Europa Universalis IV Reviews (English)

Destructoid – 9,5/10 - Crushing peasants and building empires
“I'm quite willing to admit that I've become obsessed with Europa Universalis IV. When I'm not talking about it, I'm desperate to bring it up, and when I chat to someone that I know for a fact plays it, I'll happily natter away for hours, regaling them with the history of my nations, demanding that they entertain me with tales of their own.
Paradox Development Studio has shown that it understands grand strategy like no other studio. Europa Universalis IV is the defining game in the genre, laying out the whole world in front of players and just letting them have at it. It's a polished, almost terrifyingly vast title that gets its hooks in you the moment you click on that first country, and simply refuses to let go. Now, if you don't mind, I've got some peasants to oppress. “

The Kotaku Review
"I'll say it again, though: no matter how tough it is getting past the game's confronting first hours, it's worth it. bFew games let you rule like EUIV does, and few let you rule in a world so vast in scale, so open to players writing their own histories and shaping the globe. I guess the best way of describing the game is this: if you like Total War and/or Civilization, and you're willing to trade those game's character and visual flair for something with more meat, this is the game for you."

Wot I Think: Europa Universalis IV - review at Rock,Paper,Shotgun
"EU IV is a fascinating simulation, an alternate history generator, a narrative tool and an entirely successful redesign of a strong formula. It’s also a remarkably entertaining game, in some ways closer to its cardboard roots than it has been for more than a decade, although crunching an abundance of numbers as only a computer can. Volumes will be written about viable tactics for each nation and some of the discoveries will be unexpected, surprising even the developers. They have created a world in flux, though finely poised, and it is here, rather than in city-wide urban murder simulators, that gaming’s lofty drive toward emergence, living worlds and total player agency is best realised."

The Koalition - Score: 95/100 & Verdict: Amazing
"Europa Universalis 4 represents the greatest release by Paradox in the grand strategy genre thus far, rivaled only by Crusader Kings 2. With a revamped trade system, greater tradeoffs and need for specialization, and a bit more challenge for the veterans, fans of the genre or even more casual players seeking a game in which to test the waters of grand strategy should give it a try. The tutorial and tooltip system makes game play considerably more transparent, and for the price tag of only $40, it is a bargain for the hundreds of hours of unique and entertaining game play that fans will derive from it. Paradox has finally distinguished itself as a major game developer, and one can only look forward to future releases that further revamp their storied titles and franchises."

PC Gamer - 91/100 and Editors Choice!
Europa Universalis IV is a masterwork of a strategy game. It still has its rough edges, and convoluted underlying systems that will only be comprehensible to the most in-depth and experienced players. But never before has the core gameplay been so accessible to a total grand strategy newbie. At any given time, you can get as much or as little help as you need from the interface regarding what you should be focusing on. PDS has demonstrated a precise understanding of what turned some potential world conquerors off of its previous forays, and proven its ability to improve on the formula in the right directions with the finesse of a true veteran studio.
The result of these efforts is a textured and engrossing simulation that conquers the common ground between your average Civilization V player and the long-time devotees of grand strategy. Never before have I felt that “World at your fingertips” feeling as strongly, and you owe it to your sense of discovery to give EU IV an hour of your life or two (hundred). Order in tonight. You have a world to dominate.

Gamespot review - 9/10 & Editors Choice
"Complex and rewarding strategizing makes the fourth game in the Europa Universalis dynasty shine. Europa Universalis IV easily provides hundreds of hours of gameplay for those who develop a taste for it. There are very few games remotely like this out there, making it a must-get game for people who want to "fix" history."

Of course it is. It’s fantastic, brilliant even, and easily Paradox’s best game since they released Crusader Kings II in 2011. "

IGN - The bright future of history - Score: 89/100
Europa Universalis IV is easy to recommend to anyone interested in historical strategy – it’s the best game in the series, which can now take its place, with no caveats, among the giants of the genre. Very few strategy games manage to show the grand sweep of history as something that can be directly influenced and made fun, and only EU4 manages to do it with both a level of complexity that creates historical plausibility and a learning curve gentle enough to be welcoming and satisfying.

It is the best game in its genre that I have yet to play in almost 30 years of playing video games. The level of complexity and freedom of play style is exceptional. If you want play a strategy game, you simply can’t do any better than this."

“I’m hoping that you can see the astounding amount of depth, and more importantly choice, that EU provides the player. You can take nearly any nation on Earth, on a realistically rendered Earth, and take them in any direction you want, using an array of tools that dwarf any comparable game I’ve played recently. “It's one of those games that can swallow an evening whole, spitting a player out in the early hours of the morning with blurry eyes and a head full of homemade stories. It's deep and complex, but not unintuitive, and the range of options open to the player means variety and longevity. Overall it might lack some of the personality of Crusader Kings II, but there's so much here that strategy fans will have plenty to get their teeth stuck into, and I'd recommend it to both EU veterans and newcomers alike.”

Seeing the world’s most illustrious nations form and thrive before your own eyes is a unique experience in itself, and is an incredibly engrossing experience that speaks to man’s fascination of the ever-flowing tide of time.”

Europa Universalis IV is a much-needed update to a classic PC game franchise. I was certain she had failed to read the clock correctly in her groggy state, and it wasn’t until I confirmed the accuracy of her statement that I realized I had just spent the entire night trying to stabilize against a world that had decided I had grown too big a threat to Europe. The World that May Have Been, a Europa Universalis IV Let’s Play

Part 1: Never Pick on Someone Your Own Size
Welcome to my Let’s Play of Europa Universalis IV, a grand strategy game from Paradox Development Studio set during the early modern era of world history.
I am playing as England from the earliest possible start date, 1444; I will continue until either the game ends (in the early 19th century) or I stop having fun. In that time, I’ll explore aspects of the game such as exploration, trade, diplomacy, and war. I am also playing Ironman mode, which means I have just the one save slot and can’t abuse save/reload, and I am not using any mods except for one that enlarges the font (uncomfortably small by default). Lastly, I’ll emphasise narrative rather than gameplay, and if I do interject with an “out of universe” comment, I’ll mark it clearly, (like so). Onward to the game!

Part 2: The Best of Times, the Worst of Times
Then, as Anne waited for her next audience to begin, a man tumbled out of a rug. A moment later, he began to speak – very quickly, as the queen’s guards and the bolder courtiers were advancing on him. Apologies for the intrusion, but this was the only way he could think of to gain an audience. His name was Albert Gloucester, navigator and sea captain. He planned to sail west through the Atlantic, and that way reach distant Asia. Would the queen sponsor him?
http://www.matchstickeyes.com/2013/...-part-2-the-best-of-times-the-worst-of-times/

Part 3: If You Can’t Beat Them…
In 1584, under siege by French-backed Catholic rebels, King Augustus I of Great Britain renounced the Protestant faith. It was a last resort; the British treasury was empty, the army shattered, the realm ruined – and the rebels endless. One could almost hear the cackles in Paris as Augustus put his signature to the document reinstating Catholicism as the state religion of Britain; it was the greatest humiliation a British monarch had suffered since the Hundred Years’ War.
http://www.matchstickeyes.com/2013/...is-iv-lets-play-part-3-if-you-cant-beat-them/
Part 4: The Death and Rebirth of the British Empire
In 1665, Great Britain lay in ruins, her navy and trade fleets sunk, her cities occupied by French soldiers. It was the culmination of a series of unsuccessful wars waged throughout the 17th century, and as His Britannic Majesty’s hangdog envoys filed into the negotiating room, it was in doubt whether Britain would even survive. Previous wars had seen Wales, Cornwall, Northumberland lost, albeit temporarily. Could her victorious enemies even force her to give up Scotland?

Part 5 (FINAL): Bend with the Wind
If you walk around London today, you will still find monuments to the war heroes of the 18th century, and cross streets named after the ministers who led Britain to victory over France and Portugal and the Dutch. But from a modern perspective, what stands out is how much blood was shed for so little effect. When the century opened, Britain, France, Portugal and Spain were the foremost powers of western Europe; and a hundred years later that had not changed. The true change of the period occurred inside borders, not between them.

Europa Universalis IV: The Verdict
Paradox Development Studio has added some of its best and most polished strategy mechanics to its traditional strength – the creation of an alternate-history generator that allows us to watch empires rise, and fall, and battle the same constraints as their real-world counterparts. The result is my favourite Paradox game since 2005’s Hearts of Iron 2, a good omen (together with last year’s Crusader Kings 2) for the studio, and a game I can recommend to lovers of historical grand strategy.

Gathered from Metacritic: http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/europa-universalis-iv
Normally I look there for reviews and click a couple of respected sites I have good experience with. And having a lot of them grouped makes it easy to see the extreme scores (both low and high) and have a look why those reviewers did that.

PS. This time though, I prepurchased the game just because I really wanted it. :)

why haven't any of the major review sites (except PC Gamer) reviewed the game yet? I havent heard a thing from IGN, gamespot, polygon, destructoid, or giant bomb

A lot of review codes are being sent out these week to a lot of sites,
because we wanted them to be able to try out MP and the converter for the review.
So more reviews will hopefully surface soon *knock on wood* :)

The reviewer is almost crying how hard and complex the game is. :p
Lower score because he couldn't get into the game due to its magnificent complexity, therefore score has to be below 80?
Very silly site, the comments on that article agree with me. :D

I can't speak German, but I used Google Translate to look over the review. On the top of the Score page, it is translated "High-epic for all complex strategy, which does not offer enough depth of play Civilization". Is it trying to say that it is not as deep as Civilization? If so, the reviewer should die for excessive stupidity.

It actually says it's a very complex strategy game for all those for whom Civilization doesn't offer enough depth.

I most admit, I thought i'd be very disapointed.. my expectations were so high, that i expected a game as good as EU3.. Hard as that may be to live up to Paradox did just that, not only as good as EU3 but one might say better, it adds so much to an already perfect game series..

in my oppinion
10/10

I <3 Paradox

That Gamestar review is a joke. As a fellow German i have to apologize for that guy.

He criticizes the complexity, depth, difficulty, sound and graphics.
On the other hand he gives the game a 10/10 in longevity and scale.

Graphics and sound just really pulled that score down, which is in my opinion pretty much not at all important with a game like EU.
And hey, i found the changing of seasons quite breathtaking.
