Many hours invested in this game, I am finally beginning to get a foothold on the understanding of the battle mechanics. Still haven't made it past 1943 as I get lost - dazed & confused - in all the action all over the map. End up restarting, and each time I do, I learn a bit more.

Question: Do off shore battle fleets provide any support for land forces engaged in an adjacent region?

Question: Do off shore battle fleets provide any support for land forces engaged in an adjacent region?

Only if you use the "hold" mission (looks like an anchor) and park them just offshore. Then they'll give the enemy forces up to a 25% penalty to soft attack, hard attack, defense and breakthrough, depending on the number and type of ships used.

Thanks for that guide. There are quite some helpful tips and good advice regarding production and research priorities. But I still have some issues:
  • No mention of local supply? No explanation of this "edges from incoming provinces" thing? Judging from this guide I'd expect supply to work exactly like in HOI3, while actually, in my experience, supply chains and especially protection of supply convoys can be safely ignored in HOI4.
  • Destroyers are good for convoy escort? Is there any reason for that? To be honest, the "submarines are good for raiding convoys, destroyers are good for protecting convoys" theme seems to be whishful thinking right now. Maybe after the next patch?
  • Forcing a government change doesn't make the nation your ally, as far as I am aware of. This is especially misleading since the AI still pursues wars from it's national focus tree, happily ignoring circumstances and government form.
  • And mechanics for infantry division? This has been mentioned before. Not really necessary in my opinion. Clashes with your otherwise fine tips for research priorities.

Great job. I have a major change. On page 44 bullet 2. The situation you are describing for an Invasion is due to a lack of Invasion Capacity, not Convoys. This is a big deal because if you set up multiple invasions, only your first one will allow you to attach units to the Invasion Plan. The others will not until the first invasion occurs due to a lack of Invasion Capacity.

I am not sure how well I am explaining this, but I only recently understood this after playing several hundred hours. But I am not that smart, so there is that.

Thanks

Random thought (and I'm not volunteering for this, at least not right now - don't have the capacity) but the guide sounds like something that would be good to 'port' to the wiki (from where it would be both accessible in-game, and editable for changes in mechanics as time goes by).

Thanks for the guide! I picked up HoI 4 back in April and have been slowly learning it since. I'd worked out a few things like the importance of capability multipliers on my own, but I'm also learning some new stuff from the guide. :)

Even though this isn't a completely comprehensive guide, it's a lot more than most companies give, i'm really not very good at paradox grand strategies but this will help me, i do enjoy their games greatly! :D

Thanks, this guide is invaluable. Easy to find, and up to date. Just got HOI4 yesterday and already took Italy through Ethopia, Yugoslavia, and Greece following the guide. I'm still totally lost with the Naval and Supply stuff, among others, but this was a great start.

Corrections:

"For example, Germany starts the game with very few dockyards compared to France, the United Kingdom and the United States."

Germany starts with more dockyards than France (10 vs. 8)

"But let’s assume you are starting with only three research slots, like the USSR or Italy."

Italy starts with four research slots in vanilla (though really it ought to be three).

Well, you could read the sentence

"For example, Germany starts the game with very few dockyards compared to France, the United Kingdom and the United States."

as meaning

"The ten German dockyards are fewer than the forty-nine French, British and American dockyards."

But if there's disagreement it's probably worth clarifying the sentence - maybe something like "Germany starts with far fewer dockyards than her likely enemies".

I mean, it was a good read while I was bored at work and there are useful tips strewn throughout, but it seems to be written from the direction of someone who is going to follow the historical timeline with war kicking off in 1939.

Because if I start building factories as Canada to attack the US, I finish 1 or maybe 2 before it's gank time. 2 if I research production, when I find it way more valuable to start on research, dispersed industry and sub research.

But if you are going to play the game straight, it's great, thank you.

Also, in that first war...I kind of like to get units out faster, not wait for artillery to complete or whatever support equipment, so much like the US, get the troops out, worry about equipment later.
