Please excuse me if this is improper content or the wrong place to post.

First, a bug:

There is an event that leads to increased IC's in two Soviet provinces, Archangelesk and Murmansk. (The IC's are credited to the Soviets and debited from the USA.)

If the Axis captures these provinces, the IC's return to the USA, which simulates the convoys getting cut off.

However, it is possible to ge the "Bitter Peace" event without capturing Murmansk, and if this happens, you end up with 40+ IC's in Murmansk. I assume this is a bug.

Second, a terrible problem:

I had conquered or allied with all of Europe and India, and was getting ready to invade China. I made a save game here (November, 1941), then I went to work on China. I made periodic save games.

I can't load any of these save games now. The files load and then I get an immediate CTD.

I don't know if this is a mod problem or if it's a game problem, and I don't know if anyone is interested in debugging a 7 megabyte save game file. If anyone wants to try to fix this, please contact me at brucemo@seanet.com

I played without the "invasion_beta" file, if this matters. I found the appropriate place to turn it off, and turned it off.

So my game ended with the conquest of China.

Experiences:

It is a fun mod. I played it on normal/normal. As the Germans, there are five major challenges: Poland, France, USSR, UK, and USA.

I got through the first four by 1941. They are all much tougher than in the regular version, but if you research infantry techs, get advanced medium tanks, and make sure you have enough units to do the job (200+ by the time you take on the SU), it is certainly not impossible. I started making infantry in 1938, and had maybe 20 armored divisions by the time I attacked Poland.

I took some advice and made AT infantry, but I'm not certain this is necessary. There are certainly a huge number of AT technologies, so you can get massive hard attack. It didn't really benefit me much though because the Soviets were gone before they could get a lot of tanks.

I very much enjoy the new techs and some of the other improvements. I had to concentrate on unit-building and diplomacy more than I have had to in the past.

I have read about people having major problems winning with this mod. Perhaps my turning off the invasion sub-mod helped, but I think that concentrating on winning Poland and France as quickly as possible and with as much force as possible gives you enough advantage that the Soviets aren't impossible. I always had enough units and I never went below 1500 manpower. I had to think though, and I had to use SR a lot, which I think is fine now that there are unit limits on that.

Comments:

Japan is useless. In the hands-off game I played, they were kicked out of China and the Chinese were doing amphibious landings on the Japanese mainland. In the "live" game I played, they were going seriously backwards in China, even after I gave them a lot of techs. If I hadn't helped them, they would have been kicked out of China.

The Italians gave me a whole bunch of units, which I transported to Africa for them and then returned control. They were able to push the British out. I found this to be very satisfying. I wish I could do an "Afrika Corps" thing though, but you can't really do this. You have to run convoys for Germany around to there, and they get smoked. This is not a problem with the mod.

This is the first time I've ever seen Republican Spain win, and they won in both the games I played/saw. Perhaps it is necessary to contribute more directly if you want Franco to win.

The USA sometimes mounted tiny invasions, but they weren't a factor in Europe. I know that the invasion mod is supposed to help this, but I don't like the idea that the game would just manufacture units out of nothing and dump them in Europe on top of whatever is there.

In my "live" game, the Soviets attacked Finland in the Winter War, and made essentially no progress, so perhaps the Finns are a bit too tough.

Very good mod.

Redflag will have to look into that :)

Known. First time this has appeared in beta6 with tankmod added. So i GUESS it is caused by that addition.

I have tried debugging one of that saves, no success. But it is not events i can tell.

Which difficulty did you choose at the beginning. The event there decides mainly on manpower, which is the most precious resource in Stony Road.

Oh man, :), i tuned them for Rising Sun and took over some things for Stony Road. Will lower them a little.

Well, just conquer France wholy...

The final will require even more of an eye of SPR, because they are getting more actively supported by USSR in the harder levels.

Night!y or MKShep.. not sure if either of you can fix this or if this is a hardcoded issue but i have found a bug i believe and it's to do with the Vichy France issue. When the Vichy state is intalled about a week or two later de Gaulle jumps up with a Free France proclomation. Well, as a good German does, he takes control of the Vichied units to maneuver them for a good defense etc. Well, i found the leader de Gaulle leading about 20 divisions in Vichy. Can this be fixed? Can this leader be taken outta the mix of Vichy leaders?

Check your email. I just sent you my email address.

PS, Zip the corrupt save game file up

I may have a cable modem, but even multimeg files
choke my mail download time

I fixed the bug, and posted another thread about it. Destroyer escorts were broken.

I think the secret to not running out of manpower is to attack with overwhelming force, using massed upgrade panzers, from several directions if possible, backed up with close air if possible. In a few special cases (first attack in USSR), I attacked with both panzers and infantry, and I also attack from several directions with big infantry stacks when reducing pockets.

I play at normal/normal.

I think the mod is challenging but certainly not so crazy that it feels out of balance. It takes a lot longer to play it than it takes to play a normal 1936 campaign, and it's a lot more fun. Some strategies:

1) Reseach economic and electronic techs foremost. These increase IC's, which is important. There are some things like polyurethane, which increases IC's by some percentage.

2) You want to attack Poland with about 20 advanced medium tanks, 80 mm. In order to get this, you have to work pretty hard on the tank and artillery techs. I also went for every hard and soft attack mod I could get, and tried to do doctrines as well. I really enjoy the rich variety of weapon tech choices, it's very well done in this mod.

3) Upgraded close air (tactical bombers) is completely deadly. I did not invest in this as quickly as I could have, but I had some ready in time to attack the USSR (Spring 1940). A 9-stack of these will destroy the org of pretty much anything, and do a tremendous amount of material damage. I found that it is best to attack enemy units while they are engaged with my units. If you have close air nearby, you will never lose land battles. Also, if you've forced a single unit to retreat, you can hit it several times with the close air, and completely destroy it, which saves you from having to surround it and kill it. In my previous game, I didn't use close air, and mountains were a nightmare. In the game I just finished, I used close air a lot, and I had no problems with mountains. I could attack with one panzer, and then use the close air to blast the enemy units down until the panzer won, even at 1% attack efficiency. This was much better than waiting for several months for an infantry stack to attack, and then losing anyway.

4) SR is either an exploit or it isn't. I decided it wasn't, and relied on it tremendously. My strategy is to SR a bunch of infantry units, blast through with tanks, and SR into the provinces that the tanks capture. This prevents me from getting cut off, and keeps me from having to peel tanks off of my 9-stacks of panzers. The infantry is simply not fast enough to follow behind the tanks, it's better to SR it in. This makes blitz penetration tactics way more effective.

In the game I just finished, Japan was useless again, but the Nationalists did win in Spain. The Japanese made no progress against the Chinese, and were getting pushed back. When they found themselves fighting the Soviets, they were getting pulverized on two fronts. Later, after the Soviets and Chinese were completely gone, they had terrible trouble in the Phillipines, and couldn't even take a province.

The Americans should also be a little more fearsome. Having played them in a standard game, I know that you can research the heck out of the tech tree if you want to. I think that the AI may be failing to do this very well. Also, it's not really defending against a German invasion very well. You can't really defend against Panzers by using SR to block them with units, because the org is too low. I wish the game would defend its beacheads better, and understand that Germans in Gaspe means that it should put units in every Northeast province, right now.

Thanks again,

bruce
