GNW41-08-22N-min.jpeg

The Wehrmacht is taking it's sweet time deploying their new units... For some reason, the only thing the new reinforcements seem to be doing is pushing north, this seems somewhat pointless as the war will be decided in Oslo, and Narvik, with it's port and Air Base is very far away... more time is being wasted by Germany with the capture of Fongen, Meråker, and Hell.

GNW41-08-22S-min.jpeg

The Belgians retreated to their ships after 12 days of pointless battle, leaving behind more than 1.200 men on the beaches of Krisitansand.
Meanwhile, the Norwegian army has started pushing to the West again, taking Honefoss. This means that Oslo is no longer on the front line.
British North Africa Front
United Kingdom (Surrender Progress / NU): 5,5 / 77,6 (-0,1)
Italy (Surrender Progress / NU): 0,00 / 79,4
BNAF41-08-22-min.jpeg

Once the British Armoured Division broke trough the hastily scrambled Italian defences and crossed the Nile in force backed by a lot of Air Support, Italian resistance melted away like a block of ice in the desert. The Tanks did what tanks are supposed to do and rushed to the Mediterranean coast, at El Hammâm, west of El Iskandarîya, effectively encircling 2 Italian binary Militia Divisions that are holding the city. All the while, a second Infantry attack on the city had started, and soon the tanks were approaching the city from the West, they have yet to engage the enemy, but it seems that El Iskandarîya will return into British hands shortly, along with some POWs.
Further south, no serious resistance was met, and it's essentially a Royal Marines Division and an Infantry Division clearing previously Italian occupied, but now deserted, provinces of remaining mines and boobytraps as well as hanging the Union Jacks back where they belong.

Italy (Surrender Progress / NU): 0,00 / 79,4
FNAF41-08-22-min.jpeg

After more than a week of valiant fighting with little more than fists, Bayonets, knives, and a few Molotov cocktails, the French Garrison of Casablanca broke. As the first Italian infantrymen arrived near the Port facilities, the French Navy steamed out of the port, most ships still had some damage, but they left the port slightly better off than they had arrived months earlier.
Instead of relocating to Beirut as the transport fleet had done, they are all moving to Tamanar, the last remaining Port in French Morocco, and the last possible avenue, the Armée de L'Afrique could escape through.

Research:
More Red Army Theorists have come forward with improved tactical instructions for the performance of Elastic Defence (Level 4) tactics This tactic utilises the mobility of Self-Propelled Support Regiments to further integrate highly mobile fire support into the complex movement patterns of mobile units during Tactical Withdrawals, Elastic Defence and Backhand Blows.
The clever tacticians have now changed track and they are looking at the offensive aspect of Armoured Warfare, with what some call Blitzkrieg (Level 3) tactics. The point of their research will be to better organise all armoured unit types for hard and fast 'Blitz' strikes.

Seems like the Italians have had their backs broken in North Africa...if each of those pockets holds even one division, that is still an insurmountable loss for the Italians!

With a name like that I thought he could come from Wales.:) But, I suppose Henry VII paved the way.
He sure did, didn't he.

Seems like the Italians have had their backs broken in North Africa...if each of those pockets holds even one division, that is still an insurmountable loss for the Italians!
Taking into account the order in which the provinces were cleared and the (relatively) slow pace at which they were cleared, I'd say that there is a very low chance of having any Divisions caught in those southern pockets...The Alexandria Area was sealed off very quickly through, probably, a rapid armoured thrust to the coast, so last time I tagged to the UK, there were 2 binary Militia Divisions in the city itself, possibly more units are trapped in the pocket... So, a significant loss.

Lots of new units and hardware, the most relevant of which surely are the half-tracks, first operationally deployed ones in the world I believe! The new mountain troops have my unconditional support as well.

The Italian offensive is now well and truly broken, and their gains melt away as snow under the sun of Spring. Too little too late for the French, but as discussed before, it may bring about the destruction of most Axis units in the theater in due time, a boon unlike any other in this conflict so far. Two thin divisions of militia is hardly a major step forward, but it is still progress. Once El Iskardiya is captured, the RAF will no doubt use it to again unleash a thunderstorm from hell on the fascist invaders.

Good to see the British have learned how to fight. But we just want those not-as-bad-as-the-Fascists imperialists to do enough to keep the Axis distracted but leave the rest of Europe for the Red Army to liberate from the capitalists. ;)

And I hope Hitler enjoys his little surprise of a bunch of KV-122s when he encounters them. If he ever stops faffing around in northern Norway. If that is the greatest extent of his strategic insight, then the SU is safe indeed! :p

The more the Italians dig DEEP into Africa the less of them around to help the Germans when the REAL war starts in Eurasia. The only problem of the UK digging deep into Africa is they will not likely be helping us in Europe. Of course, we may not need their help. We don't want a Allied Invasion of Europe. At least, not one that works.

Indeed. Them both keeping each other occupied in N Africa would be good. And just the threat of a second front, even a few commando raids or a failed larger landing would be fine too. ;)

We're before the British anyway... so there is a good chance those are the first operational ones in the word. Sort-of funny if you remember that the Soviets built very few half-tracks, though they did get a ton of American ones which they often heavily modified...

The Italian offensive is now well and truly broken, and their gains melt away as snow under the sun of Spring. Too little too late for the French, but as discussed before, it may bring about the destruction of most Axis units in the theater in due time, a boon unlike any other in this conflict so far.

Yes, for now the Italians seem broken... they are actively pulling back, which is why they didn't get more units encircled. Let's just hope they don't have the transports to evacuate troops...

Considering the British idea of an amphibious landing is sending Belgians with heavy Artillery to take a beach without landing craft... if they keep up that level of incompetence, the Soviet Union should expect to break the Germans on it's own, and take over all of continental Europe soon afterwards... Of course, there is always a chance that King George VI can convince his friend President Roosevelt to join the Allies...

Two thin divisions of militia is hardly a major step forward, but it is still progress. Once El Iskardiya is captured, the RAF will no doubt use it to again unleash a thunderstorm from hell on the fascist invaders.
That seems very likely.

And I hope Hitler enjoys his little surprise of a bunch of KV-122s when he encounters them. If he ever stops faffing around in northern Norway. If that is the greatest extent of his strategic insight, then the SU is safe indeed! :p
Maybe we'll wrap a bow around the first 122mm HEAT round fired in anger... to signify just how much of a thoughtful present the KV-122s really are supposed to be...

German troops continue their unopposed push North, with their capture of Namsos, and Snåsa, they are 120km north of Trondheim, and a whopping 375km from Narvik.
GNW41-09-01S-min.jpeg

Besides wasting time up north, the Wehrmacht has started a very limited push towards the south, with their capture of Fåberg. Meanwhile, the Norwegians continue to slowly push the front lines away from Oslo, by retaking Kongsberg.

A new unit, fresh from East Africa was dropped off in Bûr Sa'îd by the Royal Navy, the binary Inf-Mil unit should be perfect to hold a port or clean-up duties, freeing up other units for offensive operations. It seems to be moving to Garrison the recently recaptured El Iskandarîya. 7 Air Groups, 4 with Tactical Bombers and two with Dive Bombers have already rebased into the city's Air Base. The empty pockets elsewhere have been mopped up and soon Rashîd, in the Nile Delta, will return to British hands too.
The Tankers pushed on into El Alamein, where they outran their HQ's radio range, and their supply train, they're now waiting for supplies from the recently established convoy into El Iskandarîya to reach them, while their HQ is on a train from Tel Aviv, desperately trying to catch up with it's units.

After the capture of Casablanca, the Regio Esercito walked into El Jadida, to the south of the city, and less than 100km from the final French port in the region. The current estimate is that in less than a month, the Armée de l'Afrique will be no more...

After being tasked with improving the Armour (Level 3) of our Medium Tanks, most design teams came up with another mongrel of a BT-7M+ variant. One team stood apart, the design team lead by engineer Mikhail Koshkin of the Kharkov Komintern Locomotive Plant. They had been thinking about a successor to the BT series for a while, and when the specifications for a tank with a better Armour layout and thickness was sent out, they had the budget to try things out they had wanted to do for some time. Based on the chassis used in the SU-100 Tank-Destroyer and the SU-122 Self-propelled Gun, they proposed a revolutionary new design, incorporating brand new and thicker sloped armour, as per the specifications. The T-34 is a brand new platform, with doubtlessly a lot of potential, and in contrast with the BT-7 upgraded upgraded upgraded versions other design teams proposed, it was actually usable with the prescribed amount of armour. At the demonstrations, Comrade Stalin was very impressed, and orders have gone out to replace all of our BT-7Ms as quickly as possible with the new vehicles.
t-34-76-m1941-min.png

Blueprints of the new T-34 M1941. Armour thickness varied from 60mm at the front of the turret to 15mm on the bottom of the hull. Especially innovative is the 52mm 30° sloped armour on the sides of the turret, as well as the front-facing 46mm 60° sloped armour of the hull. Because of all this armour it is somewhat slower than the latest BT-7M variants using the same V-2 500hp engine, but a top speed of 53km/h is nothing to laugh at, especially considering that the T-34 weighs in at about 26 tons. All round, the vehicle is less cramped than the BT-7M. At 6,68m long, 3m wide, and 2,45m tall, it is 1m longer, 70cm wider, and 3cm taller than it's predecessor. The increased stability and and extra space for ammunition and crew thanks to the larger footprint is a significant advantage. For now, the design will carry the tried and tested F-34 76,2mm gun, but the large hull would probably allow for a larger gun to be installed in the future, with a modified turret, that is.
Now, resources have been diverted to the development of training and selection procedures, as well as organisation proposals for a new type of unit, specialised in Naval Landings. These units, modelled after the British Royal Marines will probably be attached to the Red Navy, and allow us to strike further than with our Paratroopers.
The VVS's electronics engineers found a way to make a ground-scanning radar, or Navigation Radar, small enough to fit in our single Engine Aeroplanes. The new technology should help our Aircraft detect hard targets on the ground beyond their visual range. Installation has already started.
The electronics engineers are now looking into a new and improved Small Air Search Radar (Level 2).
New Training (Level 3) manuals and schedules for our CAS Pilots have been delivered by another VVS team, our Assault Aviation Groups have already started additional training flights to improve their organisation.
This VVS team has now started looking into Training (Level 1) for the Ground Crews working to maintain and repair our Tactical Bombers.

Finally we can scrap the BT-7Ms! A decent tank in its time, but horribly past its use-by date at this moment. That fact alone has me wanting to raise a glass of fine vodka and play the Soviet anthem as loud as humanely possible.

Let's hope the brief lull in British advance doesn't allow the Italians to dig in and mount an effective defense.

I think the Italians facing the British will be having supply issues with the losses of all those ports. Now, once the French are knocked out of Northern Africa we may say some reinforcements showing up.

Yes, let's raise a glass to the retirement of the BT-7M upgraded upgraded upgraded version... And let's welcome the brand new T-34, the new workhorse of the REd Army Tank Divisions.

Let's hope the brief lull in British advance doesn't allow the Italians to dig in and mount an effective defense.

Considering the continued Italian advance in French north Africa, I believe they still retain a limited capability to supply units across the Med. Only it's not enough to supply all of their troops. Currently they seem to be prioritising Morocco, but once the French are crushed there, there is a reasonable chance that they'll eventually be able to supply a part of the forces facing the British. Unless, of course the British and French sink all of the remaining Italian convoys before they build new ones...

The 10th of September 1941, Tbilisi, 12,4°C, 4pm Moscow Time,

I flew to Tbilisi on the invitation of 'Devyat'. On the sidelines of the festivities surrounding the opening of the first major expansion to the city's Air Base in more than a decade.

Beira-square-1941-Tbilisi-min.jpg

Beria Square in
Tbilisi, city hall, on the left, where the meeting was held. On the right, the headquarters of 'Binsotsbank', previously the 'Bank of Georgia' before it's nationalisation. There are plans to erect a statue of Lenin on this square, but the resources were diverted to wartime preparations, maybe after the war...
There was also a somewhat secret commemoration of the great bank robbery perpetuated by Bolsheviks in Yerevan Square in 1907, under the leadership of none other than our Comrade Secretary General Joseph Stalin, then a idealistic young man.
The Bolsheviks killed 30 people in the violent robbery and made it out with a cool 341.000 Roubles (170.000 $ in 1907 or about 4 Million $ in 2012). The money was used to fund revolutionary activities.
On the 5th of December, in my absence, Air Bases were discussed:

Tbilisi's recent expansion with a secondary Air Strip and a Concrete Control tower is considered insufficient, and thus a construction team was ordered to harden it into a second runway, in parallel more more maintenance hangars will be built... (Level 4) This, to allow for the operation of 400-500 Aeroplanes, meaning that any of our Aviation Corps could operate here in ideal conditions if we ever find ourselves at war with Turkey.

With it's Airstrip recently converted to a hardened Runway, the addition of a secondary Airstrip and a concrete control tower (Level 3) in Riga has been fast-tracked as this improvement will allow our Assault Aviation Corps to be moved closer to the German border into Riga Air Base.

For similar reasons Lwow Air Base will be expanded further after the last round, including Ammunition storage facilities and Pilot's sleeping facilities, it's third runway is now being hardened as concrete taxiways are added. (Level 6)

Expansion of Air Bases along our main defensive line continues. After Novomoskovosk got it's aviation fuel pipeline network, additional ammunitions storage and a dirt strip beside it's 4 runways, the same improvements (Level 9) will be added to Demjanski Air Base.

After 'Devyat' had caught me up on the Air Bases, we headed to the meeting on infrastructure. The news is good

These 20 projects, started in the beginning of June, have been completed:

-Transsiberian railroad, Kuybyshev-Ufa-Omsk:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in
Argajas, Teca, and Galkino.

-Lake Ladoga East Coast,
Tihvin-Sortavala-Viipuri-Leningrad Railroad
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 5' in
Pryazha and to 'Level 6' in Olonets.

-Dniepr East Bank
Kyiv-Dnipopetrovsk-Zaporizhzhya-Mykolaiv Railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 8' in
Mahdalynivka, Snelnykove, Zaporizhzhya, Welykkyj Tokmak, and Kerson.

-Berezina East Bank
Kholm-Homel Railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 8' in
Biesankovicy, Chalopienicy, Bialynicy, and Kirovsk.

-Moskva peripheral railway network:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in
Zvenigorod, Obninsk, Ivanovskoye and Serpuhov.

-
Tumnin Air Base side-branch of the Trans-Siberian Ralroad:
Infrastructure will be improved to 'Level 4' in
Tumnin.

-
Tyndinskiy Air Base side-branch of the Trans-Siberian Ralroad:
Infrastructure will be improved to 'Level 4' in
Berezitovyy.
Priorities were re-evaluated, but in the end not much changed. In the following 20 provinces work will begin (19) or continue (1):

-Transsiberian railroad, Kuybyshev-Ufa-Omsk:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in
Kargapol'e, Kazanskoye, and Sinitsyna.

-Lake Ladoga East Coast, Tihvin-Sortavala-Viipuri-Leningrad Railroad
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 6' in
Pryazha and in Vidlica.

-Berezina East Bank Kholm-Homel Railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 8' in
Parycy, and Rahachow.

-Moskva peripheral railway network:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in
Belyy Gorodok, Teykovo, Kurlovskiy and Beloomut.

-
Tyndinskiy Air Base side-branch of the Trans-Siberian Ralroad:
Infrastructure will be improved to 'Level 4' in
Solov'evsk and Tyndinskiy.

-Desna East Bank
Moskva-Brjansk-Kyiv Railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in
Suvorov, Belev, Duderovskiy, Navlja, Serednya Buda, Yampil, and Shostka.
The 'Level 8' objective for our Leningrad-Novaya Ladoga-Vityebsk-Homel-Kyiv-Dnipopetrovsk-Zaporizhzhya-Mykolaiv Defensive line has been completed.
In Finland, work continues, slowly improving the network around lake Ladoga to 'Level 6', and linking it with the
Murmansk line. Investment in Finland will remain low but stable, as we need to be sure that we can supply a possible war against Sweden, or Norway all through winter.
The network around
Moskva is improving, this should increase the versatility of our very centralised Armed Forces logistics. The second ring of railway hubs has been delivered, now, Infrastructure three nodes away is being improved to 'Level 7'.
Additionally, a new project was started to deal with a sometimes intermittent supply flow to the south, and add another defensive line. The Desna River flows roughly in a straight line from the
Moskva area to the Kyiv area, and so an additional rail-line will be built on it's east bank to clear up some of the southbound bottlenecks.
Tunmin Air Base is now adequately connected to the network, the siding to the Tyndinskiy Air Base, still needs some work.
The work on the Trans-Siberian Railway continues, slowly getting closer to
Omsk.

I will now hitch a ride to Moscow in the back seat of a Yak-7 trainer which participated in the inauguration of the Air Base, before publishing the next report tomorrow,

Greetings,

'Odin'

Still time and resources for necessary infrastructure improvement - and it is looking as if less and less of it will likely to fall into German hands.

Yes, their clowning around seems to signal their upcoming demise... About those capitalists in America... It'll probably take some doing, but I expect that if, the fight against the axis goes relatively smoothly, we'll have a large number of experienced troops available, and the main problem will be getting enough of those veteran troops across the Atlantic and keeping them supplied. But that's a problem for another time...

Still time and resources for necessary infrastructure improvement - and it is looking as if less and less of it will likely to fall into German hands.
Investment in infrastructure is expected to remain constant or even go up as time goes on, as there is still so much room for improvement.

German troops continue their unopposed push North, with their capture of Grong, and Nordli, they are 170km north of Trondheim, and a whopping 340km from Narvik.
GNW41-09-11S-min.jpeg

The Germans, and a few Italians have started arriving in force from the north. They have struck south, between the Glomma and Lagen rivers, taking Koppang, Trette, and Lillehammer, 100km to the North-East from Oslo. The Norwegians didn't sit still, they took Tyin, in what looks like an attempt to cut the German forces in 2. The spearhead is already badly exposed before it even reached the coast, this will probably amount to nothing. It seems we're finally witnessing the last weeks of Norway, with a clear superiority in numbers on the Axis side, only a strong British intervention could save Norway now.

Meanwhile, the two Royal Marines Divisions are on trains to Tel Aviv Yafo, where small fleets with landing craft are waiting for them... is an amphibious operation with actual Marines being planned? Only time will tell...

Research:
With the advent of Heavy Tanks, and increases in armour thickness and improvements in it's orientation, the Red Army saw the need for a cutting edge Infantry Anti-Tank Weapon (Level 5). Soon, calculations pointed to the fact that a 57mm Gun would be sufficient in calibre and still relatively easy to manoeuvre, after months of designing and testing, the chosen gun is finally ready for mass production and deployment. The weapon will replace the current 45mm PtP M1938.
ZiS-2_M1941-min.jpg

The winning design comes from the Research team of Artillery Engineer V.G. Grabin, from No.92 Artillery Factory in Nizhni Novgorod. Vasily Grabin's team already made itself known in 1938 with the now obsolescent ZiS-3 76.2mm Anti-Tank Gun. Keeping within the naming convention, the new gun has been called the 57mm PtP M1941 (aka. ZiS-2), as it is based on an experimental 1936 gun design also called the ZiS-2 and preceding the ZiS-3. (ZiS, short for 'Zavod Imeni Stalina' or 'Factory for Stalin')
The final design is 7,03 meters long, it features an integrated recoil mechanism, mounting hardware as well as a small Gun Shied. The two-wheeled split-trail carriage serves both as a transport and a firing base, the weapon is strictly Line of Sight. In testing Muzzle Velocities slightly over 1.000 m/s were reached. Maximum firing range is over 8,3km. Thanks to the semi-automatic design, experienced crews are expected to be able to reach a fire rate about 25 rounds per minute. This means that during firing, the block of the vertical block breech opens and closes automatically, and all the loader has to do is place a round in the receiver. Maximum penetration is approximately 90mm of HRA (Hot Rolled steel Armour plating)
The gun covers elevations between 25° and -5° and can traverse from -56° to 56° left to right without moving the platform.
With a weight of 1,25 tons, the whole platform can be rotated by it's crew, but transport over any kind of distance necessitates it to be pulled by a vehicle, or , using a limber, by a group 6 horses. (or other towing animals like donkeys or oxes)

Less glamorous, but still important, specifications have gone out for a cheap to produce Support Weapon (Level 3) for our second-line Militia and Garrison Units.

I am glade to see some advancement in Anti-Tank weapons and Support Weapons. The Glorious Ground Troops of the Soviet Union will need such weapons when deal with the Huns' Panzers.

The Infantry AT weapons are now ahead of time... the 57mm ZiS-2 is a 1942 weapon in the Paradox Universe, so no effort was spared on this one... As you can see, the introduction of the T-34 and new Infantry AT weapons has made upgrade production needs go through the roof, by delaying a few projects, the gap can easily be filled with the level of priority it deserves...
The Militia, on the other hand, are somewhat behind, and as we train more Garrison units to guard Naval Bases, and soon for some possible future operations, it would be nice to see them have somewhat modern Support Weapons and Small Arms so they continue to hold their own on the defensive...
