Strength and Honor - A Norway AAR

Wow, that is quite the colonial empire you've got? Are they all colonies, or are some trading posts. Very nice in Germany, though! :D What about that Venetian thorn sticking out in between Italy and Germany?
 
Some are trading posts. But they are still mine :D

About 33% are trading posts I would say, and there are many unfinished colonies. But the lands taken from the Scraelings are of course cities, and the first settled areas of Markland and Original Vinland discovered by Leif Sigurdsson (New Foundland, Nova Scotia to Manhattan and up north to Belle isle), and the areas explored by Erlend av Losna (Lousiana to Rio Grande area). Venice is no treath, I have good realtions with them, and as the rest of the "second class powers" they are fighting constant wars and rebellions. Much of Spain is in revolt by the way, and Navarra has seceded. What troubbles me is the fact that Aragon and Spain have neglected their former hostilities and formed an alliance, this might cause troubble for me in the future when declaring war on Spain if they start abusing the Treaty of Tordesillas. I am sorry to say that France is no longer a friend, I just fought a war with them and the military access is now canceled. I do not "control" France and Iberia anymore and the only way into Spain is by sea or through Portugal. However, in return, I control Italy which is a very good thing concidering my road towards Mediterranean domination. A shipjard is also being constructed in Modena and I got a navy of 44 ships stationed there under the command of Vise Admiral Magnus Egilsson. Just as a note, Halfdan Sveinsson got so bad wounded during a siege of Rome in 1569 that he had to retire, it was a great loss, but the Empire still has some good generals.

General Hlynur Bjarnisson (4/3/4) in Netherlands surpressing revolts, Lord Admiral Harald Nesheim (4/4/4) in North Sea, Vise Admiral Magnus Egilsson (4/4/3) in Mediterranean and Explorer Jon Markusson (6/3/3) in the Guandong, refilling supplies for his way back home from Australia to get more ships.
 
That is truly a vast empire and you still have a good two hundred years and change to go. I would not be surprised if at this rate Norway expands over the face of europe by the early 18th century and consumes the mideast and parts of asia before the 19th century dawns.
 
Machiavellian: I did not want to make it too easy for me (allthough surpreme leaders in the 16th century), so I have made some nasty events coming later... I survived the civil war event, but will I survive having three terrible kings, lack of leaders and a republican revolt in adittion to the rising strength of Russia and the Ottomans and my plan to increase difficulty and furiousity? :D

The leaders are modified from when I played the game though, I felt some leaders had to be tweaked down, still probably has (Yngvar will never be tweaked down :D).

How generous of you to help the Sultan. I can't believe that was from entirely uninterseted motives though.
 
I played as the Ottomans (switching between Ottomans and Norway, just so that the AI wouldn't mess up Norway meanwhile) for a couple of years and defeated the Mameluks. I think the war between the Ottomans and Russia started because Georgia broke vassalage and declared war on Ottomans, Russia invited Georgia to alliance and declared war on Ottoman Empire. I can just sit back, relax and... wait, I can't relax, there are revolts everywhere, nvm...
 
I say push down through France, make them a vassal and then take it to Iberia by land. Once done, let's see some of that red colored empire in China!!
 
In all of my games post-1750, the Ottoman have never gone into the Mamelukes lands. Once the Mamelukes invaded Eastern Asia Minor and got a higehr score than the Turks, tho.

Good luck with all the revolts! I imagine your have a tough time dealing with so many religions! ;)
 
Yngvar's last breath

Charles went to get Yngvar another horn of mead, while drinking it, the old man stared out of the window. He saw a small escourt of men on their horses, riding towards Yorkshire Castle after unloading from a ship.
"They are coming my young friend, let us go out and welcome them."

Emperor Håvard: "Father!"

Yngvar: "My son! Come here and hug your old man on his 72th birthday."

The old man gave his son a big hug and opened the door to him, they went inside.

Håvard: "I want you to meet my wife, Sigrid Halfdansdottir."

A beautiful woman walked in the door, Yngvar greeted her in the manner he always do when he meets a woman and kissed her hand.

Yngvar: "May I ask of which family this fair lady is of?"

Sigrid: "I am the doughter of Halfdan Sveinsson, your former general."

Yngvar: "It sounds like you have found a good marriage Håvard, may I ask you where your father is now young Sigrid?"

Sigrid: "He passed away last year, after my marriage with your son. He was badly wounded in the siege of Rome and died later of the wounds."

Yngvar: "I am sorry to hear, he was a good man. I suppose there are more deaths to come to the old generation that formed the Empire. Håvard, my son, I am not to stay long on this earth, my body is weak and my brain is failing, I believe my life will end soon. I can only pray that the lord will have mercy on me and let me in to heaven after all those deaths I have caused."

Håvard: "Father, you are not dying you fool, you shall come back to Norway with us now and stay there for many more years."

Yngvar: "Do not speak to your father like that, I shall come back with you to Norway but I do not think I shall live for very long. Before we go, I think you shall meet this young Englishman who has been my servant and a good listener to my tales for these last months. I do not wish him to live his life as a poor peasant in England, these last days he have written a saga of what I told him of my life, he is a good writer, I ask you to take him to Oslo and let him stay at Akershus to write your saga. Karl!"

Charles rushed down the stairs, when he saw Håvard he bowed down.

Håvard: "It seems like the boy has good manners, I shall take him with me to Norway as you say. Let me have a look at the saga you have written of my father."

Håvard went upstairs to his father's sleeping room and took a look at the book for some hours before going down the stairs again where he found the others waiting.

"Karl, where is your parents by the way? I shall make sure they become more wealthy than they have ever dreamed of..."

Charles: "My lord, they live in the city of York, my father's name is Harold Hastings, that is Harald Heisthingi in Norse."

Håvard: "Very well, Thorir, ride to York appoint Harald Hesthingi to town governor, I shall sign here... Take with you four men, Håkon, Herman and Thorir, and Vilhjalm (William) in case they have not learned the state language yet."

Yngvar: "Sounds great, shall we leave now? Let us just get to the ship right away."

During the journey across the north sea, Yngvar told Håvard of his journey.

Håvard: "That was a long journey father, I am glad you came back in good health. However, was it so smart to help the Sultan?"

Yngvar: "I think it can be concidered smart, before I left the Tsar, I said to him that the Ottomans could become a treath and advised him not to get too friendly with them, I told him to watch out in case they started expanding. Before leaving the Sultan, I told him to not look too bright on Russian expansion. And as you know, they are both in wars against eachother now. But tell me what has happened in the Empire lately, I would like to know."

Håvard: "It sounds good, a war between Russia and the Ottomans. It will surely prevent them from doing any wars with us, and about the Ottomans, they will probably be more friendly to us in the coming years. I have just recieved a letter from the Turkish Sultan with nothing but fine words, thanking for your help (OOC: Event).
As you know, there have been some ongoing wars, the Pope have become our little puppet, and we can now indirectly guide the entire Catholic world. The Teutons have been reduced to one state, the Lenape has been annexed and we are discussing with Cologne and The Palitanate about a possible incorporation into the Empire's direct control (OOC: happened in 1573 and 1574). I shall inform you of the council of Trent, a meeting that took place between me, the Pope and the King of Aragon where we decided to go counter-reformed. The purpose of the meeting was to deal with the Protestant and Reformist heretics, I am sure you agree on this.
Did I forget to tell you father, that me and Sigrid have gotten a son? His name is Eirik."

Yngvar: "You have governed the Empire well, I thank you for that my son, I will pray that you live many more years to guide this great nation and that little Eirik becomes a good king when his time comes. The acts against Protestant and Reformist heretics are wise. Now I must rest, I will look forward to see Norway one last time."

They arrived in Oslo after a weeks journey. When the people saw the old man arriving with his son, the masses cheered in joy to see the return of the old king. Yngvar got to see his grandson and have one last christmas in Norway before passing away peacefully in early January, 1573. Yngvar's last words to his son were "Strength and honor".

I agree, very sad but right that King Yngvar should pass on finally. He was rather old and had accomplished so much. So will we see what Havard can accomplish as well?

Thank you, nice to see people reading. I also tought it was about time to end his life, I believe he lived a little further than the expected male age at the time :p

Poor King Yngvar (sniff) What a legacy he left on Norway, though (sniff) A very well written ending of his life. Tres Bien!
