OOC: Well, look at it this way.

Or Finland gave up those lands now and got some money, or the russians take them in 2 turns and give finland nothing but death in return.

That's a good deal, eh?

OOC: Germany's fighting France, Italy, Hungary and Bohemia ATM, and Finland ain't that relevant...

As for Sweden, IMHO they're still hurt by the economic blow they took from both their expansion in the early 1900s and the Crisis, just look at their debt. Simply put, Sweden doesn't have either the bank or the muscle to stop the Ruskies.

Pluss, the other powers are now more keen in getting another power in continental Europe to blance that new giant germany

OOC: wow, i didn't know Germany was in such a pinch. I'm working on getting up to date on this thread but some things slip through the cracks.

The Russian Empire announces today that the Purchase of 1916, as it's called the land selling of Finland is a clear message to the world that conflicts can be solved without the sacrifice of young men lives. How the quill is stronger than the sword. A complete difference with the new conflict that started in Central Europe. Due to the fact that most of the Great Powers have been increasing their armed forces in the past years, the Duma passed last week an increase in the military budget of the Russian Army, to be at least pair to pair with the rest of the powers in matters of military might.

Finally we ask the German Empire, to avoid increasing the length of this European war and try to agree with the other nations involved a peace treaty that will satisfy all countries. If plebiscites are to be made, let them be, here in Russia we did it in the past with Ukraine and we never complained about it. If we can do it, then you also can.

The United French Communes

The United Communes note without surprise the spinelessness and timidity of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which will only commit militarily to endeavors in which other nations guarantee to carry the entirety of the actual burden and no risk whatsoever might in any way accrue to them. This is further proof that these so-called governments, both in the Netherlands and Spain, exist only to quail before the iron fist of the oppressor and to abandon other freedom-seeking peoples at a moment's notice. Their time as relevant powers is over, condemned to the dust-bin of history, to be replaced by nations with the will and the ability to grasp freedom with their own hands.

United by a common desire for social justice and unhesitating revolutionary zeal, the Communes of France are not so easily dissuaded from this righteous crusade against German aggression. Together with our allies in the Pact of Amiens, we shall march forward tirelessly against the German foe and liberate the lands he seeks to crush underfoot. We call upon the true freedom-loving nations of Europe, those nations who do not embrace weak-willed appeasement but rather seek to create a future that they themselves determine, to join us in fighting the German foe, rather than allowing the Kaiser in Berlin to choose their fates for them.

We know that the Germans do not seek diplomacy, do not seek a fair or just end to this conflict, for their goal is nothing less than the total military domination of Europe. While France and Italy, while Bohemia and Hungary, all stand against this unlimited tyranny, we call upon the other nations of Europe to shed the false peace of neutrality and accept the moral imperative that is armed intervention against Germany. If they stand idly by, if they refuse to accept the truth of the matter, then they shall soon be next on the Kaiser's list, and they will find themselves entirely alone.

~ Alexandre Millerand, Chairman of the Revolutionary Council of the Communes of France

Her Majesty's Government vigorously protests the proclamation issued by the Communist Government, being laced in invectives against us and couched in such terms as to suggest imminent war and conquest. We have condemned the conduct of the German Government in the strongest possible terms; we formulated the Troelstra Peace Plan and sought support from all the nations of Europe for its implementation. When our efforts to uphold peace failed, we resigned ourselves to conflict, upholding our neutrality so that our nation should not be ravaged by a war conspired between the German Empire and the Amiens allies. Her Majesty's Government refuses to engage in the paradoxical policy of making war to secure peace.

More grievous were the insults - for no other term applies - that we have been subjected to. The Communist Government alleges that we are mere parasites, subsisting off the toil of others. Such allegations are blatant falsehood: the Kingdom of the Netherlands spearheaded the intervention in China, contributed half of its armed forces to the campaign, and at one point held the line around Hong Kong single-handed; all in defence of the international settlements, none of which were her own. The Dutch people have already incurred the loss of 50,000 of their sons on foreign shores. We shall not demand another such sacrifice of the people, so soon after peace has been achieved, and in a war that was not of our design.

Should the Communist Government maintain its aggressive posture against us, the Kingdom of the Netherlands shall seek assurances for her safety, and that of her sister states, the Kingdom of Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg, from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the German Empire, as per the Treaty of London of 1839.

Her Majesty, Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands

Order No. 270: January 16, 1916

To stiffen the resolve of Royal Italian Army and ensure that every man fights to the death.

I hereby order:

Commanders and soldiers who during battle tear off their insignia and desert to the rear, or give themselves up as prisoners should be considered criminal deserters and their families be subject to arrest as families of deserters, who breached their oath and betrayed the Fatherland. Higher ranking commanders and Agents of Royal of Committee of Internal Affairs must shoot out of hand such deserters among the Royal Italian Army.

When surrounded by the enemy, units and sub-units should fight selflessly to the utmost, cherishing their equipment as they would their love ones, to break out in order the reunite with their unites at the rear of the enemy. If a breakout is impossible, encircled unites will fight to the last man.

Commanders of divisions must immediately remove from their posts, commanders of battalions and companies who are hiding in the trenches at time of battle and are afraid to lead the course of combat on the battlefield, demote them as imposters and if necessary shoot them on the spot. Replace them by bold courageous people from amongst the junior command or from amongst outstanding soldiers.

This order will be read out to all members of the Royal Italian Army.

Victor Emmanuel III, by the Grace of God and the Will of the Nation, King of Italy, King of Sardinia, Grand Marshal of Italy

The United French Communes

While the United Communes would find itself unsurprised should the Dutch government call upon foreign nations to defend it against mere rhetoric, we believe such a step would be entirely unwarranted. Our policy towards the Netherlands is not one of aggression but rather exasperation; having been assured that a German rejection of their peace plan would lead to some kind of substantive action by the Dutch, we wasted precious time and energy corresponding on the subject, time which could have been better devoted to virtually any other pursuit or endeavor given the eventual result. Diplomatic condemnation is entirely meaningless against the iron-shod heel of German military oppression, a threat to all of Europe which may only be stopped by meeting it in kind. To attain peace, one must indeed go to war.

Our warnings of military conquest were in fact related to the German-speaking minorities present within the states mentioned by the Dutch government, including their own, who are likely to be the next avenue of attack pursued by the German Empire's limitless imperial ambition should they not be stopped here. We had considered it obvious, a point not worth even debating, that the United Communes have sufficient enemies as it stands, and do not pursue a policy of aggression toward any state. Our chastisement of the Dutch government is merely a reflection of their own broken promises and any effort to cast it as some form of aggressive posturing rather than simple irritation is patently ridiculous.

~ Alexandre Millerand, Chairman of the Revolutionary Council of the Communes of France

Her Majesty's Government has never adhered to the Treaty of Amiens. Despite the repeated overtures by the Communist Government, we never committed this Kingdom to war with the German Empire on any condition; nor did we offer any assurances of military involvement. In fact, it was our policy to studiously avoid the efforts of the Communist Government to entangle us in this war. We cooperated with the Amiens allies only in forwarding our plans for negotiated peace; never did we entertain, propose or accept Dutch involvement in the war. As such, the claims of the Communist Government that we have 'betrayed' their cause run truly false. If any one has been betrayed, it is Her Majesty's Government, which once thought the Communist Government a mutual partner in peace, only to be flagellated and spurned at the hands of the latter for refusing to embroil itself in war.

If the Communist Government believes it may dictate the foreign policy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, then this is truly a revolution in its most literal sense, since the French appear to have reverted to the imperialist mindset of Napoleon Bonaparte. For having the audacity to organise our own independent policies, Her Majesty's Government and her Spanish counterpart have had their very legitimacy called into question. We were the very first to state the dangers of establishing a precedent whereby the German Empire could wage war against sovereign states that possessed German minorities. More dangerous a precedent, however, is that whereby the very independence and sovereignty of a nation is called into question for its refusal to abide by the dictates of French Communes.

If the Communist Government shall castigate and condemn any government that refuses to unflinchingly follow its decrees, then it shall find itself outnumbered not just in the present, but in the foreseeable future. The Kingdom of the Netherlands shall resist any effort to violate its time-honoured independence and subvert its national sovereignty, regardless of wherever such efforts should originate from.

The United Communes acknowledge their manifest failure in expecting some form of response from the Dutch beyond meek acceptance of their rejection; we fully intend not to make the same mistake in the future and will henceforth refrain from expecting anything beyond hollow words from the Kingdom of the Netherlands. We suggest, however, that the Dutch government refrain from its high-minded calls for freedom and diplomacy given its manifest inability to support its supposed ideals with any form of action, lest they continue to further consign their nation to international irrelevance.

Furthermore, we have no designs on the foreign policy of other nation-states, another bombastic claim by the Dutch government which carries little weight among anyone with a functioning brain. Should the Dutch wish to passively acquiesce to German military imperialism, that is of course their sovereign right as a free nation, though perhaps not for long given their significant German-speaking minority and Germany's expansionist policies. We do not dictate, nor do we require; if the Dutch do not wish to sign the Pact, that is their business entirely and the matter ends there. If the Dutch are unwilling to accept the criticism that naturally arises from their speedy abandonment of any position which might require actual courage to support, then perhaps they should refrain from entering into the field of international diplomacy in the first place.

~ Alexandre Millerand, Chairman of the Revolutionary Council of the Communes of France

If the Communist Government has nothing to offer other nations but patronising, high-handed scorn for their perceived failure to unfailingly support France, then perhaps they would likewise do well in refraining from entering into the field of international diplomacy, for their continued activity in this area shall succeed in achieving nothing but further isolating their already precarious position.

When Her Majesty's Government announced its intention to remain neutral, we condemned the conduct of the German Government in our statement and upheld our commitment to a peace plan that was favourable to the Amiens alliance. It was the decision of the Communist Government to then launch a spiteful, specious attack on the Dutch people and their government; and so render both hostile to their cause. We sought to maintain friendship with the French Communes; instead, we were defamed in such a manner that could provoke only an immediate reciprocal response, for silence would have been perceived as acceptance of the most fallacious, juvenile and disgraceful document Her Majesty's Government has ever received from another nation that she was not currently at war with. Indeed, the late Qing State offered more courteous correspondence in war than the Communist Government has in peace.

Since we are apparently admitting insults into diplomatic discourse, now, we can only condemn as idiocy a foreign policy programme that denigrates potential partners at the first sign of reluctance, and so renders them ultimately inaccessible to your cause. If there was a possibility for Dutch involvement in the European crisis, then the Communist Government - and not Her Majesty's Government - has succeeded in making it impossible.

Statement of the Bohemian Princess concerning the ongoing dispute between France and the Netherlands

To the honorable representatives of France, to her royal majesty, Queen Wilhelmina,

I guess I speak for the people of Bohemia-Moravia as well if I remain baffled on your current quarrels. The citizens of our state are glad for both of your support be it by direct intervention or by morale support. Both are of equal value to us in our current situation. We do not care about ideologies or belief but for the act. If you act in the right way you deserve to be praised. Both France and the Netherlands stood up to German terror and tyranny and thus should be praised for that.

I therefor humbly ask for you to put aside you qualms and do not try to open new wounds. We have a common foe as it is and afterwards should rebuild Europe peacefully together. Imagine what we are able to achieve together though we will fall if we are divided again.

Princess Milena Jesenská, by the vote of the people Queen-elect of Bohemia-Moravia
