jwolf, thanks man! Yap, the White Lotus event hit me in early 1622. Erm, actually the 3 marshals won't be doing much about. They will be too busy trying to survive what is coming next. Oh well, you will find out about it soon enough. :D

rafjorbro, thanks for reading! Don't feel too sorry for the Manchus. They will soon prove to be a very tough challenge, very very tough challenge.

Merrick, glad to see you checking in! For now my picture sources come from one TV series and a movie. The TV series is a Hong Kong cantonese serial called "Step into the Past". Sounds familiar? :D The other source comes from a Chinese movie "1661, Sino-Dutch War". I still got a few other sources but so far they are not needed yet for now.

I've just read your recent chapter and I must say, a very good update Red Wolf! I am looking forward to see what happens next and I do have a question. Do you think you will encounter The Europeans later? The Portuguese, The Dutch, The Spanish etc? That would be interesting and if so, would you invade any of their colonies or trading posts? Also, would you have any information on the film "1661, Sino-Dutch War"? I've never heard of it but I would be interested in looking into it. Anyway, good update and I look forward ot the next part.

Nice to see that you gave those manchus a whipping! :D that will show those buggers.

Your last paragraph however, tells of a dark future ahead for china and our three marshals, let us hope they survive it ;)

Ksim3000, yes the portugese have already shown up and holding on one of my provinces thanks to one of the game events. The Dutch also showed up later taking Taiwan from me, something I was not please about cause I have plans for Taiwan. But yes, once I clear the revolts, I do have some ideas with the Europeans thought whether they will be played out will be a different story. Anyway, so far I have only played up to 1655.

With regards to the Sino Dutch War, basically it was the invasion of Taiwan by the Armies of the Ming Dynasty. With most of their territory lost and whatever territory they have left being slowly chipped away by the Manchu, the remaining Ming Armies invaded Taiwan, which was occupied by the Dutch at that moment so they will have a place of refuge which will be protected by their powerful fleets which is more than a match for the Manchu fleet then.

Anyway, below are a couple of websites with reviews of the movie.

TreizeV, the 3 Marshals and their sons are soon to go through some exciting times. I think you will like what I will write next

Prince TianQi seizes the Dragon Throne

The year is 1622. 3 years have passed since the Ming victory over the Manchu. Over these 3 years, China has continued to prospere. Several Royal Marriages has been arranged with southern states to ensure the peace across the Empire’s Southern borders. The size of the Imperial Army and Navy has continued to grown and their army now stands at twice the size of the Manchu Army. Persuaded by the 3 Marshals, China has once again decided to explore the seas once more. Volunteers have been found and 3 centuries after Admiral Zheng He’s last Great Voyage, Chinese Junks once again explore the seas.

However the Emperor Wanli grows weak with age. Having ruled since 1572, the strain of running the Empire is beginning to wear down on him. It is clear to the Empire that Wanli will not live for long. However the Crown Prince Taichang shows great promise and many predict that Taichang have the potential to be one of the Empire’s greatest Emperors and that he will bring the Empire to even greater heights. As Emperor Wanli grows ever weaker with each day, his duties have slowly been taken over by the Crown Prince and the Military Council.

On the domestic front, Wu Sangui, now aged 18 has married the daughter of Admiral Zheng a year earlier. ZiCheng, 17 had been promised YuanYuan, YaoHui’s sister’s hand in marriage once she reaches the age of 16. Both of them have joined the Imperial Guards, their father’s old unit. YaoHui, 12 has started both studies and military training. In a few years time, he will join his 2 sworn brothers in the Imperial Guards.

In late 1621, the Empire concluded a Royal Marriage with the kingdom of Assam. Marshal Chen was tasked to escort the young Princess to Assam where she will be wed. SanGui and ZiCheng were among the Imperial Guards chosen to escort the Princess to Assam.

It was while Marshal Chen was away in Assam in November 1621 that the Emperor Wanli died peacefully in his sleep. Crown Prince TaiChang was not in the Capital when his father died. Wanli’s younger brother Tianqi quickly rode out with an escort of Imperial Guards to escort Taichang back to Beijing where he will be crowned Emperor.

On January 25 1622, the Imperial Court assembled in the Forbidden Palace. Prince Tianqi had sent word that the TaiChang will arrive in the Capital that day for his coronation ceremony.

It was a very hot day. The entire court had assembled in a wide open space outside where first TaiChang will first pray to the gods for a peaceful reign before everyone will proceed into the Court for his coronation.

Firstly at the rear, are all the minor officials and burecrats. Slightly ahead of them are the various minor military commanders. After that comes the members of the Imperial Court and finally the members of the powerful Military Council, including Vice Marshals Li and Wu. Chen had yet to arrive though he was expected back later that day. At the head of everyone was the young Price Chongzhen, son of Tianqi. Like everyone he was sweating profusely as he awaited the arrival of his cousin TaiChang.

The gates of the Palace were opened and everyone fell silent as they waited for Taichang to make his entrance. But to everyone’s surprise, only the Prince TianQi walked through. Where is TaiChang and his younger brother Taili? To make matters more confusing, TianQi wore a scarf of white around, the symbol of mourning.

A buzz of conversations now started among the assembled members of the court which became quiet as TianQi reached the top of the stairs where TaiChang would make his prayers to the gods.
Then to the surprise of everyone, Tianqi went on his knees and announced,” I have failed in my duty to ensure the safety of the Emperor. Last night on the outskirts of the Capital, assassins attacked us and succeeded in murdering the Emperor TaiChang and his brother Taili.”

There was death silence for a moment as the Court tried to absorb what Prince TianQi has just said. The chaos erupted as everyone shouted questions to the Prince. Over the din of all the noises, Vice Marshal Li asked,” Do we know who the assassins are?”

With a cold look at Li, Prince TianQi said,” You dare to ask? The assassins have already confessed. It was the plot of the Military Council to murder the Emperor. With the Emperor dead, they will then be able seize control of the Empire for themselves!”

Vice Marshal Wu stepped forward, his face red with fury,” Who said this? The Military Council has longed been loyal to the Emperor and we only exist to defend the Empire from our enemies. Never have we harboured any traitorous thoughts!” Other members of the Military Council stepped forwards as well to protest Prince TianQi’s accusations.

“That’s enough! We have enough evidence to prove that it’s the work of the Council. How dare you people still dare to try to deny it” Prince TianQi retorted. Even as he finished speaking, hundreds of soldiers poured into the Palace.

“Arrest the Military Council! The Council members are herby declared traitors of the Empire!” Shouted Prince Tianqi. The soldiers quickly had the Council members arrested

As Vice Marshal Wu was being shackled, he shouted to Prince TianQi,” Do you think the Imperial Army will stand for this? Once news of this gets out, the Imperial Army will march on the Capital to rescue us.”

TianQi gave a cold smile as he replied,” No they won’t. Even now, your sub commanders are being arrested and my own loyal men are taking command of the Imperial Army. Save your breath, Wu. Guards, take them to the dungeons. I will deal with them later.”

As the Military Council was being led away, TianQi raised his hand and the Court went silent as they waited to hear what he says,” Never before in the history of the Empire have we ever lost the Emperor and his 2 heirs all in the space of a month. We are now facing a crisis of the highest magnitude. Enemies outside and within the Empire now threaten our very own survival. We need a strong Emperor to guide us now.. As younger brother of the late Emperor Wanli, I have a claim on the throne and I now asked the Court to appoint me Emperor so that I can lead the Empire against our enemies and bring her to greater heights.”

Wu and Li heard all this as they were being led away and belately they finally understood. It was TianQi who engineered all this. He had killed both TaiChang and Taili and put the blame on the Military Council, the one thing that can stop his accession to the throne. With the Military Council arrested, there was now no one to stop TianQi to claim the throne.

The rest of the Imperial Court was still undecided on what to do but the sight of more troops pouring into the Palace decided the matter for them. The Court went on their knees and declared TianQi the new Emperor.

The Imperial Court swears it loyalty to the new Emperor Tianqi

Meanwhile, Marshal Chen had just arrive back in the Capital. With him was SanGui and ZiCheng. “Uncle Chen, do you think the coronation ceremony is over yet?” asked Sangui.

Chen shook his head,” I am not sure. But anyway I got to go to the Palace to swear my loyalty to the new Emperor.” “Can we come along?” asked ZiCheng in an eager tone.

Chen laughed,” Why not? You can be my escort as I enter my Palace.” The boys cheered and laughing the 3 of them made their way to the Forbidden Palace…..

ooooo.. that Prince Tianqi really makes me sick! I personally hope that in the end he gets whats coming to him ;)

I need some help from you guys. For the purpose of my story, I need to get the Manchu capital of Hebei to shift back to Jilin. Anyone know how I can go about doing that?

Very good update Red Wolf! I did enjoy this chapter and it is interesting to see how Prince, well, Emperor Tianqi, succeeds with his plan. Will he fail? Or will he succeed? I am indeed interested. I hope Chen finds out and dosen't get captured, we do need a hero. :D

Also, I'm not sure on what to do for The Manchu I am afraid. Perhaps somebody else here knows? Also, I am looking forward on how you deal with The Portuguese and Dutch later on, that will be interesting. Show those Europeans that Asia is not their territory! :D

Thanks for giving the reviews on the film and telling me a bit about it, I do appreciate it. I will have to look around for that film and see if I can buy it, it looks interesting.

The Great Escape

Chen and the 2 boys made their way to the Forbidden Palace. After about 20 minutes of travel, they came to a chaotic scene. People were running in panic. Stores were being kept, and the streets were being emptied people ran for the safety of their houses.

“What the hell is happening? On this scene alone, I would be thinking that the Manchus are invading again.” Said a puzzled SanGui.

Chen grabbed one of the running people and asked him what is happening. “I don’t know. All we know is that something has gone wrong at the coronation ceremony and that soldiers are fighting fellow soldiers all around the city.”

The 3 of them stared at each other for a moment and then increased their pace as they headed to the Palace to find out what went wrong. They did not take long to find out. They ran into large group of Imperial Guards a couple of streets later.

The Guards commander sighed with relief when he saw Marshal Chen,” Marshal, Emperor TaiChang is dead and Prince Tianqi has seized the Dragon Throne for himself. Even now, his men are busy securing the Capital city. Many believe that Tianqi had murdered Emperor TaiChang and then put the blame on the Military Council.”

Chen gasped at the news,” What about the Military Council? Didn’t they do anything to stop him?”

“Marshal, Tianqi has declared the Military Council traitors of the Empire and arrested them and whatever people who oppose him are now being taken care of by his own men.”

“Damn that man! When I came in, the Western gate is still open. How about the rest of the gates?” Chen asked the Guards Commander.

“Marshal, last I heard is that the North and South gates have been secured by Tianqi’s men. The East gate is still being fought for by both Tianqi and Loyalists troops but we think it won’t hold for long. For now only the West Gate is still being held by Loyalist troops.”

Chen nodded and then replied,” Very well, this is what we will do. I will take half the men and rescue the Military Council members. You will take the other half and reinforce the West Gate. At all cost, hold the Gate until the Military Council has escaped. We will then head south, rally the Empire’s Southern troops and then return to take care of Tianqi.”

The Commander inclined his head in agreement and quickly led half the detachment off to reinforce the West Gate. Chen then turned to SanGui and ZiCheng,” The two of you, quickly get back to your homes and mine, gather everyone and then wait for me outside the West Gate. I will go rescue your fathers and then we will come and meet the rest of you.”

The two boys quickly rode off. Chen turned to the rest of the Guards and shouted, “To the Dungeons!”

rescuewuli.jpg

Loyal Imperial Guards heading to the Dungeons

Chen and his men encountered a couple groups of Tianqi’s men on their way to the prison but they were quickly dealt with. They quickly arrived at the Dungeons where a battle broke out as the Dungeon Guards tried to prevent the Imperial Guards from breaking in.

However, Dungeon guards are not the best troops in the Empire and they were no match for the highly skilled Imperial Guards and they were quickly overwhelmed. Chen and his men rushed into the cells and saw a horrific sight.

The members of the Military Council are being hanged in the Dungeons. Already most of the Council Members are hanging from the ceiling beam. Only 3 members remain alive, Vice Marshal Li, Vice Marshal Wu and Admiral Zheng. Even now they were being forcibly dragged to for their turn to get hanged.

Chen roared in fury and charged the remaining dungeon guards. After a brief skirmish, the guards were killed and the surviving Council members free. “Chen, Tianqi he…” Wu started to say but Chen cut him off.

“I know what has happen. We must escape now. Loyalist troops still hold the West Gate and we must get there quickly. We will then head south and bring up the Southern Troops to engage Tianqi and his men.”

Li shook his head,” No use Chen. All the sub commanders in all the Armies have been replaced by Tianqi’s lackeys. We will have no support from any of the Armies.”

Chen was silent for a moment before he replied,” The Armies are not the only fighting force in the Empire.”

“The martial arts sects?” asked Wu.

“Yes. If all the sects unite, we will have a significant fighting force.”

“And how do intend to get the support of the various sects? The sects have not fought as a united force since the overthrow of the Yuan Dynasty.”

Chen smiled,” Wu, didn’t you learn your fighting skills from the Bai Lian Jiao (White Lotus Sect)? And if I recall correctly, your younger brother still serves in the sect.”

“Yes, that’s right. My younger brother is a Elder in the sect.” replied Wu.

“The martial arts sects are dominated by the 5 Major Sects of which the White Lotus Sect is predominant. Should the White Lotus Sect issue the call to arms, and if the other 4 Major Sects support the White Lotus Sect as well, the other sects will fall in line behind them. Then we have our army.”

Li and Wu looked at each other. Wu commented,” This might just work.”

“We can discuss our plans later. For now we must get out of the City.”

The 3 of them quickly made their way to the West Gate and they could hear the sounds of fighting as they neared the West Gate.

The West Gate came into view and indeed Tianqi’s men were locked in fierce combat with loyal Imperial Guards. The senior Imperial Guard with Chen said to Chen,” Marshals, we will go in and reinforce our comrades while the 3 of you make a run for it. Don’t bother about us. If the Empire is to be saved, then the 3 of you must survive.”

Chen could not say anything. In the end, he could only gasped the man’s hand. The Guard nodded in understanding and then he and his men charged into the battle.

“Here’s our chance, let’s go!” Chen and his brothers dashed out and made for the gate. Loyalist Guards doubled their efforts as they opened a way for the 3 Marshals to get through.

They quickly got through the gate and the gates slammed shut behind them. The Loyalist Guards intend to die in the City to buy more time for the 3 Marshals.

Chen turned back to face the city, tears in his eyes,” Those are brave men. I swear before heaven that I will avenge these brave men!” before he continued on his way.

The 3 of them met up with their families and family guards a short distance away and there was an emotional scene as the families were reunited before continuing on their way.

They had barely ridden for a couple of hours when behind them, they could hear galloping horses behind them. Tianqi has sent his men after the Marshals!

Chen looked around. There was no way that they could outrun Tianqi’s men. Wang, commander of Chen’s family guards came up to Chen,” Master, you and the other marshals go first. We will buy you the time to escape.” Chen could feel the tears coming down his face. For the second time in a day, men are prepared to sacrifice their lives to save him and his family members. One day, Chen swear, he will avenge these men.

“Master stop wasting time. You must leave now! GO!” Wang urged Chen.

Chen nodded and the 3 families quickly continued their escape south.

Wang turned back with the rest of his men as they awaited Tianqi’s men. They arrived shortly later and a brief battle was fought as Wang and his men sought to buy enough time for their masters with their lives.

Mingtianqi1.jpg

Wang buy time for the 3 families with his life

As Wang lay dying on the ground later, he smiled. He died with no regrets because he knew with his death, he buys the life of his master and that was enough for him.

Back in the Forbidden Palace, the newly crowned Tianqi proclaimed to the Empire,” Let it be known to the world that Tianqi, brother of the late Emperor Wanli is now the new Emperor of the Ming Empire. Anyone who refuses to accept my authority will be declared traitor and his punishment will be death!”

A couple of months later, the first rebellions broke out…..

Is it at this point in the game where all the rebellions break out in China? If so, this is an excellent portrayal as to WHY that happened. Great updates, RW! Very well written and the interactions between the characters makes me really believe them.

Yap, as a matter of fact, this is when the White Lotus Cult event hit me and all hell broke loose for me in China. Glad you like my own portrayal of the event!

Does this mean we will get some pictures of martial artists fighting one another - ninja's are cool (or are those japanese?) :D Had to catch up on a few updates and you are developing this very well, especially the siezure of the dragon throne.

Wow this is a really good plot! There should be a movie made on this because i would watch it for sure :D.

Very good RedWolf! I did enjoy the latest chapter! It is a shame The Loyalist and Wang's men had to sacrafice themselves, indeed they were very brave. Still, they knew what they had to do and The Marshals and their families have been able to escape. Very good, I am enjoying this magnificent tale and I wonder what will happen with The White Lotus? Anyway, update soon.

Farquharson, glad that I tempted you to try but i warn you, once the revolts starts, you are in for the long haul. My govenment already fell twice because I could not handle the series of revolts but of course, that will be explained in the story later.

Ksim3000, nice to know you are still reading but I've got to inform you there will likely not be a update, at least not till May 3rd cause this is my exam week and I have very limited time to write. But rest assured that I will do my best to finish this tale.

TreizeV, if you think this plot is good, then you should read some of the books written by Louis Cha. His stories are some of the best that I have ever come across. The plot that I am doing is a little similiar to one of his stories "Dragon Sword and Heaven Sabre" which tells of how the Ming Sect united the rest of the Chinese martial sects to overthrow the Yuan mongols and establish the Ming Dynasty. I am not sure if there's an english translation of the story but I do know a english comic series has been made on it and I've been told it's very good. You might wanna check it out.

coz1, actually I have not thought about it but since you mentioned it, I jolly well might just do a post about the marshals unite the sects. Expect pictures of some martial arts fighting and yes, ninjas are from Japan not China. :)

The Gathering Storm

Former Marshal Chen RongCai finished what he had to say. Taking a step back, he waited for the Chief of the KunLun sect to respond. The Chief sat quietly for a few moments before he gave his reply to Chen.

“Your proposal is interesting, Marshal and you give a strong argument but I fear I have to decline. The KunLun Sect will not pit itself against the Imperial Court.”

Chen was dismayed but he quickly recovered and said,” But chief, TianQi seized the Dragon Throne by force. What you know as the Imperial Court no longer exists. Many of the officials have been replaced by his lackeys. He is not the rightful ruler of the Empire and you know it too. The Sects speaks of honour and justice and now a great dishonour of the greatest magnitude has been committed within the Empire, killing one’s own kin and seizing of the Dragon Throne. And the Sects, the last remaining force in the Empire that can stop him is refusing to move a finger!”

The chief got up from his seat and slowly walked to Chen,” Marshal, for centuries since the inception of the current dynasty, there has been an informal compact between the Sects and the Imperial Court. As long as we don’t interfere with the Imperial Court, the Imperial Court will not interfere in our affairs. And the KunLun Sect will not be the first to break the compact. Also even if we choose to rise against the Court, what guarantee is there that one of our rival sects will not use the opportunity to strike against us while we fight against the Court.”

Chen prepared to speak again but a hand from the Chief silenced him,” No Marshal, you have spoken enough. KunLun will not interfere in the Court’s affairs and that is my final decision.”

A few weeks later, Chen returned the headquarters of the White Lotus Sect where the 3 Marshals have take refuge and the results were disappointing. Most of the Sects, including 4 of the Big 5 Sects have refused to rise against the Court. Only the White Lotus and their traditional allies have agreed to revolt and Chen knew their combined strength will not be a match for the military might of the Imperial Army.

whitelotusHQ.jpg

White Lotus Sect Headquarters

Still Chen was undaunted. Even if he was only one person, he will still rise against the TianQi. That man was a pretender to the Throne and Chen will fight to his last breath to restore the Throne to a rightful heir.

Thus in Feb 1622, the White Lotus Sect with their allies rose in revolt in several provinces in the South of China.

lotus_cult_rebels.jpg

White Lotus Sect rises in revolt

The news of the uprising did not take long to reach the Capital. Emperor TianQi was furious when he heard the news,” How dare they! How dare the White Lotus rise against me, the Emperor of China?”

“Your Majesty, they also issued a proclamation.”

“What proclamation?”

“They say that you have seized the Throne by force and calls upon you to abdicate. They also call for the reinstatement of the Military Council failing that, the people of China will rise against you.”

“What?! They dare to have the audacity to dictate terms to me? I am the Emperor! No one tells me what to do! Issue an edict to the people of the Empire. The White Lotus is henceforth declared traitors and anyone found to have any dealings with them will be traitors as well! Convey my orders to the Armies. They are to crush this White Lotus Sect. Let’s see if anyone else will dare revolt.”

crushrebels.jpg

Crush the White Lotus Rebels with the Might of the Empire!!

As aides rushed off to convey the Emperor’s orders, TianQi turned to General Meng, one of the few military officials who have sworn their loyalty to the Emperor. “General, other then the White Lotus, are the other Sects planning anything?”
“Not that we know of. As far as we know, most of the other Sects continue to keep a low profile.”

TianQi considered the situation. He wasn’t sure if the rest of the Sects will unite and rise later but he know one thing, he cannot allow the Sects to unite. A united Sects will mean a force strong enough to match the Imperial Armies. No he cannot take the risk that the Sects will continue to keep a low profile. TianQi issued his orders to General Meng to crush the other Sects as well before they present a united front against the Imperial Court.

Over the next few months, the Imperial Armies engaged the White Lotus Sect in fierce battles across Southern China while General Meng led Imperial Guards against the individual Sects. But there were too many Sects in China. Once the first few Sects have been destroyed, the rest of the Sects did not wait to be crushed. All over China, Sects went into hiding to avoid the Imperial Guards.

clanwipeout.jpg

A Sect is crushed by Imperial Guards

Chen could not hide his disbelief when he heard of the Emperor’s crackdown on the Sects. By doing what he has done, he has just succeeded where Chen has failed, to unite the Sects.

By word of mouth, using secret codes developed centuries ago for just such a contingency, the White Lotus sent word to the various hidden Sects, calling for a Grand Meeting to discuss a united front against the Imperial Court and to Chen’s delight, the Sects agreed and the Grand Meeting would be held in Wenshan in a months time, where the White Lotus Sect has a secret base there.

Not wasting any time, Chen and his 2 brothers took to horse and made their way down to Wenshan for the Grand Meeting. Soon, they would have their army….

You have written a great introduction to the White Lotus revolts. I am a bit puzzled, though, over the clash between the story and the gameplay. What I mean is that in the story your characters are the three families -- they are the heroes, after all. But they are leading the rebellion, while in the game I presume you play the Emperor's side and crush the rebels (or are you deliberately letting them succeed in collapsing your government?) It's a great story in any case. :)

Well, first of all, I have already played out the story to about 1660. And I've played the game as I normally do. I did not do anything to make the game suit my story. In fact it is the other way round. What you are seeing is what happened in my game but of course in fiction form.

As for how the story of the 3 families progress, well guess you just got to keep reading :D
