Nice update, and thanks for changing to silver. And don't listen to those other advisors: Spain isn't going to mess with your colonial empire; stay friends with them and you're safe in Europe.

-Pat

Battle bunny - That's kinda what I'm doing, except the expedition has to get home, then I send the colonist.

SunZyl - I don't really want any of Spain, I just want to colonise alot, but yes, I probably could take some of Spain but it would ruin my relationship with them. Oh and Andalusia is owned by Spain but I've made a mistake. The rebellion is currently occupying Toledo and not Andalusia.

Thanks for support all.

Yay

July 3rd
More word from Andalusia: The rebels now control Toledo as well as Grenada. They are currently seiging Andalusia but are allowing minimal amounts of non-Spanish trade. The Spanish army still rests on the Northern border waiting for a French attack. We have sent the Army of Almeidia to our southern provence of Algarve incase the rebellion turns on Portugal. More cavalry trained in Algarve.

The progress of the rebellion from Granada.

July 12th
Our cavalry regiment is successfuly trained in Tangiers. The Army of Faro is 14,000 strong.

July 18th
Army of Almeida arrives in Elvas. Merchant sent to Mecklemburg.

September 1st
Word from out merchant sent to Mecklemburg: he has successfully set up shop and our alliance is still strong.

October 3rd
Cavalry finished training in Algarve. Word from our colony in Palanas: our attempt to expand our trading post in Leone failed on the 20th of August and the entire post was massacred not 3 days later.

October 25th
News comes from the East. One of Russia's vassals named 'Kazan' has done something terribly wrong. Russia cancelled it's vassalation and promptly declared war on Kazan. Russia's allies came to it's aid and Kazan must now fight Crimea, Ryazan, Pskov and Denmark aswell as the Russians. Out hearts go out to the Kazanians.

November 8th
Word from Andalusian merchant: Word going around that France now controls Franche Comte, Andalusia still being seiged by rebels. Merchant sent to Paris so as to serve as a more reliable source of information about the fighting up North.

As the approach of the one year anniversary of 'The New Portuguese Empire' approaches, João II does not know what to think. His plan has cost Portugal an awful amount and has angered many Portuguese nobels. He is begining to fear for his life. Still, at least he will be remembered.

There we go, an update. Sorry it took a while but I've had a bit on my plate lately and I play very very slowly. It was also a very short 6 months. Whole year update next. Promise!

Always nice to see Spain so discomforted as Portugal. Just so long as those armies don't cross the border.

No need to apologize until your updates are as infrequent as mine. :eek:o

Nice update; I like how your information comes from your merchants, it's a nice literary touch.
oh, and "it's" is "its" when it's not "it is".

Very nice way of writing the update, the rumours from around Europe arriving by word from your merchants. Also good to see Spain is in trouble, should give you a chance to grab a little from them while they are occupied with rebels

Peepz, EUI rebels don't defect, and if he's peaceful he won't probably attack Spain early on. Oh,and I'm sick of people going to Spain, taking Andalusia and Toledo and win the game.

They do declare independence, but there isn't a weedy **** for every province like in EU2. However, independent countries can get really big (I've got already: 3 prov Granada, 6 prov Greece, etc.)

What happens when they defect? Also, how long does it take for Granada to declare independance, they've been controlling 4 provinces for a while now.

Update. Yay.

João II spent Christmas in hiding. He did not go out much and refused to address the nation on New Years Eve. This was all due to his perseption that Portuguese nobles had the intention to kill him. He was becoming slightly paranoid. A short rest was exactly what he needed.

1493

January 3rd
Merchant sent to expand trade in Andalusia to assist current merchant in Andalusia and to ensure a permanent position there. Trader sent to expand the trading post in Senegal.

January 7th
Our ally Pommerania offers a royal marriage. João II's illegitimate daughter Brites Anes de Santarém is arranged to marry a Pommeranian prince.

February 1st
Merchant in Andalusia returns home. He was put out of buissness by some Grenada rebels. He tells us that the rebels control Andalusia and are heading towards Gibraltar. They have been relatively unapposed by the Spanish Army.

March 1st
Great technological advance! A Portuguese inventor has created a specialised cannon (like one of those found on a ship) that can be moved and fired while on land. (Field artillery) We invest some money into his research

March 12th
Word from Senegal, our trading post has been expanded successfully.

April 1st
Word from our new Andalusia merchant: The Spaniards have finally responded to the rebels. A large Spanish army is marching south through Spain to quell the rebellion. They have already retaken Toledo.

April 11th
The Spaniards have called for one of our diplomats to meet them in the city of Tordesillas. A merchant heading for Paris goes with him.

April 13th
Our diplomat we sent to Spain has returned home urgently. He bares news of a 'Tratado de Tordesilhas' (Treaty of Tordesillas). The treaty divides the new world up between the countries of Spain and Portugal. Spain made sure we were included in the treaty because of our exploration of the African coast and because we did not take advantage of their miliary predicament. Spain tells us that the lands they have found in the West are their claim and most of the African coast + Indian coast is now our claim.

April 28th
Word from Andalusia: The Spanish army is attempting to retake Andalusia from dug-in rebels. The main bulk of the rebel army is seiging Gibraltar.

May 1st
Another trader is sent to Sengal to expand our trading post there.

May 13th
Merchant sent to Paris sends word. He successfully set up shop on the 10th.

May 21st
News of the war in the East is recieved. A great Turkish army is marching straight through Mameluk territory. They have reached Sinai and are getting dangerously close to North Africa. The news is kept secret from the public so as not to recreate the fears of Tunisia falling. All we can do is sit and hope that Turkey does not annex/ask for North African provinces at the end of the war.

June 5th
The Russo-Kazan war ended on the 30th of May. Kazan defended itself well from the Russian alliance. It kept all it's provences and only had to pay 20 ducats for peace.

June 7th
Andalusia has been retaken by the Spainish army. Gibraltar still being seiged by rebels. The French alliance has been concentrating on the Spanish-owned Low Lands and Artois is being seiged by France. The Northern border of Spain has been left relatively untouched. Merchant sent to Venice

July 16th
Word from Senegal, our trading post has successfully been expanded yet again. No word from out merchant in Venice. Failure is suspected.

August 9th
Bartolomeu Dias' expedition has been out of contact with us for more than 24 months. They have not returned home or sent word to us. The worst is suspected. Merchant sent to Genoa.

August 11th
Word from our merchant in Andalusia. The Spanish army has left the rebellion in the South and is heading back to the Northern border. They did not challange the rebellion army and simply retook some lands that were lost. Gibraltar is still being seiged and the rebellion is as strong as ever. Artois has been captured from Spain and has been put under control of The Papal States.

September-Early December
Our merchant set to Genoa is successful, another is sent and he is successful as well. Andalusia is being seiged by the rebels again and Gibraltar is controlled by the rebellion.

December 10th
Urgent news is recieved from Fernando Po. Dias has returned! He returned in his only remaining ship (which was desperatly in need for repair) and very few remaining crewmen. The expedition cost two warships and many lives but the route to the spice trade has been opened. He has also found the coast of a large island just off the South-East African coast (Madagascar). A trader has been sent to Kribi and a settler has been sent to Damara. Two more warships are being made in Lisboa to be placed under Dias' command for his next expedition.

SouthAfricanCoast.jpg

Dias' completed route to the Spice Trade.

December 20th
After a short rest and minimal repairs on his ship, Dias and his crew plus some set off to explore the mid-West African coast while they wait for the extra ships from Lisboa.

When Bartolomeu Dias finally returned home, he returned a hero. His return greatly increased the popularity of João II and he finally felt safe to come out in the open again. Many nobles still despised him due to his massive spending of the Portuguese treasury, but they probably wouldn't have him killed. The two year anniversary of 'The New Portuguese Empire' was coming around and things were looking up.

Well there you go, a whole year. My lord that's alot of words. I think I mention too many things. Hell, I mention everything (more or less). Anyway.. yay.

Nice update, seem like your exploration is going very well, now you can sail to India without having to travel across land under Mameluk or Ottoman control… Diaz did very well :)

Good exploration. Surely plenty of new opportunities await.
