January 1st, 1936

As most of the world was celebrating the New Year, not everyone was so cheerful. King George V lied in his bedchamber, his health, both mental and physical failing. Acting in his absentee, Prime Minister Mackenzie King worked into the night while the Empire celebrated, making decisions concerning production, technology and the shape of the government. He ordered Imperial Oil to begin researching techniques that could lead to breakthroughs in Industry, for the Canadian Pacific Railway to find a way to easier transport troops and supplies quicker and more efficiently while Vicker-Armstrong began to design a new class of Naval Carrier, although the Board of Directors wasn't sure it was going to keep the reaserch up if it wasnt showing progress within the first few weeks. Also, he passed legislature which moved the Nation farther from isolationism and instead towards interventionism, making any declaration of war easier and less troublesome in the future.

The Political Situation

Mackenzie King acted as the Head of State until the 20th of January...

TheDeathofKingGeorgeV.jpg

The Death of the King meant Edward, Prince of Wales would soon take the throne. For days, The Empire mourned the Death of the King, who had ruled the Empire since 1910. His transition from this World to the next was painless, and it was only by God's grace that he survived as long as he did.

With the death of the King comes a possible new age for the Royal Family, her allies and the Empire States. R.B. Bennett and the Conservative Party, still bitter over their defeat in the Election of 1930 were planning to use the "Prince of the People" to pursue their own agenda, knowing he could be easily influenced.

The Prince, acting on the wishes of his senile, dying father sided with Bennett and the Exiles and the Conservative Party took control.

While there was protest from some Native Canadians over the decision to side with the Exiles, who's main and arguably only priority is retaking the Empire, it mostly went unchallenged.

After his corronation, the King began to prepare for his first radio address. It would be written by the new King himself and broadcast from Vancouver Island to Saint John. When it was time to make the address...

By then, January had passed and February was just beginning. It was a New Month that saw a New King and it became clear just what road Canada was headed towards.

With the removal of those who were not loyal to the Conservatives from office, Bennett decided to take it one step further. When the question of keeping Lord Field Marshall Ironside as Commander of the Army arose, he quickly sought to replace him to help secure his own position and make changes as he saw fit.

He advised Edward VIII to replace Ironside with Kenneth Stuart, a firm believer in tank warfare and a veteran of 1925, veteran of the counter-revolutions of both Paris and London.

Long live Edward VIII...Huh, what I'm saying?

He's quite a determined figurehead: does he still have his skills of Autocratic Charmer? If yes, he's quite a pain for your industry.

He is in Vanilla HOI2. :p

Interesting setup there.

Following.

Masked Pickle: Yeah, hes an autocratic charmer, which means theres a -10% to industry but another one of my ministers has a +10% to industry so its evens out.

Sematary: Thats the direction the country is moving in. The 2nd American Civil War is going to be a pretty big part of the early AAR, along with intervention in a few other places in Canada's backyard. You'll have to read to find out ;)

Thanks for the postive replies everybody, picking up more of a bandwagon then I expected. :)

Drive the labour union scum from Britain and North America! Fight on! Mobilize! GOD SAVE THE KING!

Er, yes. Canada AARs=win, and this is a hellaciously detailed one, so I applaud your detail and determination. Good luck, and may the Reds, the Huns and the Yanks all fall before Canuck arms.

Black Monday; The Day Berlin Shook

BlackMonday.jpg

On Monday, February 4, 1936, the Berlin Stock Market stopped simply declining, it plunged. On one day, the market fell 38 points to 260, a drop of 12.8% It was a day of chaos, and its effects on the World's economy, especially in Eastern and Central Europe, China, South America will be disastrous.

The Battle of the Overpass

In Detroit, Michigan, Automotive Capital of the World, leaders of the United Auto Workers Walter Reuther and Richard Frankensteen called a general strike against the Ford Motor Company and begin which they called "Unionism, Not Fordism," demanding higher pay and less hours. At 2:00 PM today, a photographer from the Detroit Free Press asked to take a photo of the Leaders of the UAW standing on the overpass with the Ford sign in the background. While they were posing, 40 men with batons from the Ford's Service Department, an internal security force came from behind and began to beat them. The group then beat some of the beret-wearing women arriving to pass out leaflets.

This event has become another one of the unifying symbols of the American Socialist and Syndicalist movements. Already, a song has been written by Earl Robinson, memoralizing the day the Ford Motor Company put those union scum in their place, although the song was slanted the wrong way.

The Burning of the Head-Office

At 21:15 on the night of February 11, 1936, a Guilin fire station received an alarm call that the Head-Office, the assembly location of the Board of Directors, was ablaze. A Chinese Nationalist by the name of Lee-Hom Ren was arrested at the scene of the blaze two hours later. There was a warrant out for his arrest, and after three hours of enhanced interogation he confessed to the Arson and was shortly after executed.

March, 1936

Time moved slowly for the next two months. Progress was made in the development of a transport fleet, now a total of 10 transports have been commissioned while little research has been made. Development of a new class of Air Carrier was abandoned by Vickers-Armstrong after little to no forward progress was being made. Instead, Vickers-Armstrong was given a contract to research a new development in field artillery, "early artillery". Research was completed months later, Imperial Oil and the Canadian Pacific Railway lagged behind in their research.

The Conservatives continued to make progress in setting the stage for gearing the country for war, while others were getting in the way.

In Venezuela, their largest and most profitable export to the world is oil. The oil fields in Maracaibo are some of the largest in the world, and Imperial Oil has a contract with the Venezuelan government to harvest and refine that oil, but President Juan Bautista Pérez, begged by the Congress to return to office in Caracas after his retirement to help sooth the effects of the Berlin Stock Market Crash has made a very big error.

Venezuelan troops seized the oil fields and have begun to do our job themselves, cutting us and our profit out from the equation. Now, our friends in Nationalist France can not keep their industry afloat and our own oil reserves are running low, but does Venezuela care?

So the House of Lords has decided to act. They have given the full support of Edward VIII and R.B. Bennett in any diplomatic action that is taken. Nothing is off the table when the blood of the Empire is at stake.

Some Liberals in the House of Lords are worried about the American reaction, making reference to the Monroe Doctrine, but the Monroe Doctrine states European powers would no longer colonize or interfere with the affairs of the newly independent nations of the Americas. Mackenzie King was shown as a quite a jackass, obviously mistaking North America for Europe.

To show Mr. Bautista Pérez we mean business, the Crown Royal Fleet has been rebased first to long island, and is now sitting off the Venezuelan coastline.

Also, as another very inconspicuous gesture, showing no hint to what might be in store, 5 divisions under the command of Lt. General McNaughton have been transported from Saint John to Long Island to be used if our gun-boat diplomacy fails to convince the Venezuelan government of it's wrong-doing.

The Long Island force is made up of the Halifax 1st Corps, made up of two divisons (4th and 5th) under the direct command of McNaughton.

The Saint John Royal Marines Division under the command of Mj. General Mountbatten joined the force days later followed by the Quebec City 2nd Corps, lead by Lt. General Crerar.

They think just because they're the largest exporter of oil in the World and that their own people use wood stoves to heat their homes means that they can revoke the Empire's oil contracts, they are sorely mistaken.

Awesome subject for AAR. I played a Royal Canada game in one of the earlier versions of Kaiserriech, its a fun nation so many options.

Well done so far, and show Venezuela that the British Empire hasn't completely lost its bite.

Good Show and Good Luck.

I love seeing the maple leaf flag (I know there's a crown in it but you can hardly see it in that picture) hanging above the carriers. I will definately follow this one, and I wish you good luck in your plans. :D
