You put on a STERN EXPRESSION and square your shoulders as you look back at the SHADOWY FIGURES, returning their accusing glares with a threatening snarl. “What does it look like I’m doing?” you retort, the hostility obvious in your VOICE. “This is UNFAIR and you know it. I am FIXING IT to be the way it’s SUPPOSED to be.”

The SHADOWY FIGURES hesitate, looking at one another with some TREPIDATION. Your INTIMIDATE ROLL must have been high! The central figure, in particular, looks unused to having his RITUAL called into question, and is at a LOSS FOR WORDS.

You press the advantage, and add, “Maybe I’ll just head off and COME BACK NEXT TIME.” This adds a particular sting to the threat; the SHADOWY FIGURES know perfectly well that you’re the one who brought 28 GOLD to purchase DELIVERED FOOD for tonight’s ritual!

“Okay! FINE,” grumbles the SHADOWY FIGURE at the center, throwing his hands up in disgusted defeat. “We’ll do things YOUR WAY.” Success! You’ve regained some control over the ritual. It’s a small advantage, but it may be just what you need to ensure that the POWERFUL TOTEMS survive against the assembled RED BEADS that sit beside them on the six-sided sigils.

Exercising his POWER over the RITUAL OBJECTS, the central figure casts a few of the BEADS into a small, transparent BAG OF HOLDING, removing them from the ritual. The odds against the MIGHTY HEROES represented by the TOTEMS are now significantly more even. “There,” growls the central figure, and gestures to the ritual table. “We’ll say you managed to GET RID OF A FEW. Now, will you make an ACTUAL DECISION, please?”

This is your moment to shine. Victory is in sight – all you have to do is find your way there.

You sternly command the POWERFUL TOTEM that resembles the WISE WIZARD to ATTACK the RED BEADS in the ritual on your behalf. This is a powerful incantation, and one that may yet save all of the totems, if the resulting MAGIC proves effective. Perhaps you will survive this ritual yet!

At your urging, the central SHADOWY FIGURE advances the ritual in the manner you describe, and uses his DESCRIPTIVE POWERS to coax forth MENTAL IMAGERY of a DEADLY FIREBALL that erupts within the goblins’ ranks, searing their flesh in a flaming roar…

…but your grin of triumph falters when, as the chaos settles, a single bead remains. The descriptive words of the SHADOWY FIGURE betray you, now spinning a tale of the goblins’ leader, a creature so fierce and tenacious as to have survived your attack nearly unharmed.

Worse still, this beast of a goblin is now directly before the WISE WIZARD whose fate you control, his glittering RED BEAD immediately adjacent to the corresponding TOTEM within the ritual.

Worse still, this concludes the portion of the ritual that you control, leaving you powerless to stop what is sure to come next: a crushing blow that may slay the totem, and you along with it!

With grim resignation, you produce a fresh SCROLL OF WISDOM, and begin to pen the ARCANE SYMBOLS that will describe a fresh-faced young WIZARD; a sorcerer with far less EXPERIENCE and POWER than the one currently embroiled in the ritual, but hopefully one with a bit more LUCK. You ponder what manner of adventures this wizard will embark upon, and whether he will be as CHERISHED at the ritual table as his predecessor.

“What are you doing?” inquires the central figure, shaking his head. “You’re not dead yet. Don’t start a new guy.” It’s no use, of course – he would not have said ‘yet’ if there were still hope for you. Still, he continues to admonish you until you put the scroll away and direct your attention back to the ritual at hand.

With your gambit a failure, it would seem all is lost.

Just then, a DEVICE OF COMPELLING POWER above the EXIT FROM THE DARKENED ROOM gives a momentary flash, and from within its depths, there are nine exacting tones, precise and measured – like church bells sounded atop a belfry, emanating from a dimension somewhere inside its glowing depths. The ritual has grown late, and a reprieve may yet be at hand!

Looking for any advantage, you use your "get out of jail free" card and SAVE GAME. At the least, you are still alive, and can be forevermore reincarnated at this exact moment, with at least a breath of hope left alive.
