25/4-2028: En route from Earth to Rhea Captain Joebthegreat slipped on a walkway and fell, hitting his head on a sensor display. GEV Diamond was immediately dispatched from Earth to rendevouz for emergency medical transport, however 2 days out of earth the sad message came back that our brave captain had passed away. An investigation into the event wonders why suddenly so many bananas were assigned to this ship specifically, but no evidence were discovered indicating foul play.

:D:D:D:D:D:D
(damn, where's that rofl smiley when you need it? :D)
Now there's a clear "don't mess with randakar" message if I've ever seen one :)
(yeah, I wasn't fully caught up when I posted my previous message..)

The Fleet Commander wants to inform that he will not give command of heavily armed Ships and Defense Complexes to Commanders who don't prove themselves responsible and completely focused on their duties. With great guns comes great responsibility.

*whistles innocently*

*muttering* Bloody military! Of course the smaller missles take longer to load! They're more fiddly and more dangerous now. But if they trained the crews to use them AS I TOLD THEM TO they wouldn't have his problem. Still the paper in "Astro-Military Science Monthly" on the best way of organizing loading teams seems to have been widely praised.

Yes, those scouts are shortlegged - Still working on gearing up so we can build some that are a bit more sturdy. And yes - Everything that we are building is junked as we move along. I'm more trying to build up the infrastructure and research before committing to large scale building projects. But something might come back to bite me when we leave Sol.

Pyotr Taiisatai Rurikovich assigned Govenor of Titan - Admin 5, Factory Bonus 15%, Wealth 15%, Mining Bonus 25%, Ground Unit Construction +30%

Also, I have some bad news for you. One of my colleagues have just called in sick with a broken leg. Therefore I have asked to take over his training session next week and as such I will be travelling from tomorrow afternoon though Wednesday. I'll get a session in tonight and one tomorrow - After that it will not be before Thursday that the game proceeds. I should be able to follow the thread, unless the hotel is completely bonkers!

2030 will commence now.

I'm more trying to build up the infrastructure and research before committing to large scale building projects.

A good plan... in my game, I came close to running out of critical minerals (until we discovered that insanely rich mining world in Procyon), and ended up refitting the whole fleet about six times. I spent much of the game wishing that I had paid less attention to building a big, obsolete Navy, and more attention to building auto-mines and mass drivers early on. Also... we should research the required tech (Improved Command and Control) and build at least one Sector HQ as soon as possible... it allows two different Admins to give a bonus to each planet. Very handy for boosting Mining, Wealth, Pop growth, Shipbuilding, etc.

2/1-2030: Those civilians are fast - Now they have established a new mining colony on one of the asteroids. Ah,well - More taxes!
7/1-2030: More Infrastructure complete on Earth and a shipload is dispatched to Mars. 20 new terraforming installations are next in line.
12/1-2030: Another civilian mining colony. And Lord Isaac Strange has improved the Magazine feed system to 80%. Next he will see if the technology also can be used for ejection of magazines.
2/2-2030: Commodore OrangeYoshi grows so bored that he actually try training his crew. He gains Crew Training Bonus +25 for it.
12/2-2030: Rhea keeps on improving. This time a deposit of 52k Boronide (0,9) have been located.
And in other news, our beam control can now reach 16.000km. The sensor guys have been instructed to look at the speed/accuracy of the thing now.
27/2-2030: Commodore Boris ze Spider has improved his Fleet Maneuver to 210
12/3-2030: Finally realising that operations might also have something to do with training, Commodore Randakar improves his training bonus to 25.
22/3-2030: Success! Now we can SEE out lasers with the research of visible light lasers! And the scientists tells me that they can also make the turrets track faster! They have promissed to look at it soonest.
12/4-2030: Commodore OrangeYoshi must REALLY be bored! Crew Training now 50.
27/4-2030: You've guessed it - This time it's his Fleet Maneuvering that's improved to 211.
12/5-2030: And Lord Isaac Strange was correct. The feed efficiency could be copied to the ejection system gaining 85% chance of ejection. Next he will see if we can get a bit more explosions out of the warheads! The administration recommends that none disturbs him, since our cleaning crews are on holiday at the moment.
27/5-2030: Polar Mongoose finally passed that admin test he's been having trouble with and has been cleared to handle 10 labs. 5 additional labs have been transferred from sensors to construction.
12/9-2030: Lord Isaac Strange just came by. I don't know what to say, but he claims that exploding a warhead is inferior to Imploding one! He claims that using implosion fissoin warheads will give us a strenght of 3 for each size point we add. If that really is the case, we should ensure that the missiles reach the target, so I've dismissed him back to the labs with instructions to improve the agility of the missiles.
17/9-2030: Further improvement to fuel efficiency have been reached with a 80% done. The team are instructed to assist Lord Strange in getting him some better drives for his missiles.
22/9-2030: Our defense researchers have informed me that they have succeeded in speeding up the recharge of our shields. They have been instructed to design a feasible Shield Design which can be used by our ships.
Also, I had a meeting with Polar Mongoose today. He informed me that he had increased his reseach bonus by 20% and I grumbled that it was about time. He then corrected me that I must have misunderstood him. It was not his personal skill, but all our labs! Research should now be speeding up in all fields! At that news, I just had to give him a slice of pie, before sending him back with instructions to find out how we can harvest Sorium from Gas Giants.
27/9-2030: Rear Admiral Blue Emu continues to think about the use of those fighters that we still don't have. His skill has increased to 45%.
2/10-2030: Thinking back over our discussion a few weeks ago, Polar Mongoose have made some changes to his personal procedures, improving his bonus to 40%.
7/10-2030: The day that many people have been waiting for is finally here. It was a proud day for all of us at the Korean Maritime Repair Service Co. as our first Scout was launched. The SC Leif Erikson transferred to Naval Control today, triggering the following order:

FROM BUREAU OF NAVAL PERSONAL TO CMOD. ORANGEYOSHI - Sir, You are hereby ordered to repair aboard the Federation Scoutship SC Leif Erikson to take upon you the duty of Captain. Fail not in this charge or you will be forced to read Vogon poetry. MSG ENDS.

SC Leif Erikson heads out to find jump points while GEV Diamond is deemed surpluss and sold as scrap.

12/11-2030: FROM BUREAU OF NAVAL PERSONAL TO CMOD. Culise - Sir, You are hereby ordered to repair aboard the Federation Scoutship SC Yuri Gagarin to take upon you the duty of Captain. Fail not in this charge or you will be forcefed Jalapenos for 4 weeks. MSG ENDS. SC Yuri Gagarin joins Leif Erikson in jump point hunting. GEV Emerald joins GEV Diamond in the scrap pile.

17/11-2030: Commodore Vainglory improves survey bonus to 15%
28/11-2030: Bearing 133 degrees from Sol at a range of 9 AU (Just inside Saturn Orbit), Commodore OrangeYoshi and SC Leif Erikson discovers the first Jump Point in Human History. He is instructed to proceed with caution, but to investigate the JP for destination.
1/12-2030 20.00 GMT: SC Leif Erikson disapear from Sol only to blink into existence in Alpha Centauri. A Binary system with 3 Rocky Planets, 6 Gas Giants and 34 Moons. Most interesting is the planet of Alpha Centauri-B IV with a colony cost of 3,42. The JP is located @ 212 degrees and 29AU from the primary. Since the secondary component is almost directly opposite, the distance at the moment is close to 60 AU. OrangeYoshi therefore decide to return to Sol to upload information and continue scanning for additional jump points.
2/12-2030: Cilivian Mining Colony expanded.
7/12-2030: Pyotr Taiisatai Ryrikovich has improved his logistics bonus to 10%
8/12-2030: Commodore Culise don't want to stay behind and therefore locates a JP on his own. This on a bearing of 214 and only 3 AU out from Sol, almost mid between Mars and Jupiter. Some orders apply and SC Yuri Gagarin charges to the exploration.
16/12-2030: SC Yuri Gagarin jumps from Sol to Sirius finding 2 rocky Planets, 1 Gas Giant, 15 Moons and 55 Asteroids. Only marginally colonizable rock makes Venus look like a paradise. 1052 degrees warm is Sirius-III and has a colony cost of 45,65. Culise quickly orders a return to Sol to fully map the system.
28/12-2030: Just as I was about to close down the administration for new year, 2 meeting requests pops up. Well, might as well get the done.
First up, the Energy Weapon Team informs that they have tweaked our turrets so they now track faster! Please with this, I ask them to go and research a larger laser mount than our feeble 10cm lasers.
Finally Lord Isaac Strange informs that he has indeed been able to theorize better agility of our missiles, but since we don't have any at the moment it is for now only theoretical. He is therefore instructed to tour our Ordnance Factories to see if he can improve production speed.

This being the end of 2030, the Federation is proceeding. Mars is now home to 4,6mio colonists with more coming every month. Terraforming is adding Oxygen and JP hunting goes well. Now we can celebrate the New Year before heading back to work 1st of January!

Good progress.

The Fleet Commander wishes good luck to all the Captains and crews of the Scout ships in their task, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. The eyes of the worlds are set upon you. The hopes and prayers of science-loving people everywhere march with you. Godspeed!

Dismissed.

Btw, where can I download this game? I'm intrigued... Plus I want to be able to give some advice.

You can get it from the Aurora forum.

You'll need to FIRST install the last milestone, here: http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php/topic,1830.0.html

... THEN overwrite it with the last full .exe update, here: http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php/topic,3894.0.html

... THEN overwrite that with the last database update, here: http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php/topic,4116.0.html

The game is still in alpha, so there's no "professional" installer for it. You might need to install the windows I/O library msstdfmt.dll as well... you can either google for it, or I can send it to you.

Since the last update came out as a wall of text, I will now switch to half year updates.

8/1-2031: Ok, time to have some fun! I think an Officers purge is what we need, so all officers with no assignments in the last 6 years have been sent to the Gulag. That was a good way to get rid of the hangover from the New Years Party! In total 77 officers now freezes their arses off in Siberia for crimes against the Federation.
13/1-2031: Retooling for Honduras calss tug complete in first yard and construction starts on 2 ships.
13/3-2031: Our defence industri have confirmed today the availability of the brand new Beta R300/12 shields. At the same time they have noted that our ships have an extremely hot exhaust and speculates that this could be detected by potential enemies and requests labs time to reduce this. The administration concurs and reassign labs accordingly.
14/3-2031: Leif Erikson discovers another JP, this time at bearing 31 and 13,3 AU from Sol. Commodore OrangeYoshi have also improved his survey skill to 27% and sets course for the new point.
23/3-2031: Space is vast - So very vast. Commodore OrangeYoshi get's a new perspective on this as SC Leif Erikson arrives in Lacaille 9352, a starless patch of space. After confirming that additional JP's can exist he heads back to Sol to continue the survey.
FROM BUREAU OF NAVAL PERSONAL TO CMOD. BORIS ZE SPIDER - Sir, You are hereby ordered to repair aboard the Federation Scoutship SC Henry Hudson to take upon you the duty of Captain. Fail not in this charge or we will use the bug spray on you. MSG ENDS.
FROM BUREAU OF NAVAL PERSONAL TO CPT. KIWI - Sir, You are hereby ordered to repair aboard the Federation Scoutship SC Thor Heyerdahl to take upon you the duty of Captain. Fail not in this charge or your national Rugby Team will never again win a match. MSG ENDS.
FROM BUREAU OF NAVAL PERSONAL TO CMOD. VAINGLORY - Sir, You are hereby ordered to repair aboard the Federation Scoutship SC Alexander Mackenzie to take upon you the duty of Captain. Fail not in this charge or you will be a cultist in the next 3 WW Big games you attend. MSG ENDS.

28/3-2031: Our power specialists visited today and also asked for Lord Strange to attend through vid-link. Lord Strange was at one of our Ordnance factories and looked annoyed at the interuption. However, his mood improved when he heard that he was getting new drives for his missiles with the latest Nuclear Pulse technology. The Power guys went back to improve power efficiency while Lord Strange disappeared in the inside of a machine at the factory.
2/5-2031: Commodore OrangeYoshi once again strikes gold with a jump point, the fourth in Sol. He will investigate as per normal procedure.
5/5-2031: SC Leif Erikson arrives and transits the Fourth Jump point in Sol. What they find is enough to raise every hair on every crewmember on the ship. They have arrived at a Class II Black Hole. Luckily they can resist the pull of the Black Hole and transis back to Sol. A General ban on this jump gate is set in effect from the administration until further notice.
20/5-2031: In what is becoming strangely routine, Commodore OrangeYoshi reports discovery of the Fifth Jump Point in Sol and he sets course towards it.
24/5-2031: SC Leif Erikson arrives in Procyon. A strange Binary with 3 Rocky Planets, 2 Gas Giants and 37 Moons. The strange the Binary Component orbiting the primary at 15,9 AU while the Gas Giant named Procyon A-VI orbits at 21,3 Billion km. Having found no interesting planets, SC Leif Erikson returns to Sol.
28/5-2031: Lord Isaac Strange visited today and informed that our ordnance production should now be 20% faster. After going over his results, we discussed the possibilities of "parasite ships". He muttered that if we ever were going to use them, we should design the launch bays to match magazines. Considing the point, he was dismissed back to design useable Hangar Space for fighters.

8/7-2031: Commodore Culise finds the sixth jump point in Sol and starts towards it.
13/7-2031: Polar Mongoose today confirmed that he had devised a giant vacuum cleaner and linked it to a fuel refinery devised for a ship. The new "Sorium Harvester" as he calls it can be built now. He is next given the challenge regarding Jump Gates from system to system.
16/7-2031: SC Yuri Gagarin arrives is Ross 248 to find a system with 3 Rocky Planets (none colonization targets) and 17(!) comets. Having confirmed that no valuable real estate exists, Commodore Culise orders the return to Sol and the last survey location.
28/7-2031: Another civilian freighter launched. And we have now constructed the Terraforming installations. These will be transferred to Mars immediately. Construction of additional Research labs is started.
12/8-2031: Gravitational survey have been completed in Sol confirming the existance of 6 Jump points. All scouts are ordered home to Earth for Maintenance before extra-solar exploration begins in earnest.
14/8-2031: Geologists complete the survey of Triton finding an additional 200k of Duranium (0,7). The team is transferred to Proteus.
19/8-2031: Logistical Planners have today presented the planned ToA of a Garrison Battalion. Thanking them, they are now instructed to start looking at Sector Commands.
At the same time Both SC Thoy Heyerdahl and SC Henry Hudson completed overhauls and headed our for explorations. After discussions in the Administration it was decided that SC Henry Hudson under Commodore Boris ze Spider would transis Laceille 9352 jump point for Gravitational Survey in the starless nexus while SC Thor Heyerdahl under Captain Kiwi would transit to Ross 248 for Geological and Gravitational Survey.
24/8-2031: SC Alexander Mackenzie also completes overhaul and Commodore Vainglory is directed to proceed to Sirium for Survey.
29/9-2031: Captain Kiwi improves fleet maneuvering to 196.
3/10-2031: Third Civilian Freighter launched.
8/10-2031: The power guys are back - This time the have found a way to increase power by 5% at a cost of 10% efficiency and a 7% explosion chance if taking damage. Power is good! And to be planning for the future and better engines, they have been sent back with instructions to improve our reactor technology to enable better engines.
13/10-2031: The Energy Weapon team reported that they had indeed improved the size of our lasers from 10cm to 12cm. They now want to focus on the wavelenght to increase damage. The Administration likes damage. Request approved!
13/11-2031: SC Leif Erikson completes overhaul and after flipping a coin with Commodore Culise, Commodore OrangeYoshi heads towards Alpha Centauri. SC Yuri Gagarin will handle Procyon when overhaul is complete.
18/11-2031: Having completed overhaul, Yuri Gagarin heads towards Procyon.
18/12-2031: Lord Isaac Strange have completed investigations in how a hangar deck should be constructed. He believes he can use part of his recent discoveries to improve the reloading of our launchers even further. Needless to say, he get's permission to pursue this line of thought.

And thus ends 2031. The officers have invited me to their New Years party to avoid another purge. We'll see about that. I've decided to bring along Randakar and Reis91 and force them to taste everything first. We'll see what happens.

Ok, first page updated with info and no further progress will take place tonight. I will get another year in before having to go to the airport tomorrow afternoon. Now, I'll go watch a movie and will check in again in a few hours. Council is in session till 08.00 GMT. Suggestions and critique for the Administration should be presented before the next purge... ehhh... Next session tomorrow morning.

Joeb's son wants to be a scientist. If that isn't available, then a governor.

Yeah, my friend quoted some figures to me that sounded impressive, but then at the time I knew very little about the game. He said that CIWS aren't worth having though, which I haven't heard elsewhere.

When's startup? I'm trying to cut down on time spent here as I rapidly approach my end of semester.

I have a spreadsheet I can plug various combinations of tech, barrel numbers, fire control, missile salvo size and speed etc into. GPD quickly becomes highly efficient, due to shear mass of fire.

The main problem with CIWS is that it only covers the ship with it installed. You can build a much more flexible system of dedicated GPD just as efficiently in terms of space, and the only real draw back is you can't install it on civilian ships.

Game starts whenever I get enough people, I have about 19 now and would like 30. So possibly not then.

I like the personalised threats :D

The Administration strives to please!

Furthermore - get rid of that spreadsheet! The only way you can succeed is to build the ship, send it into combat and hope you can figure out why it exploded.

Joebthegreat II have joined our scientific community. Admin 3, Power & Propulsion 15%.

I'm quite happy with the direction that things are going. I suggest that whenever we don't know what our Construction Factories should work on, they should build more automated mines, in anticipation of some good mineral strikes in the neighbouring systems. You can NEVER have enough automated mines. The only thing I can think of off-hand that would take priority over that (as far as construction goes) is a Sector Command, once the required tech is complete.

Once we get better engine techs and more powerful Tugs, we can look at researching and building some Habitat Modules. They would enable us to colonize any system that isn't completely empty.

I can only agree with this. Only problem at the moment is that we are running low on a certain little thing called Corundium, so it is a bit limiting the number of mines we can construct. We are getting enough to build around 1 mine per month. At the moment we are constructing 10 new labs and that's a 2 year+ project with the current number of construction factories. Financial centers will need to be constructed as well, even though the civilian trading/mining is helping a bit on the deficit, which is under control (-50 or so per month with over 13k still in the bank).

The idea is that we don't have any contact to our scouts before they return to Sol and therefore I will not post any updates on the survey until they return and at that time, I will report the information gathered. My scouts are automated so I don't have to look at them all the time... :) - A jump gate will count as a communications line, but if there's no gate, there's no communications drones coming home.

I have hopes for Alpha Centauri to give some good mining spots, but there is the range problem. If it is found in AC-B component, we can wait some years and the B-star will pass within 100mio km. of the jump point to Sol. But will suck if we have to go the distance now. Don't even think that our freighters have the endurance without tanker support. And that makes it a 1 year+ roundtrip.

But we really need to find some specific minirals as per page 1 fairly fast. Specifically Sorium and Gallicite but Neutronium in a high concentration would be nice as well.

Titan supplies only Duranium and Neutronium in decent quantites... if neither of those two minerals is in particularly short supply, perhaps we should move those 50 auto-mines over to join the hundred already on Rhea? That would increase our Corundium stocks, and allow somewhat faster mine construction.

Doesn't editing .dll files do bad things sometimes?

This is a standard Microsoft .dll file. the name msstdfmt even means "microsoft standard I/O format". You can download it directly from microsoft's own website (for free).

EDIT: what operating system are you running?
