I know i am three years late but can u tell me how did u renamed those korps i mean the numbers? are there any tips for it :/ any pattern what number i should give to the newly made corps in roman?

There is one corps number that is not designated at the time the game starts. It might be III., but I can't remember for sure. The next one in line to be build is the XIV. however. Once you get the Anschluss event you actually get a XVII. and XVIII. Armeekorps from Austria afaik.

The XIX. could be your first tank corps, it was later renamed into Panzergruppe Guderian and formed the first tank army in Barbarossa.

One additional thing to keep in mind is that the 40th corps in the Wehrmacht was named wrongfully as the XXXX. Armeekorps.

In case I didn't actually get your question, the roman numerals are as follows:

I for 1, V for 5, X for 10, L for 50, C for 100, D for 500 and M for 1000.

You build a number like 17 by adding X V and II for 10 + 5 + 2 and get XVII for 17. The same goes for 32 which is XXXII.

If you are close to 10 for a decimal place you substract instead of adding. For example 9 is IX for 1 less than 10. The same works for numbers close to 5, where you get IV for 4, or XIV for 14, and so forth.

The numbers are:

I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X,
XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XX,
XXI, XXII, XXIII, XXIV, XXV, XXVI, XXVII, XXVIII, XXIX, XXX,
XXXI, XXXII, XXXIII, XXXIV, XXXV, XXXVI, XXXVII, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XL,
XLI, XLII, ...

I am sure you can see the pattern emerge. However as I said the Wehrmacht named them XXXX instead of XL and XXXXX instead of L.

The Roman numerals can be tricky if you don't know how they work. They are:

I=1
V=5
X=10
L=50

You add the numbers together like this: XXV. Armeekorps=10+10+5=25th army corps.
However, if there is a smaller number in front of a larger number, you detract it, in this fashion: IV. Armeekorps = 5-1=4th army corps.

So the pattern is this:

I=1
II=2
III=3
IV=4
V=5
VI=6
VII=7
VIII=8
IX=9
X=10

and so on. Romans didn't put more than three times the same number behind one another. In other words, while the German army had the XXXX. Armeekorps, this was actually wrong and should have been XL (50-10). So last year was MMXIV (1000+1000+10+(5-1))=2014. Next year will be MMXVI (1000+1000+10+5+1

You can rename your corps however you want. It's just a way of helping you to keep things nice and organised. If you can see at a glance that you have 15 corps HQs and you know that there are 4 divisions per corps, then you know you have 15x4=60 divisions. If it works better for you to simply use arabic numerals, then by all means do so. It's your game, after all.

The one that is not assigned at game start is the III. Armeekorps.
I have not used the actual German designations. Instead I prefer to simply restart numbering corps HQs by their role. So I have a serial for infantry, another for panzerkorps, another for mountain corps. The game is hard enough to teach, without adding the quirks of the German designations to the mix.

hmm ok thx but i actually get confused at changing the new corps numbers to roman numerals i mean what roman number i should give to new corps? cuz i saw that all of your korps were in roman numerals so any tips for this problem? :/

Now I get it. The number assigned to a new corps by the game does not matter. You just follow your own numbers. Whenever you create a new corps, the game will check to see what numbers exist. Because you use Roman numerals, it simply assigns the first number on it's internal list, which is "1st Corps". You simply change that to be whatever follows your own system. So if I have 20 infantry corps and then create a new one, I rename it into "XXI. Armeekorps"" because the one before that, was "XX. Armeekorps". For the sake of completeness, I use "Armeekorps" for infantry, "Panzerkorps" for mobile units and "Sicherungskorps" for garrisons and such.
So, if you create a new corps, you either write it down on a piece of paper, or you look at your OOB to see what the new number should be.
Sorry about the confusion. I hope this helps. Let me know if it doesn't.

edited to add: it helps to always have the same number of divisions in your corps. If you always have 4 divisions in a corps, and you know that you have 60 divisions, that means that division 61 will be part of the 16th corps or XVI. Armeekorps.

yes i did this before ur reply i saw that biggest number was XII korps from the default and i created 2 new and now i renamed them to xiii and xiv now i get i just have to keep increasing the number with every new Armeekorps i create but thanks again m8:) oh one last thing what name i should give to marine corps and fighter wings bomber wings? i keep my fighters, bombers, cas planes separate btw

Interceptors=Jagdgruppe
Tactical Bombers=Kampfgruppe
CAS=Sturzgruppe
Transport planes=Transportgruppe

I never created a marine corps in my tutorial, but the Germans had a Marine-Infanterie-Division in '45, so I guess Marine-Infanterie-Korps would be ok.

In general, the term Luftflotte (+1 arabic number) is most appropriate. Obviously, historically nobody built homegenous Luftflotten as the game incentivizes to do in HoI and hence there is no accurate term. You either use the terminology for the smaller parts with ... gruppe or you have to create names with ...flotte.
I would rather call the tactical bombers Schlachtgruppe and CAS should be called Sturzkampfgruppe as no German would ever call an airforce group with the fatal connotation "Sturz" alone. German names are long, you better get used to it ...

As far as Marines are concerned:
In WWI Germany called them "Marinedivision"
The secret unit Misterbean ist referring to in WWII was called Marinestosstrupp (did I mentioned that German combined wors can get long?).
Nowadays, such divisions are called Marineschutzdivision or Marineeinsatztruppe (already got used to the length of the names?)

I took the name for the marines from the website Feldgrau, where the division was called 1. Marine-Division.
I know about German composite words, but just calling it "Sturz" is good enough for me.
Again, I love going all historical in my own games, but as long as you know what's what, that's ok. If someone want to call their strategic bombers the "pears and apples force", that's fine by me.

edited to add: The term "flotte" refers to the entire airforce, right? Like the US had 15 "airforces" by the end of the war, Germany starts the war with 4 "airforces" or "luftflotten".

They had "gruppen" (single plane in-game), who were combined in "geschwader" (an in-game squadron) or vice versa, I always get those 2 mixed up. Every "flotte" had fighters, bombers, dive bombers and so on.

edited to add: They were organised geographically. I believe that it was Luftflotte 2 who were kept in the west to keep up the pressure on the British isles after Barbarossa was launched.

That's it. And since geschwader are too small for in-game purposes, I do it this way.

I wish the game automatically used Roman Numerals for Corps numbers/

I searched for an HOI 3 Germany tutorial and found this thread :) I loved Ironhead's HOI 2 tutorial, so this looks perfect. However, none of the images are showing :( I see a small box with "IMG" in it. Have the images been deleted from wherever they were hosted?

Yeah, that host service ended for some reason or other and I no longer have the screenshots. You should still be able to download it as a pdf from the link in my signature. It's a big file, though. Sorry about that.

edit: I just checked and the link seems broken. I will try to set up a new link tomorrow. Sorry about the confusion.

Geschwader = 4-8 planes
Gruppen = 30-40 Planes (consisting of several Geschwader)
Flotten = all Gruppen in a certain region

That's it. And since geschwader are too small for in-game purposes, I do it this way.

FYI, the smallest unit used in game is the Geschwader (air wing), comprised of Gruppen (squadron), usually one to three +
Grouped together, the Geschwader will form a Fliegerkorps.
The next level is then the Luftflotte (usually 2+ Fliegerkorps)
Different Luftflotten can be combined into a Luftwaffenkommando.

Actually, that's not true, going by the names of the starting wings for Germany: JG 1 and so on. They are Gruppen.
At any rate, it's all speculation on our part. In HOI IV, at least, we'll know exactly how many planes we have. Now we can really attempt to keep up with historical production.

Actually, JG stands for JagdGeschwader and the order they appear on the list in game does, more or less, correspond to their creation IRL.
For instance, JG1 was formed from the 1st Group of the JG103 (I/103)

Sorry for being a stickler in such a sad day for Belgium.
