@Olav

Right you are, each trading centre brings with it new ducats and opportunities, and one merchant each year if we ever find a use for him.

December 26th, 1592. The war will begin shortly. Benin has conveniently withdrawn their army from their border with Fez. The plan be to break past their army and siege multiple provinces, then destroy the army in a series of battles afterwards. The main goal of the war be to gain Ivoria, the trade centre, although other provinces could be involved.

15322877-f4b.jpg

March 25th, 1593. Here we see initial invasions of Zaria and Ivoria finding no resistance (Benin and Portugal are currently involved in a generic war; Portugal could get involved). Those armies are moving forth to deeper provinces, to meet the Beninese recruits and siege as many provinces simultaneously as we can. The cavalry detachment was initially expected to remain in Fez to fend off attacks and avoid attrition, but due to these conditions and a lack of spare men, the cavalry will now deploy to siege Ivoria. Fez does not "assault" fortresses, we engage in glacial, honourable sieges.

15322883-454.jpg

Infantry are occasionally being built to replace those brave soldiers of Fez which died of jungle fever.

October 5th, 1593. Colonel Minya be reinforcing the siege of Accra. As you can see, Benin's main army (of about twenty thousand) be distracted by some thing to the south. Benin be forced to attack across the Niger river to attack our positions.

15322886-718.jpg

January 4th, 1595. Fez captured Accra. On to Ivoria!

April 30th, 1595. Ivoria has capitulated to the royal army of Fez.

June 21st, 1595. Kano surrendered.

February 24th, 1596. After an endless siege, Zaria fell to Fez. However, the peasants of Fez are exhausted yet again, and Benin has managed to continue harassing us and breaking our sieges. Nupa be covered by a detachment of men. The 11 thousand men to the west were intended to relieve pressure in Benin, but were diverted to deal with our rebellions.

15322893-031.jpg

April 3rd, 1596. Benin offers what Fez wants. Excellent...

15322898-40e.jpg

April 1st, 1598. A traveler told us of a land called the Congo. An April fools' jest, mayhap? Well, we shalt put that on our official maps.

15322902-970.jpg

July 25th, 1603. We hath commissioned an academy of fine arts at Fez. It shalt pay for itself in only ninety one years!

August 21st, 1603. The war having been concluded, and our rebellions quelled, our king Ahmad II hath laid down his scepter and crescent, and retired to scenic Tangiers. Muhammad III "the weak" shalt now rule our great nation. Fez needs a great administrator to convert the heathen negroes in Ivoria, not this dunce.

Clever use of the Niger river to get some favourable battles. Glad that the rebellions didn't harm your offensive too much. And the prize for winning the war was everything you could have hoped for. :D

Having a fine arts academy in Fez was a good idea. Stability costs must have increased a lot with the acquisition of wrong cultured and pagan provinces.

July 19th, 1605. Our Manufactory be complete. We hath also established cantonments in Say (near Timbuktu) to combat the weak man power in that region.

15322909-6f3.jpg

August 16th, 1606. Our southern subjects be quite enthusiastic about navies. The Merchants' guild of Lagos hath elected to celebrate their new government by bolstering the navy of Fez.

15322914-d2a.jpg

August 3rd, 1613. We have experienced deflation! (It's well over 30% now, because we can not control the gold inflation. One of our gold mines even became more valuable recently.)

15322932-64c.jpg

August 23rd, 1613. 'Abd Allah III, who be indistinguishable from his predecessor, now rules Fez. The enormous infantry army be there to prevent the constant rebellions in Tunisia from over running Fez, since about 80% of the time, rebels go for Kabylia. Spain never fails to reclaim the garrison.

15322936-2b7.jpg

April 28th, 1616. A conquistadore hath come to court for the sultan. We plan to send him to darkest Africa.

9366273-5ea.jpg

April 11th, 1617. Guinea colony founded. We know not who the bastard with the trading post may be.

15322954-c3f.jpg

September 11th, 1617. After 156 years at sea, the naval minister ordered commodore Jem to Tangiers to resupply, then on to west Africa to explore as possible.

15322955-c47.jpg

April 26th, 1623. The second Benin war: after being insulted a second time, we have initiated a second war on Benin for the purpose of allowing the conquistadore through Nigeria. Unfortunately, we are not prepared for this particular fight, but with good fortune Fez shall brush off this insolent, un-Islamic people and continue our exploration.

15322956-6a6.jpg

January 1st, 1624. Please welcome 'Abd Al-Malik III. Please! He needeth all the love you can muster.

15322957-41c.jpg

August 14th, 1625. In a burst of patriotic fervor, Ivoria has relinquished their heathen ways! Praise Allah and his prophet, Muhammad.

Good break getting your CoT province to convert by event like that! This Empire of Fez as of the early 17th century is quite different from that small piece of land struggling to survive during the first hundred years of this AAR...

Hmm, those damned Spanish won't let Al-Djazair go - I did not expect that.

If you're getting a lot of inflation from gold, you should try to increase your income so the inflation will be reduced. Trading is usually an effective way to stop it. IIRC you get inflation from gold if the income from it makes up over 40% of your total income.

Happy to see that you got an explorer. Be sure to send him to the provinces in Congo that you haven't explored yet, if you have time. :)

Jem must surely be finding it odd to experience dry land. If each generation is 25 years then he ought to be about a 6th generation who has been on board that ship all their lives. Nice to get an event converting Ivoria, on the other hand it would have been good to convert the pagan province normally so that the culture changed.

wow,

just caught up with this AAR and impressive to see a project over two years old still running pretty consistently. Impressive development with such a country! Be it that I follow this ;)

@Duke of Wellington
Reminds me of that Robert Heinlein book about the children of space explorers who mutinied and forgot they were on a ship.

@Olav
Fez would like to trade, but still lacks a few bits which will allow trading to be worth our while. Some day...year...maybe!

Back to our scheduled programming!!

January 1st, 1626. Next through the revolving door of Fez be Muhammad IV! Benin be preparing to offer a fresh tribute to atone for their sinful transgressions against righteous Fez.

10201028-8d7.jpg

December 24, 1632. After a truly endless war, we have brought Benin to its knees. Endless. Not worth the expense.

10201029-adc.jpg

Fez shalt now annex these heathen.

10201030-cb0.jpg

July 16th, 1635. Hmm, this be interesting. Mali have forsaken Allah and his prophet, Mahomet. Quite interesting.

10201031-3e1.jpg

January 1st, 1637. Here be Muhammad V, along with France invading Mali. Muhammad V and his new council of advisors be displeased with this development. France oversteps their bounds again and again, claiming lands which clearly belong to Fez.

10201032-e8c.jpg

February 6th, 1641. We have commissioned a fresh refinery in Ivoria. The finance minister be pleased to report that the economy of Fez now be large enough to absorb the gold inflation!

10201047-aa5.jpg

December 11th, 1646. New marshes hath been converted to fields in Ivoria, so that we have more people, more ducats, and more men from that area.

10201048-e4c.jpg

January 1st, 1647. Taxes this year were 152 ducats. A modest sum, but over a few years it adds to a substantial one.

June 2nd, 1647. Our frontier scouts report from our new colony at Casamance that France's colonies have suffered a revolt. Yes, it was France that tried to establish a trading post in Casamance and failed. We would be establishing new cities ourselves, but Fez lacks settlers. We may eventually address this, given enough centuries.

10201049-773.jpg

November 4th, 1647. Our minister of foreign affairs reports that The Netherlands have been in continious turmoil since their creation, remaining alive more so through "miraculous events" than any real military programme. Now these events appear to have ceased, since Munster occupies Zeeland.

10201050-ea8.jpg

December 25th, 1647. The finance minister reports that the repayment of a series of merchant loans in Ivoria has lowered our inflation by 5%. Since we no longer suffer inflation, our rate of inflation ought to be about 20%.

10201078-6f8.jpg

Some decent events there. Fez would really benefit from some colonists though. Expansion through Africa would become quite easy then, particularly as the income has picked up.

If you get a chance, post a political and a religious map of Africa. I'd like to see an overview of how Fez looks on those fronts. Converting any remaining pagan provinces wouldn't be the worst use for your income either, if only Fez could get a decent administrative monarch.

Decent events indeed. Inflation at 20% isn't so bad. Good to hear that the gold-inflation is taken care of.

It'll be interesting to see if France manages to liberate their colonies from rebel control, or if they will revolt away. It looks like it's Mali or you who are the primary target for defections. If Mali is pagan, it won't hurt so much if the colonies revolt to them, as you can go to war without too much reputation hit.

May 1st, 1651. The freedom loving rebels in Gambia hath pledged fealty to the sultan of Fez, Mohammad V! Hail Fez!

10304257-b72.jpg

August 1st, 1651. France went bankrupt. We have received reports that one noble faction in France be blaming lovely Fez for their financial troubles, the loss of France's "wonderful" income from the Gambia.

10304258-489.jpg

January 28th, 1653. A new conquistadore has come forth to serve Fez. We're not really sure what to do with him right now...

10304259-54a.jpg

Although we certainly have plans for those colonists.

January 26th, 1662. Fez has commissioned a new refinery in Timbuktu, after spending most of the 1550s paying for stability after unhappy peasants, unprovoked revolts, and incompetent sultans occurred.

March 22nd, 1669. ar-Rashid now rules Fez, and he be the most glorious enlightened ruler of Fez in centuries! All hail our new lord ar-Rashid.

10304260-ccf.jpg

(This would be an ideal time for some events - EUII doesn't model this at all, but in case you're wondering, Fez is apparently suffering from a sort of civil war here - Al-Rashid killed a certain Sultan Mohammad in 1664, his half brother, and captured Fez in 1666, but for whatever reasons doesn't assume the EUII throne until he captured Marrakesh, 1669.)

March 29th, 1672. Alas! Our talented warrior sultan hath slipped from his horse and perished! His half brother, Isma'il the great, now be the sultan of Fez. Isma'il be known for his extensive harem. Hail Fez!

10304261-7a1.jpg

October 22nd, 1675. After decades of "introductory letters" and inconvenient "royal hunts" and "diplomatic insults," Fez has decided to answer the Songhai Question, the answer being to fight them and annex their pathetic festering society to healthy Fez.

10304269-e1a.jpg

Here we can see infantry moving towards Gao, whilst cavalry are defending Bure from their attacks.

March 28th, 1676. Fez has forged its first cannon to breach the walls of Gao.

December 3rd, 1676. The annoying era of Songhai shalt now come to a close. Annexation time!

10304270-0e0.jpg

January 15th, 1678. The finance minister of Fez be involved in a global scheme to get ducats through trade. In the mean while he has allotted the income towards the treasury, so that missionaries can be sent, under our great sultan Isma'il, to convert the heathen in our south.

10304271-87d.jpg

July 10th, 1681. As you can see, Fez has become quite adept in the financial realm.

10304272-cb1.jpg

March 14th, 1681. After over 315 years at sea, the coastal watch be returning to port because of a future conflict at sea. Also, they are getting some fresh water and planks and stuff like that.

10304273-4ca.jpg

After I return from my bed chamber, I shall describe the latest challenge to rich Fez's soverignty. Guess who!!

Mali? Spain? :D If it is Spain it will surely be a tough fight, but it's always fun with a challenge. If you're lucky you might sink some of their ships so you get their maps of America. Seeing the presence of Fez over there would be great.

Heh, I always try to see how many months at sea I can rack up while in Friendly Waters. Haven't gotten that far, though. I usually need my navies before I get far into 4 digits. How can they have been at sea that many months when the game started in 1419? 262 years into the game and they've been at sea for more than 315?

Latest challenge... I can't begin to guess. You seem to be readying your navy though... Settling old scores with Spain maybe?

@Olav
Well, see, it's like this: I'm pulling the navy in because I don't have any place to put it they won't be attacked in. What is America? Where? What?

@Roastbeef
Good catch. You're right, that doesn't make sense. What can I say, I broke the game. They've probably been there since at least the early 16th. And the navy? They...are useless at this point, they've just been lighting sea zones and marking check boxes next to months at sea incorrectly. I'm moving them to prevent a haemorrhage of losses...

@FlorisDeVijfde
Ah, the vast lands of Fez may contribute only a small amount to the royal treasury, but General Jungle of Timbuktu will handle the defences!

FEZ GROWS UP

-

July 15th, 1681. Portugal has interfered with Fez for the last time. Their involvement in the affairs of Fez be legendary, but now they have begun a trade embargo against fair Fez. Fez will retaliate by occupying the vast, inappropriately located colonial empire of Portugal.

10318951-8d9.jpg

February 26th, 1683. Unfortunately, there be no fighting Portugal at sea, and Portugal be just as good as occupying remote colonies as we were. After receiving reports that colonel Fayoum was panicking in Nigeria, the royal cabinet settled for a white peace with the pigs of Portugal.

Don't panic!

June 24th, 1692. We hath commissioned a fresh refinery in Gao.

June 29th, 1697. Fez has gone to war with Mali over the issue of Fez's good reputation. A few days later, France decided it was joining in, and France of course has some idiot leader. So the situation be that Fez controls Awdaghost, and France has Jenne. This will probably take 150 years to resolve now.

10318952-27d.jpg

January 6th, 1701. Travelers have reported to the court of Isma'il the great of a very weak Russia. We couldn't care less.

10318953-401.jpg

By the way, Fez's unimportant ally, the Uzbek Kaganate settled with Mali, giving Fez Awdaghost and allowing France to annex Mali. Now the only solution be to whip France, the most advanced nation in the world when speaking of armies. Fez can not do this yet.

February 23rd, 1703. Unfortunately, the merchant exchange can only accomodate twelve merchants each year. We have asked the council of elders if this can not be changed, but they said there be no way to change this. In any case, "the ten monopolies of Fez" are renowned the world over!

10318954-3d7.jpg

Monthly revenue be about 200 ducats.

February 1st, 1708. The useless allies of Fez announced that we were going to go to war with the Crimea. Fez foolishly agreed...since Spain happens to be in the alliance with the Crimea! Fez will fight as well as she can to claim important provinces.

10318955-d48.jpg

June 2nd, 1708. The navy of Fez has won a couple of naval battles at the Canary islands, but Spain appears to have built too many soldiers in the mean while for Fez to capture the islands.

10318968-396.jpg

September 20th, 1708. Whilst Fez may be undone in that we can not get soldiers to where they will fight, our useless allies now call for war against Venice, and therefore France. Venice currently be the vassal of France. Enough of this alliance.

10318969-29f.jpg

October 11th, 1708. An army with cannon successfully crossed the strait of Gibraltar!

January 1st, 1709. According to spies, Fez's land technology equals that of Spain. Of course, their navies still sink ours.

May 1st, 1709. After difficulties including my ally making peace for twenty ducats from Austria, we have capured Andalusia!

May 13th, 1709. Huh. well, it's not what I would have offered or asked for, but you always do get more when the enemy be making the decisions!

10318970-3e9.jpg

May 15th, 1709. Greater Fez. Note how Tassaret linked the western lands of Fez with the other provinces.

10318971-7a0.jpg

Methinks the lesson here be that Spain and other Europeans are no longer too strong for Fez to attack.

October 7th, 1712. After a brief war with Portugal, in which Fez discovered that Portugal's navy be not Spain's, we captured the maps at Tago. We see here a nice looking Brasil, as well as fresh provinces to colonise as be so common to the new world. Fez received Granada, the Senegal and Douala, a colony which for some reason has a refinery. The Europeans are very nearly out of our hair.

10318972-517.jpg

The reconquest of Granada by Moorish forces, impressive. You've hit Spain hard. Your Timbuktu rainforests don't seem to be needed for defence after all, you could just level them to provide for wood for a fleet :)
