((Private - Government in Exile))

I thank the Marquess di Solemnis for his trust in me and my appointment as the Minister of Finance of the Legitimate Italy. I shall endeavour to serve my duties with distinction and honour.

For now, there is work to be done. The Socialists have fallen, and we must pick up the pieces.

((Private - Government in Exile))
I will gladly take the mantle of Minister of Commerce, and I hope that I can reverse the economic damage brought on by the communist regime.

((Well, this certainly has turned into a real roller coaster. I'm going to play through the anarchy now, but it will only be 3 years instead of the previous 5. After that, a random government will be installed in power [again...]))

((Good luck. PM me if you need anything regrading the master lists))

((Secret to all but Contra))
The train steamed along in the Swiss countryside. It was a small train, a train that carried only about 100 people or so. What was on the train however were two men, two men on a quest to find someone who went missing. These men were Federico Fabron D'Ambrosio and dom Contravarius. The two men sat across from each other, with Contravarius drinking straight out of a bottle of vodka.

"Bern is our destination. During the last anarchy, this is where Victor Emmanuel III went to hide. Perhaps when he came back, he left his wife and son here. This would be a good place to start." said Federico.

Dom Contravarius looked at the map, and silently stared at Federico, almost looking bored and tired, and maybe partially drunk.

"Okay. If he is not in Bern our next destination would be Montenegro, the home of the Queen. If the Queen survived the communist purge, she would be there with her son. Montenegro is a peaceful location to be, but we would have to traverse Austrian territory." said Federico.

Dom Contravarius still silently stared at Federico, emotionless.

"Our third option would be Spain. Spain has been ruled by the Savoy family for the past few decades. It would be friendly to other members of the Savoy family, and would welcome them if the Queen fled their with her son."

Dom Contravarius drank more of his vodka, staring at the map.

"Last, if those options do not work out, we go to Germany. There are many loyal supporters of the monarchy in Germany, and that is the location of the Government in Exile. The Queen could possible have gone there to seek help for her son. If he is not there, then we would have no other lead to finding the King and assume he either fled the continent entirely, or is in a country out of our reach." said Federico.

Dom Contravarius sat, looking at the map, then up to Federico, then down to the map, without saying a word.

"This is going to be an interesting journey..." thought Federico

Two men are sitting in silence, one of them with red hair and a carefully curved moustache, is reading a Swiss newspaper, the other one is gazing out the coupé window where pictures of factories and distant mountaintops are flying by.

-People out here, it's like they don't even know the outside world exists. Might as well be living on the fucking Moon. There's all kinds of ghettos in the world, it's all one ghetto, giant gutter in outer space.

-My dear Gabriel, can I ask you something? You're a baptized as a Roman Catholic, yes?

-Yes. Not that it means much, nowadays.

-Well, then what do you got the cross for in that apartment you had in München?

-It’s a form of meditation.

-How's that?

-I contemplate the moment in the garden, the idea of allowing your own crucifixion.

-...So what do you believe in?

-I believe that people shouldn't talk about this in train coupés.

-Hold on, hold on, my dear friend...

He coughs and then continues.

-...The whole week we have been together, I’ve managed to get nothing from you. Do me a courtesy, okay? I'm not trying to convert you.

-Look. I consider myself a realist, but in philosophical terms, I'm what's called a pessimist.

-Well, what does that mean?

-Means I'm bad at parties.

-Heh. Let me tell you, my friend, You aren't great outside of parties either.

-I think human consciousness was a tragic misstep in evolution. We became too self-aware. Nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself. We are creatures that should not exist by natural law.

The red-haired gentleman coughs again, this time less comfortably. His companion continues:

-We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, this accretion of sensory experience and feeling, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody when, in fact, everybody's nobody.

-I wouldn't go around telling people about it if I was you. People around here don't think that way. I don't think anybody thinks that way.

-I think the honorable thing for our species to do is to deny ourselves this world, stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction, one last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal.

A few uncomfortable moments of silence.

-So what's the point of getting out bed in the morning?

- I tell myself I bear witness, but the real answer is that I obviously lack the constitution for suicide.

-My luck, I picked today to get to know you. The whole week, I don't hear a word from you, and...

-You asked.

-Yeah. And now I'm begging you to shut up.

Another moment of silence as the train flies past the heavily industrialized outskirts of Bern.

-I get a bad taste in my mouth out here. Aluminum, ash. It’s like you can smell the psychosphere.

-Gabriel, I think that's just clean mountain air. Also, I just got an idea. Let's make the coupé a place of réflexion silencieuse from now on.

Catarina decides to join Constantino's militia for the good of the proletariat.

1908-1910: The Second Anarchy

By early 1910, with even labor movements growing dissatisfied with communist governance and opposition growing, a Chartist movement presented the Communist government with an ultimatum: more political rights or revolution. The politburo did not reply, not that it was relevant. They had already lost control of the country. Anarchist and republican militias were already forming in the streets and clashing with communists; White Forces were mustering in the north, and mass civil violence had broken out in Egypt. The Communists could make any promises they liked. Outside their strongholds of Rome and Firenze, they had no authority.

While other nations probably would have loved to take advantage of the Italian anarchy, they were too busy fighting amongst themselves to do much. A new war would break out between Germany and Austria-Hungary in 1908 (Austria-Hungary itself battling a communist rebellion in its eastern territories). France would back Austria-Hungary but Germany would promptly flatten both countries. Further wars would break out between Spain and France over colonial territories and between Serbia and Austria over what Serbia considered core parts of its patrimony. This left little time for anyone to pay attention to Italy, at least for a while.

Italy quickly descended into anarchy, with the large "White Divisions" occupying much of the north and hundreds of thousands of rebels quickly swarming the countryside. By March of 1909, the Communist government would be reduced to its two urban enclaves, garrisoned by large but terrified and poorly supplied Red Guard units.

International intervention would come from the most unlikely place imaginable: the Swiss. The Swiss, fearing spillover into their own lands and heavily prodded by the German foreign office, dispatched 50,000 soldiers into Piedmonte starting in May of 1909. They would briefly secure Aosta and Novara and parts of Lombardia along their border before being forced back by sheer numbers. When it became obvious that Swiss intervention was insufficient, Germany sent an army into Piemonte to reinforce them in August. However, the weight of the hundreds of thousands of clashing rebel forces inflicted significant casualties on the foreign armies, and Germany and Switzerland would both hastily withdraw by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, after several attacks on Rome, Anarchist militias would eject the Red Guards from Rome on July 28th, 1909. The politburo fled the city the same day, while the rejoicing anarchists would declare the Citizen's Republic of Italy the next month. Their Citizen's Republic would prove short lived. While they conspired to put notable businessmen in charge of what little central authority they planned there to be, they were themselves overcome by Jacobin militias in early 1910. Republican guardsmen would seize Rome and declare the Republic of Italy on February 1910.

Meanwhile, in the national north, the Government in Exile under the Marquess of Solemnis would decide that their time had finally come and (with significant support from foreign powers, probably including Germany and Austria-Hungary) mounted an expedition into Italy. Rallying expat supporters and sympathetic white guard commanders, the new "White Army" entered Italy nearly Trent in early 1910, then began a march south down the railway line, through Verona, Ferra, Bologna, Ravenna, and Ancona. The White Guards would seize Naples, then loop back up towards Rome, while other sympathetics seized power throughout the country.

Amat's march coincided with the election of new socialist government in Rome in August of 1910. This gave Amat's army the mandate it needed. Obviously, no further leftist rule could be entertained in Italy. After a bloody struggle, the White Army seized Rome in late 1910, installing Amat and his Government-in-Exile as the new government of Italy.

Amat was named Lord Regent (which most read as dictator) of a new Kingdom of Italy on January 1st, 1911, ending the anarchy. However, with the population of Italy still furious, demanding reforms, and not particularly enthusiastic to hear there was a new autocrat in charge, it seemed likely he would have to make political concessions or risk not being in power for very long.

Player Actions Needed:

Ironically, the random government placed into power turned out to be Marschalk's. (The man has the devil's luck.) The government type is technically Presidential Dictatorship, so the monarchy presumably remains mere figureheads for the dictator. He can now appoint his Council and whatnot.

EDIT: Oh, I should also mention that fascism fired. So yeah, that's happening.

Since Catarina somehow managed to survive the bourgeois counterrevolution, she decided to return to her former comrades in Paris for there was more socializing to do elsewhere.

((Good grief...

The people who ruled Italy in real life look competent when compared to this. o_O
And Fascism isn't even here yet! ... Oh wait, it actually is here.))

Adriano looked confused as he read his newspaper, the communist government imploded and now the hard right was back... He sat their dumb founded as the socialist left had lead the country to another anarchy, making it two anarchies out of two governments formed. A pretty impressive record by any standard.

Uncertain what to expect on this new hard right government, he decided he would continue his operations.

((I'm still agitating just to be clear.))

From Paris, Catarina agitates against everything Amat holds dear.

Rosa Bonaretti and her family entered Nizza, her ancestral home, in triumph. Her carriage was mobbed by supporters as it travelled down the streets of the city. Citizens cheered, chanting, "Viva Bonaretti!" and "Viva Witteslbac" as they threw rose petals at the carriage. Rosa and Prince Rupprecht briefly appeared at Piazza Giacomo Bonaretti where she made a brief address. Then, to the delight of the crowds, thirty communists were hanged.

The duchess covered her daughters' eyes. She wasn't sure if she was doing it to protect them from the grizzly sight or to prevent them from seeing her smile.

The Marquess of Soleminis, austere and strict, stands before his advisors and supporters, inside one of the halls of the Royal Palace

Compatriots!

Today we may celebrate victory - but understand that hard work awaits us. For many years now the people of Italia have been subjected to manifold hardships. They were killed, harassed, robbed, raped, deprived of their most basic rights. When we smell incense during a triumphant mass today, we should also remember of an another smell - a smell of the burned villages, destroyed by the radical militias. Our mission is to heal the wounded body of Italy, to return peace and order to its flourishing lands. From now one, our hearts should beat only for Italy and Italians, we should forget personal ambitions, giving all our efforts to the service to the King and the People.

During all my life I have been but a loyal servant of the House of Savoy and Italian Nation - and therefore, while heading the government-in-exile, I did not expect the Italian people to hand me the grave duties of the Regency. However, I do accept them, for understand that it is not a prize, but a burden - for it means leading the country that is now in flames, bringing back the House of Savoy to their God-given throne and restore their position tarnished by the past years, pacify the discontent and keep Italy as a great state it should be.

You all know me for a long time and seen my service to the Crown and Nation - and I do hope that you know that I always stayed true to my principles, always acted with honor and integrity. Loyalty to the Crown and restoration of its natural rights, respect towards ordinary people, return to the rule of law, unification and pacification of our society, stern opposition to socialist, republican and anarchist radicalism - this is what you can expect from me. I hope that, with the assistance of my good advisors and allies, I would be able to build the new Italian Kingdom, patriotic, strong and harmonious.

To assist myself, in the capacity of the Regency, I would, in addition to my cabinet, name a Crown Council.

Long live the King! Long live Italia!

- Amedeo Cesare Amat. Marchese di Soleminis, Acting Lord Regent and Prime Minister of Italy

Lucrezia sits back in her chair

"HH...How?" She stood dumbfounded
"The details still aren't clear, but one thing is known for certain: The People's republic is no more." Antoine replied solemnly
"..." there was silence for a good few minutes.
"The fight is not over, as long as blood pumps through my body, the fight is not over."
"Lucie, what would you have us do?"
Lucrezia stood up and said one word: "Resist."
She hears some kind of procession outside "Oh bollocks, those blasted Bonarettis are back"
La Dame de Nica and her compadres then proceeded to launch all the eggs they had at them.

L'Unione dei consigli operai
L'Union des conseils ouvriers
The Union of Workers' Councils
Founded during and shortly after the Anarchy, The UCO was an anarcho-communist organisation founded by the short-lived Nizza Consiglio as some attempt to maintain order in the chaos. It tried to acquire as many armaments as it could during the anarchy from both the rebel organisations and the retreating Switzer-Deutsch forces. While it is now underground as of the White revolution (the third revolution in Rome in less than a year), it is still attempting to operate in a more covert role: organising meetings, attempting to purchase factories then run them through anarcho-syndicalist methods & perhaps the odd act of guerrilla warfare. Whether it would now survive and its leader; La Dame De Nizzia, remain a freewoman would remain to be seen. Its main operating theaters are in the cities of Nizzia, Genoa and the countryside in between.
((As a Demagogue, I am [re]founding a militia in the aforementioned regions. It is ofc anti-gov following socialist & anarchist ideologies.))
