Pity about the king. If I was in charge I would be so tempted to attack Spain. But if you don't want Spain then you don't want Spain. :)

Poison, no legitimate heir and a cousin taking over, you definatly made me suspicious there. It seems slowly the Spanish get the upper hand in a war I had expected them to lose to be honest. I too would be tempted to stab their back, but it seems Portugal is not interested in Europe and I'm fine with that. Even better nobody will expect this tiny inconspicuous country in the far west of Europe to dominate the world. They'll not know what happened until it has.

I wonder what is happening to all your Venetians merchants. Are they just getting lost on the way - or succumbing to cut-throat competition!

And again, from the top.

Header: Note about the merchants heading to Venice. We are actually getting word, its' doing the whole market price increase where we kick out another nations merchant but our merchant doesn't actually set up shop. I just say we don't receive word.

And so ended the reign of João II, King of Portugal. Would his heir, Manuel the First follow in his footsteps? Would he continue with João's dreams of a New Portuguese Empire? Or would he fail Portugal as a king and undo all the hard work of the previous monarch? Only time will tell.

1496

January 1st
Happy new year!

January 4th
Trader sent to Leone. No word from our latest merchant sent to Venice. Failure suspected. Yet another merchant is sent to Venice.

February 3rd
Manuel is beginning to show an interest in Morocco and the North African coast. He orders for 2000 footmen and 10 'land-cannons' to be trained/built in Tangiers.

February 16th
A letter from Cape Verde. It tells us that Bartolomeu Dias and his expedition arrived there on the 11th. It says he received minor repairs on his ship and left as soon as possible. He seemed very eager to explore the coast of the lands in the West.

February 27th
Diplomats have started to arrive from our alliance. The first one, from The Hanseatic League arrived on this day. Other diplomats from Pomerania, England and Holstein arrived shortly after. They tell us they had agreed to meet in Portugal for meeting of the alliance to discuss the progress and future goals of the alliance. After introductions are exchanged they agree to meet in The Royal Palace of Lisboa on the 30th of February.

February 30th
The first official meeting of all members of The Hanseatic League Alliance meet in a grand hall of The Royal Palace of Lisboa. The Hanseatic League, Pomerania, England and Holstein are all represented by diplomats, Portugal is represented by Manuel. The 5 men are accompanied only by a translator who is fluent in Portuguese, English and a Germanic tongue familiar to the other 3 diplomats. The doors were guarded during the meeting which lasted many hours during which a great many things were discussed. Almost all of the discussions were friendly and no real arguments or disagreements were reached. That was until Denmark came up in conversation.

Denmark was a very touchy subject indeed. The Hanseatic League and Pomerania were very enthusiastic on the idea of war with Denmark but Holstein was committed to a long peace-time with Denmark, possibly even inviting them into the alliance. Eventually, England and Manuel were persuaded into a war against Denmark and the Holstein diplomat began to get distressed. Holstein had an excellent relationship with Denmark and eventually the diplomat declared that if The Hanseatic League Alliance declared war on Denmark then Holstein would join the war on Denmark's side. This greatly angered the others. England and Manuel were quick to vote Holstein out of the alliance but The League and Pomerania would have nothing of it. The Denmark issue was then moved from and left under discussion.

Slowly, the meeting turned back to trade agreements and recent discoveries and went long into the night. The conversational topics getting lighter and lighter as subsequent bottles of port were emptied. When the 6 men finally emerged they were all life-long friends.

March 19th
Poland-Lithuania is accused of being too friendly towards Moslem nations. The Papal States threatens war if Poland-Lithuania does not break their relations with Algiers and The Hafsid Empire immediately.

March 27th
Word is received from ... somewhere or other. Poland-Lithuania defied The Papal States, saying something about peace and harmony between the two religions. Declaring that Christians are really not that different from Moslems. These ramblings are passed off as heresy. The Papal States declared war on Poland-Lithuania on the 24th. The French Alliance (France, Savoy, Brittany, Scotland and Navarra) backed them fully. Moldovia deserted Poland-Lithuania saying that it too considered these talks to be heresy but continues to assist Poland-Lithuania against The Teutonic Order and Prussia. Poland-Lithuania's Moslem allies backed them whole-heartedly. Hopefully this new war will divert the French and their allies away from Spain. Leaving her to piece her empire back together.

April 3rd
ANOTHER merchant is sent to Venice (did I really send this many merchants?).

May 7th
A trader is sent to Leone to expand our trading post there. No word from our merchant sent to Venice. Failure suspected.

May 11th
Word from Andalusia: The ever-growing rebellion in Spain is reaching alarming heights. Andalusia and Gibraltar have been occupied for so long that they are beginning to embrace the rebellion fully. They are now openly defying Spanish attempts to reclaim the provinces. The rebellion now controls: Grenada, Andalusia, Gibraltar, Toledo and Madrid.

1496May-Rebellion.jpg

The growing rebellion in Spain grows further.

May 23rd
No word from settlers sent to Damara. Failure suspected. This would be the 3rd batch we have sent to their deaths at Damara.

June 2nd
Again, merchant sent to Venice...

June 13th
The 2000 footmen and 10 'land-cannons' are successfully trained/built in Tangiers.

July 5th
Word from Andalusia: The rebellion in Spain now controls Valencia. Spain's military command is still in taters. Many small Spanish armies are marching randomly around Spain aimlessly searching for the rebellion. No word has been received from our merchant sent to Venice (funny that). Failure suspected.

November 2nd
2 merchants sent to Venice

December 6th
Word from one of our merchants in Venice, he says he split up from the other merchant while in Venice but has successfully set up shop. No word from our other merchant.

December 17th
Word from Andalusia, rebellion keeps growing and growing. More Spaniards give them support. Half of Spain is now in open revolt. Grenada, Gibraltar, Andalusia and Toledo now fully support the rebellion and will fight Spanish troops. Madrid still remains loyal to the government but is controlled by the rebellion. The rebel provinces are sure to form into a separate country soon. Small Spanish armies continue to wander around Spain.

That's about it for that year. Yup.

A pointer about merchants being sent to filled CoTs: these places can only hold 20 levels worth of merchants; if it's full, a merchant can only either do nothing at all or else they can compete out someone else's merchant (the top guy's if that's not you). If you want to expand your presence, you have to send at least two merchants (or time it so that someone else does the competing so that it won't be full when your merchant shows up).

Venice is one of the hardest COTs to try to get any presence in, but sending more merchants at once might get you on the inside. Spain sure is having troubles, actually I think it is strange that Granada hasn’t formed yet. If this continues maybe soon the Spanish government will fall as well. Shall be interesting to see in the future.

It takes some time before Granada will form. How long have they been rebelling?

The forcefulness of the rebels isn't what's happening. It's the uselessness of Spain. It's the same, mediocre, rebellion army from the very beginning, doing whatever the hell it wants. The IGC starts off with a single rebel army in Grenada as opposed to a whole different country of Grenada like in the normal GC. It's supposed to fall straight away methinks but Spain got dragged into a war with France pretty early and it must be messing with it.

Also, a Portugal/Spain war will not happen. So... yeah.

It's that time again...

1497

January 1st
Happy new year! A Portuguese noble by the name of Luís de Camões has offered himself and his small army of footmen to help explore the lands of South Africa and eventually India. Preparations are made for his expedition straight away. Cavalry and additional footmen are taken from the Army of Almeida and placed under his command. 3 transport galleons are taken from the Portuguese Fleet and are named the 'Atlantic Squadron'. These ships will transport Camões and his army to South Africa. Merchant sent to Paris

Fun Fact: Camões (Camoens) and his men are not part of 'Camoens Expedition', as you would expect. They didn't get a name! They got a blank area where their name should be.

January 10th
Cavalry are being trained in Tangiers to be given to Camões when he arrives there from Lisboa. If he arrives before the training is complete, cavalry from the Army of Faro will be used.

January 17th
Word from Cape Verde: Dias returned from the West on the 14th. He dropped off his maps, raving about rich, new lands. He re-supplied very quickly and set off again, refusing to wait for orders.

1497January-SouthAtlanticCoast.jpg

Dias' first finds of the Newfoundland coast

January 21st
A decision is made to set up a permanent settlement in Senegal. A large band of settlers is sent to expand our trading post into a fully working colony.

February 6th
Word from somewhere: The Teuton-Polish war ended on the 2nd of February. The Teutonic Order came out on top and Poland-Lithuania was forced to pay 29 ducats and hand over their provinces of Belarus and Lithuania (!).

1497February-TeutonGainsinPoland.jpg

The Teutonic Order's new lands.

February 9th
A royal marriage is arranged with Spain. Álvaro Soares de Carvalho is to be married to a Spanish Princess. While the arrangements were taking place the Spaniards tell us that the rebellion is growing totally out of their control. Valencia and Catalonia are now controlled by the rebels while Aragon is being sieged.

February 12th
Camões left Portugal and headed for the South African coast. His first stop will be Tangiers where he will receive additional cavalry.

March 20th
João II's promise of a Portuguese controlled Tangiers is kept. Manuel addresses the nation and says that he will also not allow Tangiers to fall into the hands of a foreign nation.

March 26th
Camões and the Atlantic Squadron arrive in Tangiers. The cavalry have not finished their training so 3000 cavalry from the Army of Faro are placed under Camões' command. His army now numbers 2000 footmen and 4000 cavalry.

April 15th
Word is received from Senegal. Our colonization attempt was successful. It is now a working, self-sustaining colony, supporting about 140 colonists.

(Why are my trade venues in Senegal are now lower? They were 12 under a level 4 TP, they've been reduced to 2 as a level 1 colony.)

May 5th
Another bunch of colonists are sent to expand our colony in Senegal.

May 23rd
Word from our merchant in Andalusia. He tells us that Northern Spain is being attacked by 4 large French Alliance armies. The French appear to be fed up with this war and have decided to end it by a decisive march into Spain. The merchant has also noted that the rebellion armies have been attacking and winning battles against the French. A sign of patriotism from these barbarians.

June 5th
João II's promise of keeping Turkey out of North Africa has been kept. The population is not worried of marauding Turks anymore so Manuel does not bother to uh.. repromise (?) it.

June 12th
More word from Andalusia. The Spanish rebellion leader has been killed and the main bulk of his army has been destroyed. This great deed to the Spanish government has been done by, of all things, a French army. The rebellion was finally squashed by a mighty French army of 70 000 men. The army is currently marching South through Spain and is sieging Aragon.

July 18th
Word comes from Senegal. They sent the Atlantic Squadron back up North to get more men for Camões. While Camões waits for reinforcements he has ventured North so as to create a path from Nouakchott to Senegal. They have also not mentioned the settler we sent to them, we decide that our settler must have failed so another one is sent.

1497June-Camoensplan.jpg

Camões' plan of what to do while waiting for his reinforcements.

August 6th
Two merchants have been sent to Venice. We have also been told that France is experiencing a rebellion in Milan. The peoples of Milan are not happy under French rule and want their independence back.

That'll do for now. Hope you enjoyed it!

A Level 1 TP and a Level 3 Colony will both produce the same amount of trade value. A TP has far fewer people, but all they are doing is trading. A colony has to worry about sustinance, children, and all sorts of day-to-day things.

And it may be too late now, but when exploring with an army, it will be much quicker to do it with just Cav. In Africa, it will make a difference of about an entire month. And don't bother to send them all the way to Nouakchott; just discover the middle province and then return to Senegal. If you send an army into a province with natives, there's a chance based on their aggressiveness that they will attack you.

Nice getting a conquistador, no you can explore a lot along the coast of Africa as well. Also interesting to see that the French have decided to end the war, very good that the rebels have decided that they are Spanish so that they can repel the French…

Number Crunch!

Hmm.. 3 pages for 4 and a half years. That's 1.5 years a page.
There are 266.6666667 1.5s in 400.

So... if I stay at my current speed and end up actually finishing this... we're going to have 266.6666667 pages in this thread. Right?

Also, this have been going for about 3 weeks OR 21 days. So that's 0.214285714 years a day.
There are 1866.666667 0.214285714's in 400.
There are 5.114155252 1866.666667's in 365.

So... if I stay at my current speed and end up actually finishing this... we're going to wait 5.114155252 years for me to finish. Right?

Looks like I'd better ... HURRY THE HELL UP!
