I apologize if that sounded really stupid. I meant that I remember reading something about how the story of King Arthur was based off of a British Roman revolter state that revolted around the same time as Gallia, and that most of the events in the story were figurative for real life events in the history of said revolter state.
In all likelihood Arthur was probably just a Celtic warlord in Britain that held off the dirty Anglo-Saxon savages for some of his reign and got good enough publicity for people to talk about him a few centuries after his death and get a monk to write down said legend.

Yeah, that is probably the most likely story.

Oh i left out Australia is still, Terra Incognita, it actually got revealed in the 1860's So i'll be sure to include a screenshot of it in this update. As For China I found the screenshot afterwards, so I'm going to update the Intermission post with it once im done writing this one up.

Chapter 22: The Sun Emperor and the Pirate Queen

tupac.jpg

Prince Heinrich was never intended to take the Throne. However the deaths of Empress Damiane's children at a young age left the electorate with only her sister Hildeberg as an option, who herself only has the one daughter in Empress Frida. meaning the once Political tool of Prince Heinrich, the Offspring of the last Sapa Inca had become the Heir. Heinrich was of an adequate education and intelligence, his best virtue being the luck of being elected Kaiser during the fall of the Catholic church's political power, and the Rise of the Monarch as the source of power in europe.

cyyb1D4.png

When the Empress Frida grew sickly the Austrian administration wasted no time to paint the foreign looking Prince Heinrich's image as one of glory, splendor and divinity, so Heinrich's lineage could not become an issue with the Electorate. A Lineage was created from claims that the Sapa Inca was believed to be a descendent of thier own Pagan sun god and merged with the longtime standard of Annionan Papal Manipulation to Legitimize a new Austrian Emperor, Heinrich I, the Sun Emperor. A Ruler who answered only to God alone.

tYxjTy2.png

Heinrich's reign began with several acts relaxing restrictions upon Austrian Kolonia, Peru and Guyana. Tariffs were lowered, Austrian troops garrisons and forts were dismantled and the Austrian settlers in south America were left to their own devices, so long as the Peace was kept, and the remaining tariffs and gold shipments continued. A Sharp contrast to the tightening colonial policies in North and Central America. Of course with less severe laws, Heretics fleeing oppression in Austria fled instead to the new world and set up a small colony on the tip of south America.

OqeUzvN.png

Next, to offset the growing influence in Indonesia, Reichsofrat passed a series of free trade legislation, targeted at the increasing Tea and Sugar trade. In practice these laws would serve as the basis for treaties with the Coptic Empire of Malaysia where Austrian advisors would be sent to the Malaysian court in exchange for free trade rights in Malaysian ports as well as the cession of a small portion of the Harbor at Johor to serve as a naval base until Austrian colonies in the spice islands could be properly established.
ZEX7qUK.png

With the ports of Malaysia open to Austrian traders, the demand for Chinese and Asian goods skyrocketed. Portugual quickly negotiated their own terms with the Malaysians and Tea had begun to flow into Portugal en masse eventually engraving itself in Andalusian culture as a dietary stable. Austria had large amounts of Coffee plantations scattered throughout Guyanna and instead adopted Cocoa and Coffee bean related beverages over foreign tea.

4dg8D9x.png

With advancements in the East bringing wealth at home it was only Natural that a second circumnavigation was attempted, this time by ambitious Austrian sailors, basing themselves out of Kolonia. The Journey was not quite as eventful as the Norwegian Circumnavigation but great and accurate discoveries were made, especially regarding the growing Cordoban colonial Empire on the previously unknown continent of Australia.
7pojFGh.png

With Cordoba looking to control almost an entire Continent all its own, the Austrian administration drew up thier own plans to secure a colonial Empire in the east. Plans for a conquest of China, a Return to India, or even a conquest of Japan were drawn up, though Emperor Heinrich was unwilling to commit to yet more colonial conquests and instead prefered to continue to grow Austrian power in Europe.

zSPmqcz.png

Suprisingly absolutely nobody Emperor Heinrich set the Austrian army on alert, and had a declaration of war sent to the King of Germany. The Germans while they did resist could not put up any sort of suitable fight and ceded the lower half of their remaining land over to Austria, including the eternal city of ulm.

XLI3i7T.png

Meanwhile in nearby france, the Ruler that would kick off the age of Absolutism had taken power. Queen Elisa of France had a distinct disinterest in the Breton Court. At a young age she had convinced her father to allow her to Joint the Breton Navy, a controversy that had caused chaos within the Breton military leadership at the time. However, compromises were made, and the young princess had quickly won over many of the Breton Old Guard with her tactical genius at sea, Namely in taking advantage of Britannia's vast fleet of Light ships to harass the colonial operations of Cordoba, Spain and Portugal in the Caribbean as well as negotiating terms for Port access with the New Anglians and Natives in the gulf of mexico which had previously been thought impossible due to the longstanding Breton-Saxon feud. By the Age of twenty five Prince Elisa had become notorious throughout Europe and America, called La Pirate Reine, or 'The Pirate Queen'.

547941.jpg

With the Major Colonial powers hemmed in by the Celtic Navy, the New Anglians found themselves finally free to expand Inland as Cuba no longer needed to maintain such large garrisons for defense against the Cordobans and Umayyads. It did not take long for the Native powers of the Mississippi to begin to feel the sting of Anglican Grapeshot.

G9YwMB5.png

After the Death of her Father Elise was reportedly needed to be forcibly returned to the Breton court for her Coronation. Something that stirred her resentment with the old Status quo of her Elders. In series of moves Queen Elise had much of the old Traditionalists and Modernists removed from power and replaced an entirely new Faction, the Absolutists. When Confronted by a petition of Breton and French nobles for a return to the old order, Queen Elise famously stated "L'Etat c'est Moi" translating roughly to "I am the State" and threatened to have them put to death for treason. With the Military firmly behind the Young queen, the nobility backed down and Queen Elise went forward with her plans to make the Celtic Empire the dominant naval power in Europe.

5nYThsX.png

With France reforming into an Absolutist state, Kaiser Heinrich put several of his own reforms into practice in Austria. Previously legal and diplomatic reforms had been passed and always referred to the Emperor as if the electorate had the power to displace Austria should it choose too. Heinrich changed that, with majority support he officially declared that House Anniona held legal rights to tax the Imperial states a small reparation for years of service defending the Empire and administering Europe. While vastly unpopular in the free cities and more liberal states, those that held an Anniona has head of state wholeheartedly supported the reform, and with a mixture of threats, bribes and promises the remaining neutral princes voted for the reform, setting forth a dangerous precedent for the Imperial Electorate.

Though the Competition between the members of the Holy league only continued. Weeks later Queen Elise had the Danish fleet, (Previously the largest in the world) Shattered outside of Sealand, marking the end of the Old balance of Power in Europe.
ljuJ11j.png

The Sun Emperor, ruler of the Holy Roman Emperor... That is an impressive title. For someone not expected to rule, he seems to be doing an excellent job of it.

Interesting that Cordoba is dominating Australia. They got weakened in Europe thanks to Spain, so they could potentially end up with Australia as their only territory, if things go poorly in the mainland.

France's Pirate Queen is just awesome. The reborn French kingdom is already proving to be a potential threat to the HRE. Is Europe big enough for so many powerhouses?

New Anglia has pretty much destroyed the Great Lake Confederation, making the three-way war between them and Knights Transient. The knights need to start expanding if they want to compete.

So long as Elise doesn't kiss any blue hedgehogs we should be fine. If/when you fight France it should be a worthy adversary!
I feel ashamed that I understood that reference. That game still gives me night terrors.

Chapter 23: Power Absolute
5qZO59E.png

With the Electorate once again standing in line and the Emperor's power rising once more Heinrich passed several more reforms. The reforms were set to target many of the old established institutions for deferring rule to the lower classes, Merchant Guilds, Local assemblies and even some of the remaining nobility. Officially all political power in Austria now came from the Head of State. The other branches of Austrian government were reformed and an official constitution was written, establishing the powers of the various enforcement arms of the monarch's power.

8j3LfFx.png

The Monarch under Heinrich's government would remain head of state, obviously. Under the Monarch there was the Reichsrat who would officially be given powers of enforcement and law in the Empire as well as serve as the Imperial council for the Kaiser who's approval was needed for any actions passed by the Reichsrat. The Reichsrat was consisted of the Austrian Chancellor, Seven appointed representatives from the electorate and 13 Kaiser appointed provincial governors, usually from the nobility. Underneath the Reichsrat was the House of Lords, Governors and Merchant Councillors who existed solely as a bureaucratic branch to alert the Reichsrat and Monarchy of events in the provinces, and enforce acts passed by the Kaiser. These representatives would be sent by the Austrian provinces, The House of Governors consisted of representatives from Austria's overseas territories, The House of Lords from the Nobility and clergy of that still ruled the Austrian provinces and finally the Merchant council, a collection of representatives from the Austrian cities mostly, along the mediterranean.

8shlGKN.png

The new system immediately had results, due to the now direct line of communication from the Merchant classes to the Imperial government foreign investors had proposed to the Reichsfrat to improve textile production throughout the urbanizing areas of upper Austria. The Nobility have long been an obstacle in this region and an urbanized populace was more difficult to control, Now however the decision had fallen solely to the Kaiser, who approved the venture and provided some of his own funds to aid development along.

h9Cjtsn.png

As it had turned out, This would be a wise investment as later Kaiser Heinrich and Queen Elisa of France signed an agreement formally supporting terms of conduct for warfare. Namely this regarded the treatment of civilian populations but also extended to outlawing the use of flying false flags at sea, and to limit amounts of friendly fire establishing official army uniforms for Austrian and Breton soldiers. The agreement would later be signed by many Imperial Princes, and the Czar of Russia. Breton Soldiers adopted the traditional french blue coat, Austrians adopted Red and White and the Russians of course settled for a Bright Green, allowing finally a proper system of recognition between armies on the battlefield.

hnBXFKZ.png

Proper uniforms would precede proper army reform, as the teachings of Gustav Adolfus, an army instruction working for the Anniona's in Sweden had led to Sweden's success against the Norwegians, Danish and Russians on several occasions. Further enhancing European infantry tactics since many of Adolfus's reformed favored infantrymen over Cavalry and Cannon both of which sweden tended to lack.

7SWzzWc.png

Heinrich's final reform would be the establishment of a National bank. Under pressure from the Merchant council the Imperial Minting and Banking act was passed, establishing that 30% of all income from the Austrian metal mines as Tirol and Kosovo (as well as colonial mines) would go into a Minting system for Austrian currency, handled by a new National bank run by appointed officials from the Reichsfrat, enabling government loans to be more easily handed out and managed. The Bank was officially not a state institution and actually owned by House Anniona itself, but almost all employees and all government offices regulating the bank were.

qztUx7B.png

A Year later Kaiser Heinreich, now old beyond his years would pass leaving the Throne to his capable daughter Princess Gisela who was elected Empress shortly after. Gisela had her own plans for the Empire, with most affairs settled in Europe, and France and Russia enforcing an uneasy peace, Gisela planned to look outwards, once more to Austria's colonial empire in America and the untouched Spice Islands.
lx6qIQu.png

And of course Japan.

More fantastic reforms for the HRE. They already seem to be paying off, hopefully appeasing those upset with the changes. Empress Gisela II has some big shoes to fill, but her intentions to look outside of Europe is good to hear. More colonies mean more resources and wealth.

I see things aren't going smoothly in Japan. Great news for you, not so much for the locals.

Chapter 24: Adventures in the Orient
uPD0qMP.png

Civil War had erupted across the Orient. Western Influences, namely from Portuguese and Austrian sailors had introduced christianity to the Japanese Home Islands. Catholicism spread just as it had in Europe, though adapted to japanese Sensibilities. Eventually the Emperor himself converted, sparking a Civil War that thrust the struggling Empire back into the dark ages of Sengoku.

sSFYAya.png

Meanwhile Empress Gisela continued to advance austria's own Imperial Ambitions in the spice Islands. The Phillipines had been colonized by the Exiled Sultan of Ternate Island. When the Cordobans and Portuguese arrived in the region nearly a century beforehand they had Islands throughout Indonesia, Ternate being included amoung thier number, the Sultan escorted by a vast war fleet fled north and allied himself with the Chinese states whom had an interest in keeping europeans out of the China sea. When Austrian warships arrived in the Philippines claiming the land for the Empress the loose Coalition of Natives mobilized.

middle_1296360750.jpg

And were utterly Slaughtered.

The Modern Imperial Navy was miles ahead in technology than their Chinese counterparts. The Chinese who still had clung to old traditional boarding tactics met the full fury of an modern European fleet. The Osterhild-Maria, Austria's pacific flagship encountered the Chinese outside Manilla harbor and in a swift naval action eviscerated the Ternatian and Chinese fleets, sending them to the sea bottom, or scattering them into the wind.

01Gsd6m.png

Austrian Marines then invaded Manilla itself, capturing or killing nearly twelve thousand of the Sultan's men in exchange for nearly 900 Austrians. Most of which were lost when an overconfident naval officer led his detachment into a contingent of Ternatian Fireships laying in wait in another area of the harbor.

2FojxDB.png

With the Sultan captured not long after, Executor Ermenegildo PolyKarpos (A Greek man by Birth) drew out terms for the cession of southern Ternatia to Austria, as well as accommodations for supplies to repair and resupply the Austrian fleet for further conquests up north.
sxp4vlj.png

Meanwhile, events were conspiring at home for major upheaval in Austria itself. With Bohemia having been formally stripped of their Elector title for following protestantism, and many of the nobility still practicing Heretical faiths in secret, with promises of the Kaiser's protection the formal integration of the Kingdom into the Austrian administration had been slowed indefinitely. An aspiring inquisitor, a man named Melchior Klesl had proposed an alternative however.

200px-Cardinal_Klesl.jpg

Melchior was a skilled member of the Church, and a devote counter revolutionary. Originally making a career in Peru, bringing Christianity to the heathen, Melchior took ill during travel to Guyana to oversea deliveries of Church supplies and took ill with Malaria. Through apparently Prayer alone Melchior had regained his health and continued his duties, his story earning friends within the church and a promotion and new assignment in Austria.

Melchior's proposal was simple, allow the Bohemian Nobility to practice in secret and he alone would head a private inquisition arm within Austria to root out openly heretical nobles and allow them to repent. Seeing a fair compromise Empress Gisela II abided Klesl and formally began procedures to Merge the Bohemian and Austrian crowns once more.

4nmUVfF.jpg

When chaos of integration finally settled, the crown of Bohemia was symbolically brought into Vienna, marking the end of the formal Independence of Bohemia, a Kingdom that had been forged by Pagan warlords while Austria was still a humble marchland of Bavaria.

G6YjDWx.png

Klesl's Inquisition produced unprecedented results, For his success he was formally promoted to Cardinal and officially had to leave his duties in Bohemia. Gisela not wanting good work to go to waste reorganized the Bohemian Inquisition into a more state run intelligence Agency, in charge of handling matters of Unrest throughout the empire, and to serve as a check to the growing Espionage programs of the Greeks and Danish.

s0lZdGS.png

Meanwhile in Asia, Japan's enemies only grew. The Koreans, who had previously been weakened by Japanese Daimyo's in the past had officially executed several catholic missionaries, banned Japanese and Europeans from their ports, as well as announcing a formal alliance with the Kingdom of Wu as well as the Manchu to the North with intent to drive the Japanese from the continent and end Western influence in China.

cOiibOz.png

Executor Polykarpos had his own plans however. Having no manpower to challenge the Koreans the Austrian command decided instead on Japan to make his landing. After a formal meeting with Ouchi Sorin, a devout Catholic and Rival of the reactionary Otomo clan. Austrian ships and marines were given safe docking at the Ouchi capital at Hiroshima and the two men had a brief discussion as for the future of Japan.

250px-Meisho_of_Japan.jpg

The Japanese Empress Meishō was an Otomo hostage. When the dawn of a second warring states period was declared the Otomo seized Kyoto, declaring a shinto member of the Imperial family the true Emperor. Empress Meishō however was kept as a hostage to prevent an attack by the Ouchi or the Takeda Shogunate to the north. The Otomo hoped to keep control of the capital, long enough to inspire Shinto rebels to overthrow the Takeda and Ouchi, which they were in the process of doing so, until the Austrian fleet arrived.

oliver_cromwell_by_samuel_cooper-1656-national-portrait-gallery.jpg

Executor Polykarpos, had no care if the Otomo executed the Imperial family, as he had orders simply to ensure that Japanese catholics themselves would be allowed to re-assert control of the Empire. Polykarpos had lived almost his entire life at sea, being a relative of the Breton Diplomat, Thomas Cromwell and a descendant of the prestigious Polykarpos merchant family, Polykaros used his lineage and skill serving as a sailor to serve as a commander under Pirate Queen Elise. Upon the Warrior Queen's ascension Polykarpos found himself floating about between european courts, not being hired by any because of his reputation as a pirate in an era when many nations were now moving further and further towards proper commissioned sailors and standing navies and away from such Mercenary and unreliably captains.

KQsbsCg.png

Eventually he drew the interest of Empress Gisela II to lead an expedition of Austrian Warships into the Orient was formally added to the short list of potential recruits. Karpos who was eventually chosen, agreed to lead the expedition on several conditions, namely He would answer only to the Empress, be paid substantially for his service and he would not allow Breton interests to be harmed in any way on his mission. Empress Gisella wholeheartedly agreed, giving Karpos fifty Ships as well as the Osterhild-Maria a massive ship of the line sporting over 70 guns, one of the first of a new warship design being pioneered by the Bretons, Austrians and Danish.

Victory.jpg

Polykarpos landed in Kyoto a week later, leading Austrian marines to the Chrysanthemum throne, killing the Otomo pretender, and seizing control of the city. Empress Meisho was surprisingly left unharmed, Otomo as it seemed were too confused over who was attacking to know if their hostage was of any use. Polykarpos decided it best to take the Empress rather than kill her or return her to the japanese and ship her away, back to Austria. Afterwards he declared Martial law and seized previously Otomo territories. With the Austrians holding the remaining members of the Imperial family hostage many now bowed to Polykarpos, who assumed duties as Lord-Regent of Japan until further orders from Empress Gisela arrived.

8z13mNJ.png

The Orders eventually would arrive. Gisela, Overjoyed at the news of such success had begun making arrangements for another Imperial marriage to repeat the success of the Incan campaigns. Polykarpos' was appointed Lord-Regent of Japan for life, with simple orders.

To Subjugate the Rest of Japan and unite the Empires of the Rising, and Setting sun.

Farewell Bohemia. Your annexation makes Austria even stronger. Nice to see more accepted cultures too. How many are accepted in the HRE?

A good foothold has been established in Japan, and the Empress wants more. Subjugating all of Japan under Austria would be quite impressive and very helpful.

So is this like an alternate universe where Japan isn't run on completely absolute agnatic primogeniture?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empress_Meishō

Completely Historical Empress actually. Though the actual political situation is obviously different since Takeda unified and later christianized Japan, not Nobunaga. Your thinking of the Shogunate which was 100% Agnatic as far as i remember.

Chapter 25: The Coming Storm
Dejima_arnoldus_montanus_1669.jpg

Unlike the subjugation of the Aztecs and Inca in America the capture of the Japanese Emperor was not kindly seen in Europe. The Chinese and Malaysians were valuable trading partners with the Portuguese, Cordobans and Spanish who decided it best to make great issue. However while Empress Gisela diffused a potential coalition at home Lord-Regent Polykarpos continued his wars of subjugation against the Japanese people. First the Lord regent set about securing the valuable port of Nagasaki, setting up Fort Orient, the first European constructed base in Japan. Step one in a greater campaign to secure the entire Island of Kyushu.

eJfshhq.png

The Ouchi, who has secured much of western Japan fell to the Austrians through a combination of force and arranged marriages with distant Annionan family members to incentivise local support for the new Regime. The Austrians were orderly, had superior weapons and brought order to the previously chaotic lands of the second Sengoku. Though Austrian influence came at a price, The Pacific fleet had effectively patrolled the sea of Japan to the point where trade in the region ceased.

9Hif3gG.jpg

The Manchu were the hardest effected, as they had grown increasingly reliant on Portuguese and Cordoban arms merchants to supply weapons and silver against the Mongolians and Chinese. When silver stopped flowing the Manchu found themselves at war with the Mongolians, facing descent at home and an empty treasury. Though Austria could not properly intervene to benefit itself as Japan was drawing more and more resources, the Mongolians had no such difficulties and struck, hard and fast.

7eaTBXM.png

Lord-Regent Polykarpos was not the only skilled member working for Empress Gisela. The Empress had surrounded herself with a Grand Council, rivaling the old Councils of Milan and Vienna that led to the foundation and reform of the Holy Roman Empire. The Reichsfrat had become a center for some of the most talented and educated minds in Europe, having fled to Austria to escape warfare in Germany, France, Spain and the Orient. With such powerful men and women around her Empress Gisela put forward yet another reform to the Imperial Electorate.

Gvbbv3E.png

The Emperor, has for some time now been the Final legal authority throughout the Empire, mediating disputes between the Princes and using such authority to enforce the counter reformation and religious unity throughout the nation. It was only natural that a Kaiser would extend these rights further, Forbidding warfare entirely, as after all wars were messy and bloody affairs, bad for business in the free cities, bad for the help of the nobility and bad for the integrity of the church. Gisela called a Diet at Zagreb and brought forward these points, Disputes between the princes would no longer be settled by force of arms, but by the Imperial courts, with the Empress as the final arbiter.

Lyy3lbB.png

With Wars finally forbidden and the protestant reformation only a bitter memory, the Church passed several of their own reforms, relaxing control of the clergy once more allowing more and more authority to flow from the state than from rome. The Counter-Reformation had ended, the time for Fanaticism was finally over.

81Eqzgq.png

News of success in Austria had arrived in Japan with a fresh batallion of Imperial soldiers, as well as another twenty warships. With Empress Meisho an honored guest at Vienna awaiting a marriage, Gisela II announced the Japanese Shogunate was no more than an illegal military dictatorship not unlike such regimes that has risen in the Italian republics in the past. A military dictatorship so unstable that it threatened the safety of catholics within Japan. Therefore Austria had every right to subjugate the remains of Japan and return the rightful empress to power.

e0NjVnu.png

Lord-Regent Polykarpos however did not have the manpower or the local collaboration to secure the entirely of the Island just yet. The Austrian nobility after all was ignorant of Japanese culture or tradition and news of the declaration was suppressed for fear of inciting revolts of the subjugated provinces.

Instead Polykarpos insisted the Takeda shogun had abandoned his duties, Polykarpos presenting his own thin claim to the title after having taken a Oda bride. The Takeda naturally denied such claims but were unable to stop the Austrian seizure of Edo and Kyoto Provinces, further weakening Japanese faith in the Takeda who had been humiliated time and again by the Lord-Regent.

IUC3knO.jpg

Back in Austria the end to Internal wars had freed up a large section of the Imperial bureaucracy to now focus on further advancing Austrian infrastructure. Due to such successes of the Gisela's Council the Empress invested nearly half the Austrian treasury on a university building project, spanning the entire northern half of the country and parts of Croatia. Austria was slow to such projects however, the Byzantines who were enjoying their own age of prosperity from conquests in the middle east though this advancement came at a price.

Q2UHtR4.png

The Byzantines, had hosted a large intellectual class, one of the largest in the world. The Theme system had long since been reformed since the days of the military rule in the 1500's. Where the Celtics and Austrians had taken a road down into absolutism, the elective traditions of Byzantium had allowed a different government form to prosper.

The Themes, had long been controlled by the Greek Military, however the Greek military to better compete with Russia and Iraq reformed to match European systems, which included allowing Merchant and Commoners to hold high ranking positions, provided they met requirements. As the Merchant class grew in influence and the greek populace became more and more educated, demand for reform started to rise dramatically

The Basileus, rather than facing a potential all out civil war between the Military, Merchants and Nobility. Drafted a new Greek constitution, named "The Verba compromissum". Power was formally separated between three Branches, The Imperial branch, The Legislative branch and Judicial. The Legislative branch was then split between the Imperial Senate which consisted of Nobles and the House of Themes, which was comprised of elected officials serving for life. The Judicial branch consisted of Judges appointed by the Emperor and Imperial senate to arbitrate conflicts within the government, people and legislation. The Legislative and Imperial branches worked as a team, the Legislative working to create and modify laws to bring to the Emperor to be approved. The Emperor would then use the Military or other Imperial officials to Enforce laws. A new form of government known as the Constitutional Monarchy, a Monarchy where power was formally separated between branches of government to allow the greater whole to function more in the people's best interest.

7eaDyU2.png

A Strange development, all things considered as the Anniona-Bretagne house, was also the host of one of the most absolutist monarchies in the world and one of the most liberal. Sitting on both Byzantine and French thrones the Celtic Branch of house Anniona had grown to be quite strange. Though what was even stranger was Queen Elise's eccentric firstborn, Louis

LouisXIV.jpg

.
Louis had inherited much of his mother's skill at sea, at court and in battle but lacked actual interest for any of these things, instead Louis had desired to focus on his empire's internal developments, though his lack of skill and familiarity meant Louis really just ended up spending thousands out of the Celtic treasury on vanity projects, such as a secondary residence for the Royal family at Versailles.
PATEL-230A.jpg

The Palace of course was nothing to scoff at. King Louis sparring absolutely no expense in its construction. The Grounds and building themselves were a work of art, with even more valuable sculptures, artwork and valuable materials being hoarded in the many rooms of the royal estate. While the Anniona's of Greece had seen their imperial power slowly slipping away, in the Celtic Union absolutism was in full swing.

In contrast the Russians had spent the century strangely quiet in comparison. Busy with war after costly war in Siberia the Russians had adopted their own brand of absolutism in silence, growing more and more isolated from European politics. With the announcement of the Diet at Zagreb this policy changed. The Russians had already been eclipsed by the Byzantines to the south and had been contained in the steppe. With the Austrian ban on wars within the empire, the writing had appeared on the wall, Russia had become the weakest member of the Holy alliance, behind both France and Austria. Desperate measures had become the only option to keep Austria from eclipsing Russia once more. The council of Zagreb specifically would need to be overturned but when Kaiserine Gisela refused, the Russians proceed with their last remaining option and cut off all diplomatic ties.

qCRNR6i.png

They Invaded the Empire merely a week later.

Things seem to be going smoothly in Japan, and the newest reform is wonderful news for the HRE. This war with Russia, on the other hand, is worrying. Russia has an impressive army, and are desperate to win.

The Byzantine Empire adapting a Constitutional Monarchy is an interesting development. I wonder if they'll regret this decision down the line.

Well aside the mass purges of Heretics. The Widespread practice of Slavery in America due to such heavy colonization of Africa. And Of Course Asia is an absolute mess.

Chapter 26: The War of Five Emperors
xdLKa07.png

With war no unavoidable the Major players of Austria and Russia called their respective allies to the stage. The French Empire immediatly came to the Aid of Austria when Russian threats to treat Austria as the primary party in the war were made, Followed by the Papal State and various electors allied to Kaiserine Gisela. In Response the Russians called the Swedish into the growing conflict and made moves over the Carpathians to threaten Austrian soil.

The Bulgarians initially stood on the fence, until they too ultimately decided to side with the Russians. Not a month after the entry of Sweden the Kingdom of Bulgaria declared themselves the Rightful Kaiser and joined the Russians. Making the total of Emperors now fighting in the war to be four, France, Russia, Austria and Bulgaria.

bkBB1Wg.png

The Bulgarians rushed to reinforce the Russian army of Carpathia and met the 1st French legion outside budapest. Outnumbered nearly two to one the French fought bravely but ultimately were forced to retreat. Austria who still had large portions of her army tied up in colonies in America or in Asia had only a meager defensive force to defend Imperial soil with. Since the defeat of the French Austria had to abandon the northern and Eastern parts of the Empire, focusing more on defending Serbia and Croatia from potential russian assault.

46OMH2r.png

With War raging across the Empire the aging Gisela II passed, not in battle but of illness in her bed in Vienna. The Electorate quickly moved to elect her daughter, the crown Princess Irmeltrud to the throne, who upon her coronation delivered a speech promising Austrian leadership would lead the Empire through it's darkest hour. With Morale high behind the new Empress the newly trained and equipped Army of the Danube reached Serbia and prepared to finally push the Russians and Bulgarians out.

MsylVrK.png

First the Army struck Kosovo, where Austrian General Bodan Ake made liberal use of the Austrian advantage of numbers to end the occupation and restore the valuable mints of the region back to Austrian control. With a vital income stream once again safe, Bodan set the army of the Danube on a march out of Kosovo and into the city of Rashka which was being held by the Russians.

Uot2UrV.png

Bodan Ake was not the most talented general on the Field during the late 17th century. By all accounts he was a mediocre commander for his time. A Gentlemen off the field and merely competent on it to advance his position he had won large amounts of favor in the Austrian court. Polykarpos, Austria's finest military mind was still ruling in Japan, which left the door open for many lesser generals to compete against one another to become the Supreme commander. Mats Binhilde, a less competent commander by many accounts actually won the position from Ake in the later half of the war, namely due to his better treatment of the occupied russian populace.

310px-Georg-Hessen-Darmstadt.jpg

Still Bodan Ake despite his shortcomings commanded the Austrian army long enough and exploited Austria's superior cannonry to great effect in Serbia, ensuring that the brief Russian occupation of serbia would be just that, Brief. Though the opportunity came multiple times to defect to the Bulgarians, Ake stayed loyal and continued to stall for the Colonial Garrison, and French Reinforcements. Though the French ultimately would what would turn the war around when they returned.

SDnGiv6.png

Ake met the slavics once again in Raskha coming off a string of victories against the bulgarians in Carpathia. Here however the French had returned and the General Rene de Saint Espirit met with the Bulgarian-Russian Supreme commander Adalbero Faroald a man renowned for his tactical genius, specifically in regards to logistics, and cavalry. Though without the proper men and supplies in the Austrian countryside he found himself outnumbered. When Rene de Saint Espirit arrived in Rashka things turned worse.

General Rene was a master of a different school of thought, where in Russia, emphasis was given on maneuvering and making full use of Cavalry in France the Infantryman and Cannon were favored. Horses had become increasingly irrelevant in French Battle doctrine as metal was more of an abundant commodity for French Cannon. Years of proud naval tradition had also meant that French Cannons were more accurate and lighter than equivalent guns in Europe allowing greater flexibility. Specifically Rene's armies in Serbia at this time consisted of mainly repurposed Naval guns set atop the various hills in the Rashka region, which were used to great effect to disrupt enemy lines to dramatic effect.

Meanwhile another military leader was gaining ground in Carpathia. Defeated in Serbia, the Bulgarian commander Adalbero returned to Carpathia at the head of yet another army, this time with intent to move on Austria itself and further buy time for the Russians to lay siege to Spis as well as fight the minor partners of the war in Bulgaria and Poland. However this time the Bulgarian general met none other than the Holy father Constantius himself honoring his obligation as a member of the holy alliance, and leading an group of French, Austrian and Papal troops against the Bulgarians.

Much like Rene, Pope Constantinus favored a fire doctrine in his approach and though Papal and Austrian cannons did not have quite the same effect as French ones, the shear volume of fire from allied forces eventually scattered the Russian lines, leaving their own artillery exposed to cavalry and infantry fire. Several full battalions worth of Cannon were captured and destroyed, and nearly twice that amount were run down by Austrian and French Cavalry in the chaos of the Russian retreat.

Pope Constantinus was a bit of an oddity. Originally born Franz Ermengol to a minor noble family in Holstein, Constantinus had willingly joined the Knights Templar branch in Bremen at an early age. Trained mainly as a military advisor Constantinus was hired by various Italian princes throughout the empire. The Templar Order however quickly had grown out of favor when templar banking operations began to threaten the new national banks of the Italian states. To continue his work, Constantinus requested his Status as a member of the church be changed, from Templar to Priest. After going through the necessary education Constantinus never returned to work as a military advisor and instead stayed, in rome, acting as a personal advisor to three popes, climbing the ranks of the church as he did so. Familiar with the politics of Rome and having made many friends over a long career it was unsurprisingly he would make it to the Papacy. Though when the call to Join Austria in war against the Russians was issued, Constantinus did not hesitate and led the Papal army, personally to honor the Holy League.

The Great Generals of Constantinus and Rene de Saint Esprit eventually were forced to take a backseat, as the Russians became increasingly drained on manpower. Politics dictated that Austria would lead the war and so General Mats Bindhilde was appointed, Supreme Commander of Holy League armies outside of Carpathia. Which of course really referred only to the Bulgarian siege garrisons and Bindhldes army in Crimea being used mainly to harass and threaten the russians on thier own soil.

The Russians of course refused simple overtures of peace, Their prestige as an empire demanded victory, despite victory now becoming more and more of a Fantasy for the Eastern Alliance. Though the Russians did find some glimmer of hope, as a Comet had appeared in the sky above Europe and was taken as a grim omen by many. Though the Russians perhaps were searching for what little morale they could hope to build. The True Purpose of such a comet would be revealed however, The fifth empire was about to join.

Sensing Weakness the Byzantines had been sitting on the sidelines of the war for some time. The Greeks could of course swing the way in any direction they so chose, but were wary, namely of Austrian and Breton Naval strength which could cut the empire in Two, stop all trade and threaten to throw the empire into economic collapse. The Russians as well were an option, a fierce rival of the Greeks since Ruthenia originally laid claim to the Imperial title of Caesar the only thing stopping the greeks from an invasion of the Crimea was of lack of intrest, as the lands of Russia were as a whole mostly useless, barren wastelands in comparison to the more developed greek empire. Eventually though with Russia refusing peacedeals from the Austrians time and again diplomatic pressure had begun to fall on the greeks to bring peace to Europe. Not wanting to find themselves missing out on the spoils of Austria's hard fought victory the Byzantines declared, with intent to humiliate the Russians and reclaim parts of the Steppe they had previously lost.

Meanwhile Austria had its own problems forming. The War had pulled resources heavily from the Austrian colonies and the Kingdom of Africa. Africa traditionally had been a trading partner with the Russians and Bulgarians. With a war on, and Imperial taxes driving the already poor region into bankruptcy, the Populace revolted. The Rabble eventually fought through Africa's home guard and seized Tunis, declaring a republic free from Anniona oppression. Austria, still busy with the Russians could do nothing but watch africa go.

Inspired by the Africans, Slaves in America as decided now would be the time to grasp for freeedom independence and revolted free of thier dutch overlords. The Slaves joined with disgruntled merchants and enlightenment thinkers to declare a new Federal republic, one that aspired to unite the Americas and become a superpower. Though the Geopolitical situation may have rendered such a dream impossible as this new American state was still orders of magnitude weaker than both the Knight's Transient and New Anglia.

With the Birth of America, the slavery question once more arose in Austria's court. The Colonies of Guyana and Kolonia, were already more distant from Austria. Slave revolts could become the Catalyst into a full scale rebellion just as they had in the Flemish colonies. Though the debate raged back and forth, ultimately it was decidied, in order to offset the growing desire for independence of the ruling colonial elites slavery would henceforth be abolished. This would mean adding potentially thousands of Loyal austrians into the colonies, as citizens, something that can push the question of American independent into the future, for a time the Imperial army wasn't busy with Russia.

Though the war in fact did not continue to rage, a year after the declaration of Austrian absolution the Russians surrendered to the holy league, mainly to focus on Byzantium who was making huge gains across the steppelands. Overall Russia barely lost any land, and was allowed to remain relatively intact, though her failure to stop Austria had become apparent, he prestige shattered and any hope of Austria being unseated as Emperor had finally drifted away.

In fact the Bulgarian casus belli had become the Final straw. Austria had done nothing but help, and protect the Various imperial princes. Now when the Empire needed to be unified most, the Bulgarians had stabbed the Empress, and their fellow princes in the back in demanding the Throne from a rightfully elected Empress. Thus the Authority of the Electorate had evaporated in only a decade, meanwhile House Anniona had proven to be loyal, and had won its birthright. Empress Irmeltrud delivered a speech at the Diet of Nuremberg a peace conference within the empire held shortly after the Russian surrender condemning the actions of Bulgaria. The electorate system had originally been proposed to stop civil wars and curtail austrian power. In reality it failed in both these respects, The System had failed to stop civil wars, which only grew in frequency since its adoption, and it also had failed to curtail Austria's power only threaten the integrity of the Empire as a whole as the Powerful Empires of Russia, Byzantium and France grew unopposed while the Empire continued to languish as a decentralized state. With Bulgaria now having been defeated, any faith left in the aging system had was gone and a more tried and true Method would replace it, Primogeniture.

The Electorate was no more, House Anniona was here to stay.

Long live the Kaiserin! Long live House Anniona!
Lang lebe die Kaiserin!
Lang lebe Haus Anniona!
Lang lebe das Erbkaisertum!

Things look bleak for Russia now, given how those wars went for them. Will they manage to get things back under control, be conquered by one of the existing powers in Europe, or will sia take advantage of the situation?

Africa must be punished for their betrayal. Just like Germany before them, Africa will learn what happens to those that wrong the HRE!

The USA has been born! Given their position, I doubt they'll last long. Still, their existence did cause the abolition of slavery. A joyous day for equality.

The HRE is back to using Primogeniture succession. It's a wonderful day! Hats off to Empress Irmeltrud.
