The 1916 Olympic Games​

The 1916 Games of the VI Olympiad sparked a great interest amongst the nations, and its organizer, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) received a record number of bids. In a closed voting, Spain’s capital, Madrid, was chosen over other candidates like San Francisco or Melbourne. Even though there was extensive fighting in the Continent, the IOC seemed reluctant into locating the games outside of Europe.

The news were met with celebrations across Spain; received as a sign of normalcy for a troubled nation and as a sign of the country’s return to the global spotlight. Soon the preparations for the game began. On the banks of the Manzanares River, north of the Royal Palace, the construction of an Olympic Compound began; hosting most of the sport venues and the accommodation for the athletes.

The war in Europe found its way into the Games. The Civil war in France caused the dissolution of the local committee, and the President of the IOC, Baron de Coubertin, himself exiled to Switzerland, refused to acknowledge the French Commune. As a result, the few Frenchmen that competed did so under the IOC’s flag. Also, Italians and Bohemians refused to share the accommodations with the Germans, so they settled outside of the Olympic Villa, as it became known. A noticeable police presence was placed as a precaution in order to prevent incidents between the few visitors from the belligerent states.

During May and June the competitions took place, with the following results:

At the end of the Games, Spain was praised for being able to separate the event from the general atmosphere of war in Europe. The villas and stadiums built were left for the general use of Madrilenians and Spaniards; the new borough of Moncloa became the favorite for the city’s elite and a wave of urban growth was sparked throughout Madrid.

The Russian Empire congratulates her athletes in bringing back to the Motherland 2 gold medals, putting us 4th in the ranking. Russia also thanks the Kingdom of Spain for being the host for such wonderful games, and we are happy to know this improved the economy of Spain significantly.

Regarding other international matters, the Russian Empire has yet to hear the German answer for our call for a cease-fire and to accept plebiscites. Further bloodshed will only bring pain to all the nations involved in the conflict. We can all learn from Turkey, Greece and Armenia, that solved their conflicts via diplomatics way when they were at the brink of war.

The German Empire congratulates it's athletes on their excellent performances during the Madrid Olympics. We congratulate the good Spanish for their conduct in hosting the Games and look forward to future sporting events in Spain. The Empire would have done better had more athletes been available to compete. Many of these prospective athletes have answered the call of the Kaiser and have come to serve and defend all Germans and eliminate the scourge of Communism.

To the Russians, we will not accept plebiscites. Plebiscites simply do not work for deciding the futures of whole peoples and nations or restoring peace. They have failed at preventing violence in the places where they are held time and time again. Following the plebiscite in the Ukraine, which had the silly caveat of having to reach of supermajority of 65% for Ukrainian independence. 64.9% of the population voted for independence. The failure of the Ukraine to secure independence led to three years of violence and death in that land as you suppressed the ensuing nationalist revolt. Even now in Bosnia-Croatia, the Serbian minority has rejected the legal plebiscite there held by the majority Croats and Bosnians. Their agitation has given the Serbian government a excuse to invade Bosnia-Croatia and "restore" order.

Do you Russians seriously believe that the cruel and sadistic Italian regime would accept the Südtirol voting to stay with Germany? Of course they won't. They will declare the plebiscite fraudulent and attack. We must drive them back and protect the people in the German lands they hold, Gott above only knows what atrocities they are comitting in areas they have occupied as we speak.

In regard to the Communist Scourge, we fight to eliminate the stain of Communism from Europe, this is a stain that has afflicted the Russian nation, much has it has afflicted Germany. We must cleanse Europe of the Communist disease. We fight to ensure the peace for future generations.

Finally, we offer the Bohemians a final offer of peace, lay down your arms and allow the German Army to enter Prague peacefully. Your positions are untenable due to the loss of the hills and mountains. Any further death and destruction can be avoided if you surrender, if not, then so be it.

Statement of the Bohemian Princess concerning the Olympic Games of May 1916​

My beloved people, friends of the Bohemia-Moravia,

sadly these days the Germans mock us. Since they already plundered or capital and destroy our homes and country it would be a sign of humaneness to not make fun off those they violently opress. As we have evacuated the city and now go on to fight these unhuman beasts in human disguise we must see this as another sign of the evilness of these viscious agressors which fell over Bohemia without any need.

Sadly too this war prevented us to send our glorious athletes to fight peacefully together with other free nations in Madrid in the Olympic Games. Nontheless I like to congratulate all competitors and winners. I bow to the Spanish nation for successfully hosting this event.

Do not despair, my brave people. We will not give up against the terrors of the night, the German threat which tries to extinguish the light of freedom, of justice and of Truce. Bohemia-Moravia will fight on until the threat left our homes, our lives, our country. We will fight to one day be able to compete in another Olympic Games for the glory of us all.

In the hour of darkness, we must endeavour to enjoy the moments of light. Her Majesty's Government is most gracious to our delegation for their masterful performance at the Games of the VI Olympiad, placing third for the first time in our history. Considering that we fielded a smaller delegation than our competitors, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the United States of America, this achievement is all the finer. But success is not ours alone: the Kingdom of Spain not only hosted this event, but performed ably in its exhibitions. Let all nations take heed: only in peace can prosperity be assured.

It brings great joy to the British people at our showing at this year's Olympics. Our bringing home of four gold medals and coming in second for overall medal count shows to the world that the British people are still one of the best. We must echo the words of the Dutch, for only in peace can such success be seen, as the British people have, alongside the American people, observed a long period of peace most recently. His Majesty congratulates every player for their performance, even though of other competeing powers.

In other news, after reading the full document of the Armenian Constitution, His Majesty's Government has decided to fully recognize the Republic of Armenia as a sovereign nation, and hereby guarentees its idependence from foreign agression. Future cooperation through both trade and diplomatic means are looked forward to, and shall be put into talk with Armenian Representatives at the earliest convenience for both our nations.

This has been a message from His Majesty's Government.

The United States of America​

The Olympic Games serve to remind of the higher aspirations of humanity, that man is defined solely by his abilities and not on any other factor. That the United States of America received the most medals in a this Olympics is both a testament of our nation's strength and of the diversity of talent possessed by our nation's people. America would also like to thank the Kingdom of Spain for its service in hosting this most recent Olympiad. Furthermore, though it is regrettable that another games is masked by the shadow of war, it is hoped that these games serve as a reminder of the peace and prosperity that exist outside of war.

The 1916 United States Presidential Election​

The 1916 Presidential Election was marked by many things. Mostly it revolved around two central issues, former President Theodore Roosevelt, and African Colonies. It was these issues that the candidates wrote many journalistic pieces about, as the nominees quickly fell into place, one prominent one, newly-elected Senator Warren G. Harding of the State of Ohio, began to move away from his slightly Progressive tones, towards a more hard-line Conservative Republican tone in his speeches and his pieces. He was considered a lock for the Republican nomination, and he strongly advocated for a continuation of the policies of President Morgan, hoping to run on the Stability and General Growth as a whole, giving the population an option of "Sticking with the 'Norm".

The bad news, however, for Senator Harding was that the United States was boiling over underneath, with the rhetoric of the Democrats and the Progressives, dislike for the Republicans and their policies ran at an all time high. The Republican National Committee was full bent into ignoring most of this as drivel and nothing to be cared about, and plowed full ahead with their praise of President Roosevelt, President Morgan, and Senator Harding.

The American People, however, demanded that the tone be changed. Hearing this, a sitting Justice on the Supreme Court, Charles Hughes, announced his resignation, and took the fight straight to the cities and the towns, championing the causes of Progressiveism, and to fight for the working man, and to work for full and equal rights to the the Women of the United States. One of the bigger issues, however, was the recent annexation of vast swaths of Africa.

Although Justice Hughes ignored this issue, it was taken up by another man, the charismatic former Governor of Ohio, James Cox. He demanded that these colonies be released from the ownership of the United States and turned into Independent Countries, as quickly as possible. He promised this as a central issue in his campaign. Clinging on to another discontent, was the Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. No longer did everyone revere him as the Father of the Nation, but rather as this figure who gobbled up problems, and turned America into one of his favourite words. "Bully!"

On the date of the three conventions, many had no clue who would arise as the Vice-Presidential nominees. For the Republicans, Congressman Nicholas Longworth was chosen to help top the Republican ticket, while the Democrats choose the newly elected Governor of New York, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a rising star of the Democratic Party, and who was related to the former President. The real surprise, was that after two ballots, activist Jane Addams was nominated for the Vice-Presidential slot, shocking the United States, and the entire world, that a woman had the possibility of becoming President of the United States.

As the General Election got underway, the candidates fanned out, and crossed the country by rail and road, stumping and trying to drum up votes. Surprisingly, President Theodore Roosevelt, who had returned from his retirement at Sagamore Hill, stumped for Hughes and Addams fervently, almost everywhere he went. The Press had a field day with it, making it seem that Teddy was running once again, and using it to demonize him for it. Much of the press had aligned to become Pro-Democratic, and sang the praises of Cox and Franklin Roosevelt, calling him the "Level-headed" Roosevelt, the "Fair-Minded" Roosevelt, far above the rebellious and pugnacious former President.

As election day got closer, there was no feeling of dread for either side. All of them thought they were confident in victory. After all, it was only eight years ago that President Roosevelt swept the nation in a landslide, and now he was back again, helping the Progressives. They felt they had the upper hand due to their ability to gain the Women vote, and that their ideals were best for the nation. The Republicans felt the norm was the best, and the Democrats were certain they could offer the change the country needed, and get rid of the Imperialist African colonies, which most of the nation despised.

When election day came, and the results started to tick in, one camp seemed to be right. The prevailing issue was indeed the situation in Africa, as every Congressman who campaign against it won, and the final vote was 212 Electoral Votes for Cox and Roosevelt, 146 Votes for Harding and Longworth, and 140 Votes for Hughes and Addams, which came as a surprise, considering they were thought to be strong, but did not perform as well as they thought outside of their powerbase of the Midwest. Cox and Roosevelt were able to sweep the South and the West, and performed strong in the Midwest and the Northeast, giving them a plurality of the electoral votes, and a majority of the popular votes.

Under Constitution, Cox and Roosevelt were declared the President and Vice-President Elect of the United States. The results of the House elections also came in, 205 Democrats, 145 Republicans, and 57 Progressives. It was enough to form a majority and elect their own Speaker, giving the new President a lot of power over the policy of the United States. In his victory speech, he made a solemn pledge to the United States, that he will reverse the Course the United States was set on by President Roosevelt, and that by the end of the year 1918, the United States of America would not own, or exert direct control, over any land on the African continent.

Australia would like to congratulate our athletes on their bronze medal in golf! Though our athletes returned home with just one medal, they did their best and we still came out with a glorious bronze medal. We will celebrate the victory of all our athletes that participated in the great games.

We would also like to thank the Spanish government and the city of Madrid for such a beautiful and well planned out games. Our athletes were treated with the up most respect, and our athletes really enjoyed the great city.

We would also like to congratulate the President-elect James Cox and Vice-President elect Franklin Roosevelt on their election win. The government of Australia wishes you well in the coming years.

Open Letter of the Bohemian Princess to the American people and President-elect Cox​

Dear Mr. President-elect James Cox, people of America,

I like to congratulate you on your recent victory and the American people on another celebration of democracy and freedom. The people of Bohemia-Moravia, myself included, are great admirers of your achievements in the name of freedom, justice and human rights. After the fight for our freedom and peace ends we plan to adopt most of your established rights and freedoms in our young country as well.

While we will not judge other aproachments as illegitimate as we do not have the right to do so the people of Bohemia-Moravia do question the divine right of monarchs. If we ever reach the light again, free from the encroaching darkness of German tyranny, I will be invested by vote and law alone as I am a representative of my people and our country because they are after all the highest legitimate force around here. The American light of democracy and integrity will guide us through this process safely.

I am proud to be a witness of this age where the American people once again takes the torch of freedom to Africa and helps those victims of imperialism to decide their own fates. In this endeavor I offer you our best wishes of luck and any possible help the Czech people might provide the soon-to-be new states in Africa. While the people will be free to choose their path themselves we gladly offer help in matters of state and organization if it is requested. In the end we believe that every people know best themselves how to govern in their territory like the American people have proved already for a long time.

First and foremost, I would like to congratulate our gallant athletes that have done so well in the Olympic Games. These young man who have performed so well in football, polo and equestrian sports are a fine example of the values of determination, sacrifice and rectitude that we wish to base the new Argentina upon.

Many have already said this, but there is no harm in stating it again, only in an atmosphere of peace can society thrive; only in peace such accomplishments like these can be done. The Kingdom of Spain, who has done a fine job hosting the games is a clear testament of what democracy and stability can achieve in short time for the advancement of a Nation. Sadly, this falls upon deaf ears, as Europe continues to engulf itself into battle; over nationalism, ideology and so on. As it is our long standing costume, our shores are open for any good willed man who wishes to come to our soil and practice his arts.

Closer to our borders, there is another conflict going on. Even though we support the actions taken by the United States of Venezuela in their struggle, nonetheless we must make a call upon the Colombian Government to hear reason, step down from office and enable peace to return. It was their actions that brought this conflict upon them, and the sooner they relinquish their feeble dreams of dominance, the lesser the casualties for both sides.

Finally, I would like to salute the President-elect of the United States, Mr. Cox. Even though my own term in office is soon to come to an end as well, I extend my best wishes to him and his people and hope that He and My Successor can work towards a better Continent, while respecting the free will of the peoples, which is the only will that matters.

Europe​

Churchill, as First Lord of the Admiralty, was a proponent of local Imperial defense, so much so that he pushed forth the Naval Autonomy Bill in 1916, where the semi-independent dominions, as well as the Raj, would receive British ships and officers. The programme was designed to better the versatility of the various overseas areas of the Empire, and to ensure that they could adequately defend themselves in case of the severance of communication with London. The plan called for many new ships to be built, and sent over to the colonies, and Parliament passed the bill – by the skin of its teeth – with a 2 vote margin. British shipyards that year, however, were already laid up with massive merchant shipping orders, partially finished tankers and massive freighters lay in drydock awaiting completion. The large merchant marine of Great Britain was modernizing and expanding, conversion to oil burning turbines and the creation of ships with even larger tonnage meant that the UK’s dockyards could not accept the Navy’s bill until the next year, lest they wanted to sacrifice a huge portion of Britain’s civilian fleet.Costs were expected to be massive for this new programme, and the long running times could be crippling to its implementation

Her Majesty’s Army and home office began to expand intelligence operations, with a new division, Military Intelligence: 6, or MI6. It would be charged with undertaking defenses against foreign threats to British interests, though its actions would be secret, shielded from most within the government and abroad.

The French revolutionary government put their meagre international resources to good use in 1916, beginning a grassroots campaign to spread the word about the grand socialist experiment in France. Particular attention was given to downtrodden areas around the world from which impressionable young men could be drawn into France; Ireland, Spain, the southern United States and even China and Indochina were all focused upon. The comprehensive success of the initiative shocked many leaders world-wide, with reverse-immigration from the United States as a particularly strange occurrence: many poor black men set off for France in search of a better life. Irish communists as well traveled to France, and hundreds of thousands of idealists, embittered poor and even adventurers flooded Red ports. French citizenship would be granted to anyone who served in the Red Army or those who contributed otherwise to the war effort.

The Red Army also attempted to modernize their doctrine and become a more effective fighting force. Higher priority was given to individual soldiers, and emphasis was given as to their integral nature inside of a unit. The resultant morale boost was astonishing, as Red Army forces were fighting with an ideology that burned strong in their hearts and alongside good comrades for whom they would lay down their lives. Doctrinal advances were made on the strategic level: maneuver and quick actions were focused upon by the Red leadership, something that the antiquated White armies were not able to mimic.

The communist French government’s attempts at consolidating a hold on the navy failed spectacularly, as sailors began mutinying against anyone who even looked to have authority over them. Enlisted sailors strung up their officers and dumped them into harbours, and then proceeded to drink themselves into oblivion. Any attempt at restoring order to the French navy was met by 10 inch shells fired from the ships’ main guns at the agent of said restoration. The French navy was not going anywhere soon. Across the nation, the sailors were not willing to fight for anyone but themselves, and soon began killing anyone suspected of belonging to either side in the civil war. Many officers managed to escape the wrath of their sailors, but they too would not fight for any side without their beloved ships underneath them. As such, the remaining naval officers fled to Spain and North Africa, perceived safe havens from terror both red and white.

The French Red Army was able to suppress Royalist resistance in all areas of metropolitan France, save the island of Corsica. The Royalists emigrated en masse abroad, mainly to French Algeria, where Charles XII set up a government in exile and refused to recognise Communist sovereignty. The Reds were left with a war-torn country, though again the worst of the fighting seemed to be concentrated in and around Paris, while the rest of the nation was largely spared the horrors of war. In the east, the Germans appeared to be massing for another attack, though nothing was certain in these times for the French.

Dutch trade barriers were lowered in 1916, in order to bring in foreign investment. The United French Communes​

Following the restoration of order to mainland France and the wholesale acceptance by the French people of their new revolutionary government, the United Communes of France hereby declare victory over the reactionary forces that once plagued France with their ineptitude and criminal stupidity. We call upon all nations, both within Europe and beyond, to acknowledge the United Communes as the legitimate government of France and the sole representative of the French people.

Though the reactionary rebels remain at large in France's colonies, the United Communes must turn its attention away from that outlaw gang and instead focus on a threat not to just to France, not just to socialism, but to Europe and indeed the entire world: the German Empire. From this moment forward, every single French patriot will be dedicated toward the total destruction of the German military and the end of the Kaiser's campaign of bloody conquest in Eastern Europe.

Therefore, I hereby announce that the United French Communes are fully mobilized, with general operations against Germany to begin immediately. Before I address the issue facing the governments of the European Continent, I shall discuss the goings-on throughout the kingdom this year.

Technological advances in the development and deployment of a new rifle for use in the Royal Army was a resounding success. The soldiers of the Spanish Army are now equipped with modern weapons comparable to the German Mauser and Russian Makharov rifles. This will give our men in uniform the capabilities to fight modernized armies - chiefly, the armies of the warring powers of this Continent - and better enables them to defend our homeland and our sovereignty should it come to it. It is also the express belief of the Royal Army Command and myself that development and funding shall continue towards the creation of a lightweight and powerful engine for use in aircraft, which shall be constructed and delivered to barracks throughout the nation to be used in conjunction with ground troops. Even now, the Spanish Army is fully capable - upon complete and total mobilization - of fighting most European powers in a land war. As the ability to do so means complete safety for the Spanish people and the property of their respective Government, further development into tactics and equipment for the Royal Army shall commence this year, and shall continue until the officers of the Army Command deem our nation fully defensible against a fully-mobilized European entity, such as one of those major nations that are engaged in war upon this very Continent.

Next, the birth of my son and the heir to the throne of this nation, Prince Juan, overjoys me; upon my laying-to-rest after what I hope to be a long and eventful reign, the Prince shall succeed me as Spanish Monarch and leader of this nation.

The massive success that was the VI Olympiad overjoys me, as the attendance of so many nations shows the unity within the human species. The successes of all national teams, particularly the teams of Spain, show that differences can be put aside, even if for just a few weeks, to participate as equals in these sporting events.

Now, in regards to the European War, I relay to the leaders of the warring countries the following: why do you war? Why do you fight? Why are so many young men being sent to die on a dark, cold, and dirty battlefield, fearing for their lives that it may be taken by an equally-fearful man on the other side? Stop this fighting. It is useless. It will only lead to the deaths of so many more good men, the orphaning of so many children, the widowing of so many wives, and the mourning of millions the world over.

Should any of you heed my words and see the sense laid within, I offer the capital of this nation, Madrid, as a place to host a peace conference with the objective of ending this war that has already cost so many lives. I seek to see the nations in this war all equally given their demands without great concessions on the part of others; irregardless of the outcome of the proposed conference, peace will be restored, and it is the express duty of myself, and all other rulers of the nations on this Continent and this Earth, that peace be maintained, whatever the cost. Let us not fight - let us go forward together to peace.

However, this goes without saying: should the sovereignty and independence of the Kingdom of Spain and her respective territories and colonies be violated or threatened in any way by any foreign power or nation, including those currently engaged in the fighting among the major powers of Europe, actions will be taken - primarily by the Spanish Armed Forces - to ensure that not only this does not happen again, but that Spanish sovereignty is maintained.

There is peace in our time!

I hope that this war on the continent will end swiftly and with minimum loss of life. I hope all parties take up the gracious King of Spain's offer and go to Madrid. I congradulate the Armenian state on there success at becoming a true and free modern country, and wish that many years of peace continue in the future.

People of Palestine-Lebanon,

We are a new nation onto the world stage to set out our own achievements. We will prosper in our own right and set a place for ourselves in the world as other nations in the world have. Firstly we will build a fledgling economy my people that is industrialized and modern as nations in the west. We will prosper like no other nations have in the world before us. Our economy will be one to ensure every person will be able to buy most things they want in their lifetime. Our army and navy will also become advanced and modern marvels of our time.

I guarantee we will prosper in the coming years as other nations in the world have. We will build and expand our nation internally into something more efficient than ever.
