    YEAR 2026

A nervous buzz of excitement washed throughout the Royal Chamber for Space Exploration. Hurried and hushed clicks spread from corner to corner, with the more adept Neborite punching in line upon line of code as the time on the screen ticked steadily down. Slowly at first, then quickening, the pounding release of spores and gas of every physicist, programmer and engineer in the room rose into an exciting crescendo.

The Grand Station of Balawar was nearing completion, and with it the kingdom would finally be able to project itself into the void of space.

Amidst the cacophony of bleeping and yelled commands the King's Guard marched fiercely down the gated steps, knocking aside some bumbling Neborite rushing between desks. A shrill order silenced the room, announcing the presence of King Vaglogg Yu'll IV. A silence swept over the room momentarily as the gathered mass acknowledged their leader's presence before instantly returning to their turbulent ways.

King Vaglogg himself was a towering fungoid, easily forming a colony of billions and billions of Neborite bacteria over 20 feet. He had been the main patron of the united Neborite attempts to spread their influence to space, along with hundreds of other members of the nobility and elite. Vaglogg had been alive for several hundred years now, so far to now avail.

    Until now.

"Igoriim" Splurted the King, amused to see the scientist break out of his work to respect him.

"My highness," Igoriim replied, "The final civilian ship is due to disembark in 20 minutes to bring the final controls and what-not to Balawar, at which point..." Igoriim broke into a smile.

"Our journey will finally be complete." Finished Vaglogg. "The Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul shall finally be able to manifest it's destiny across the galaxy."

The two of them turned to look at the bleeping clock, counting down the minutes until a new start to the galaxy would begin.

Hello everyone, and welcome to my new AAR (and first one in Stellaris!). This is an idea I've had for a while, and it's a story that I'm excited to share with you all.

The concept is that the game starts with no AI empires at all, and with a primitive pre-FTL civilization occupying almost every system. This AAR will follow the rise of each empire as they break out of the bonds of their homeworld and forge their new empires in the stars.

I'm going to keep this opening episode brief, but I plan on updating this story every 5 years in-game (so 2030, 2035, 2040...) and the state of the galaxy at that moment. So far in 2026 the first civilization has made it to space, the Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul, but they won't be alone for long. Very soon new empires will fill the void and join them.

Lastly, it's been a while since I made one of these, so my only aim is to improve as the story develops. With that said, I'll see you in 2030!

    2030: Evandari Alliance
  • YEAR 2030

    2127, Tavkaleba, Trinnick System

Skamel dug his arms into his pockets, protecting his freezing hands from the spray as the plucky motorboat weaselled it's way through the churning waves. He kept his eyes down, exhausted from the days work plunging for fish, and now looked forward to returning home where he and the many other men on the boat could finally wind down for the day.

The island on which he lived was not too far from the fisheries, and as he turned to look out towards the sea he was hit by the beauty of Mt. Moji's overbearing visage, solemnly standing sentinel across the archipelago. Winding trees wrapped around and up the rocky cliff as they pumped the mountain of it's rich water, the water which had brought so much wealth to his people throughout the centuries. A warm feeling rushed over Skamel; he had been to many political events and rallies throughout Tavkaleba, but nothing had ever come close to returning home to his family and that fine mountain.

The motor spluttered as the driver pulled into harbour. A few of the men muttered between them, wishing them a good night's sleep before they were up again tomorrow. Some threw up cursory glances at Skamel, who had always been the more eloquent among them, but today he could do no more than lift his snout in acknowledgment. Slowly the fishermen filed out onto the dock, where their various catches would be processed and sent to their Supreme Leader Krooslav in Dinland as a form of taxation. Skamel let out a muttered curse as he sat waiting for his bus. The elites in Dinland had forever drawn his criticism, and whenever he had a chance to go on a break from fishing he would sail out to various archipelagos in order to speak and hold rallies, calling for political change and the adoption of a social state and of the late Telamur's teachings. He had become a relatively well-known figure, but he was not a big enough figure to draw the government's attention. Other 'activists' like him were always causing trouble, but only those who really stepped too far out of line were reprimanded. In the end Skamel tried not to think about it too much, but evidently it proved impossible not to thus far.

Suddenly Skamel realised that he had been staring at the government officials going through their catch with contempt for a while now, and sheepishly turned away hoping no-one saw him while he was deep in thought. Looking around he noticed most of the other fishermen had already caught his bus, and the few that were still waiting were mostly interested in their own devices. However, to Skamel's dismay, one man sitting opposite him had noticed his anger, and for all Skamel knew had been eyeballing him for a while now. Skamel recognised him as one of the 'plungers' of the crew, who swam down below the surface and did much of the heavy-lifting and brunt of the work, but since they were in different fields of work he did not know much else about him, let alone why he had so much interest in him now.

Skamel tried to avoid eye contact, but the man knew that he noticed him, and in lumbering steps came to sit next to Skamel.

"You're Skamel, right? From tech assistance?" The man asked in a gruff voice.

"Aye, that's right," He replied, shuffling in his seat to give the man some space. "You're one of the plungers, aren't you? Sorry, but I don't think I caught your name..."

"It's Fendelwier." He replied, letting out a hearty chuckle. "Bit of a stuck-up name, I know, but my mother thought that a good name would get me far in life." He motioned towards where the battered boat had been anchored on the dock. "A lot of good that's done me, that's for bloody sure. You can call me Fen."

"Fen it is then." Skamel cheerily replied. "Fendelweir… where did you grow up, the Steps?"

"Near enough, yeah. My parents came from relatively higher-up socially, but that was before the whole 'United Tavkaleba' shitstorm." Skamel could feel the frustration when Fen mentioned 'United Tavkaleba', a motion among the leading governments some 50 years ago to bring them all under the jurisdiction of the UNT in Dinland, where the world leaders and elites now governed their lands. It had been popular at the time, but the increased taxation caused by the increased need of infrastructure and administration tore down many well-off families, creating massive slums across many cultures and colonies. The island of Mt. Moji was no exception.

Skamel sighed. "That whole pisstake should never have happened. There's been no social structure for the last three decades on our islands, and we've been having to go further and further out to sea just to live a decent life."

"Exactly." Fen grinned, happy that Skamel had agreed with him. "I knew you would say this, Skamel, because I've been to your rally in Oluwa. You're a great speaker, and you could be a great leader. Someone to lead the fishers, the miners, the down-trodden..."

"A leader? You..." Skamel lowered his voice, realising what he was saying, "You want a revolution?"

"Don't you?" Fen asked. "Can't you feel it among our men? Our families? United Tavkaleba was the worst evil that had ever occurred to us, and communities like ours need hope that it won't always be like this. You're a far better orator than you might realise, and you'd be the leader we would need. Every time I've talked to the guys about it they've all agreed; things have to change here. Not just here, but for every Evandari across the world."

"We'd need more than just a few disgruntled fishermen Fen. Don't get me wrong, I've had this idea many times myself, but I don't think it's feasible..."

"Of course it's feasible!" Fen's eyes started to light up uncontrollably. "You just got to get people to know that this is a real thing they can get behind, not just some spontaneous uprising with no leadership."

"And how am I meant to do that?" Skamel asked.

Fen smiled. "You speak to them."

    ---

Across the next few years Skamel and his allies were hard at work. Renaming himself 'The Orator' in order to protect his identity he lead rally after rally, firing up hundreds - thousands, sometimes - of hopeful men and women. Soon hushed whisperings of the Orator and his band of misfits spread across the entire planet, shared during family dinners and discourses in pubs. His exploits spread so quickly that he took on an almost mythical feeling - the brave and noble Orator and his band of merry men on a quest to defeat the evil dictator. People flocked to his speeches, and when they were banned he just carried them on in secret - on the beach, in homes, once even out at sea!

The Orator soon became the most wanted criminal in Tavkaleba, and he had to spend his days on the run, planning his next big exploit. Videos and clips of his debates were watched by millions online, even when they were banned. After 6 years of living in secret it seemed like the wild idea at the bus stop might not be as wild as it first seemed.

If Skamel could've had it his own way he would've bided his time, but several events both presented him an opportunity and forced him to step out of hiding. A massive, yet premature rebellion had broken out in the Yotun Archipelago, and several member states of the UNT either left or broke apart due to internal pressure. Several key figures reached out to Skamel urging him to move now against the UNT and Dinland, some saying they wouldn't wait for him if he said no. Skamel knew that a coordinated, early attack was better than a well-timed yet confused one.

On the Winter of 2133, the Great Revolution had begun.

Skamel, as the Orator, released a worldwide call for immediate action against their corrupt government, and called for all good Evandari to take whatever weapon they could to fight off the elitist threat. Gathering forces both at Mt. Moji and Oluwa, and waiting for the response from his foreign allies, the revolutionaries launched their grand, metallic fleet on course for Dinland.

Even before arriving the Orator received news that the Yotun Revolution had finally succeeded, with the Dinnish-friendly government having capitulated and the last noble executed. Mass panic spread throughout the nations still allied with the government, as they had been utterly unprepared for war - one of the unfortunate downsides of government censorship is that the Dinnish civilians thought the revolutionary threat was far weaker than it truly was.

By the time the Orator's fleet came within striking distance of Dinland anarchy had already gripped it. One of his foreign allies had already arrived and had begun bombarding the island towns with shot and shell, and when they arrived at Dinland proper there had been barely any resistance at all. Revolutionaries within the capital had succeeded in preventing a strong resistance from forming, and within hours the Orator's army broke into Harlow Tower, where the dictator worked. He had already committed suicide when the revolutionaries defeated his guard.

Skamel felt a surge of electricity flow through his body. Standing upon the balcony where the foul dictator had delivered so many speeches, he at last knew that he had brought about a new, better age for all Evandari. Both proud revolutionaries and scared civilians looked up to him, where he prepared to deliver the first of his many speeches as the new leader of the Evandari Alliance.

The year is now 2030, and many new Empires have risen up to stake their claim upon the galaxy.

    6EA75F22D27096BA324079676EE7A249EDA82C3E

Of course, the Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul was the first, forming their stellar empire in 2226. They are xenophile, spiritualist, collectivist and fanatic elitist (I'm using a mod that adds more ethics and civics, I forgot to mention this in the first instalment). Their government revolves around a king with extensive prerogatives and several constitutional laws he must abide by. This kingdom is unique in the fact that, although they have an entrenched aristocratic elite, they also have a grand social and welfare state for the working-class. In fact, they arguably have much more in common with socialist states than fellow elitists.

They also highly regard the internet and those who can master code and programming, to such a degree that it's become almost an art form. Those who wish to move up through the ladder of society generally learn to code, as this is their best bet to gain fame among the tech-fanatics within the empire.

However, many other civilisations were soon to join them in their enlightenment...

    Hahn-Mur State

    CD7D0507FDA5DE60C0574FD19F3F364C811DD5F6

    Leader: Chief Precentor Huuregdhe

    Species: Hahn-Mur

Ethics: Authoritarian, Fanatic Spiritualist, Collectivist, Ecologist (Theocratic Oligarchy)

Throughout their entire existence the Hahn-Mur placed incredible importance on nature and maintaining the balance of the various eco-systems across Jurg-Shondaar (their homeworld). Their state religion, naturally therefore, placed great importance on the critical balance between Hahn-Mur and the 'Biomes', the various essences that give each landmass life. The early part of their history was wrought with the various monarchs spreading the Faith of the Biomes across the entirety of Jurg-Shondaar, which to this day almost every citizen believes in.

In recent years, there's obviously been the question of how to get sufficient power. Media conglomerates, who had been getting steadily stronger over the years, invested heavily in environmentally safe ways to produce energy. Eventually the leading media station, HMBS, devised an intrinsic model of a new solar panel that required far less energy for massive energy returns, and with the profit made from this HMBS came to dominate the entire capitalist landscape of the world, eventually fusing to become a subset of the government itself, which allows the authoritarian government to relay to their people exactly what they want them to hear.

    Sacrosanct Vhemm Confederacy

    1F6BE06EFC296E2A31FE90A62A0A769B6F5B180C

Leader: Revered Elder Nushie-Noo Nip (what a name).

    Species: Vhemm

Ethics: Fanatic Xenophile, Spiritualist, Fanatic Elitist

While the modern-day state of the Vhemm is an indirect democracy, many Vhemm still have not been given the vote, which have been reserved for landowners and the social elite. Among the cities and areas where poverty and crime are high armed police forces are on daily patrols, keeping any potential threat from rising among the unwanted of society. The religion of the state was also another aspect of the nobility's lifestyle; while the wealthy attend regular rituals and pray with earnest zealousy, the poor remain staunchly against faith (in general), considering it a method to blind them from their hardships.

The nation runs on great leadership. Those born into respected families or display great capabilities are groomed at an early age to lead, whether it be in the sciences, military of in the government itself. The way that their colleges are run encourage liberal and xenophilic thought among the elite, but they are well-guarded from the plight of the unfortunate.

    Endurga Civilization

    C613EAD2F86D52B08E6377930EF72353F53C8D7B

    Leader: Optimate Bagglosch

    Species: Endurga

Ethics: Fanatic Materialist, Industrialist, Fanatic Elitist (Aristocracy)

The Endurga are incredibly similar to the previously discussed Vhemm, with much the same regard towards the poor and the same police force squashing any dissent there may be towards the aristocrats. However, the government in Endurga take this a step further, actively and politically separating the wealthy from the poor and refusing to give in to any demands the working-class may have, for fear that if they change one thing then a domino-effect would occur and the state would descend into anarchy. Therefore the government is entirely composed of the aristocratic elite and serve only their interests.

One key point of difference with the Vhemm is the Endurga's fanatic devotion to science and rationality. There had been faiths and pantheons on Shlargh (homeworld), but none had ever formed a structured religion. By the time the Industrial Revolution hit, the capitalists and scientists entered a renewed enlightenment, exploiting the poor in factories and rapidly advancing the sciences, giving them the key to absolute power (much to the dismay of the working-class).

    Evandari Alliance

    E7D8AED0402AB74D220EC93CE9100F86E60A32F8

Leader: First Speaker Kunrig den Harak

    Species: Evandari

Ethics: Fanatic Libertarian, Xenophobe, Fanatic Collectivist (Anarcho-Communism)

After the death of the Orator in 2178, Kunrig den Harak stood up to replace him. A young man at the time, he brought bold new ideas to the Evandari Alliance. Knowing that their time in the galaxy was soon to come, and sensing (correctly) that alien societies would not approve of their dogma, he reformed the government into something wholly more Xenophobic. The revolutionaries that had deposed the old government of Dinland had adopted an ideology entirely more imperialistic and nationalistic.

On the eve of their first manned flight into another system, Kunrig den Harak promised to all Evandari that their Communist way of life, which had restored peace and stability to their civilization, would not be threatened by any extra-terrestrial threat - rather, he believed that it was the duty of all good Evandari to liberate the working-class of any elitist and alien government they come across and spread their form of Anarcho-Communism across the entire galaxy!

Workers and farmers! The rise of the Evandari is nigh!

    Hythean Alliance

    4131224E506B2C298FD9463EC480409AC4FC2459

    Leader: Commissary-General Dov'gil

    Species: Hythean

Ethics: Fanatic Militarist, Fanatic Spiritualist, Egalitarian (Military Commissariat)

The entire history of the Hythean was wrought with war, with historical and infamous leaders marshalling their forces to conquer huge expanses, only for their empires to crumble to dust after their death. Generals fought to spread their glory and faiths, until at one point during the late-Medieval period (for them) Rolakur the Great had conquered or subjugated the entirety of the known world, enforcing his pagan beliefs upon every subject of his endless empire.

Many have attempted to recreate Rolakur's great empire, and only recently has it been achieved following the union of four of the more powerful nations, promising to work together in order to subjugate the rest of the world. Predictably, their empire lasted about as long as every other attempt, falling to a large-scale revolt from their own military. Disgruntled by the idea of peace and the apparent regression from their spiritualist values, several high-ranking military commanders launched a successful coup which brought the entire world under the regime of the new military commissariat, ruled over by the newly appointed Dov'gil the Iron-Hand.

They now hungrily look to the rest of the galaxy, searching for their next big war...

    Alliance of Poqats

    23ADCF20578A8FE791CE823CC8C83B49482AC13B

    Leader: President Lakitrak

    Species: Yv'Zorak

Ethics: Libertarian, Militarist, Spiritualist, Fanatic Collectivist (Social Democracy)

While the early ages of the Yv'Zorak were ruled by monarchies, religion and conservatism, they gradually developed into a form of government entirely built around the welfare of it's populace and the protection of each citizen's rights. Living on the harsh, frozen world of Poqats the Yv'Zorak had always been reliant on mining and warfare, with many famous crusades spreading their religion to be the majority across much of the world.

However, with the advent of the Industrial Revolution the great Miner's Strike began. Unhappy with their wages and representation in their governments miners across the world took part in a great strike, crippling the economies that had been so reliant on their work. As a result most countries gave in within the first week, and over time developed to become one of the most liberal and free-thinking governments in the entire galaxy.

    Tuxkan Divine Foundation

    6A312048FFA46D7DD54DB7B2C62A16707E991435

    Leader: Matriarch Aki Pripp

    Species: Tuxkan

Ethics: Fanatic Authoritarian, Militarist, Fanatic Spiritualist (Theocratic Dictatorship)

Built around their spiritualist beliefs, the TDF's form of government is run by the appointed Matriarch/Patriarch with strong support from the state religion, which emphasizes abstinence of worldly pleasures. The Tuxkan regime revolves largely around the slave trade providing the ruling-class their necessities and supporting them in their largely work-free life.

    Menjeti Theocracy

    B33E16AD5B43AEA715B67CEDEAD8F9840F92765E

    Leader: Patriarch Smeggle

    Species: Menjeti

Ethics: Xenophile, Militarist, Fanatic Spiritualist, Egalitarian (Theocratic Dictatorship)

The Menjeti are going through a particularly divisive period in their history. Their united world government is over 150 years old before entering the space age, with strong traditional links unifying the disparate cultures of Schplorp (homeworld). However, while the state is supposed to be democratic, for the past 55 years the political climate has been dominated by Smeggle and his Reform Now party. Political intrigue was a part of daily life in the Menjeti Theocracy, and Smeggle used political alliances and snap elections to increase his majority to the point where he is now the de-facto Patriach of the entire nation.

The new dictatorship, however, has not pleased many of even his own supporters. Smeggle relies on his support from labour unionists and the liberals in order to keep is rule afloat, but many even in his own party don't believe his theocratic dictatorship would last far into the future.

    ---

That's the state of the galaxy as of 2030. Thanks for reading all of that - I know it's been a long chapter, but since this is my first Stellaris AAR if there is anything you'd like me to elaborate more on or any criticisms in general fell free to let me know. With that said, see you all in 2035!

State of the galaxy as of 2030

    2035: Jaazijan Assembly of Planets
  • YEAR 2035

    2031, Wum Jiam System

"For the last time, can all delegates please take their seats and remain silent!"

Shrill, high-pitched cries of debate rang around the Trade Union Congress board of the Jaazijans, an avian race that had only just heralded the discovery of FTL travel a few months ago, towards the end of 2030. The Jaazijans had long shared their homeworld of Kitrel in peace and harmony, but it had been only recently that their nations came together as one for the good of peace and trade.

For years the standard of living skyrocketed and the economy was booming, and before long the first united efforts to explore their surrounding space began, to exploit the surrounding systems of their minerals and, if possible, to find worthy trade partners. They had been hopeful to find friends in a previously dark and empty galaxy.

What they found instead sowed fear into every society and Jaazijan on the planet.

The first interstellar probe they sent travelled to the Veit system, to their galactic-north, in order to investigate several radio patterns that could potentially come as a result of sentient life. Hundreds of scientists huddled in expectation as the probe drew near to it's target, but as soon as it entered the system's space a loud ring sparked through the transmitter, followed by radio silence. Either the probe had been struck by an asteroid or a solar flare, or something... someone had destroyed it on purpose.

The question was answered only two days later. Every radio station on Kitrel tuned in to a mysterious, extraterrestrial signal, strong enough to reach the entire planet, played the same repeated message over and over:

"Pay attention, sinister aliens; we are the Orassian Shard, a grand culture alive millions of years before you learned how to bang rocks together. You've made your homeworld within our rightful buffer-zone, an area maintained thusly for millenia. Know you are now a threat to the Orassians. Know that we shall deal with you accordingly."

    A9309AB1A98F8F51D7626F2D455CBB98185874FE

Naturally, panic ensued. For a month society crumbled as reports of the vast strength of this 'Orassian Shard' was truly put into perspective; they had ships that were millions of years ahead of theirs, armed with technology forever beyond their reach. The age-old Jaazijan rhetoric of 'peace before anything else' was thrown into doubt as many TUC leaders (correctly) assumed that peace with the Jaazijans would be completely impossible, and that they would either have to fight them, somehow, or manage to relocate to a planet outside of their 'buffer-zone'.

"Mr Speaker," shouted one unruly delegate, "These... things are impossible to defend against. Pacifism won't work against an enemy that refuses to negotiate whatsoever!"

"Mr Cruji, your concerns are noted," replied a weary First Speaker Triik, an aged and experienced politician, yet utterly clueless as to how to deal with this existential threat. "But I must ask you - and EVERYBODY HERE - to calm down so that-"

"-Mr Speaker, now is not the time to-"

"-we need to stay coordinated here-"

"-Order, everbody, order!" Triik screamed, turning to each of the delegates arguing amongst themselves. He opened his beak to speak, but checked himself when he saw what was in each delegates eyes; pure, abject terror. He could feel the sense of dread from each one that nothing at all could be done to spare them from the onslaught. Not a soul in the room held hope of weathering the coming storm.

"Men of Kitrel, we've overcome our differences each time we've disintegrated into chaos. We pulled peace from the jaws of nuclear destruction, and equality from prejudice and inequality. A finer species than ours I have yet to find in the galaxy - no matter what they may believe. Although some of you may be encouraged to believe that war and retribution is our only option, in doing so we give these precursors reason to annihilate us entirely; peace is truly our only option-"

    "-But Mr Sp-"

"I will not hear any more of this talk. War has never worked for us. We must attempt whatever communications we can with this empire and hope that their terms allow our species to continue it's great existence, in whatever form they permit. Perhaps by cooperating they will be lenient. Certainly if we are combative they will not!"

The shrieking of the delegates picked up to new levels, but First Speaker Triik was not able to shut them up a second time. The raucous debate continued until a beleaguered Triik meekly called an end to the summit, prematurely.

    ---

21st of May was the day when the whole of Jaazijian society stood still. The Orassian ships touched down on Kitrel, their ancient design unlike anything the Jaazijians had ever seen before. The Jaazijian dignitaries, delegates and diplomats formed a queue to 'welcome' their extraterrestrial neighbours. Funny, thought Triik, I thought our first welcome of an alien species on our planet would be to discuss an alliance, not our unconditional surrender.

The Orassians were creatures somewhat smaller than Jaazijans and somewhat rodent-like, but the biggest difference was where there would be a joyful smile on the face of a Jaazijan there was a sneer of cold command on the precursors.

One obviously high-ranking Orassian turned to his lieutenant to whisper a few commands before addressing the leaders before him.

"Us Orassians have decided to spare your species from destruction this time, Jaazijans. However, now that you have the means to expand across the stars we expect you to do so; away from us. Colonise another planet, and once you do you must vacate Kitrel forever. You may kneel."

As one the defeated Jaazijans knelt before the aliens, humiliated and humbled. The old Triik was at the front of them all as First Speaker, and once the Orassian's speech was finished he pulled him in, adopted a tone wholly more hostile.

"We've listened to your abominable pleas, Triik, and we listened, only because you did not defy us willingly. However, if you pigeons step out of line we can obliterate you instantly and without remorse, understood?"

Triik could only nod to show he understood the gravity of the situation. "Good bird. As your superior I command you that your first and overriding purpose is to build a colony ship and to leave Kitrel. We shall return here every few years, and each time we find you have not left the planet we shall use the surface of Kitrel as target practice - our admirals have not seen war in millenia, and I fear their aim needs improvement if a larger threat were to present itself."

Triik gulped as the Orassians departed the alien world, almost as quickly and menacingly as they had arrived.

    ---

Elsewhere in the galaxy, a young Yv'Zorak of the Alliance of Poqats asked his mother a question in a shrill voice.

"Mother, are the aliens we found going to hurt us?"

"No, silly thing. They're amazing - they've built a wonderfully rich and powerful nation and they've sworn to protect us from any evil monsters there may be in outer space!"

"But what if they had been evil themselves?"

"That would never have happened!" The mother laughed to herself, "Any self-respecting empire that lasted that long would've ditched xenophobia millions of years ago!"

    ---

The years from 2030-3035 did not see as large of an explosion of pre-FTL species gaining enlightenment, but it did see our first technical war. The newly formed Jaazijian Assembly of Planets found itself right on the border of the Xenophobic fallen empire, the Orassian Shard. By 2035 they've already been defeated in one war against the Orassians, and assumedly the precursors re-declared war as soon as the peace treaty ran out. I wouldn't really put money on them to be imperialistic contenders (sorry to spoil it for you).

Only two other races entered the space age in this period; The authoritarian yet rational Gulk-Furki Empire, and the spiritualist Covenant of Maddfiv Vvada who use cyber brainwashing to enforce their doctrines upon everyone in the empire. No one has yet begun to expand out of their borders, although they certainly will once enough time has passed.

I want to keep the exposition section of today's instalment short because I don't have much time at the moment, but I certainly am expecting things to heat up in the galaxy over the coming weeks as nations start to explore outside their borders - will they find rich, beautiful planets or menacing aliens? Evidently the Jaazijans have already answered that question today.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed today's episode. If you haven't yet you may wish to choose an empire to support over this series (not the Anarcho-Communists though, they've stolen my heart). With that said, see you next time in 2040!

    2240: Hythean Alliance
  • YEAR 2240

    2039, Ulm System

Dussel was lazily flicking through a Science! magazine when the roll call siren wailed out yet again. In truth he had no interest in his magazine - the self-proclaimed 'scientists' who wrote it evidently had little knowledge about what they were talking about - but anything was better than attending yet another one of Captain Comodar's morning drill.

He allowed a few minutes to pass before picking himself up and stumble his way to the ship's bridge. He saw some of the younger members of the crew rushing ahead, full of the naivety from the inexperience of space travel. Of course, the Hytheans had been capable of space travel for little over a decade now, but as one of the leading geologists Dussel had been part of the early crew to survey the Ulm system and uncover every last scrap of information they could.

There was reason for excitement though. This would be the first voyage of any Hythean ship outside of the Ulm System, manned or otherwise. Dussel was naturally keen on the idea of being amongst the first to explore beyond Ulm, but he'd been on this ship for 7 months now and the crew had been driving him insane.

"Good morning everyone, and welcome to what will be your final day in Ulm for a long while!" Captain Comodar began. A eruption of excited chattering came from the novices, thrilled by the idea that they were soon to go interstellar.

Despite his usual cynicism, Dussel couldn't help but let out a smirk - to think that, in a matter of hours, they would see there own sun as a star in the night sky. What ancestors had spent millions of years gazing upon in wonder, Dussel would master in less than a day.

"Before we start today's drill, I cannot overstate how incredible you've all been as a crew. From the scientists who are now used to the regime of space research, down to those of you who have barely been out of the military academy, this achievement cannot have been done without any one of you." Dussel rolled his eyes at that; he could think of several useless cretins who this expedition would've been better without.

The morning continued on in this manner - the captain regaling in how wonderful they all were and how they would go down in history, followed by a strict training regime to keep with Hythean militaristic traditions. Then Dussel would go to his dorm and spend however much time he could by himself, since as a geologist he had little work to do during the travel. This meant that, while everyone else was frantically working to make sure everything was ready for interstellar travel, Dussel went back to lazily flipping through magazines.

Several hours went by until Dussel heard the intercom crackle with the news that the jump was imminent, followed by a pulsating boom as the ship began to get pulled along the hyperlane to the nearby Sehuetum System. Finally it truly dawned on Dussel the magnitude of what was occurring, and a weird feeling of boyish excitement overcame him.

He wasn't becoming one of those damned novices, was he?

The journey along the hyperlane, which spanned 6 light years, lasted little less than an hour. Soon the crew were informed that, at last, they had arrived at Sehuetum, the first alien sun they had ever seen. It glowed a bright blue, typical of a Class A star, but beautiful to see up close. Finally, the Hytheans could begin to unravel the secrets of the galaxy. As soon as that thought came into Dussel's head, one of the pilots approached the captain with a rather horrified expression.

"Sir, we've done our preliminary scans, and we've found... something that didn't come up previously-"

"What is it, Jikal?" Came the nervous reply of the usually joyful captain.

The pilot coughed. "Well, we don't know because it's refracting all our scans away from it, but since it's doing this there must be something."

"It must be some sort of rock that has this sort of property." Captain Comodar turned to Dussel. "Are there any such rocks that could do this sort of thing?"

"Yeah, if it's glass or crystal-"

"But sir!" The anxious pilot almost wailed. "It can't be! According to the scans, the thing is moving!"

The ship's bridge descended into a deathly silence as the pilot's map indicated that some sort of anomaly was leaving a large gap in their data, and that this gap was moving.

And that it was moving towards them.

The years 2235-40 marked the first time that the various alien empires explored the space around them. Although many have yet to dispatch science ships to discover the galaxy, those that have are giving themselves a massive advantage over the competition.

The most successful empire in this regard are the Hahn-Mar State, launching their first science expeditions early in 2236 and have since expanded there authority onto the systems they have explored, since no-one else nearby seemingly wanted to. Although their authority on this region is weak, they are definitely the strongest of the bunch so far.

The only other two to have expanded out of their home system in this period were the neighbouring Tuxkan Divine Foundation and the Menjeti Theocracy. Although there are no hyperlanes that connect them right now, it must surely be a matter of time before these two religious foundations discover each other.

In this shot is also the Commonwealth of Patraggor, the newly formed jingoistic regime that touts authoritarianism, xenophobia, militarism and elitism as it's main principles.

And so 2240 in our humble galaxy draws to a close, with the advent of new powers promising for an exciting future. Today's focus on the Hythean Alliance was because I noticed while I was running the game that they're entirely cut off from the galaxy, with their only route out of their home system being occupied by thousands of crystalline entities. So, RIP to their chances of becoming relevant.

Thanks for reading today's episode, and I'll see you next time in 2245!

The state of the galaxy in 2240

    2245: Hahn-Mur State
  • YEAR 2245

    2240, Bunda System

Pubgluurh stared out onto the alien world, taking in the rich beauty of the landscapes and colossal cities that sprawled across the surface. Of course, the designs and constructions here were not nearly at the same level as the mammoth monuments and acropolis back home on Jurg-Shondaar, but peeking into an entirely different culture - a different species, in fact - with so many wonderful designs was something that took Pubgluurh's breath away.

The primitive civilisation had been the reason the Bunda Observation Post had been built, to more closely study the 'Yax'Kalock' that ruled the grassy plains below. Due to the fact that the Yax'Kalock had already begun to experiment with Space Age technology, having had already launched a primitive form of space station orbiting their homeworld before the Hahn-Mur could arrive here, it had been an arduous and highly elegant task in order to build it without the Yax'Kalock noticing. First they built it remotely back in the space of Jurg-Shondaar, before applying state-of-the-art invisibility rays that warped light beams around it, allowing the scientists to get a close up of alien culture without risk of being found.

Pubgluurh had been among the first of the scientists to apply for a job on BOP, but by the time he was on it he found out that there was a significant catch - due to the fact that invisibility drives cannot be safely installed onto large moving ships, the scientists on BOP could not leave the station without running the risk of being spotted. The only outside contact they would receive were small drones carrying supplies in return for the information the scientists found out.

This had been going on for 7 years now, and although Pubgluurh often thought of his parents back at home, he never once regretted his decision. Being on the forefront of such discoveries into this foreign society was worth giving his life up for in Pubgluurh's eyes, and besides, it paid well. The scientists on the Observation Post lived a relatively comfortable life.

Which is why, late on in 2240, you can imagine how shocked Pubgluurh was when a massive Hahn-Mur ship had docked onto BOP, not even trying to hide itself from curious eyes on the surface below.

In panic Pubgluurh rushed to the Bridge of BOP, fearing that some outcast or interloper was interfering with their project, but what he found there instead was even stranger - a conglomerate of scientists and Priests of Natura, headed by none other than Chief Precentor Huuregdhe, leader and champion of the Hahn-Mur State.

Pubgluurh instantly dropped to his knees as he strained to listen to what he was talking about to the head of the Observation project. "-Well, at any rate, the higher-ups on Jurg-Shondaar have made it clear to me what the people want."

"But it would put the project at risk!" Whispered the scientist profusely, "It could put our entire civilisation at risk! You know from the reports we've sent home how warlike these beings are!"

"That can be dealt with in due time." The Chief Precentor waved away his protests. "But the High Priests of Natura have made it abundantly clear to us all how shameful it would be if we allowed the planet's life to succumb thanks to some pitiful war, a war that could only occur thanks to our isolationism."

"They're doing fine by themselves-" Squeaked the scientist.

"Enough!" Hushed Huuregdhe authoritatively, "Besides, the motion has already been passed on Jurg-Shondaar - this feat will go ahead." Hurregdhe cast his eye across to the prostrated Pubgluurh, who was still flat on the floor. "And can someone tell that man he needn't stay on the floor any longer?"

Awkwardly, Pubgluurh picked himself up and flittered by the door, as nervous as anyone who was suddenly thrown into the presence of his leader would be. In cold, commanding steps Huuregdhe made his way towards the fledgling scientist.

"And who might you be?" He asked, in a half-friendly, half-firm voice.

    "P-Pubgluurh, sir!" The scientist stuttered.

"Well, Pubgluurh, it wouldn't be befitting of your service to the state if you weren't informed on the current change in plan for your project" Pubgluurh's heart raced. What could he mean by 'change in plan'?

"The findings your crew have made on the Bunda Observation Post, along with the many subsequent posts built across our space-realm, have caused the populace on Jurg-Shondaar to form one majority viewpoint - if there are so many of these relatively advanced alien species, as there appears to be by our findings, then it makes sense that we will soon come across those at the same level as us technologically, does it not?"

    "Yes, sir!" Squeaked Pubgluurh.

"In that case, many thought it would be best to prepare ourselves for when that does happen, which involves getting all the help we can." The Chief Precentor drew close to Pubgluurh, breaking into a small, wrinkled smile. "Already the Yax'Kalock on the surface are standing stunned by the appearance of our ship. Imagine their appearance when you and all the rest of us descend down to officially greet them once and for all?"

    "You mean, we're going to-"

"Enlighten them, yes!" Huuregdhe grinned. "Soon our nation shall be rich with the ideas and technologies of species across Tawlor's Nebula, and if some evil comes knocking on our door, we shall be fully prepared to defend ourselves!"

"A foolish idea", muttered the head scientist from before.

"Silence!" Spat Huuregdhe, showing a rare side of himself, before turning himself once more to Pubgluurh. "So, what do you think?"

Pubgluurh thought about all the things he saw in the past 7 years - the construction projects, the children running along streets and in fields, laughing and cheering, all the wonderful things the Yax'Kalock have done. There was no doubt in his mind for what should occur.

"I think it's a great idea, sir." He beamed, before turning his attention back to the Chief Precentor, "Let's do it".

The years 2240-2245 marked a time of renewed expansion for many civilisations, as well as a plethora of new species rising up to the challenge that is FTL travel. Not only do we have the Hahn-Mur state enlightening multiple primitive species, but the Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul are officially the first nation to colonise an alien planet as well, founding the colony of Jurg-Wuudhal on a savanna world right next to their homeworld, and it's coming together pretty nicely.

We also have many new empires popping up throughout the galaxy, which I will try to go through quickly now:

    • The UNITED EKWYNIAN POLITY are fanatic xenophobe, fanatic militarist and individualist - yeah, they're basically that kind of species. They will look to spread their doctrine across the entire galaxy whilst simultaneously subjugating or exterminating all alien life. So the Jaazijans are now between two xenophobic nations who are stronger than them.
    • The VOOL AUTHORITY are fanatic authoritarian, individualist, and fanatic ecologist - although led by a dictator his powers now are largely constitutional, and the Vool will likely follow a doctrine of peaceful trading whereby they offload their vast power reserves for many rare goods across the galaxy.
    • The MULTYX UNITED REALMS are fanatic militarist, fanatic ecologist and egalitarian. Lead by a militaristic commissariat and traditional values, the Multyx also seek to expand across the galaxy, but will likely do so with far more honour and respect than the aforementioned Ekwynians.

Another interesting development is the rise of both the Obbha Imperial Domains and the Vat'na-Ka Civilization, whose home-systems are connected by a hyperlane. The Obbha is lead by a Communist Dictatorship, which is xenophile, fanatic pacifist and fanatic collectivist, while the people's republic of the Vat'na-Ka are authoritarian, fanatic collectivist and fanatic industrialist.

Seemingly these two empires could potentially get along, although with such little space in between them and with the much older and aristocratic Endurga Civilization likely hell-bent on eradicating their communist societies, will they band together to defend against the larger threat, or will the proximity between them be too much for either to bear?

    1D4B91505F697F34B7B78D80D006F980B5A83E27

There were a few other smaller empires that rose up as well, but for the sake of not overloading you with information I'll refrain from developing them until they become relevant to the story. Things are certainly spicing up in the galaxy with the empires set to come to contact with their galactic neighbours, and those who were first to rise up already setting themselves apart from the chasing pack. Already it appears that nations such as the Hahn-Mur State, the Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul and several others are setting themselves up to be the frontrunners for galactic superpowers, but you never now - one of the newer nations could get lucky and overtake them in the race for supremacy.

With that said, the stage is set for the oncoming years. Thanks for reading, and I'll see you soon in 2250!

    2250: Tuxkan Divine Foundation
  • YEAR 2250

    2250, Moah System

The whirring of the hovercraft over the alien planet provided the only soundscape as Pripp Ozoza stared in wonder at the lands below.

She had been recruited by the renowned patron Caratus to scout the planet of Trimi-Trimi for alien wildlife to put on display back on Blorp and, judging by the rarity of such an offer, she eagerly leapt at the chance to scour the planet for biological anomalies. The colony on Trimi-Trimi was still in it's early days, so there was still much to be left discovered on the cold planet, and who knows, she could make the discovery to propel her scientific career to the next level.

That was how she came to find herself travelling aboard Caratus' hired hovercraft, along with the man himself and many of his closest slaves. So far the planet proved mostly desolate, with whatever life they found proving to be mostly carnivorous in order to survive in the nigh-inhospitable ecosystem of Trimi-Trimi, but there had been a few findings that proved interesting; a kind of lichen that could melt ice, and a lively type of insect that exploded when it sensed that danger was near, a capture that had injured many of the slaves in her care.

However, she had just received a lead that, if true, could prove to be nothing short of extraordinary. With the hovercraft booming along the surface at full-speed, she found herself gazing in awe and the landscape unfolding around her.

Pripp heard an agitated discussion take place behind her, so she broke out of her trance and turned to see Caratus hobbling towards her, wrapped in layers of clothing. "We better be close to arriving." He asserted, sniffling with each word he spoke, "This god-forsaken planet is far to cold to be spending days out in the open!"

"Caratus, you ought to be more patient!" Pripp sighed, "Our next destination could very well be our last stop, if what the reports I've received are anything to go by."

"It better well be!" He hacked in response, "We've spent nearly a week on this damned vehicle, and you've come no closer to finding anything whatsoever to fill my collection."

"It's not my fault this planet is almost entirely desolate-"

"Yes it is!" Caratus snapped, "This is all your fault, Miss Ozoza! To think that I fell for your promises that you were the best in the field - how could I have been so daft! You, a women, being the best in the business!" He laughed and wailed, somehow finding humour in his insults.

Pripp shrank back into her shell ever so slightly as she held back tears. "I am the best..."

"Then prove it, Ozoza!" Caratus chided, "because you haven't given a good account of yourself so far!"

Caratus let off one final cough before he hobbled back to his chambers. Pripp held herself up for as long as she could before she crumpled down into a wailing heap. For several minutes she lay, with the mixtures of her tears and the ship's whirring pounding her brain, before she realised that someone was kneeling over her.

She looked up to see one of Caratus' slaves above her, looking over her with a rather stoic figure.

"My orders for this journey are to make sure your well tended to, Ms. Ozoza" He said in a soothing voice.

"Go away," She hissed, "I don't need you!"

"It doesn't matter what you think you need, Ozoza, I've been instructed to see that you're taken care of."

"I don't need the help of a slave." She muttered, before picking herself up and dressing herself down. She couldn't allow herself to seem so incapable that a slave has pity on her.

"My name is Ahti, my lady." The slave bowed in subservience, "forgive me for my insolence, but I can't allow you to remain alone in this state."

Pripp was close to letting off another chiding remark, but felt as if her feelings were conveyed well enough. She sat herself down gruffly in a deckchair, before motioning that Ahti's permission to be pardoned was granted.

"I know how it feels to be seen as unworthy of their position, my lady, I had a very good life going before a colleague of mine grew jealous of my work." Ahti explained.

"I worked hard for my lot in life," Pripp stated haughtily, "No-one saw me as anything more than another female in the sciences looking to benefit off the Movement for Equality. There have been many people in my life far worse than Caratus!"

"With all due respect, my lady, I do doubt that." Ahti softly spoke, hoping that his words would not come across as insolent.

"Caratus is nothing more than an aristocrat living off his families wealth." She retorted bitterly.

"If that were the case, why do you not stand up to him?" Ahti responded.

Pripp gasped. "How dare you speak in such a manner!" She cried, "Why do you believe that a common slave such as yourself has any right to give me advice?"

Ahti backed off, clearly hurt, "Forgive me for my insolence, Ms Ozoza…", but the damage had been down. In a silent motion Pripp ordered the slave away, who retreated back to his quarters in dejected shame.

    ---

"Ms Ozoza, I believe we've arrived at your destination." A younger slave pipped up, at who's announcement Pripp left the confines of her room and stared our at the majesty before her.

As far as the eye could see a sprawling, swaying forest wrapped the land in it's brilliance. From the mountaintops to the hillside a multitude of birds flittered through the sky, their melodious chime hanging beautifully in the breeze. Every so often various flocks would swoop down into the trees, flushing out various smaller birds from their hiding spots before others swung down and plucked them from the sky. Pripp could only hold her breath in wonder.

The forest was so dense and swayed with the wind in such a fashion that it appeared to be alive itself - something that Pripp couldn't yet entirely rule out. But above all else the trees shone a spectacular white, which combined with the density of the trees seemed as if the hills themselves were tucking themselves in to sleep. The white leaves also seemed able to reflect light, resulting in an arrayed of sparkling light speckled throughout the forest.

    E688A204436DDB111F2DDB9886D0212171305F8E

"This is incredible..." She whispered as the whirring of the ship formed a harmony with the flocks of birds.

"Those trees must cost a fortune!" Caratus exclaimed in glee, "I may have been wrong about you, Pripp, this is going to make me rich!"

In terse commands Caratus ordered the slaves to land the craft on the edge of the forest. The hovercraft lowered onto a clearing by the outskirts of the white trees, before touching down rather clunkily into the tall gras. As the engine died down the chirping of the creatures became almost overpowering.

"Ahti, cut down a path for us to the forest!" Caratus snapped. Ahti nodded in silent obedience, before picking up a curved blade, normally used for public executions, and used it to hack through the vegetation. It wasn't long until they arrived at the foot of one of the spectacular trees.

"They're even more impressive up close!" Caratus wheeled in jubilation.

Pripp bearly heard him as she drew up close to the tree. Her head pounded as she saw the leaves shining now, more and more powerfully, as animals skittered away from her. She felt the pounding grow as the leaves shined, as if...as if...

Pripp lost her train of thought. The tree was so beautiful. She couldn't dare dream of anything happening to it.

"Did you not hear me Pripp?!" She felt her body get heaved back, as her head snapped to see Caratus towering over her, wild-eyed and furious. "I'm ordering you to cut it down!"

Terror and delirium washed over Pripp. She tried to murmur a response to her patron, but felt that the words that came out of her mouth weren't her own.

"Don't hurt the tree… don't do..." Pripp blubbered.

She felt her brain bang against her skull as she felt the shining rays of the trees beat down on her. Suddenly a sense of danger overtook her; suddenly the dull banging in her head become exponentially more excrutiating. She wasn't sure, but she felt as if someone had struck her on the side of her head and that she was now lying on the floor. She looked up, and through wavering sight noted a crazed Caratus brandishing some sort of cane above her, yelling incomprehensibly. Pripp realised that Caratus had now raised his cane, then he went into a blur as the words DANGER and THREAT rang in her head. Something came down on her. She closed her eyes in terror.

The strike never came. Instead a dull thud landed next to her on the ground. She opened her eyes and, with recovering vision, saw Caratus quivering on the ground, blood spluttering out of the back of his head.

"Are you alright, Ozoza?" Ahti exclaimed, wide-eyed in shock, the curved blade gripped in his hands.

Pripp muttered something unintelligible before she passed out. The last thing she saw were the sparkling leaves, noticeably far less radiant than before.

    ---

Not too much happened in the years between 2245-50. The Tuxkan Divine Foundation, whom today's instalment focussed on, have blown up in power, colonising two other planets aside from their homeworld, Blorp, along with large authority over their part of space. They have a slight issue with slaves in their nation becoming more and more libertarian (which is at odds with their fanatic authoritarianism) but they appear by and large the strongest force in the galaxy (aside from FEs).

The Hahn-Mur state have called off their various enlightenment projects for the time being, returning to their passive observation. The mission was largely regarded as a failure, and Huuregdhe's position as Chief Precentor seems rather shaky, considering that this project was almost entirely his idea.

    D4ADF0B0C0A8B71D58A17BFC6DB6285C288BF852

Aside from that no other empires have embarked on expanding their influence over the galaxy, and no other empires of note have gained enlightenment (aside from the two empires to the east of the Hahn-Mur State in the picture above, the United Jas'Gavas Commonwealth and the Pobelin Democratic Council). It seems as if the various space-faring governments would prefer to play it safe rather than brave the unknown of space.

On such an exciting cliffhanger (/s) I would like to bring this episode to an end, but before I do I'd like to bring up a suggestion for the series. I'm considering to post a sort of "status update" every 50 years or so, and I'd like to cover things such as the top 5ish most powerful empires in the galaxy at that date, as well as go into a little more detail into each nation. I will do the first of these next time, at the year 2255, since this series hasn't been running too long thus far, but after that I will post one every year that is a multiple of 50 (eg. 2300, 2350 etc.). If there's anything specifically you want to see, such as species or planets, just ask!

With that said, I hope you enjoyed today's episode, and I'll see you next time in 2255!

    2255: First Status Update
  • YEAR 2255

Hey everyone, this instalment I'll be doing something different. As you may be aware from the last episode I'm going to give you a quick status update on the entire galaxy, as well as going over the current top five nations too. I'll be deciding the top five by sorting them all out by relative power in the contacts menu, something which takes into account:

    1) A nation's fleet power

    2) A nation's naval capacity

    3) A nation's technology level

Although, in my opinion, these aren't perfect measures to determine whose the most powerful, I prefer to do this rather than guessing who it is based on my own judgement. Afterwards I'll be going over each individual part of the galaxy and go over each star empire there. So without further ado, let the show begin!

    5 - Hythean Alliance

    upload_2018-10-25_18-42-56.png

Ethics: Egalitarian, Fanatic Militarist, Fanatic Spiritualist.

    Civics:
    • Elite Militaries - This society has a long and extensive martial history. Soldiers, pilots, naval and repair crews are looked upon highly by society and are exceptionally well-trained and funded. Years of rigorous combat training build upon centuries of strategic development make this society's military personnel a cut above the rest.
    • Mass Media - A conglomerate of either privately or state owned media companies have reached a position of dominance in this society. They work with the government to always present the government and it's actions in a good light. They are masters at influencing public opinion, marketing the latest consumer products, and shaping the minds of those who watch their intergalactic news and entertainment programs.
    • Adventurous Pioneers - This society have long-established nomadic traditions and strong adventurous spirit. People tend to vastly expand their territories, resettling as wide as it's possible.
Strengths: The Hythean have one of the largest militaries in the galaxy, which is why I assume they are so high up on the great powers list. Whereas most empires don't have a single military ship, the Hythean have 12 corvettes already with a combined fleet power of 723. The fact that only a handful of empires have navies will skewer the great powers list, at least early on in this story. The Hytheans likely have built this navy because of their martial traditions as well as to protect them from the massive prism swarm in their only neighbouring system.

Weaknesses: The Hythean Alliance are currently facing two crises which will almost certainly result in them falling out of 5th place next time I do a status update. Firstly, as you may be aware, there is only one way out of their home system, which is through the Sehuetem system. Unfortunately, this system is filled to the brim with crystalline entities, far too powerful for the Hytheans to ever defeat, meaning that they will be cut off from the rest of the galaxy likely the entire game. Secondly, their focus on their navy has resulted in mass starvation on their homeworld of Naff'Bhor, a situation which, if left unchecked, could result in a large-scale revolution the likes of which they've yet to see. So yeah, I don't rate their chances.

    4 - Evandari Alliance

    upload_2018-10-25_18-43-34.png

Ethics: Fanatic Libertarianism, Xenophobe, Fanatic Collectivist.

    Civics:
    • Power - Energy generators have reached a dominant position in this society due to the realities of the galactic energy market. The government relies heavily on their support.
    • Imperialist - This society deals with it's subjects from a position of domination and strength, obligating them with significant contributions to the Empire.
    • Nationalistic Zeal - A strong sense of nationalistic pride permeates all layers of this society.
Strengths: The Evandari Alliance has an incredibly strong production of both minerals and energy, and are generally not lacking in anything resource-wise. They also have a headstart on their neighbours in terms of expansion, as they have already sent science ships to scout much of their surrounding space and are sue to expand in the very near future.

Weaknesses: The Evandari are no longer alone in their corner of the galaxy. Since last time a new society has arisen, the Makaru Autocracy, a nation that is unlikely going to take kindly to the anarcho-communists of the Evandari Alliance. In fact, the mix between the Evandari's communism, xenophobia and imperialism is unlikely going to get them many friends in the galaxy, if any at all. If they don't manage to assert themselves soon they could find themselves very isolated and vulnerable.

    3 - Alliance of Poqats

    upload_2018-10-25_18-44-10.png

Ethics: Libertarianism, Militarist, Spiritualist, Fanatic Collectivist.

    Civics:
    • Mining - Several large mining guilds have reached a dominant position in this society. The government relies heavily on their support.
    • Defenders of Faith - This society's army maintains strong traditions of intense martial training, both physical and spiritual, conducted in order to be always ready to protect their religious beliefs from infidels.
    • Political Pluralism - In this society a constant public discussion between various social groups is encouraged, providing more coherent and efficient social and state development.
Strengths: The Alliance of Poqats, much like the Hythean Alliance, is on this list largely because of the navy they've managed to build, one consisting of 8 corvettes with a combined military power of 411. Another major advantage they have is that they directly neighbour the Frubalav Ancients (the Xenophilic FE). This means that they're borders are basically protected from both the east and the north, allowing them to direct any defensive efforts they have to the south whilst avoiding any sort of two-front war.

Weaknesses: Poqats has yet to expand out of their home system, and have so far shown no signs of doing so. They have not assigned a scientist to any of their science ships, meaning that if they don't hurry they'll find themselves dropping out of this list pretty quickly. The only reason they got to this position was because of their powerful navy, something that won't do them any good at this point in time, so right now it's either expand or succumb to irrelevance.

    2 - Hahn-Mur State

    upload_2018-10-25_18-44-34.png

Ethics: Authoritarian, Fanatic Spiritualist, Collectivist, Ecologist

    Civics:
    • Mass Media - A conglomerate of either privately or state owned media companies have reached a position of dominance in this society. They work with the government to always present the government and it's actions in a good light. They are masters at influencing public opinion, marketing the latest consumer products, and shaping the minds of those who watch their intergalactic news and entertainment programs.
    • Power - Energy generators have reached a dominant position in this society due to the realities of the galactic energy market. The government relies heavily on their support.
    • Harmonious Collective - This is a society characterised by a strong sense of spiritual unity and development of common good.
Strengths: The Hahn-Mur State is the first one to make this list to be undeniably one of the strongest powers in the galaxy thus far. They've spread their borders far beyond their origins in Dalphene, so much so that they're the largest empire in the galaxy (aside from FEs). Another massive boost is that they have barely any neighbours, and those they do have are far inferior to them, so the Hahn-Mur State is likely to dominate at least their portion of the galaxy for a long time.

Weaknesses: The Hahn-Mur State has no inherent weakness, but one thing that has caused them to suffer are their failed attempts to enlighten several primitives within their borders. This has resulted in them falling slightly behind in society research to their contemporaries, but since they have no neighbours anywhere close to their level this is only a mild downside, and will likely not hinder them at all.

    1 - Tuxkan Divine Foundation

    upload_2018-10-25_18-45-3.png

Ethics: Fanatic Authoritarian, Militarist, Fanatic Spiritualist

    Civics:
    • Ascetic - This society keep strong tradition of abstinence from worldly pleasures, which brings peace to the mind and health to the body.
    • Efficient Bureaucracy - This society is renowned for its efficiency. Not only do the mag-trains run on time, but the colossal bureaucratic apparatus required to run an interstellar nation has been greatly streamlined.
    • Power - Energy generators have reached a dominant position in this society due to the realities of the galactic energy market. The government relies heavily on their support.
Strengths: The Tuxkans have truly become a behemoth in these early stages of the galaxy - they have already colonised 3 other planets aside from Blorp, their homeworld, and own a portion of space spanning 10 solar systems. They produce massive amounts of resources and their society research is through the roof. It's likely that they'll be a power for the entirety of the game, unless something unfortunate happened to them.

Weaknesses: Despite their strength, their weaknesses are a lot more obvious than, say, the Hahn-Mur State. Unlike their galactic Number 2, The TDF are surrounding by powerful-ish neighbours who could all pose a significant threat if they banded together. Also, over half of their population are slaves, a situation made all the more unstable by the fact that they are adopting libertarianism at a rapid rate. The Tuxkans are an obvious power in the galaxy, but with so many threats both internally and externally it's possible they may succumb to a rather unfortunate demise.

    ---

With the great powers addressed, it's about time we take a closer look at the rest of the galaxy. In truth, their are only two actual behemoths - the Hahn-Mur State and the Tuxkan Divine Foundation - but since last time so many new empires have begun expanding that they could very easily be caught up by any number of societies.

    96689932493F4D927272560F482F149EFB8F1258

One of those unfortunate not to be in the top 5 is the Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul, the very first empire to enter the space age back in 2226. They've colonised a second planet that was in their home-system, but have only now just begun expanding. If they didn't have so few direct neighbours they might have found themselves trapped pretty quickly.

The only other empire shown not in the top 5 is the Sacrosanct Vhemm Confederacy. They were one of the first to rise up but have yet to even explore out of their borders, but they still find themselves in a decent position to carve out some sort of empire for themselves

    DBF989DDDCF42E027A1FA1737725F6FBE9769173

Here we have a bundle of empires of similar sizes bunched right up together. Despite being the first to rise up, the Jaazijans have had the awful luck of existing right next to the Orassian Shard. Every time the truce runs out between them the Orassians routinely send ships to their homeworld and utterly bombard them, stunting their growth completely. They have, however, managed to send science and construction ships out, as evidenced by the fact that they control a second system, and seeing as how they aren't in too terrible a position each time they end their wars they could still potentially have some sort of future.

The interesting thing here though is that the Vool Authority, despite only achieving FTL travel less than a decade ago, have already begun to expand and as of writing this they look set to claim even more systems. It may be early days, but with the Jaazijans hanging on by a thread and the Ekwynians and Multyx slow off the mark, the Vool find themselves with a strong chance to assert themselves as the dominating force in this part of the galaxy.

    F1FCA50CC45E33BE62E12CB62A0058B5E5F2BD55

Obviously the Hahn-Mur State is the strongest force here by a country mile, but with numerous smaller states sprouting up and only one of them needing to succeed to threaten the Hahn-Mur, their strength in this part of the galaxy isn't utterly secure yet. Perhaps their biggest threat comes from the Endurga Civilisation, who have just begun to expand out of their borders and has been around the same amount of time as the Hahn-Mur State has.

However, for the Endurga Civilisation, there's a relatively large threat that they need to deal with as well - the two nations just to their south-east, the Obbha Imperial Domains and the Vat'Na-Ka Civilisation. Both of them have strong communist governments, whereas the Endurga Civilisation are headed by an entrenched aristocratic elite. With such an ideological divide, plus the fact that the Vat'Na-Ka have already built themselves a sizeable navy and the Obbha seem set to expand in the near future, The Endurga Civilisation must act swiftly to crush this threat if they wish to have any hope of posing a threat to the Hahn-Mur State.

    A69CB6B06EA0EBD0F91CAF839D5C37DB65DDD7A6

Of course the Tuxkan Divine Foundation is the powerhouse here, but as you can see they have some far more powerful neighbours than the Hahn-Mur do. The Menjeti Theocracy to their south pose the most obvious threat, but with no hyperlanes directly connecting them yet it's unlikely that these two empires will hold any sort of hostility in the foreseeable future. What poses a much larger threat is the jingoistic government of the Commonwealth of Patraggor. All Patraggor may need to do to even the odds between them and the Tuxkan is to build some sort of fleet, as the Tuxkan have shown no intention of doing such a thing.

Another potential power could rise up from the north. Already the Thek'Qlek Autocracy are in a decent position to assert themselves as a contender, but what could be truly terrifying would be if the Gulk-Furki Empire chose to expand south, an area that seems temptingly empty for them. They have already colonised a planet and are now expanding at a rapid rate, so if they chose to reign over the empty space above the Tuxkan, the Divine Foundation could find themselves surrounded on all fronts by powerful empires waiting for the chance to overthrow them.

    E51E6A7F8645350CEABD27D40896AAD0F70E1B83

Our tour of the galaxy ends in the far north, an area that is yet to produce one dominating force. I would assume that the naton most likely to control this region could be the Evandari, as they have been around the longest and seem set to expand any day now, but their stalling has allowed other nations to make up for lost time in dramatic fashion; the newly arisen Makaru Autocracy provides the biggest short-term obstacle to the Evandari's chances, but nations such as the Ganlarev Oreder and the Gulk-Furki Empire - both of which have exploded in strength rather rapidly, have placed themselves in a position as strong as the Evandari's to cement themselves as this region's contender. With more empires potentially rising up here soon, it's a complete toss up as to who will take the cake in the galaxy's most hotly contested region.

That will bring a close to today's instalment, and the first status update of the series! The point of these is to hopefully convey the power dynamics of the galaxy and give you a better feeling for the story so far. If there's anything you feel like I've missed or something you want to know about feel free to let me know and I'll give you the details you seek. But apart from that, I'll see you next time in 2260!

    2260: Mandate of Riddigus
  • YEAR 2260

    2255, Riddigus System

In the control room of the Bos'Pachtux Mandated Station, Guferal stood, staring, out of the room-wide window into the abyss of space. Although he couldn't see it from here, he knew that millions of kilometres away, on the outskirts of the solar system, lay the aliens. And today would be the day they were exterminated for good.

The Bos'Pactux had lived in their isolated existence for millenia, uninterrupted and uncontacted. Their species had sent ships throughout the Riddigus System and their probes had voyaged far beyond the outskirts of their quiet haven. The water of space seemed so smooth to them that it appeared that only they lived within it. Such a notion seems foolish nowadays, but it was unanimously decided that days were better back then.

    Back before the aliens arrived.

News of their intrusion within their solar system spread almost as soon as they arrived, for their probes and sensors had eyes on almost all corners of known space, but it wasn't until a few months later that they realised just how bad the situation was. These aliens ere pirates, the dregs of some society either far stronger than their own or long forgotten in the passage of time. They possessed weapons and technologies far beyond what the Bos'Pachtux could even fathom, and they had their own military ships, something none of the governments on Vagec had the economy to maintain.

They spent the best part of 50 years tormenting the poor and downtrodden on Vagec, pummelling the surface from space before descending to take their reward. The manner with which they attacked was obviously carefree, almost complacent, for they knew that the scuttling reptiles on the surface below had no hope to stop their unchecked greed. Sometimes they came down without firing at all, knowing that the governments would gladly give in to their demands to stop them from bombarding their homes. Sometimes they fired upon them just for the fun of it.

However, there was a small ray of hope for the Bos'Pachtux. Once the pirates had built up their forces substantially, instead of attacking Vagec and decimating them, they would fly off to a foreign system and remain absent for many years. Whether they're are redirecting their efforts onto another civilisation or embarking on some unknown adventure, the Bos'Pachtux governments knew that these were their times to act. Slowly but surely they built up their defences, bit by bit, year by year. It took almost 15 cycles to achieve, but finally their space station was complete. They would at last receive their retribution.

The control room on the station was in a quiet sense of urgency, as the beeps of machinery were the only sounds heard over the concerted and quiet efforts of all the tacticians on board to pull off their mission. Guferal turned to face them, hiding the joy behind a mask of authority, as he barked orders towards them.

"Sir, the missiles in Silo One are prepared and ready to fire on command!" Reported a man manically tapping away at his desk.

"Excellent, Kulegaf, We'll wait on 2 and 3 to be ready before we start firing. Dorbax!" He snapped to a female assistant waiting by his side. "Have we got any news regarding the whereabouts of the alien fleets?"

"Scanners on Vagec have picked up movements in the Balawar System." She said, with a hint of nervousness, "It appears as though they're returning from whatever expedition they were on to prevent us from firing."

"Will they return in time?" Replied Guferal grimly.

"I...I don't know," Dorbax admitted, "It appears as though they've been in an engagement with a third-party, so they may not be in a position to take us on yet."

"A third party?" Inquire Guferal quizzically, "When was this discovered?"

"There appears to be an empire-"

"Silo 2 is ready to go, Sir!" Interjected another commander, who was quickly given a wave of acknowledgement by Guferal before returning to the hushed hysteria. The admiral turned to his assistant and motioned for her to continue.

"Well, it appears as if the aliens were involved in an altercation with a third-party empire." She said, her words spoken with a hint of excitement, "It appears as if we aren't alone in the galaxy any more!"

"Is this the empire where these aliens came from?" Asked Guferal in anticipation.

"Almost certainly," Dorbax confirmed, "the aliens are likely pirates and outcasts of their mother country. And if their pirates are anything to go by, this alien empire is likely far stronger than we are."

"Well, if they're incapable of defeating these pirates and preventing them from invading their lands for almost 50 years, they can't be massively stronger than us?" Guferal stated, attempting to silence Dorbax's worry.

"That's the thing," Dorbax struggled to hold back her excitement, "the same readings that we picked up in Balawar to locate the pirates are being found in several other solar systems. These pirates seem to have hijacked civilian ships and repurposed them, which emit different ion trails. Which means..."

"-The pirate problems of this empire must be far more rampant than we at first believed." Guferal whistled in wonder at the new revelations he's learned in the last few minutes. "I wonder what this empire is like?

"Sir!" Cried out a Bos'Pachtux scientist manning the relay to the Vagec control. "We've, uh, just found out something pretty huge!"

"What is it, recruit?" Guferal almost span around in excitement.

"Our radiologists on Vagec have just made a breakthrough. Apparently there's this alien empire in the Balawar System-"

"I've been informed of that, thank you." Guferal stated, trying to get the man to get to the point.

"Well, they've apparently decoded our language. They've hailed our radio channels and announced themselves as 'The Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul'."

If it was possible for the room to get even more silent than it was already, that possibility had just been achieved. Every man in the room sat stunned at the news that the waters of space had just received it's first ripple.

"Um...Kulegaf, how's Silo 3 coming along?" Guferal almost whispered.

"Silo 3 is fully prepared and ready to go. All three silos are ready to launch they payloads."

"Inform the crew to fire at will." Guferal responded, before turning to look back out of the room-wide window. As the nuclear warheads embarked on their long journey to rid them of their parasite-like aliens once and for all, it became clear to Guferal just how much had changed in the last hour.

The Bos'Pachtux were no longer alone in the galaxy.

    ---

2260 marked the first time that civilisations began to establish communications with each other. There's a lot to go through in this instalment as a lot of the relations and diplomacy that will likely be a feature of this entire AAR is beginning to be developed. Today's focus was on the Mandate of Riddigus, who have recently risen up right on the border of the Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul, who were the very first civilisation to enter the space age. Despite having the advantage of being the first out of the gate, the Kingdom is having issues with multiple pirate factions invading their territory, so their may be time yet for Riddigus to catch up with their neighbour.

    40F5CF132AA74F1D1048834B88C8DFEAF45939E9

Currently, one of the hotbeds of diplomacy lies in the south-east, with nations such as the Endurga Civilisation, the Obbha Imperial Domains and the Vat'na-Ka Civilisation currently vying amongst each other for supremacy. The Endurga and the Vat'na-Ka have signed a non-aggression pact and a research agreement with each other, pacing the way for a future alliance between the two. Considering how the Obbha Imperial Domains are now trapped due to the layout of the hyperlanes and that the Vat'na-Ka Civilisation has already built up a fleet and closed their borders to the Obbha, it appears as if the passage of time will not fall kindly on the OID, and they stand in serious peril of being invaded from their fellow communists.

Also, the Endurga Civilisation are the first to uplift another primitive species, who have stylised their new space age government as the Pious Ytrellan Conclave. They have one of my favourite civics from my mod, called 'Industrial Cult', meaning that their civilisation has taken such a liking to their toil-relieving factories that they regard them as a divine gift, and have reformed their religion around a cult to worship their industries. Whether or not the street urchins of the Ytrellan Conclave gain independence only time can tell.

    085FA20AA11EE3AD5B84BDA6BA2D805AC4D86628

Finally, we have one of the biggest developments of today's instalment, which regards the Menjeti Theocracy and the Tuxkan Divine Foundation. Thw two strongest nations in the galaxy, if you disregard the Hahn-Mur State, have closed their borders to each other and have taken steps to fortify their borders. If the current level of hostility is maintained we may eventually see a war between these two titanic entities, a war that would shift the balance of power in the whole galaxy towards the victor.

A note to take is the rapid expansion of the Gulk-Furki Empire. Considering how ten years ago they occupied just their home system, I've watched them quickly spread their borders further and further afield. If they keep this up they may be able to profit from any squabbling between the current largest empire in the galaxy, the Tuxkans, and their strongest rivals, the Menjeti, for their own benefit.

    4A045D39188468E1CE94EA3738A9728599605200

Throughout the galaxy civilisations have made the step to introduce themselves to their neighbours and rivals, and it seems as if, for the first time in this AAR, alliances and warfare may not be far off in the future. We're definitely right in the thick of the action now and I'd like to predict that by next time these foundations of diplomacy may develop into something more meaningful. Who knows how long it will be before our first federation is formed, or when our first galaxy-spanning war is declared.

Okay, probably not for a long while, but still, food for thought ;P

That wraps things up for today, thanks for reading and I'll see you again in 2265!

    2265: Pious Ytrellan Conclave
  • YEAR 2265

    2265, Seradon System

A wave of nervousness surged through Lop as the announcer's booming voice erupted from every speaker in the room. In a few moments the fight Lop's entire life had been building up to would commence.

"...I hope you're all ready, friends, because this matchup is shaping up to be one incredible fight!..."

Lop was letting a few practice swings fly, going over the routines that had been drilled into him for weeks now, when the door to his preparation room creaked open. He coolly turned round to see his master, Earl of Salkon, march into the room, a grin of excitement plastered on his face.

Lop bowed his head low to acknowledge his presence. "Good evening, master." He said, checking himself so that he did not speak out of turn. However, his humility was quickly waved away by Salkon.

"Lop, I just came by quickly to see how you're doing." His grin did not waver as he spoke to his champion, "I don't want my fighter to go into the Circle not up for the fight."

"I'm up for it." Lop asserted, "I've been training for this moment for ages, I'm not going to fail now."

"Good lad!" Salkon beamed. "I must admit, your career in the Circle has gotten both of us quite a lot of infamy. I've never had a combatant that I've been so fond of. And I promise you, If you were to win this match-"

"...Lop comes into this final in great form, winning 9 of the 10 matches in the preliminary rounds to the finals..."

The door burst open as one of the younger staff interrupted Salkon's speech, "Lop... Earl Salkon!" He stammered in surprise, not realising that the aristocrat was present, "I apologise for my conduct, sir."

"As you should be!" The Earl snapped. "There better be a damn good reason for your entrance!"

"There is, my lord, there is!" The boy insisted, "Lop has a visitor"

With those words a man entered the room, and Lop gasped in shock by their appearance. He was one of the aliens - the Endurga - that had landed on Kolkex Zajkax almost 10 years ago. He walked with an air of eminence, with blue mulloscoid tendrils weaving around on his head, which Lop had learned served as their source for sensing their surroundings. Intuitively he bowed low.

"What are you doing?" Salkon hissed, "You're Lop, you don't need to bow for them!". Begrudgingly Lop brought himself up, and looked at the strange 'Endurga' more closely. It was the first time he had seen them so close up, and he found the way their tentacles twirl and loop around almost hypnotic.

The Endurga turned and spoke a strange clicking language to an assistant next to him, who was straining to piece together what the alien was saying. After what appeared to be an age the assistant finally felt capable of relaying the message.

"The great industrialist Danto, a leading figure of the Endurga people of the planet Shlargh, wishes to converse with you prior to you fight, and secondly wishes you luck; he's watched your prowess televised and has been impressed by your abilities."

Lop turned to his master, who nodded his permission for him to reply, "I am honoured that you think so highly of me, great Danto." Lop began, looking at the strange Endurga while the assistant listened to his message, "To think that I'm the first of my species to have fans out of this world!" He spoke in jest, which prompted a short snort from Salkon.

The assistant quickly clicked a translation, with the Endurga letting out a short wheeze to signal that the message was successfully received. Danto was quick to reply, "Trust me, great Ytrellan, I am not your only alien supporter. This match is being televised all the way back to Shlargh. You've become quite a celebrity among us. It was nice to meet you, Lop, I'll see you after the fight." Danto marched out of the room, leaving a stunned Lop open-mouthed.

"I'm a celebrity amongst the aliens?" He gasped in shock.

"Indeed," Salkon responded, "I've received quite a few offers from them for your ownership, your friend Danto amongst them. He was probably here to check you out before the match." The Earl tutted in disdain, "He's not much of a talker, is he? Do all aliens have as brief conversations as him?"

"I'm going to Shlargh?" He whispered in surprise.

"If you win the fight today, maybe." Salkon replied, with a noticeable pang of disappointment gripping him by the concept that his favoured slave could leave him. He was cut short yet again by another member of staff barging into the room.

"Lop, you're on." The member of staff quipped, urging Lop to make for the stage. Lop turned one last time to his master, who gave him a determined nod before he was swept away onto the foot of the infamous Circle.

He took a deep breath. His entire future hung in the balance.

    ---

The galaxy is really beginning to feel a little bit claustrophobic in the year 2265, and in no place is this more true than in the clump of Empires in the east. The Vool Authority have really stamped their mark here now, rapidly asserting control over multiple systems to satisfy their growing industry and desire for imperialism. Although there have been no changes in the game of diplomacy, they find themselves in a good position to become the dominant force here, if the xenophobic Ekwynians are subjugated and the troubled Jaazijans are taken care of.

Also in this shot is the long, phallic borders of the Hahn-Mur State, who have decided to extend their power far out into the galaxy - from what I've seen this is because their science ships have predominantly been exploring the outer core of the galaxy, but this strategy could proved useful as this territory could become highly contested in the future.

    CA01A62AEA263B344C08023CC11D971064ADBE0C

Elsewhere, in the north, it seems as if three major powers are looking to assert themselves in the most contested part of the galaxy. The Evandari Alliance, despite being the oldest of all the states here (proven by the fact that they aren't just black and white), found themselves playing catch up due to their unwillingness to expand to other systems, but have since done so explosively. The Ganlarev Order also find themselves in a strong position, with their enlightened subject - the Aramathi Allied Nations - providing an ally against the potentially hostile, yet weaker, Interstellar Eruxo Confederation. And finally, one of the dark horses of the galaxy, the Gulk-Furki Empire continue their horde-like exapanse over their part of the galaxy, their rapid growth so far uncontested by anyone.

There's little to separate these three in terms of power, and the future of the north remains as unsure as always. Will one of these three come on top? Will they manage to settle their (many) differences in order to secure peace? Or will another power use any future infighting amongst them to stake their own claim here? Until they commence diplomacy between them, it's incredibly hard to predict the power dynamic that will emerge here in the imminent future.

That'll be it for today's instalment. I'm sorry that it's taken two weeks to post this, but last weekend was a little hectic for me. The galaxy mapmode below shows many more little details that aren't big enough to devote a whole paragraph too. For instance:
    • The Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul (Purple nation, top-left) have yet another alien empire to contest with alongside the Mandate of Riddigus, who were the focus of last episode.
    • The Sacrosanct Vhemm Confederacy (Orange, top-leftish) have finally begun to expand.
    • The Empires in the south, west to the Hahn-Mur State, are beginning to stake their claim on the galaxy, and could prove somewhat of a thorn in the side of the Hahn-Mur should they be left unchecked.
    • The powerhouses in the east - the Tuxkan, the Menjeti and the Patraggor (nation far-right) - are all getting stronger and stronger, potentially setting the stage for a titanic conflict.
With diplomacy well underway amongst our empires jostling for power, it remains ever more intriguing to see who will come out on top. I've only run this sort of experiment once before, so I'm not fully sure what to expect. We could see a singular empire or confederation dominate the entire galaxy, or we could see it remain divided amongst regional powers like it is now. Will the Tuxkan be caught up in terms of strength? Will we see a relative outsider come to the forefront? Will the Hahn-Mur State ever stop resembling a penis? Truly these are the questions of gods (and immature teenagers such as myself :p)

Thank you all for reading, and I hope to see you next time in 2270!

    2270: Commonwealth of Patraggor
  • YEAR 2270

    2267, Trimus System

    III of Jakli, 4690
    Kul-Lern
Governor and Representative of the Vul-Takren System and all worlds within
    Thrus-Sanguur
    Commonwealth of Patroggar

To: Our Leader Igvi-Leinad's Esteemed Council

Ref: Culturing the aliens on Thrus-Sanguur

Imprinting our culture onto the fungoids termed 'Qasvalyvians' is progressing at an acceptable rate. It is proving difficult to maintain a suitable garrison to keep them in line as the planet has proven near-inhospitable. Further funding to accelerate the rate at which necessary infrastructure is built has been calculated at around 55,000,000 Fls, and must be transferred within 5 days. Infrastructure includes 57 forts, all of which with central-heating, hydroponic and mining facilities to replace the obsolete technology of the subjugated primitives. 97% of troops are stationed on the nearby Vul-Takren colony - if a permanent police force is not established on the conquered planet the process of 'culturisation' will slow down by roughly 37.8%.

The casualties of the invasion have been recovered, and we can confirm that the number of dead remains at an acceptably low level. All missing personnel have been accounted for, and the families of the deceased have been informed. Morale amongst the troops have been reported to be at optimal levels; further troops are currently irrelevant to our plans.

The nearby colony of Vul-Takren is not sufficiently populated in order to run the sector at maximum efficiency. Requesting 4 colony ships of 500,000 able-bodied workers each to supply the colony with the workforce needed to run the sector semi-autonomously. The primitives on Cixiv Haxizabb are already showing Stage-2 signs of resentment, therefore the optimally calculated route is to thoroughly subjugate those on Thrus-Sanguur before engaging more of our focus on the Cixiv Haxizabb primitives.

    That is all.

    ---

    Dearest Thi,

Not a night goes by without the thought of returning to you captivating my mind. I'm eternally sorry that I failed to come back from Thrus-Sanguur on the promised date, but the depraved aliens are proving far harder to civilise than initially planned. No matter, they will be squashed, just like the countless species our people have dominated so far.

I know you miss me, o powerful Thi, but you know how important this new post of sector-governor is to me. I cannot relax, for our 'great' leader is old and my newfound influence will prove invaluable when I attempt to oust his 'Rump' Council - it would be a long time coming, wouldn't it! It pains me to think how they take all the credit from our current golden age, when it is the work of us administrators, generals and admirals that has marked the galaxy with the ink of our borders. Do not worry, Thi, for when I take power I will right the wrongs this villainous government has imposed upon us.

Although I miss you, I try to find solace in the fact that our ever-expanding dominion has yet to find an nation - or threat - anywhere close to matching our present firepower. Every space-rat we find - Rethellian, Ymacera, the Themlar in the Iolam system and the Qasvalyvians I now lord over - have been suppressed and subjugated. I have no doubt that our chosen course of extragalactic policy is right and just, for if we do not move against them then it is certain they would've taken up arms against us; the only question is whether they would've done so in a thousand years or ten. But you're safe now, Thi. We are. We're going to live far grander than we ever have before.

Think of it, Thi. Our children will see a galaxy governed under Xanyri rule. My rule. Our legacy shall be imprinted upon the culture of every alien we so meet. The Commonwealth shall spread across the stars, and the very stars shall burn at my command.

I will make them burn for you, Thi.

The year is 2270, and the galactic scene continues to develop at breakneck pace. The grand nations of the east, the Tuxkan Divine Foundation and the Commonwealth of Patraggor (today's focus) have invaded a vast multitude of primitive planets and enslaved the populaces. I should warn you that I'm not the most observant person, because I'm pretty sure they've been doing this for decades. Still, this development is a first in galactic history - no other nation has subjugated primitives to such a degree as these two nations have, and since these nations in question are almost direct neighbours it'll be interesting to see how this similarity plays into future diplomacy.

One important point in all of this is that these subjugated populaces will cause both great unrest and a wider range of ideologies, meaning that these new citizens of the Tuxkan and Patraggor may come back to haunt them.

One section of the galaxy that has been seriously underappreciated is the south-east, which had been pretty irrelevant before but has developed several mini-contests for itself. Nearest to the Hahn-Mur State are the two sizeable nations of the United Jas'Gavas Commonwealth and the Pobelin Democratic Council that are beginning to tangle over the surrounding space, but despite the border friction these two civilisations are both individualists and industrials and so far seem to be somewhat amicable. An alliance between them might be the best course of action for both, at least for now.

The centre of this cluster is controlled by the Allied Sojagg States, a fanatically friendly and peaceful empire that could be the democratic adhesive that holds these civilisations together. Their attempts at federation-building may be checked by the Zum Star Union to their south, a civilisation that is somehow both fanatically libertarian and elitist - don't ask mem how that works. Their confusing government may be just enough to remain relevant in this increasingly competitive quadrant.

Slightly removed further to the east lie the last four civilisations of this area; the large, spiritual and liberal Mith-Fell Pious Commonwealth, the militaristic xenophobes of the Hazar Star Commonality, the under-stratified nations of the Warrior Clans of Eugizim, and the decadent hierarchy of the Ozkox Hegemony, which, unlike the name suggests, is incredibly zenophilic.

Oh, and the Royal Tiyal Suns exists as well.

The first civilisation that had graced the galactic scene with their presence, the Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul, are beginning to become overwhelmed by growing threats on their borders. Their new rival of the Mandate of Riddigus have begun to expand to expand out of their home-system, and might even be close to asserting themselves as equals to the nation that's been around since 2226. Although the Kingdom have created their own protectorate, another new civilisation in the Galactic Sakyt Hegemony have sprung up to put pressure on the Kingdom's eastern flank.

And to the south, the Sacrosanct Vhemm Confederacy are beginning to cast their beady eyes to the outer rim...

That'll wrap things up for today's instalment. Not too many major developments have occurred, but as borders begin to close our civilisations will be forced to adopt a foreign policy, and whether that one will be amiable or of adversary remains to be seen. Thanks a lot for joining me today, and I'll see you next time in 2275!

The state of the galaxy in 2270

    2275: Skanuri Citizen Commonwealth
  • YEAR 2275

    2273, Tiffim System

Lokorik nervously turned to see the clouds crackle down the EM field, it's sparking illuminations providing the only light on the gang of youths who stole away into the park.

The mega-storms had become commonplace in the seaside town of Bigthik for several decades, the haunting swirls of wind looming ominously across the ocean, churning up the seas and spewing them for miles around. Once or twice these storms came within a few hundred metres of the town, when the winds would rip walls off of buildings and shred the bark off trees. The Electro-Magnetic Field had been put up in anticipation of the worsening climate forcing those monsoon like conditions up through the mountains, ravaging the wildlife as they went; it was many kilmoetres high wall of pulsating energy which utilised the same technology that had sent the Skanuri across the Tiffim system, fending off even the most powerful of gales. Days such as this when the storms were right up on the town were a sight to behold, as the rumbles of the tempest and the friction of the town caused electricity to spark down the field, popping in bright colours more beautiful than any firework display.

Lokorik had finally been allowed to come along with a group of teenagers from his school to hang out with them in the town's park. Usually when the winds were as extreme as they were tonight the park was closed, but the youths made it a habit to vault the low fencing and roam the empty and nocturnal park. Lokorik had never joined them to do this, opting instead to stay home to play in virtual reality, but there had been a female at school he had his eye on for a while. Firan. Her pelt was a deep and endearing purple, her laugh had always intoxicated him. He caught himself looking at her now, laughing with the other males who was with them. She was so beautiful. She-

"Lokorik, are you seeing this?" A friend said as he nudged him, pointing towards a coursing line of white working it's way down the EM Field. "They don't normally do that, you know? To see them run down the Wall like that?"

"Oh yeah, it is pretty nice." He mumbled, hoping to convey that he didn't really care.

His friend sighed, "I kept asking you if you wanted to hang out with us, Lokorik - the guys are alright if you get to know them-"

"As if!" Lokorik spat awkwardly, trying to act cool, "You see them acting up in school, right? I try to talk to them but it always seems like they hate everything - if it isn't the teachers it's some person on social media, or the 'aliens'".

"You know what the problem with aliens is..."

"I know what the problem with everyone else is!" Lokorik snapped, "You always hear about how destructive and evil they'll be, but we've not even met them! Maybe we should actually give them a chance before we start planning out how we're going to take them out!"

"Look, man, I really don't care," His friend spoke belatedly, "I just came here to see the storm and shoot some taffarplant, maybe it was a mistake inviting you after all..."

Lokorik turned to object but his friend had already moved away to join a group at the front of the pack. He quietly cursed himself for being so stupid as to start an argument, and spent the rest of the walk awkwardly listening to the music one of the guys were blasting out of their pod.

Eventually they had arrived to their location, the top of a hill overlooking the entire city. Behind them were miles of mountains, and in front were miles more of storms and seas. Waves of electricity whirred through the wall, creating great illuminations of electric red and blue. Lokorik was speechless; how could he have never seen something as beautiful as this?

"Honestly, I can never get sick of seeing this," one of the leading males said, "We can stay here for a while then. Jujrik, you've got the Taffar right?"

Another boy grinned, "Yeah man, trust me this shit is really good. I tried it out yesterday and was out for like five hours!"

The guys settled down and, amidst the thumping music and cracks of thunder, talked and laughed, exchanging jokes and needles among them. Lokorik sat by the edge of the group, sitting with his arms clasped around his legs and listening into their conversation. He wasn't used to talking too much, and couldn't shake the feeling that he didn't really belong in a group like this.

"Hey, Lok, you want some?" One of the kids asked, holding out a needle for Lokorik to take.

"Oh, no, I'm alright." He said, half-concentrating on what they had to say. He was looking at Firan, sitting at the edge of another group, poking her head in and grinning as some other guys laughed with her. A sharp pang hit Lokorik, and in a moment of courage picked himself up and strode towards her. He offered his palm to one of the guys, who nonchalantly shook it and, as far as Lokorik was concerned, he was in.

He was sitting behind one of the bigger guys, rocking on his haunches as he laughed along with what the guys were saying. He didn't really know many people in this group, but he suspected that many were here to try to chat up Firan. He hated how they laughed along with any of their jokes, cuddled themselves up close to her when they had the excuse, or looked at her for approval whenever she said a joke. Surely Firan wouldn't go out with someone so desperate - unless Lokorik didn't make a move of his own.

Lightning struck the wall, causing it to flash white as the entire town was temporarilty lit up. Many of the boys ran off in drunken, pretend fear, laughing has they jumped about in excite, and to Lokorik's joy Firan was left rolling in laughter by herself. This was his chance.

"Um, hey Firan." He said, waving to get her attention.

"Oh, hey there. It's Lok, is it?" She responded, wiping a tear from her eye.

He brought himself down to her, lying down with her as they watched the swirling wall. For a while he stayed there in silence, looking at the wall as he figured out what to say.

"You know, I've never actually come up here before" He said finally, "I can't believe I've missed out on this view."

"Right?" She giggled, wriggling next to him, "This is the best part of the week - the view, the guys, these things," she wagged a used needle in the air.

"You use those things?" He replied, slightly in shock. This hasn't been how he had envisioned her to be.

"Yeah, of course, everyone here uses them. They don't actually hurt you" She explained, "You want some?"

For a moment Lokorik hesitated, "Why not?" He giggled in responsed, holding his arm out for the excited Firan. She brought out a needle from her pocket and brought it to Lokorik's skin.

"You sure about this?" She asked, looking into Lokorik's eyes.

Lokorik winced. "Sure", he asserted, allowing Firan to pierce into him and press the needle down into his bloodstream, the excitement being the only thing distracting him from how his father would react later.

"This is exciting!" She squealed, snuggling up to Lokorik, "I always thought you were one of those kids who didn't really have a life, and know look at you! I'm almost proud of you!"

"So I guess I'm part of the gang now, right?" He said jokingly, bringing her to lie on his arm.

"I guess so." She responded, "Say, do you know Rill well?

"Rill? Yeah, I think he's in my maths class - what of him?" He asked, slightly concerned as to why he was being brought into this.

"Well - I don't know how to say this - but I was wondering if he said anything about me and him... his dad's a director in the Alien Subjugation Force you know!"

    "You like him?" Lokorik half-snarled.

"Well, yeah... why do you care?" Firan asked, a hint of worry in her voice, "Does he not like you?"

"Did you not see him pawing over you earlier? Of course he likes you, I only thought you'd go for someone a little less desperate than him!" Lokorik spat.

"What is your problem?" Firan demanded, shifting away from him.

"Him and his xenophobic father, that's what! What do you see in him but his hatred for everything different?" Lokorik demanded.

"You're weird, man." Firan laughed, stepping slowly away. The other guys started to come back. Lokorik had ruined his chance. Drugged, drunk and confused, Lokorik staggered away into the park. Into the darkness.

The year is 2275, and with the coming of the 2.2 patch and the Megacorp expansion (which is the only DLC I've actually bought so far), our civilisations have an entirely different system to compete with. Today's instalment was especially focused on the new space-age civilisation to join us, the Skanuri Citizen Commonwealth, unique in the fact that they are the first Fanatical Purifier race to exist. And they've popped up right in the middle of the pocket of small, fractured nation-states right of the Hahn-Mur State

    88F7F4CE223EC2F629216E0839874BE42AB7C569

I'm quite pleased that we've got a new destructive addition to our already tumultuous galaxy, but with their severe disadvantage of being several decades behind their neighbours in terms of research will they be able to bridge the gap between them and carve themselves a galaxy in this divided section of the galaxy?

This next thing I'm about to show you has confused me to no end. Somehow the Vat'na-Ka Civilization, shown in the image below, are now the de facto overlords of the Endurga Civilization, a nation that was both older and more advanced than their southern ally. I'm sorry about this, but I really have no idea how this happened, but this new development will mean that the Vat'na-Ka wield unprecedented power over their portion of the galaxy. With the acquisition of the Endurga and their previous vassal state of the Ytrellan Pious Conclave, the fractured south may have more than just Fanatical Purifiers to worry about.

    FAF37C8D1258B366ED4F05590E37F7D52A942CAD

Finally I wanted to bring attention to a part of the galaxy that has never been talked about before; the west. Somehow the west has not been populated by a single space age civilisation, meaning that an entire arm of the galaxy has been left untouched and ripe for the picking. The powerful Vool Authority have already begun sending expeditionary fleets into this region, and in the north nations such as the Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul have begun to slowly creep down south, but for any would-be expansionists claiming this branch is a race against time - this area is filled with steam-age and above civilisations, many on the cusp of space travel, and to compete with a whole new set of nations would be something our current cast of competitors would like prefer not to face.

    F5BA687CF936792B63960B3E78B494CE9825E82B

That will bring an end to today's instalment. I'd like to take this chance to apologise for not posting in two weeks, there's not a real excuse on my part - I kinda got distracted with playing football manager :p But believe me when I say this trainwreck of a show will bundle on, pitting empires and species against each other while an entirely dynamic galaxy forms before our eyes. There's still a lot of territory up for the taking, but for several empires space is already slim and will soon have to decide what their stance with their neighbours will be.

With that said, thank you so much for reading and I'll see you next time in 2280!

The state of the galaxy in 2275

    2280: Sacrosanct Vhemm Confederacy
  • YEAR 2280

    2279, Frary System

I'm getting too old for this, Nushie-Noo Nip sighed as he heaved himself onto his throne. The council meeting today had lastest far too long - in his opinion, at least - and his evening was shaping up to be exhausting as well. Scrolls upon scrolls lay stacked beside him, and before him a large, intricately detailed map of the known galaxy lay dauntingly. Granted, not much of the galaxy was known to the Vhemm at the moment, so it only proved to exacerbate Nushie-Noo Nip's irritation that the grandeur of the map had to overcompensate their understanding to such a degree.

Nushie had been the Revered Elder of the Sacrosanct Vhemm Confederacy for over 80 years now, and had guided them throughout their early endeavours in space - and he liked to think that he had done a good job. The Vhemm currently stood unchallenged by all bar the frail and decrepit Orassian Shard in the southern constellations, and Nushie had been assured that whatever firepower they have had been amalgamated far away from them, targeting another poor species they now know were called the 'Jaazijan'. Their northern constellations were protected by an amicable species known as the 'Sakyt', and had agreed to become a protectorate under the Vhemm, stylising their new star-nation as the 'Galactic Sakyt Hegemony'.

Another gross overcompensation - the Sakyt were far too feeble for their 'galactic hegemony' to live up to it's namesake.

The Sakyt had proven useful in recent decades, however. Nushie-Noo Nip's warlike nature had garnered attraction in the 'Galactic Hegemony', and relations between the Vhemm and the Sakyt had been rock-solid. The Sakyt became a buffer state between the Vhemm and a northern threat in the newly discovered 'Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul'. It had to be said, they were powerful, but if a war ever did break out between the two of them there was no doubt the Vhemm would overcome the Kingdom and wipe out their autocratic way of life.

Nushie-Noo Nip cackled to himself, then hacked out a cough - truly no-one in the galaxy now to stop their rise.

However, times were changing. Although elections in the Confederacy had become a mere formality, with the repressive police force and the popularity of Nushie-Noo's party keeping him in power for 80 years now, age was beginning to take it's toll. He was 122 now, and his citizens became increasingly aware that a new leader would have to take over soon. But with his own party breaking down into political plays and leadership challenges, and the opposition ramping up pressure for Nushie-Noo to name a successor, the future of the Sacrosanct Confederacy couldn't be more jeopardized.

With such political turmoil occurring in their own systems, there was trouble brewing in the northern constellations. The Sakyt had drifted away from the Vhemm throughout the 2270s, and had acted largely on it's on. Finally, just a mere week ago, they decided to announce that they wished to act independently from now on. They promised that they still wished to uphold their non-aggression pact, but would no longer act as a dependency of the Vhemm anymore. Nushie-Noo wished to act swiftly to crush such a defiance of their treaties, but his government no longer had the influence it once was - the police had laxed it's grip, the people spoke out more. There had been protests against militaristic action, against the rampant elitism in Vhemm society, against the special education granted to select members of society.

Nushie-Noo Nip had led the Vhemm through it's greatest period in history, but could soon leave it in it's darkest time. The galaxy was not so empty anymore. New species were found almost every week, some merely animals, some on the brink of space travel. The Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul grew more powerful, and the Vhemm weaker.

I may have done incredible things, Nushie-Noo groaned, but I have still not done enough. And with that he turned on the light and picked up his first scroll.

    ---

The way the galaxy is shaping up, 2280 looks to be shaping up to be one of the last years of 'isolation' - where empires seem to develop without any knowledge of outside forces. Everyone has discovered at least one neighbour, and distinct clusters of civilisations are emerging in the galaxy. Today's focus had been on the Sacrosanct Vhemm Confederacy, one of the first empires in the game, who have been led by the strangely named Revered Elder Nushie-Noo Nip ever since their founding. They've become quite a force in their own cluster, but have a long way to go to compete with the likes of the Tuxkan Divine Foundation or the Hahn-Mur State.

With the way the hyperlanes are mapped out, the Galactic Sakyt Hegemony to their north protect them from both the Kingdom of Jurg-Sahuul and the Mandate of Riddigus, who have rivalled each other. Neither the Alliance of Poqats nor the Hythean Alliance stand to threaten them. Despite their problems internally, the Vhemm could be considered a powerful contender to become the leading influencer in the north-west.

    56584C856563F8F28ADF38CA901D85119DC68DFF

Another dark horse with massive potential is the Gulk-Furki Empire. This authoritarian and materialistic empire sets itself apart from it's galactic contemporaries in the fact that it's unusually isolated, and they've exploited this fact by rapidly expanding into their surrounding space. Their only neighbour is the Jess-Inax Democratic Worlds, which cannot expand due to the only hyperlanes leaving their home-system lead to Gulk-Furki territory - also due to hyperlanes, the Covenant of Madfiv Vvada is very far away from the Gulk-Furki (I'll make another post soon showing all hyperlanes, for those interested).

The only issue is that the Gulk-Furki are fanatically materialistic, something that becomes an issue when you realise that their closest northern neighbour, the Makaru Autocracy, and their most powerful neighbour, the Tuxkan, are both fanatically spiritualist. However, for now, the Gulk-Furki future looks bright, and they may prove useful in halting the spread of the Tuxkan.

    4E11A6414F6C7BF7CF7670EA91052D3831FA08CF

Speaking of the Tuxkan, let's take another look at them. Unfortunately for their rivals in the Menjeti Theocracy, the spiritualist slavers have increased their influence so much that they are unquestionably the strongest non-FE in the galaxy right now, as the Hahn-Mur State have slowed down growth somewhat (perhaps to maintain their borders so that they look like a penis with a tumour on it's shaft). They reign over 19 different planets, ruling over 116 pops and have enslaved 10 other species. Their economy has boomed and has redefined itself to base it's strength solely on the slave trade, which is one of the most profitable and lucrative businesses there are. Almost two-thirds of the population are directly affected by the trade, either as a salesman, a slave-owner, or as a slave themselves.

Their power is currently unmatched by anyone, although their neighbours do have potential to get up to level terms - the Commonwealth of Patraggor have adopted the same policy of invading primitives, and currently have 15 planets and 90 pops, and have a lot more space to expand into than the Tuxkan, and the Gulk-Furki Empire to the north have already been shown to have massive potential. However, all these are theoreticals, and right now the Tuxkan are far stronger than any of them. We could very likely see a situation where the Tuxkan slavers become the 'bad guy' of the universe, with other empires coming together to try to limit them, but unlike in the movies I'm not fully sure they're going to be stopped.

The question currently is not whether the Tuxkan can control the galaxy, but how much of it they're willing to take.

    81DA9D3FCBCC5AF2DC021CD08BA92399F52DDFDD

That'll rap things up for today. If you're not aware, there was an issue with the save file which made my previous save incompatible with 2.1, which is the version of Stellaris I have to go with. I've gone back to the save in 2270 and have simmed up to 2280, so there will be a few differences you may have noticed from the galaxy map in 2275 with the one now. Barely anything has changed, though, so we will be proceeding with the game as normal. One neat thing that has happened is that new empires have colours now instead of being black and white, which is neat.

Like I've mentioned before, the galaxy is closing up now. Soon alliance blocs will form, and tensions will begin to mount. This is the middling point of diplomacy - we have enclosed 'clusters' of empires, but no galaxy-wide diplomacy or wars are going to happen for a good while now. This is the age where nations decide who is friend or foe, and where the treaties that will define the rest of the game will be signed. This is the age of border tensions and proxy wars. There's still a lot of space left unclaimed, but for many the feeling that the galaxy is becoming less and less empty is becoming apparent.

For once we can finally claim that the galaxy has indeed awoken; whether it will be a dream or a nightmare is yet to be decided. Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you next time in 2285!
