Hello there, thanks for your report. Please ensure that you have no mods installed (if you do, disable them and try running the game) if the issues persists. Please try a fresh install including removing all existing files from the install directory.

Please let me know the results of these steps :)

FYI, I have the same problem.

Game freezes at 30% if I load while I have even one mod active turned on (like ones that provide new emblems, for instance). I can get it running only if I turn off every single mod.

Game Version 2.8.

Expansions
Synthetic Dawn, Utopia, Leviathans Story Pack, Apocalypse, Megacorp, Distant Stars, Ancient Relics, Lithoids, Federations

Do you have mods enabled?
Yes. I normally play with over 50 mods running--mostly cosmetic ones for extra emblems and races, but sometimes ones like Guilli's various mods, or Plentiful Traditions. In this case, I can't seem to get the game running at all unless every single mod is turned off at start.

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
Loading screen freezes at 30%. Using older versions work. Turning off all mods lets it work.

Steps to reproduce the issue.
Start the game and attempt to run with any mod enabled. Doesn't seem to matter which mod it is.

System: MacOS 10.14. Hardware: 27-inch iMac with Retia 5K display, 3.7 GHz 6-core 9th-generatio Intel Core i5 processor.
32 GB of DDR4 memory, Radeon Pro 580X.

I'm having the same issue. I reinstalled. Unsubscribed from expired mods as well as turned them all off. Followed fix advice I found from a year ago, and now it won't even get to the % counter.

Can't constantly hear how modders are better than Paradox devs if nobody can play with mods...

Okay but seriously, it's incredibly annoying that the game's broken one of the best parts of it.

I've also heard that origins and civics mods can also break the game.

Launcher 2020.14, for me it's the live version (2.8.0).

Can you recreate this issue on the stellaris_test branch?

Also do you use any of these mods?

Edit: Moar Icons, Cybrxkhan's Assorted Namelist; Alien Suns, or Multi-colored Space Peoples.

People are having this problem with my mod too. Got some useful input from one of them:

So, like others I believed that the game was frozen on the loading screen, but mine does successfully launch after 5-10 minutes even after saying the game is not responding. My error log reference several mods having "Incorrect MOD descriptor: "mod/ugc_(Mod#)" including this one. I don't get this warning from the launcher. I can also confirm that the mod does not work once in game.

My descriptor.mod (and yeah, I haven't updated to 2.8 since people are complaining it does not work)
Code:
name="Dynamic Difficulty - Ultimate Customization"
archive="custom_difficulty.zip"
dependencies={
        "Dynamic Difficulty : More Modifiers"
}
tags={
        "Balance"
}

So. With my atrociously huge modlist, turning off Cybrxkhan's (which is the only one of that group) actually makes the problem worse. I don't even get to the loading screen!
With just Cybrxkhan's on, the game loads normally.

I also have a fairly substantive modlist (though mostly just cosmetic stuff, e.g. portraits and such). I actually don't use any of the aforementioned mods, but the game refuses to load past the initial STELLARIS splash screen.

So I don't know what you guys over at PDX have done with the way you load mods, but it seems to be completely broken atm. I really hope this gets top priority for a hotfix, because right now the game is basically unplayable for me (and judging by the subreddit, not just for me but for many others as well).

I've tried going back to 2.7.2 (which just produces a regular crash now that some mods have updated to 2.8), but 2.8 and 2.8.1 (the test branch) both refuse to load.

As far as I can gather, it's not actually something a modder can fix, as it seems not everyone is affected by this issue.

Are you mac or PC? What OS?

Are you mac or PC? What OS?
I'm on a PC, Windows 10 Home 64-bit. Intel i7 4790k, 16.0 GB RAM, Nvidia GTX 1070.

Launcher version is 2020.14, checksum for both 2.8 and 2.8.1 matches what it should be according to the forum post (a756 and 38d7). I've tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the game which did not resolve the issue.

I've noticed in the logfiles that they seem to stop at a certain point. error.log reads as follows:
Code:
[03:31:58][dlc.cpp:344]: Invalid supported_version in  file: mod/ugc_1096271542.mod line: 9

[03:31:58][dlc.cpp:344]: Invalid supported_version in  file: mod/ugc_1769029620.mod line: 7

system.log does not seem to get much further:

[03:31:58][graphicssettings.cpp:210]: Anisotropic filtering set to: 0

Some people on reddit are speculating that the issue is the number of mods, rather than a specific mod. I haven't been able to verify this though, so take it with a grain of salt as others on reddit appear to have issues even with a random single mod.

EDIT: Should mention that this happens both when using the "-dx11" flag and without it.

Latest error.log occurs upon removal of SpeedDial and associated Dynamic Mod Menu patch and replacement with standard UI Overhaul Patch. In this case, it's back to the old 'freeze on startup with the initial screen you see prior to loading screens' thing.

I have the same issue, but while I googled for and found this thread and read through it, I had the supposedly crashed at 30% game running in the background on the other screen when it suddenly continued.
So the issue isn't necessarily a crash, but ludicrous loading times. My game was on 30% for around 7 or 8 minutes, with the Windows Taskmanager complaining about it no longer reacting. And if you click anywhere on the stuck laoding screen, it crashes for good.

Edit: I now tried to launch my game with the full mod-setup and just letting it load for however long it takes and after freezing at 30% it continued to load 18 mintues later.
That is 18 mintues on the 30% with some additional time for the other 99%.
This is rather ridiculous.

I'm having the same issue, though I do have 79 mods.
I don't know if leaving the game load on for long enough might work, I left it for an hour and when I came back it was still at 30%.

Had the same Problem, try merging your mods. Personally i'm using irony mod manager for that. Unmerged it took over an hour to get over the dreadful 30% marker (timed it twice, both times around 65 minutes) and after merging everything into one big mod it takes less then 30 seconds...

Thank you, it saved me so much trouble. Loads the game in a breeze.
