I recently started playing V2 again (now with all those new versions of PDM how could I even resist :D ) after playing a lot of DW. Now, anyone who has played DW will tell that when zoomed out the speed is truly excellent. Now, when I came back to V2, with all the different tips and tricks for speeding up the game (Low res textures, low settings, changing update value in settings) the game is quite slow. It takes a while for a month to end.

I wanted to ask: Are there any new tricks on speeding up Victoria? Is it normal for the game to be slow? (I remember the speed was fine for me, but that was before DW, so in comparison I think it looks different).

Thanks!

PDM is actually somewhat more processor-and-memory intensive that baseline V2, as assimilation has been nerfed and there's more goods, and the economy runs properly (so a hell of a lot less sea-dumping). I have no idea how you might speed it up :(

But how much time does it ideally take for a month to pass? (So I could see If I am doing well or not)

I think I had some sort of resource leak issue. I found late game ran much faster after saving, quitting and starting up again. So if you have been playing a while and it seems to be going treacly, saving quitting and reloading is something to try.

Just sitting there and watching a month pass, maybe 30-40s down to 10-15s, but there were horrendous delays on actually trying to select and order units around and switch around the province displays and so on, which pretty much vanished on reload.

My experience has been similar to yours. I spent a weekend ill playing the game when I wasn't eating, sleeping, or at the privy and found that after several hours I had to quit/reload to experience typical game speeds.

victoria 2 is extremely HDD intensive. I found that I got a big boost to game speed by defragging. Also, any mod that decreases the army/navy spam late-game will vastly speed up the late-game. In my last hands-off test game with AoC the game ran from 1836 to 1936 in 6 hours and 30 minutes at full speed.

Agreed with Rizz on this - there also some anecdotal evidence that defragging can reduce the number of OOS errors in multiplay.

 I think it would take me at least two or three times as long as that.

By mid game in vanilla, it takes 5 seconds for a day to pass without pausing...and every youtube video I see has really fast top speeds of around 5 days per second...am I the only one whose game is this slow? Does it have to do with the fact that I like playing countries that get really large(my last 5 major games were British World Conquest, Chinese Asian conquest, Ottoman European Conquest/Africa colonisation, Austria->Germany European conquest(including all of European Russia), and Scandinavia colonising almost all of Africa)?

If the hard drive is what limits the speed of the game, then maybe having a Solid State HD would improve it significantly... Anyone have experience with that?

Got Intel 330 SSD, to be honest it works quite decent, especially in later years but it's not as big difference as you'd expect. But that may be because I still have sata2 motherboard since gonna update mobo/cpu/ram next month (so I can get full 500mb/s / 450mb/s speed from this SSD)
