Regarding sliders vs buttons. In this era I think buttons much better reflect the reality of governance than sliders. I'm not a scholar of the period, but my impression is that central governments just didn't have either the level of control or the understanding (generally, admitting exceptions) to so finely tune their country that sliders provide. Buttons (although perhaps 5 v 3) seem to me to much better represent the era.
