A group of cargo ships had entered the port of San Diego during the night, as the sun was rising, curious people gathered around in the harbour to wonder what the ships were doing there. The ships appeared abandoned, untill at precisely 8.00 am, a trumpet was blown. A landing bridge was lowered simultaniously from all the ships and then, nothing. Minutes went by, the people were whispering questions to each others, wondering what was going on, what were the ships carrying.
Then, it appeared from the largest ship. The most beautifull thing one could see in the eve of annihilation by Germans.
A kiwi.
The tiny bird was followed by a general, and behind him, men, armed soldiers.
The general addressed the people gathering to watch the soldiers and equipment starting to get unloaded from the ships.
"People of San Diego! I am General Bernard Freyberg of the 1st New Zealand Army. Much has your country bled during the first months of this war, but I can say, that you will not bleed alone anymore! We will defend this city with our blood and our lives! And as I speak to you, more ships are roaming the Pacific. The entire Australian armed forces, led by General Blamey are nearing the Canadian shores in north, the Indian divisions are being transported along the entire west coast. Even the British are organizing an expeditionary force to be sent to fight in Canada.
Germans are far from their home, they have been slowed down by the mountains and deserts that are blocking the path to the Pacific. It is here, where we shall make our stand, it is here, where we shall see our first triumphs, and it is here, where the outcome of this war shall be decided! Be it victory, or death, we stand united!"
The crowd was roaring in joy, as the general finished and began giving orders to the officers and men, who suddenly were everywhere in the harbour.
So far the Wehrmacht has been undefeatable, rolling over most of Europe and North-America. But the tides are turning, the Allied fleets are scouring the Atlantic Ocean, taking back the naval supremacy, Axis-occupied Atlantic islands are being invaded to prevent their use as bases, the initial demoralizing shock is over, resulting in a strong fighting spirit for the Allies.
And now resistance is gathering up at the west coast to meet the Germans on land. ANZAC, Indian Army, British Forces and the remnants of the american divisions, a strong fighting force as such, but is it enough to stop the Axis advance?
