New Random/Flavor Events!

Hi. I'm not a super-honcho or anything; but I think it would be good to have a forum where people could discuss general cultural background & flava random events.

Culture-specific stuff (e.g. the philosopher/scientist events) can just go in the appropriate country's forum, but I didn't see any place for things like this; and I'm sure other people have ideas, too.

Off the top of my head, some things I've thought of are:

  • "The King Develops a Gambling Problem!"
It hasn't shown up in the game, but the courts of this period - esp. after the inflation following the Spanish gold glut - were just fabulously dissolute, betting on
The worst reputations went to the Venetians (whence 'Casino' :)); Henri IV (who lost 200,000 écus in a day) & the French courts; and the English courts under the first set of Stuarts, but it was a common way for otherwise impregnitable aristocrats to destroy themselves (I'd suggest a "Peer in Gambling Trouble" event, :) but I suppose it'd be the same thing as "Noble Family Requests Aid").

Someone wiser than I am about the East tell me if the Indian princes gambling away kingdoms & dowager empresses playing mah jongg with tax receipts was all over by this era, though.

    Possibly with an arist>6 trigger
    -75•; -400• superscaled
  • "King Wins Big!"
The nicer cousin of the last one, maybe a third as common (I didn't see any way to set frequency on Havard's site, though, so maybe you can't do that? It seems some events show up more often, but maybe I'm just paranoid).
    +50•; +250• superscaled
  • "Court Poet"
Reflection of the prestige sometimes provided by the court's patronage of the arts (e.g. Elizabeth with Shakespeare's histories or Spencer's Faerie Queene; James I seeing his ancestor Banquo as a hero in Macbeth).

+1 Stab;-75• (expensive for small states; cheap for the mighty)
  • "Sumptuary Tax"
From time to time, kings would get tired of all their gold disappearing out of the state for the baubles of the nobility.
    • Impose Tax
      +50•; -1Stab; -1Arist
(or +1 Tax Rev. on the Capital, at the cost of a larger Stab hit)
    • I need my toys
      +5% Inflation
  • "Coreligionists Request Aid"
The idea doesn't need much fleshing out. The problems, however...

You probably can't target homoreligious states; but it doesn't really need to, since you could assume that the aid would be going to a minority religious establishment. Worst case scenario - Spain getting inc. relations for sending money to Catholics in Holland - I say, it's from bribing the burghers to stop interfering with Marian cults.

You could also do a Catholic/CRC-specific event, where the inc. relations are with the Vatican.
    • Send Aid
      +25% Relations; -100/400•
    • Let God Provide
      -1 Stab; -50% Relations
  • "Court Life"
Some monarchs chose to rule almost from isolation; others favored extravagant ceremony and celebration.

Note: Obviously situations like Versailles would involve luxury manuf.; but this reflects more of the day-to-day ceremony of the court.
    • Fight for Your Right to Party!
      +1Arist; +1Cent; -1 Stab (seems decadent); -125/500•
    • (Within reason)
      +1 Stab (seems regal)
    • Bah, Humbug!
-1Arist; +75/150•; maybe dec. relations with neighbors (seems cheap)
  • "Defortification Effort"
Some rulers, during the 16th & 17th c., pulled down the fortifications of the nobility to reduce their prestige & ability to wage war against the crown.
    • You're kidding, right?
      -1Offensive
    • Burn, baby, Burn!
      -1Arist; -1 Fortress; -1 Fortress; -1 Fortress
  • "Brilliant Musician"
same as Famous Painter, only, yknow, reflective of the way Mozart, Beethoven, & co. noodled around Europe looking for patronage.
  • "Court Case Decided Against the Crown"
Sometimes judges would get the wrong idea about the balance of powers and decide for the weak against the strong.
    • I am the Law!
      +1 Cent; +1 Serf
    • No man is above the law.
      -1 Serf; -1 Stab.
  • "Crown Lands for Sale"
In extreme circumstances or, really, whenever money was a little tight, the crown often sold off some of its holdings to the nobles or haute-bourgeoisie.
    • What am I bid?
      +225•; +2% Inflation; -1 Tax; -1 Tax; -1 Tax
    • It's mine!
      nada
  • "Highwaymen"
Brigands often appeared on the King's Highways, robbing or kidnapping noblemen and interfering with the mail and tax collection. Sometimes especial measures were needed to contain them.
    • Commission Marshals
      -75•
    • Am I my subjects' keeper?
      -1 Stab; -1 Centr
  • "Those Crazy Kids"
    Sometimes, things just happened...
    (random marriage)
  • "Land Reform!"
As Europe slowly emerged from the feudal period and began to expand its market economies, there was a great deal of pressure to break up the large, inefficient baronal holdings and to allow the small farmers to own their land in clear title. There was a great deal of pressue the other direction, as well...
    • Commie Spy!
      +100•; +1Arist; -1 Innov; revolt;revolt;revolt; +3RR/36mo.
    • Disenfeof yon Yeomen
      +1 Innov; -1 Serf; -2 Stab
    • Break up the estates!
      -1 Arist; +2 Innov; -4 Serf; -4 Stab; +2 Tax; +2 Tax; +2 Tax

What do y'all think?

Some more ideas

  1. "Forced Loans"
One prime use of counselors in these days was to find wealthy members of the community to "provide" loans to the king, for the good of the country. Needless to say, many never saw their money again.

    Trigger: Centr>6
    +100/500•, -1 Stab
  2. "Warrior-prince"
An inept, but ambitious, young member of the royal family has demanded a commission.

    Trigger: not a major; Arist>5
    A) Gain 1/1/0 monarch commander; -75•
    B) -1 Arist; +5 RR for 3 mo.
  3. "Promising Officer"
Monarchs who took an interest into their military could often find talented young men lost in the bureaucracy. Given a command, who knows what they could accomplish.

Trigger: not country already glutted with officers (ie. majors); Monarch MIL>4

    A) Gain 3/3/1 general; -1 Arist (he got his position through talent); -50•
    B) +1 Arist
  4. "Court Alchemist!"
A wandering crank has convinced the king that he can turn base metals into gold, provided he is given a generous stipend and a well-supplied laboratory.

    Trigger: before 1750s
    -125/350•
  5. "Pamphleteer Stirs Dissent!"
After the invention of the printing press, some rogues would use its anonymity to stir dissent against the sovereign.

Trigger: Innov>4 (Inquistions come with censors, after all); after 1460s

    A) Freedom of the Press & All That
    -1 Stab; +3 RR for 24 mo.
    B) Find him & hang him!
    -1 Innov
  6. "Profitable New Company!"
The people of the plutocratic states (UK, Netherlands, Italy, & al.) frequently discovered new inventions (telescopes, reapers, publishing, &c.) or retail methods (the Dutch map specialists come to mind) that provided new specialties and improved the economy.

    Requires Aristo<5; Serf<7
    +1 tax; +50/200•
  7. "Company Bankruptcy!"
Basically, the dark side of the above. Bankruptcies were common in the Netherlands, I know, & sometimes as scandalous as the Enron/WorldCom debacle lately.

    Trigger Aristo<5; Serf<7
    -1 tax

Also, shouldn't there be a global/Europe-wide event upon the introduction of moveable type? There's nothing now, and the people at the time thought it was a pretty big deal. Still, I don't know what it would do, besides say, "Hey. We've got books! What do they say?" :D

No one's posted :( does anyone like these? hate them? want to tweak 'em?

jay.

EDIT: For some reason, it isn't nesting lists anymore

I'm all for diversifying the random event set so I applaud you for that. My only concern though, is all the changing of DPs. There are many historical events that use DPs as part of their triggers and so I'm always hesitant about random events that skew around with those. So those are my comments.

  • Well gambling is everywhere. Was it as prevalant? I do know in Muslim states, esp Shiite ones, that is wasn't. Its still there...can't completely repress human nature. However beyond some very minor nobles i don't know of any that fell because of gambling mostly. If gambling was there, it was a part of overall corruption.

To make it more common just make the triggers more lienet and repeat the event several times. So yes you're just paranoid or you've had a very lucky line of rulers.

Hmm...shouldn't this also raise centralization if you chose option b? ie the second part "...wage war against the crown" implies a greater sense of centralization.
[*]"Court Case Decided Against the Crown"
Sometimes judges would get the wrong idea about the balance of powers and decide for the weak against the strong.
    • I am the Law!
      +1 Cent; +1 Serf

In many places option 1 is the only choice.

Inflation seems too much...it isn't that much money and there are better ways to deal with inflation increasing events. Plus it should be scaled so larger nations sell more land, lose more tax, but get more money.

As Europe slowly emerged from the feudal period and began to expand its market economies, there was a great deal of pressure to break up the large, inefficient baronal holdings and to allow the small farmers to own their land in clear title. Maybe a continent-wide stab hit (knowledge is power and moveable type empoered many who had none before), combined with a +1 to innovative?

For Muslim countries,

  • "Fundamentalist Court!" - a sovereign striving to follow the Prophet's (pbuh) example
    • +1 Stab, -100•, -1 Innov
  • "Hedonistic Court!" - a sovereign dedicated to this world's delights; our aristocrats are drinking wine & gambling!
    • -2 Stab, +25•

For Eurasian & Mesoamerican countries,

  • "The Heavens rejoice!" - favorable astrological prophecies
    • +1 Stab

Isn't that just a tad too favourable?

I really think that explorers ought to be quite limited. There tend to be too many exploeres in the game already, although I understand that this is needed to allow all countries to get explorers

Tho'ts:
It's not totally unreasonable, but most of the majors have events like this already, so there should be triggers forbidding these events to well-scripted majors; & limiting the nation to one or the other, based on the LAND/NAV sliders - these could be a reward for going balls-to-the-wall one way or the other.

The explorer or the warships, it seems to me

The units & investment or the manufactury (i.e. four distinct events)

These need to come with an opt-out button, and be as expensive as hell - 400$, minimum, per investment/units; 800$, minimum, for the manufacturies.

Hello there,
I liked your radom events, I would give you some of my ideas
For some Islamic flavoured events.

"Sufi Tariqa"
During the late middle ages and early modern era sufi orders (Tariqa) played an important role in the Islamic World. In many cases the Sufi Tariqa formed close links with merchants and traders thus under mining the power of the Ruler.

-2 Stab, +100•, -1 Arist

This one is general middle east Islamic

"Kurdish Aga"
Though out the history of the Middle East Kurds have played an important role in military operations. One of these famed warriors has offered his serves. However, he does not seen to care if your highness wishs his serves.

Trigger: not country already glutted with officers (ie. majors); Monarch MIL>4

A)Make him my serasker!
Gain 3/2/2 general; -1 Stab
B)Tu chi dixwazi?
revolt;revolt;revolt;

This one could be for who ever owns Kurdistan province

I will think of some more later

How about these:

Reduction!
At times when the Crown found itself lacking in land it would often approporiate noble lands.
Triggers: Centralization above 5, Aristocracy above 5
A) More land for the Crown!
-1 aristocracy
+1 taxvalue in random province
+1 taxvalue in random province
+1 taxvalue in random province
-2 stab
B) Increased contributions from the noblemen!
+500 (scaled?) GC
C) Let the aristocrats keep their mansions!
+1 aristocracy
gain 20,000 cavalry.

Volunteers! (should be two events)
Triggers: Country is at war.
For A) Aristocracy is above 5
B) Aristocracy is below 5
During wartime sometimes the aristocracy or even the peasantry would rally to the cause of their king, although nationalism in it's present form was relatively unknown, a skillfull monarch could easily gain volunteers.

-Gain A) 5000 cavalry or B) 10000 infantry.

Local Peace.
Trigger. Centralization is below 4, at war.
Sometimes during wartime local nobles or the peasantry on both sides of a border would sign a local peace agreements, these would of course greatly disrupt the campaigning of the various states.
A) AARGH!
-10000 infantry
-1 centralization
B) Let us hang the traitors!
-4 stab
+1 centralization.

Military college founded
The foundation of a military college would often greatly increase the quality of a nation's officers' corps.
+500 land investment
+1 quality

Countryside devastated
Trigger: At war
Prolonged warfare would often desolate the countrisde, even if the area was not directly subject to fighting, burdensome taxes, disease and famines would often be the result.
"Not Good"
-1 taxvalue
-1000 population-

keep them coming...nothing will be added though until after the initial beta release.

Is the -1 aristocracy really nessarsay? Changing sliders from random events should be done only if it is really appropriate...if it is, then that's okay, but if its borderline, then it should be dropped.

B)Tu chi dixwazi?
revolt;revolt;revolt;
General thing can't really be done with any ease so that would haveto be dropped. Giving the them troops is however easily possible.
It would also be better to make the this province based...which porvinces do you think would be best?
Reduction!

+1 aristocracy
gain 20,000 cavalry.
+500?? base for what size?? That's a lot of money, espially early on....
Also i'm wondering outside europe if this would be good anywhere...

Here i think it would be best to move sliders depending on if you chose pesantry or aristocracy....also this there will need to be an exact event with the triggers reversed for ai nations.
As this should effect both nations and it wouldn't i don't like this event...
Military college founded
The foundation of a military college would often greatly increase the quality of a nation's officers' corps.
+500 land investment
+1 quality
250 investment in both for a random event is usually the max norm if there are no downsides....espially with slider changes.
Countryside devastated
Trigger: At war
Prolonged warfare would often desolate the countrisde, even if the area was not directly subject to fighting, burdensome taxes, disease and famines would often be the result.
"Not Good"
-1 taxvalue
-1000 population-
In theory this looks good, but since a country could have gone to war the day before, it would still be subject to this event...because of this -1 taxvalue is a bit steep...the population decrease is okay, but should be in more provines and less in each one and also scaled.

I'm not as interested in the addition of new events as I am in the removal of old ones. The worst of the lot has to be "Court Astrologer Predicts Disaster" . How many times does the astrologer have to be put to death before he stops predicting disaster? And where is the corresponding "Court Astrologer Predicts Exceptional Year" event? It just seems a little off that one crazy old man and his drug-induced delusions can bring the entire Russian Empire to its knees. Well, OK, that happened once, but that was after the end of the EUII time period, and that was an exceptional era :) .

Seriously, any random events that result in stability loss should have an opt-out, or should have -1 Stability at the worst. I'm OK with "Peasant Uprisings", there should be some penalty for having high Serfdom, but "Court Astrologer" and "Political Crisis" simply have to go (having a poor monarch is enough of a punishment without help from the random events), or have their Stability penalties cut to a minimum.

Any other events you think should be dropped (just from GC vanilla right now as many events were dropped or modded when i had to merge the 2 randomevent files from agc and eep).

But as far as stability loss, i haveto say i can't agree with you. True most random events shouldn't have more than -1 stability drop, but i don't believe in opt outs for the sake of opting out if there isn't a reasonable chance it would have been chosen. Also some events meant for larger nations (specifically large WC nations) need to have higher stability drop as -1 stability isn't a big deal....

Jinnai said:

In my experience, it is exactly the opposite: The larger a country is, the more every negative stability hit hurts. -1 stability for a 100 or 200 province country is nearly always a much worse deal than for a 10 province country.

(EDIT: Not that I am opposed to challenging random events especially intended for WC wannabes, so long as they are written to be challenging rather than punitive, mind you :D)

Anyway, I am looking forwards to seing what you managed to make out of the merger of the AGC and EEP randomevents - surely a thankless task. :)

My ideas :)

"Colonial Heresy"

"Often a group which felt they were under religious oppresion within a nation would emigrate to its colonial lands."

"Indeed"
>Heretic religion in colonial province...
>Increase (1000) popultion in same colony. [1000 to push over city status, and hence prevent the next colonist from converting it back...]

"I Can't think of a good name"

"Often colonists were those who didn't fit it within a nation, due to cultural or religious differences. A crafty monarch could use encourage these 'undesirables' to emigrate and so rid himself of problems at home."

"ACTION A"
>nothing happens

"Encourage Dissenters to emigrate"
> - R.R. across nation for 12 months.
> + 2 colonists OR + population in a colony (+500 maybe)

"Encourage the disenchanfrasted to emigrate"
> conversion of non-colonial province
> heretic of colonial province.
> population of [same] colonial province increases by 1000

NeilJT, it is not possible to target specifically colonial/non-colonial. The closest you get is the ability to target using -4, which is a province with colony status on the American continent. Additionally, as far as I remember, it is not possible to convert to a random heretic religion, i.e. non-state, via event, only to specified religions. I might be wrong on this one, though.

i have created some events like that here : http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2306304&postcount=390
.

I have also here some bad conversion events : http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1976752&postcount=1
.

here an ai event for release an annexed papal state : http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1976924&postcount=5
.

End, I done this event to Hundred Years War Mod (translated by Lord Tarleton) :

NOT = {

The companies made fire of any wood, lived on the country, put at bag, carried what was worth some money. The captains negotiated with the cities and the villages the amount of the ransoms to be paid for the safe life of the inhabitants, the integrity of the houses and the arrival of the supply. The merchants were held to ransom on the roads as well as in their city. To survive, it was unceasingly necessary to pay, and the peasant unable to find cash quickly trembled while thinking of the next fire of its attic."

Within the context of the event that could be logical - I think it tended to be N. America where the religious colonists / criminals were sent (especially by the British government ).

Looking at the event guide which comes with EU 2 there is:

command = { type = heretic which = x }

Religion in province x (-1 is a random province, -2 is the capital) changes from the state religion to some other religion (heretical, if possible).

This would seem to do what I wish - it it works otherwise then maybe we should forget it. :)

Ok, but that will still only allow you to target colonial provinces - your events will not be able to target specifically non-colonial provinces. Still, a step in the right direction. :)

Hah. Had forgotten that one, but now you mention it, it all comes back - gradually. Does it actually work? That is the question. It was, if I recall correctly, used in the randomevents in EU2 1.00 (the heresy random event), but there were so many problems with it, that the event was changed. Ah, it is such a long time ago, that I begin doubting even my own memories.

Try using it and report whether it works correctly now. :)
