing the monarch that is referred to in the first event file / Adal's only leader. Which is also sort of an issue, as you've given them subpar monarch for that period, instead of a military genious. (currently 1506-1543)

I'm not sure. Without "ibn" these monarchs don't really stand apart from one another with all the Ibrahims and Muhammads.
:rofl: same can be said of our Philips and Charles and we only distinguish them by their numbers. We don't put Valois or Bourbon behind them.

My best info is that he was just the Imam, and he ruled through a puppet monarch, but beeing a huge Muslim hero, he has been wrongly placed as ruler. We can handle him as Richelieu and kick up his puppet stats big time. That article also says that.

When Mahfuz was killed returning from a campaign against the Ethiopian emperor Lebna Dengel in 1517, the Adal sultanate lapsed into anarchy for several years, until Imam Ahmad killed the last of the contenders for power and took control of Harar.
