In eu4 battle without leaders is horrible (and it should be) an army without a leader can be destroyed in seconds. Yet because of supply lines and larger scale warfare in the mid-late game, big nations tend to have too few leaders to effectively create armies capable of true warfare. This is why I promote the idea of creating a new one star leader called "Generals de Division" which are tied to the forcelimit of the nation, for every 20 able regiments (Divisions tended to be between 10,000 to 20,000 men strong) you get the ability to hire an upkeep free "General de Division" which would always be a one star leader but would be affected by ideas and technology affecting leadership.

Another idea I would like to propose would be the creation of independent army commands: This would work just like minor allies in war, who would not be controlled by the player but by the AI, and would be given focuses just as vassals and client states are given (Art of War), for an army to be considered independent it would need to have a full General, not a General de Division, they would be granted a name, they would have a slight color change to a lighter tone of its overlord's color, and would act independently as a client states army would, this could be reversed in any moment by the overlord of course and would serve the gameplay feature of less micro-management but still balanced by the number of high grade leaders you can have in your nation, Generals de Division would always need to be managed by the player, unless they are added to an independent command structure under another General.

Thus it could be possible to create as France the so called Army of Italy as independent command with a so called General Bonaparte with a central army, then two more Divisions be added to it, after that a focus is given: Conquer Milan, and off they go, the player has less micro-management to do, is happy to see Italy fall to the hands of Napoleon and the game becomes better and more rewarding because large scale warfare among many fronts is now not a headache but an opportunity for a macro-scale game.
