Subbed. My Hungary run for "Take That, von Habsburgs!" achievement is probably the most satisfying campaign I've played in EUIV. For some reason, that little campaign of mine (which is still ongoing, I'm trying to get Ottomans out of Europe) made me appreciate video games like Dwarf Fortress, CKII, EUIV, and XCOM 2 even more, thanks to the stories they can create.
Okay, a couple of questions:
-----------------------------------------
1. Do you have "Take That, von Habsburgs!" achievement? If not, do you plan to get the achievement in this AAR?
2. What idea groups did you pick up?
-----------------------------------------
Cheers!

1. Yes, the story with that achievement mainly involved fighting an Austro-French alliance back when they weren't historical enemies while having a hostile Commonwealth and Ottomans which would not let up.
2 . Defensive, Diplomatic and Quantity. By the fourth idea group unlocking, I had Austria.

Chapter 8 - A Hungarian-French standoff, More Conquering (Liberating) and the Birth of Prussia.

Despite everything which had transpired with the occupation and vassalization of what was considered core Russian lands, Anna would not waver in releasing her new lands. In her own words, she told the Russian ambassador if he approached her on the issue to "Try and take them. By the time you reach Kiev, you'll lose every army you have to the swamp of Eastern Europe."

This blatant disregard to quite easily her most powerful ally could quickly escalate to them becoming their most dangerous opponent yet. It was well known in European politics that the big three were Hungary, Russia, and France, with several other secondary nations like Great Britain, Denmark, the Papal States and Aragon to name a few, but for these two to break up and open hostilities were something no one in the Hungarian court wanted.

To this end, one David Milvanyi would risk his diplomatic career with one goal in mind. Prevent the now delicate relationship before the two superpowers melt down into open warfare. Any time the arrogant queen would spout off about Russia in a negative tone, it would be David who would weave them into tales of good will.

This was not easy with how often he had to do this.

0de7Wig.jpg

Finally, he was able to convince Anna to stop spouting off aggressive banter to her allies and instead to use such energy on her enemies. Taking her senior diplomat's advice, the tone changed. With this, the Russian problem was put to rest for the time being and she started to be more aware of her actions.

Further to her north, Brandenburg started its march to war, quickly take the remains of the once Kingdom of Poland for itself. This sparked an idea with the Empress and started to sew together an alliance with the German nation while leaving the Teutonic Order in the dust. Many of her people were surprised their lady would so willingly abandon one of her more dedicated allies but she, like many others, saw them as a tool and nothing more.

3M7yDRj.jpg

Within weeks, Poland fell and an awkward calm came over Europe which was not seen for a long time with the people. Hungary was busy modernizing itself while looking to the Aristocrats while doing what it could to Innovate itself further than any nation around it. This calm was actually a ruse as Anna had her eyes on Brabant and France.
More specifically, France had no heir and Brabant has an elderly ruler with a just as old heir. If Anna could get another Hunyadi in Western Europe, this would give Hungary an unprecedented opportunity as the barrier that was the Holy Roman Empire could no longer exist if Hungary gains either under a personal union.

Sadly, a French Hunyadi would not be seen as months later, the French got themselves a strong heir. However, Brabant still laid in a weak position. What Anna did not expect from this little... dance of royalty was the French now wanted a piece of this Dutch pie. Despite everything that had just happened in France, they stood in disagreement with Hungary.

If the situation could get any worse for Europe, the heir of Brabant died of natural causes which turned the Dutch lands into a diplomatic warzone. If Brabant did not find a legal heir to the throne, France and Hungary were going into a succession war for it. As this was happening in Western Europe, Hungary decided it was time to deal with Syria.

pYjl3wm.jpg

So with France and Hungary quite possibly going to war and the integration of Syria, Anna decided to press her luck and start down the path to protecting her country better in the North. Anna took a look and decided it was time to put the Order down. She saw nothing but weakness seeping from this outdated Order.

Finally, months after breaking the alliance with The Teutonic Order, the ruler of Brabant was able to find a male heir just in time for him to up and die himself. With this, Brabant was left with a sixty-one-year-old member of the British Tudor family. Still, France and Hungary were staring each other down, some saying they are sending assassins to kill each other.

wlL9rNG.jpg

With all this tense happening, both superpowers were surprised to hear that a man by the name of Oliver Cromwell led the members of the British Parliment to reject the British Crown which incited what would later be called the English Civil War. Some outside the isle question why it wasn't called the British Civil War but any spectator would notice all the fighting was in England.

As the isles were being burnt to the ground, word reached the Hungarian courts that the French kill fell into a coma which greatly weakened their claim. As such, Anna pushed her claim to the fullest which forced the nation of Brabant to concede and allow a Hunyadi heir to take the throne should no other heir come forth.

xMgq6D8.jpg

As the possible war that could destroy Central Europe as everyone knew it was averted, Anna decided it was time to pay Lithuania and to show Russia that Hungary still had their best interest in mind.

Furthermore, Lithuania had an alliance with the Ottomans which had lost its luster at this point but still was someone that Anna wanted to beat down.

Anna had one goal in mind for the Ottomans, to connect the Byzantines to her Turkish provinces at the expense of the owner. As the Ottomans were only a secondary player in this war, this meant that she couldn't take as much she'd like without incurring the wrath of neighbors. As such she only focused on a few provinces since she had a bigger focus on the north.

LFu0GC6.jpg

Within months of the war started, Hungarian forces marched to Lithuania proper and promptly sieged down the capital and surrounding forts to the capital. Despite being the larger of the two major nations in the war, Lithuania was the first to fall and not because of a Hungarian-Russian attack on all sides. Rather, the Lithuanian army sent its troops time and time again into unwinnable battles which quickly dissolved into a mass rout.

And the South, however, things weren't going as planned. Once more the Hungarian navy obliterated the autumn in one, but something was different this time, unlike all the other naval battles. The strength of the Hungarian had was starting to wane as more and more ships are coming into heavy damage territory and required docking to repair.

Anna, either unaware and not caring, carried on the blockade of the Ottoman capital with the remaining ships aided in the siege once the Hungarian forces moved through Byzantine territory and into Anatolia. Growing tired of needing a navy simply to cross the straits, Anna transfer control of one of the two straight crossings to Byzantium.

As this was happening in the peace treaty was being ratified, splendid news to reach the Hungarian courts at long last. The ruler of Brabant died and a Hunyadi was in control of it. Better yet, this Hunyadi did not have an heir which left them open to a possible union.

6U1OD5b.jpg

Following this splendid news, Anna turned her eyes to the know destroyed Lithuanian realm. Though she planned the very beginning, she demanded that the decaying nation give large swaths of its Western realm to the Hungarian realm while of its Northeastern region go to Russia.

6U1OD5b.jpg

But the relationship with Russia secured, Anna turned your gaze back to Brabant it to see to it that it joins her realm. While preparations were being made, Great Britain finally decided that it liked Oliver Cromwell so much that he was made into the legal ruler of the Kingdom... Republic? Anna brushed this development off, saying that this was just a rare moment and that Republics had no place in this world in large nations.

She also would say it has no place in Hungary...

Regardless by the time the forces are returned and supplies were acquired for a march to cross Germany, the Bavarian Emperor suddenly passed away and the title of Emperor returned back to Brabant. This greatly complicated things as it then that now France would have a deeper tie to it which reinstated the Succession War Crisis for both nations

GQoMKqe.jpg

Anna, knowing that a wrong step could result in the most damaging war Europe would ever see, bided her time and orders her armies on standby instead of preparations for war. Instead, her plan with Russia was actually starting to form. In her eyes war was inevitable with Russians. The only question is how close with they be to the capital and how much space could she make for it.

With everything happening so quickly, Anna did not realize that the Teutonic Order had invaded Lithuania and nearly took all of its homelands. This caused worry in the Empress whose plans with Brandenburg could possibly backfire if the order grew too strong too quickly.

xjaY5r2.jpg

Five years would be spent, once more staring down the French leader who, like his predecessor, would not back down from what they'd concede to be Hungarian savages. This greatly causes concern in the Hungarian court as the French were known to be some of the finest troops in all of Europe. Thankfully with a legal heir being crowned in Brabant, Anna could turn her eyes to the Holy Lands.

With Syria FINALLY being incorporated into the realm, Anna could set her eyes onto Jeruselum. Before she could declare war on the Mamluks, the lords actually reformed itself into the state of Egypt which caused... complications for the Empress of Hungary. Yes, the horsemen now claimed the title of one of the most influential nations of all time. And no, this change is nothing, Jeruselum will be hers eventually.

BiSlWhT.jpg

Instead, she moved into Anatolia and paid the Sultan a visit in the form of a land contributions. Or at least she would if HALF HER FLEET WASN'T ON FIRE AND SINKING! Ya, turns out that if you neglect your navy when your naval commander specifically says it needs repairs, you should heed his advice and at least look into it.

Instead, the Hungarian Navy, the pride, and joy of many previous Kings and Queens, had most of its hull full of rotting wood and those of it that had metal bottoms were too few in number. The combined on Ottoman-Tunis navies were able to outnumber that now diminished Hungarian Navy and see it the worst defeat it's ever faced.

Still, there were a small number of modern ships that were in operational use but these were mostly trade ships and only two of them were heavy ships. In a fit of rage that could only come from an Empress of Hungary, she demanded the head of the naval commander and that all ships be burned.

Thankfully, nearly everyone saw this was just a fit of madness and allow the naval commander and his family to sail to Crete which the Empress almost always forgot existed. From here he would live the rest of his days with his family, and offer his advice and experience to any naval officer who came to him. In esse, ce this man became a legend for defying the Empress but still loyal to the realm. One Janos Simon.

Still, the war went as planned, and for the Byzantine's help in ferrying troops to Anatolia, Anna gave Biga while Hungary took small provinces, The big prize was to liberate the nation of Armenia which was nearing full revolt she noticed during the war.

9vDZ2li.jpg

After her fit of rage and regaining her composure, Anna saw a few things developing in Northern Europe. For starters, Brandenburg was finally going after Poland to remove them forever. Scandinavia formed from the nation of Denmark and Saxony was experiencing republican revolutionaries. Anna did not care about this last fact but the first one did.

Offering an alliance with Brandenburg, she set her plan on creating a Northern buffer for her nation. Before this could happen, Russia called Hungary in an offer of the reminder of Western Lithuania in assistance for the war. Anna immediately accepted and within months, Vilnius fell and Hungary opted out the war, Lithuania burning as expected.

But Anna had one objective in mind, and it just so happened to involve Brandenburg.

CAsUvEG.jpg

Her advisors, however, were so openly against this idea that guards needed to be ordered to remove them from her presence. The thing was that from long, long ago when the natives that made of a pagan Baltics were still around, there was a tale. This tale had many names but it always ended the same way. The Prussians as they were called by the invading Christians, would form a nation unlike any would ever see.

Never again with these Prussians be looked down upon. Instead, all would look in fear of this nation and beg for mercy from it. While the pagans were, of course, converted or purged, details of the united peoples never left the local mindset. Anna was aware that Friedrich of Brandenburg knew of this tale and sought it's as a way to glory his state after the failing the Protestant Reformation.

Both nations had a common interest and if the Order lost it's newly acquired Lithuanian lands to Hungary in the process, all the better. This war, the last time Brandenburg wouldn't hear his story under that name, was nothing but a slaughter without a fight.

Despite the valiant efforts of Teutonic soldiers, they were defeated by the combined of lights of these two nations. The prize, all of Lithuania proper belonged to Hungary while Brandenburg obtained the very desirable port of the Danzig and the heart of the Prussian lands in the form of Konigsberg.

And within time from the victory they had, this nation was born in the fires of war...

With what happened in the game after the last chapter, it is deserving of a mini chapter. Take a guess on what happened

Give up, the Prussians started a war involving Four Great Powers and pulled most of Northern Germany and the Low Countries with it. And this was only after a year and a half of them becoming Prussia...

Just a little bit of a sneak peek for those of you who are curious just how crazy this war is. And for the record, France has crappy army composition, even worse than me. Also, what if I told you we are only slightly passed the halfway mark for the war with this little moment I just finished typing up.
---------------
With Aragon and Prussia regaining their footing, the invasion of Southern France with Hungary taking the lead could start. One thing that no one expected was a battle in the Gulf of Lion between France and Aragon which ended in utter defeat for the allied forces. Sadly, as Hungary was making headway with the fort, Great Britain launched another invasion in Southern Iberia.

This forced Aragon to stop the British from creating a beachhead where they could ferry more and more troops which could result in another front in this war. With control of the seas and the forts still holding for France, they decided to ship an army along with a support detachment over to help their longtime rival and by the time they arrived in the British controlled Sevilla, the British were heavily beaten.

Kalman was still bashing his head against the fortress of Roussillon when news reached him that a French army of nearly equal strength was heading his way to try and get Aragon out of the war. Simon Kemenyhad sent a letter out to the sieging general and made the situation and his orders clear.

"Kalman Frangepan, Leader of the Hungarian Second Army and the Army of Croatia, you are to hold the line against this force approaching you. Rumor has it that this army will be lead by the French king himself. Many a person will be closely observing this engagement, including Her Highness, Empress Anna, as it will be the first time both nations will send an army of near equal size.

Do your duty as you always have.

Simon Kemeny, Lead General of the Hungarian Armies"

This looks like it should be a rather critical battle. Nice initial roll :)

Chapter 8.5 - The Prussian Conquest of Luneburg...

A little under two years would pass for the elderly Anna as another son would perish from a hunting incident. As April began, Prussia came to the Hungarians to aid in their conquest of Luneberg. Not thinking about any type of reproduction, Anna accepted the call to aid and began sending her army Northwest.

w4DShrE.jpg

However, this lack of information would quickly come to haunt Anna as Verden which owned the city of Luneburg was allied to the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, who in turn, was allied to France and Great Britain... As April turned to May, Hungary quickly realized that this war involved Hungary and Prussia against the colonial and naval might of Great Britain, the military force of France and several powerful countries to back them both up.

in the struggle to come, a new host of characters would rise in Hungary and Prussia that would define the remaining century. From the military came what was called Star Generals which referred to the five generals of the Hungarian Army. As the war started, only Simon Kemeny was leading the Armies of Hungary but within weeks, it became apparent that he alone could not do this.

Kalman Frangepan, Jozsef Zapolya, Simon Beleznay and finally Janos Andrassy were called upon in the name of defending the motherland. During this, Simon Kemeny was trying to stop the Brabant army who was currently engaged with the much smaller Prussian army, led by their ruler, Friedrich III von Hohenzollern. by the time Simon was able to come to the aid of his ally, he discovered a very beaten Prussian army who managed to deal twice as much damage before he arrived.

rCaNL6l.jpg

During the time of the battle, word reached Prussia and Hungary that with the war against them by nearly two to one in terms of Great Powers, Aragon joined in the name of French aggression. With Aragon keeping France distracted, Prussia, the small defense force of Anhalt and Hungary marched into Verden and swiftly took it's Southern provinces alongside the city of Oldenburgian Thuringen.

Wanting a rematch, Brabant struck at the Prussian army but the Hungarian Army under Kemeny moved quickly but once again, found the Prussians decisively ruining the lives of any non-ally. While Simon joined the fray, the remained of the Hungarian forces were able to form a line from the sea at the capital of Verden of Stade to the neutral country of Wurzburg.

ZYF9g0B.jpg

In the midst of the conclusion of the battle, word reached the newly dubbed "Battle-King", British forces were making a naval invasion of Wismar which was protected by the Polotsk regiment which was utterly annihilated despite having the superior position. The British took the city of Wismar which forced the Hungarian Fourth Army under Janos Andrassy to defeat the smaller force and send them back to their ships.

Down South, the Verden army sought refuge in the lands of the Papal States to recover and strike into Inner Hungary, What they did not expect was an Aragonese Army in Sicily, When the Verden Army stationed itself in Lower Italy, the Aragonese Army launched an attacked and completely destroyed the army, leaving none alive to see the next day.

qlK15wJ.jpg

Back on the main front, Stade would soon fall to the Hungarian Third Army under Jozsef Zapolya, a man of Polish descent who fought with Poland but was offered a place in Hungary as a general with adjustments of course. Needing to relieve Verden, Oldenburg launched an assault but was quickly met and found by the Prussian King. Within days of the plan being executed, Oldenburg found itself running right back to its lands.

With the Aragon and France, no true gains have been made as both held very heavy defensive positions which neither wanted to waste their manpower on. Cleves, however, did not catch the memo and crossed the Pyrenees Range to unsiege a few provinces before promptly being escorted out by gun and steel.

Back with Kemeny and his army, he was able to corner part of the Brabant Army and obliterate it from the war, cutting its strength by a third. However, Brabant, being the Emperor, was able to draw on finances from all over Germany which helped them keep fighting. This showed as when the Aragonese Army from Sicily cornered another Brabant Army but lost despite outnumbering it.

m9DdJko.jpg

Following this, France launched a naval invasion of their own into Hungarian Croatia but Kalman Frangepan who actually was from Croatia, caught the French when they landed and the moment many were waiting for happened. Despite the Hungarians pushing the small army off, this battle was very important to Hungary as this meant that the all-powerful French military could be defeated.

With the war going to well for the allied forces, Friedrick decided it was time to put an end to the largest player in this war. He took the Prussian Army and marched straight into the heart of France. They marched straight through the border defenses and started what could be described as a major nuisance for France which forced them to pull back into their land to stop this destruction.

w5zuLzf.jpg

Polotsk, mainly it's army, was facing a very different story as they were greatly struggling against the weakest of the enemy nations while Kiev was doing much better than it. With them losing the second naval invasion by the British, Anna had enough and annexed the small duchy by reasons of failing to protect itself and the allied nations.

b7McnYt.jpg

Returning to the front, Hungary was able to take the capital of Cleves which was a devastating blow to the Northern nations. Behind the front, the Kievan army was able to identify the location of Cleves' Army which was trying to take Buda and knock Prussia's ally out. Thankfully, Simon Beleznay took command of the shattered Polotsk army and helped Kiev defeat the army.

In the heart of France, the Prussian Army was showing its teeth as army after army went to crush this invaded but found the tactics employed by Friedrich along with his seemingly invincible army. As Friedrich was busy distracting France and Brabant from the frontlines, Hungary took the moment and finally sieged down the last fort in Cleves.

bQDs0bs.jpg

With one of the Germanic states out of the way, Friedrich decided it was time for a tactical retreat and fall back to Aragon who was bashing their heads against the mountain forts. The French Armies were not having this and launched an all-out offensive to destroy the invaders. Hungary knew that Prussia couldn't take on the entire French Army alone.

To this end, Hungary moved into the small but very prosperous lands of Brabant while sending the Hungarian Second Army to make sure the French-Aragonese Front did not falter. Sneaking past the defenses, Kalman was able to regroup with the Prussian and Aragonese militaries and prepare for the breakthrough.

As this was happening in the South, Brabant sends an army to weaken the Hungarian offensive. Simon Kemeny knew something like this would happen and ordered the Fourth Army to come and reinforce them. Thankfully, Simon was able to handle this attack alone and pushed the Brabant Amy back to France.

XUVAJ42.jpg

Kalman had his work cut out for him as he had to keep a portion of his army to prevent the fortress from sallying forth to aid their king. Thankfully, with a lack of cavalry on the French side, Kalman was able to keep the French in check and result in an astounding success for the Hungarian military.

All news that reached Empress Anna wasn't pleasant with victory as Brabant was able to ambush a relief army which was traveling towards the front and destroy any semblance of command. Routing quickly followed and Leonard de Leeuw claimed a very important victory for his side of the war.

GBFFKL5.jpg

Quickly following his victory, Leonard tried his hand with invading Hungary. Kiev tried their best to keep Brabant and Leonard from breaching the Hungarian Bohemia defensive land but they too found the same fate as the relief force. With not one but two armies being destroyed by this Brabant band of men, Simon Kemeny could not ignore this threat anymore.

Days later, Oldenburg was forced out of the war which allowed Hungary to concentrated the First, Third and Fifth Armies to push back this actual threat which, to Anna shock, was not French. Speaking of France, the relief force sent to Southern Iberian was devastated beyond belief alongside the one enemy they never thought they would try and save.

Janos Andrassy, Leader of the Romanian detachment of the military was tasked with protecting the front line. What he found was another French Army under Xavier de Chambronne to put pressure on the front to try and force a white peace. What he found was that one does not simply take on Romanians who are fighting for a cause they believe in and expect a rout within minutes of seeing French uniforms.

Finally, with Brabant being stalled on the veteran brigade located in Praha who easily pushed back the attacked on four separate occasions until Simon Beleznav engaged the invaded with Simon Kemeny and Jozsef Zapolya quickly helped the defenders. At last, the combined might of these three armies was enough to stop Leonard who made his retreat back to the front.

2tmZzaT.jpg

Back with Janos, the French seemingly had not learned the first time the might of the Romanian detachment in Hungary but had made gains on the much smaller force. Janos, despite orders from Anna to hold the line no matter what, pulled his troops from Braunschweig to the city of Ansbach where they would make their final stand.

Janos, knowing the morale of his men was quickly dropping as defensive constructions were being built in and around the city, moved to the front line where his sappers were and grabbed a shovel to join his men. His second in command, Ioan Vladimirescu, walked up to his general and asked one question.

"Sir, why are you putting yourself in the line of fire when you should be in a more secure location?"

Janos shoveled a layer of dirt into a pile to act as cover when he turned to Ioan. "A leader who does not put himself in the same danger as his men is no leader. I will not send my men into battle if I am not willing to do the same."

If any man had a shred of doubt, it no longer existed as Janos proved himself a man of actions, not just words. The French besieged the German city, and indeed, Janos was there on the front lines as Ioan was ordered to fill his role on the upper level. Either through sheer luck and tactical superiority, Janos saw the French general and ordered a detachment of Carpathian archers to mack short work of him.

Without a leader, the French leadership faulted which allowed Janos to sally forth and eliminate as many foes as they could before night set in...

This was the final, major battle that took place in the war. Minor conflicts took place for the remainder of the year but by the beginning of the new year, the war had finally ended in victory for the five-nation alliance of Prussia, Aragon, Anhalt, Hungary, and Kiev. The cost of the war was high for both sides, some numbers saying half a million perished which some overestimations claimed it went over a million. Either way, Prussia showed itself to be a powerful threat to all around it.

For those of you who might be confused, here is a little list of which general led what and their nationality.

1st - Simon Kemeny (Hungarian)

2nd - Kalman Frangepan (Croatian)

3rd - Jozsef Zapolya (Polish)

4th - Janos Andrassy (Romanian)

5th - Simon Beleznay (Hungarian)

Those were some hard-fought battles, and so many deaths for just two provinces: but I guess it will be worth it, as the enemy is also severely weakened now. Go Hungary go!

Chapter 9 - Byzantine Inheritance, the Scorching Deserts of Egypt and the Russian Question

With the war finally over for Hungary, the higher-ups of it turned their gaze to their ally, Byzantium. Long has it been a valuable ally, back in the times of Janos Hunyadi and now with Anne. For many generations of Hunyadis, it was the dream to one day sit on the throne of Constantinople which they saw as rightfully theirs for saving the nations on more than one occasion.

A few times, the imperial line did shake in it stability but now was a chance Anne knew she had to take. The ruler of the nation was around her age with the heir being not too far behind in age. Further news discovered that there was no one else of legitimacy to claim the throne which gave Anne an opening.

Ue3t6du.jpg

During these dealings, Austrian Archduchess Anna I von Habsburg lost her child to disease which gripped her with immense sadness. While some would feel pity for the ruler, Anna of Hungary never was one to be... nice. In fact, she might very well have played a part in the death of the kid, but there was no proof of this.

Still, the Austrian was only in her mid forties which still gave the nation time to find a suitable heir and not fall under the Hungarian sphere of influence. As this was happening, the puppet of Kiev was starting to seeking independence on the claim of their leader not having the best interest of the nation in mind.

Anna's response? Destroy the political careers of any who would dare stand between her and total control of the Empire. What she did not know would happen is that several thousands of her people were starting to hate their leader. Furthermore, rumors of British rule of law was starting to seep into the country by the ports of Venice, rules of law which might contain the words Democracy, Republicism, and Freedom. All words that Anna hated to hear from her subjects.

In her bits of political destruction, he finally set her eyes on one of the hearts of the Islamic world, Jerusalem. With such a formally converted Muslim population in her empire, her ministers knew very well that, while not on the scale of Mecca or Medina, would still be a serious blow to the religion if they lost such an important location.

The Empress' orders were clear, take Jerusalem, create a buffer around the city which not only protected the city from future attacks but gave the Hungarians easy launching points for further invasions into either Egypt proper or the Arabian Peninsula.

With Janos Andrassy leading the main push into the lands of Egypt, he pierced the weak and neglected defenses and made it into Jerusalem within weeks. However, what he found was a very stiff and determined population of multiple religions standing up against the Hungarian military. In the end, the city was taken and further pushes were made through the Sinai and to Alexandria.

oIMq2xJ.jpg

It quite a few months to knock out both Cairo, and later Alexandria, but once they did, the path was open to Middle and Upper Egypt. With Janos moved down the Nile River which utter confused him as to why it was moving in the opposite direction it should be, He finally caught the Egyptian forces which were quickly routed alongside Mombasa.

Janos continued marching down the still baffling river and found the remnants of Egypt which were captured and used as bargaining chips to play the Sultan's heartstrings. With thousands of lives on the lines and possibly tens of thousands of his peoples lives alongside his allies forced his hands into signing the peace.

With one of the holiest cities under the Hungarian belt, the Empress of Hungary had fulfilled one of her life goals. Sadly, or happily depending on how you are, Anna passed away not too long after the capture of Jerusalem. Before her death, Anna made it very clear that she was not going to allow any non-Christian into the city and force all who did not convert to leave or die.

Following Anna's death, her son, Laszlo the Fifth ascended the throne and looked over his new empire with worry. Many, and he knew many, resented the Empress and hoped for Laszlo to be a better ruler. While not as gifted in running the nation like his descendants, he was stubborn about getting certain tasks done. First off, the question of religion.

He knew that the nation would see only Christianity as it's sole religion, but knew that his mother's... interesting decree of forcing longtime residents to pack up or die was too far. Laszlo spent a good deal of time his first week reversing this order and allowing the previous owners to return.

While it took quite a lot of work in the first week, it was both the right thing to do, but also the logical thing to do. Reason being is that it meant more people to tax, more people producing goods, more people to call upon in times of war and just made sense. Yes, Christian settlers who were starting to make their home in the newly "liberated" section now had to give up their new homes, but Laszlo needed to keep the nations together during the first years of his rule to show he was a symbol of stability, not of chaos.

This was not enough, however, as a pretender did indeed rise up in Central Hungary and made he was to kill the new Emperor. Kalman, however, was not having it and moved his Army of Croatia to meet the pretender and, while being offered to serve as Grand Marshall of Hungary should he join, burning the note and destroyed the pretender.

To some of Anna's former advisors' surprise, Laszlo allowed the rebelling forcing to return to their homes on the condition of being restricted in movement without the approval of the local governer's consent. Really, this was a way to keep embers of rebellion down while not turning them into martyrs.

Interestingly, while Hungary was busy dealing with Egypt, the French were being destroyed by both Austria and Aragon who overwhelmed the defenses of France and sieged down most of the countryside. Better yet, certain populations in Russia were in full revolt against their overlord, giving Hungary time to prepare for a future conflict with them should the need arise.

During there adventures, Prussia called upon Hungary in assisting in sieging down various German princes which Laszlo ultimately agreed too. Unlike Anna who blindly saw the Prussians as valuable allies, Laszlo saw the power the Prussians could call upon... and it worried him greatly. The German states, while weak on their own, represented a region of Europe that could if united, be the most powerful nation in Europe and the world.

The war itself was nothing worthy of not as the only nation which was an issue was Switzerland and their impressive infantry coordination. In the end, Lubeck fell and the mountain stronghold was able to sign a white peace with Prussia, sealing the fate of the merchant nation. Prussia demanded complete annexation and that was what they got, much to the dismay of many in the German region.

Two major events would take place on the world stage in the time between the end of 1697 to 1704. First was actually not in Europe but in Asia. The Chinese giant known of Ming who has fallen woefully behind in every field but the welfare of its citizens. This all changed as the Emperor of China died without a legal heir. This spiral out of control until the once mighty Empire was in full revolt.

The second, and probably the most important to Hungary, The Byzantine Emperor finally died of old age and the heir of his own. This sixty-six-year-old ruler would die soon which would put themselves under the authority of Laszlo. WHile this might be happy news to Laszlo, Russia made it very clear that they had, supposedly, as much reason to claim the throne.

A Succession War for the Byzantine Empire was brewing.

And indeed it came.

Just want to make a note here. Since I unintentionally wrote this which could very easily be made into a parallel of real-life events in the Middle East, by no means is this meant to serve as an offense to any peoples group and I apologize if I did offend any person on the issue.
