Immediately into her reign, several Frankish lords rallied around Ado the Wise and rebelled against Frotlina's rule."

I'm honestly surprised that the Khazars got that far.

The Frankish realms suck. I suppose the memory of Tours is keeping them safe for now? I fully expect at least France to become Muslim in due time...

Of the great powers, only Byzantium manages to not be collapsing. That's new. This state of affairs is extremely rare in history...

How many spare heirs do the Abbasids have? If their dynasty dies out, the Middle East might experience an outright succession crisis.

There are around 107 alive Abbasids in year 819. They are far from a dead dynasty.

What about the Carolingians? I mean the rulers of East Francia at least have been dying like flies recently so I feel like their dynasty might be in trouble too...
As of 819...

- 24 alive members in House Karling

- 20 alive members in House Jerome-Karling

- 1 alive member in House Bernhard-Karling

- Finally, 54 people "possess" the Carolingian Bloodline.

"On 10 October 819, a decisive battle between the Khazars and the Byzantines took place at Pompeiopolis. The roughly 9,000 invaders were led by Khagan Otemis the Bane of Galicia-Volhynia himself whereas the defenders were led by Basileus Ioustinianos III the Just and numbered around 5,000. In the chaos of the battlefield, the basileus was separated from his guards and found himself engaging in a duel with a Khazar warrior named Yabghu Yabbhumakh. It said that the basileus initially had the upper hand as he managed to break his opponent's wrist. However, Yabghu was still a better duelist despite his injuries and he managed to slay the basileus. Doge Gregoras the Quarreller of Amalfi, who saw the basileus fall to his death, took command of the Byzantine forces and ordered them to retreat. While he himself would be taken as a prisoner of Khagan Otemis in the aftermath of the battle, a large number of Byzantine soldiers escaped the battlefield alive thanks to the doge's efforts. The Khazar side suffered only around 300 losses whereas over 2,000 men in the Byzantine army had perished during the battle. Andreas the Just of Sarantapechos dynasty, the brother-in-law of Ioustinianos III the Just and a man who had also been present at the battle, was later elected by the Byzantine nobles as their new basileus."

Well, the Khazar war seems to have been going well, but this changes things. I wonder when it will end. Also, why hasn't anyone else tried to take advantage of Byzantium's distraction yet?

East Francia is now Germany. I wonder if any of the seceding states could be convinced to rejoin.

I'm also shocked that a religious revolt was able to earn a few victories. How's Catholicism as a whole doing?

As of year 820, Catholicism is the largest religion on map with 331 provinces. They do have just 24 Moral Authority though.

Holy shit the Khazars actually managed to subjugate the Byzantines (to a degree). Otemis might just be my favourite character so far.
He's been a favorite of mine as well as far as characters in this AAR go so far. Bonus points that he, as a member of the Plaguebringers, has a cat familiar.

The Abbasids are being invaded by the Turks, but these don't appear to be as successful as our timeline's Seljuks - yet.

I can't believe that Byzantium agreed to pay tribute to the Khazars - there is historical precedent. I wonder when they will cut off the tributes? When this khan dies, treating him like Attila the Hun? After Khazaria challenges too many other states?
